as we head into tomorrow your black friday whether your plans are outdoors or at the mall temperatures are going to be in the 50's. pretty seasonal for us. as we head in the next several days we will see gradual cool down, it will culminate on sunday. we will talk about the brisk end to the weekend and good chance for rain next week even. we will have details in the full forecast in just a few minutes. >> lauren, thanks. folks are outside, rush is on as we mentioned holiday shopping is underway in our area and it is right in the middle of it all alex hoff in cherry hill. alex, happy thanksgiving. >> reporter: happy thanksgiving, ukee. cherry hill mall officially opens up at 6:00 p.m. but some retailers did open up earlier, jc penny opened up at 3:00, and let me tell before you that happened there was a line of customers waiting to get in that wrapped, nearly halfway around this enormous complex. now, just two hours, into this black friday, turned black thursday shopping screens, and arms were full with bags, according to the national retail association, over

137 million americans, planned to shop this holiday weekend and we will expect an average of $300, of those people surveyed last year, they said all of the items they bought 100 percent were at a discount. that leads me to a nice vice, some customers say they had them going in to the stores today, they say not only did they experience, the holiday discounts, they already knew about but they are also met with unexpected, coupons at the door to give them a little extra off. in terms of the unexpect some say they did not expect the hadness they found inside. >> you know, like the whole place was saying she was behind but things fell all over the lays behind me. the it got so out of control what did you do. >> i just put my stuff down. >> reporter: are you coming back for anything. >> no, i'm done. >> reporter: that is how i get stressed out and i get out but i typically come back in.

half of the people we spoke with said shopping on thanksgiving has become part of their holiday tradition but the other half of the people we spoke with said this is something they do when they sneak away for a while get it done early and come back and have dinner with their families. if you are looking to come out and shop most stores here at cherry hill mall are opened until hid night, and many of them opening backup at 6:00 a.m. reporting live,al sand that hoff for cbs-3 "eyewitness news". >> how the times have changed, thank you. as lauren mentioned morning skies were gray but philadelphia's 97th thanksgiving day parade brought a spark over center city. this is the longest running thanksgiving day parade, in the entire country. hundreds of performers from around the region gathered to entertain the crowds over ben franklin parkway. we talked to parade watchers about what they remember about the par raid. >> one day they do some

marching. >> i like seeing the floats go past. >> that put me on my shoulders, what was i about three and i only missed one year when i lived in california and that is it. >> reporter: you are 80 years young now. >> eighty-one next week. >> that is beautiful. parade route was almost a mile and a half long stretching all the way, to the art museum steps. not to be out done manhattan was packed with an estimated 2.5 million spectators for iconic macy's thanksgiving day parade. tv correspondent roxanne was there for the celebration. >> reporter: members of the u.s. military academy marched along the round of the new york thanksgiving day parade. to the delight have the of the crowds. >> it is amazing. the it is freezing. we are having so much fun. what do you think of the parade so far. >> i think it is awesome. >> william came from near and far, to see new balloons of classic characters. >> i think it is nostalgic,

cbs-3 "eyewitness news". giving thanks with family and friend, not everyone was fortunate enough to be able to prepare a thanksgiving meal for their family. our joe holden shows us how salvation army is making it a little easier for family in need for the holidays. >> reporter: first thing we heard salvation army in west philadelphia. >> best turkey in,. >> reporter: vivian simms was at head of the food table, dishing out the turkey and then sprinkling in some words of wisdom. >> people want to sit back, watch football, or whatever, and we just make it a little bit more easier, that is all. >> reporter: 1,000 family registered with the salvation army, and, thanksgiving, representing about 5,000 individuals, who were giving thanksgiving dinner. >> reporter: volunteers who make this operation, work. >> i'm kind of overwhelmed because my gratitude is just helping out. >> it is just a blessing to be able to give, and not receive all the time and so just to be a smile that you can bring

upon somebody. >> reporter: all of these folks are volunteers that say they want to give back. this is vivian simms from say south philadelphia. how long have but doing this. >> i have been doing this for maybe seven years now. >> reporter: they call it thanksgiving to go. >> what did they set you up with. >> yes, everything is in there, i'm cooking all this food. >> reporter: few slices of turkey. >> turkey, and bread. >> reporter: served with a smile. >> we are serving this here. need a little push. we are out here to make sure that happens. >> reporter: in west philadelphia i'm joe holden for cbs-3 "eyewitness news". now to north philadelphia, where a fraternity feeds hundreds of the cities homeless community. alpha pi alpha served warmed meal, at columbia ymca at north broad. it is part of the tenth annual arms initiative which included a clothing drive. for the leadership of the philadelphia chapter, known as

