5:31 am
wanted to be a balloon handler in the parade, i said yes. >> this storm is beginning to lose its steam as it starts to cross our area. we will end up with a couple of showers. >> for tam in south -- for famis in south philadelphia eighties a tradition to have your turkies cooked at cacia. >> thanksgiving is within day a year where you gather with old friend and tamly you have not seen forever and try your hardest not to talk about donald trump. >> president-elect donald trump is delivering a thanksgiving message to the nation. >> it is my rayer, that on this thanksgiving, we will begin to heel our divisions and move forward as one country. >> so this year you have a family duty to treat your political opinion just like grand mom's jello mold, choke it down, and keep it down until the guests leave. >> keep it down. >> i'm very concerned about my table this year, very concerned. well, late night,
5:32 am
community is having some laughs about awkward conversations that could happen, as all of our thanksgiving dinners tables today. >> katie joins us live. will the weather give us something to be thankful for. >> yes, it is a gray area much like a lot of our politics. >> especially today. >> yeah, this is one of those daisy wouldn't call it exceptional, either way, we do have a disturbance that is moving through, and yes, it could bring south showers but they are very scattered, they are very whimpy, and i would say that if you are traveling far north, say through the poconos at least right the now, it is still cold enough that it is still freezing on contact. you can see that in the form of the purple that is rolling in the last few hours near carbon, monroe county. the it is really scattered, again but we want you to be safe. it is worth a mention that this is not a major issue. with that said as well you can see green off in the distance too. that is moving through with time. so, in your traffic here, if you are like me and will be
5:33 am
doing traveling to visit your family and friend there will be a couple of showers around. it is not enough to slow you down in a major way but enough we will give you a caution light. they have got the green light for friday and saturday. where we will see the skies clear out, perhaps a left over stray showers tomorrow but not enough to, take a way the green light when it comes to travel. here's where we stand. you can understand why we're worried about possibility of freezing rain, up near mount pocono. we are under freezing mark at ground level. forty's here in philadelphia at the airport. there is a chill in the air. still warrants winter coat but this isn't terrible. we have absolutely seen colder, if not windier thanksgiving mornings. parade looks goody would say. expect to see the spotty showers, long the way, and nothing major, though. i feel like a lot of times icons make it look worse then it will be but again scattered showers throughout the rest of the day and looking forward we are expecting some pretty tame weather as well. we will walk through that rest of the forecast later on in the show. >> we will see you soon, thank you. last minute preparations
5:34 am

5:35 am
these balloons were inflated this morning. the it is a choreographed dance, balloon handlers have to pull in different directions just so the balloons can get filled just right. really intricate, interesting process. some of those balloon hand letters we spoke to arrived as early as 3:30 in the morning in order to get this job done. we spoke to a crew that is handling the tweetie bird, balloon, and many of them are first time balloon handlers, and kathy there she lives in south jersey now but she grew up in philadelphia and she remembers coming to this parade her entire life and decided to volunteer to be a balloon handler this year for this reason, lets take a listen. >> how many think anymore we get to do in life is just fun, and silly, and we can just be goofy, and have a good time and dance, sing, or whatever. >> reporter: a great attitude there. she hade so many memories growing up, and that will be the memory of walking down jfk
5:36 am
boulevard, with the tweetie bird balloon with her daughter. that is great. we are taking a look at the map of the parade route. it starts at 20th inn jfk boulevard and travels east to 16th street, turns north on the ben franklin parkway and end up by art museum steps and eakins oval. it is a great route, 1.4 whiles, this is 97th year for this fantastic parade, and it is oldest in the nation back out here live you can see crew is still hard at work inflating these balloons but not just balloons, it is floats, all kind of performers both locally known, celebrities too from across the country. we have great performances on tap to take and biggest celebrity of them all, wraps up the parade, that is santa claus, starts at 8:30 and runs until noon when you can see him. reporting live this morning, jan carabao cbs-3 "eyewitness news". joe, back to you. >> thanks for that live report. north another big parade is taking place in new york city, macy's thanksgiving day