the delta lambda it is all about giving back. >> it is all about being thankful for the blessings we have received throughout the year through our life and it is good to be thankful as we receive, sharing that blessing, you know, and those capabilities to do so. because, it is only one pay a check or one bad situation and we might need someone to look out for us. >> alpha pi alumni include reverend doctor martin luther king junior, thoroughgood marshall and ukee washington junior my dad. in his own word we are learning more information about the investigation in the package bomb that blew up and injured a center city resident on tuesday. rick tim talked to "eyewitness news" reporter greg argos about his frightening ordeal and why he thought he have been targeted. >> reporter: two days after opening up a package which could have killed him, 60 year-old jim alden says he is just glad to be alive. speaking on the phone from an

undisclosed location thanksgiving morning alden told me he lost half of his left middle finger and bruces and cuts from the shrapnel placed inside a package addressed to him. >> it is a envelope, padded envelope, and upon it being opened by the victim it detonated and exploded. >> reporter: that is special agent in charge sam rapadi tuesday described the bomb that detonated tuesday morning inside alden's apartment near 18th and pine. he just returned home and opened package in his kitchen, when it exploded in his hand. agents with the atf, fbi and philadelphia police are investigating but right now no arrests. >> there has been no connection to suggest it is related to any group, idealology, right now that is what we're talking about. right now we're target specific in that it is sent to this individual. >> reporter: he tells me package was designed to look exactly like the envelope, and regular prescription and he has no clue you why he was targeted or who may have wanted to hurt him. although these are just

theories, aldennis not sure if this was a target or recent post on facebook, and reporting here from center city, i'm greg argos for cbs-3 "eyewitness news". police are looking for whoever opened fire on three men putting up christmas lights in juniata park. the it happened in the 4,000 block of howland street around 10:45 last night. victim says that a dark gray chef i impala with tinted windows stopped some one inside asked if the man put up a light and if their cars. they changed word, passenger opened fire. car then drove off. and three men, were taken to temple university hospital with gunshot wounds and they are in stable condition. police are investigating shooting of the 21 year-old man in west philadelphia four shots were fired in the 1500 block of west diamond street, just before 11:00 o'clock last night. three of the four shots hit the victim, victim is listed in stable condition, and there have been no arrests. coming up, on "eyewitness news" tonight, frantic search for survivors after a tragic

there is, tension among loyallist of president-elect donald trum been who should be appointed secretary of state. mr. trump is spending this thanksgiving holiday at his home in florida as a recount effort picks up steam. cbs correspondent kenneth craig has the latest now from new york. >> reporter: president-elect donald trump took to twitter this thanksgiving to say he is working hard to keep ministering, in america. mr. trump also released a prethanksgiving video asking americans to set aside their differences. >> we have just finished a long, bruising political campaign, emotions are raw, tensions just don't heel

overnight. >> reporter: mr. trump advisor kelly ann conway is weighing in on 012 g.o.p. nominee mitt romney on the short list to be secretary of state despite a fierce criticism of trump during the campaign. >> donald trump is a phony, fraud. >> reporter: conway tweeted thursday that the potential pick hazlet to messages warning against romney. she then posted a checklist of attributes that she believes makes a good secretary of state, being loyal, as one of them. >> the president-elect is also expected to tap billion air investor wilbur ross for commerce secretary, who splits his time between here in new york and his home in florida, just down the street are from mr. trump. meantime a lawyer for green party candidate doctor jill stein says that she will formally request a statewide recount in wisconsin by friday's deadline after raising more than three million-dollar for the recount costs. stein is also looking into requesting recountness michigan, and pennsylvania.

kenneth craig, cbs news, new york. now, eastern china, at least 67 people are dead after scaffolding in a construction site collapsed. about 500 rescue workers were digging through, the debris with their hand trying to reach any survivors. close to 70 construction workers were at work building a power plant cooling tower when the scaffolding gave way. this is china's worst work safety accident in more than two years. israel's wild fire forced over 60,000 people to evacuate their homes. it has been burning since monday in hifa israel's third largest city. 500 including russia and turkey have sent fire fighting planes to extinguish blaze. the israeli chief of police said that politically motivated arsonist are suspected of starting the fire. well, a man is recovering in a hospital, burned in a hospital burn unit after an e cigarette he was car anything his pant pocket exploded and it was all captured on camera. scene played out in a wine store in new york's grand central station terminal.

567894 degrees right around average for us, wind of the northwest, strong 6 miles an hour, light breeze, we have had some sprinkles and very light showers passing the delaware valley today but the intensity, very light, so much so, that our accumulations are on the lower side, only .3 of an inch in nazareth, oxford picking up .01 of an inch. we will head in the next couple of hours storm scan three looks ominous as far as reflectivity is concerned but this is very light in intensity. seeing showers and syringe also working their way towards the shore. i mentioned some concerns, possibly period of freezing rain, in and around carbon, monroe counties, you will see in the last couple frames here starting to see a little bit more east of the mount pocono, i don't think we will see accumulation of ice, but if you are heading to the roadways over next couple of hours do take it slow because you could encounter brief slick spots. we will see pink encompassing mount pocono, pocono pines and places westbound as well. do watch out for possibility

by his transition team. vice-president elect pence tweeted out his thanksgiving message saying today we give thanks for many blessings in our lives, family friend, freedom, faith from our family to yours, #happy thanksgiving. a local organization has been using thanksgiving as a way to give back for years but as "eyewitness news" reporter rahel solomon reports, this years manna operation is a very special one. >> reporter: on thanksgiving day every year in the manna kitchen your family isn't necessarily who you are related to but who you are connected to, by call. >> it is a big system. we have over 3500 volunteers that really make it possible and today will be a day that they are out there working. >> reporter: manna prepares and delivers nutritious meals to people in and around philadelphia living with life threatening illnesses. thanksgiving is one of their biggest days. but they deliver not just a complete thanksgiving dinner for one but for an entire family of four, to to it, they

depend on volunteers like these, philadelphia district attorney seth williams helped out and michelle is with peco who sponsored the meal. >> we're only here for a couple hours, it is least we can do and it is thanksgiving and you have to be thankful for what you have. >> reporter: manna officials tell thaws this years thanksgiving operation is their largest ever and for that reason it is special. they also say it is sentimental for another reason. >> we have been in this facility for 19 years and this is our last year. we're moving. we're moving in a brand new space where we will more than double our capacity, however, it seems fitting that our last year celebrating here that we are able to help more households then we have ever been able to help before. over 750 household. >> reporter: compare that to 550 last year, according to doubtry and you can understand why they are moving to a bigger space next year. no doubt, the volunteers and family members will follow them there. in philadelphia, rahel solomon for cbs-3 "eyewitness news". well, not a perfect thanksgiving day outside,

overall, it wasn't too bad, weather-wise, meteorologist lauren casey joins us now. >> reporter: thanks very much. >> it is something you can imagine this time of the season gets dicey weather-wise. we will see cloud, sprinkles, a lot of us, enjoying thanksgiving day parade and temperatures right now, not too chilly 54 degrees is our current in philadelphia, 54 down the shore. chillier in the poconos. 35 degrees right the now. the wind are calm, to generally light, not too much wind chill impact across the area. we have a slow moving cold front, traversing the delaware valley. we have colder numbers on the back side of the cold front, plus boundary located around north wind on the back side of the southern flow the height of the frontal boundary and that cold front is trending to generate a few you syringe also, showers across the area we are seeing much activity start to now exit, mainly well east of the i-95 corridor, we have shower activity up toward the poconos and brief period of, freezing rain or sleet mixed in there as well but that is starting to move out of monroe county and we will clear the county within the

says that the extra cost of the thanksgiving meal for ten is $46.69. in the city this year. that is 16-pound turning friday $21.84. at average of zero cents more than last year but philadelphians are paying $3.18 less than the national average, for a meal, for ten. and, how about the calorie cost for this thanksgiving. it is a diet buster according to the calorie control council. many will consume 4500 calories and 229 grams of fat, while enjoying their holiday meal. that number does not include appetizers and drinks. now to avoid heavy calorize binge, researchers suggest cooks use lower calorie ingredients when preparing their dinner and limit appetizers to fresh food, and veggies. well, if you are planning on serving heinz grave think thanksgiving, this is for you, heinz is recalling 5,000-pound of gravy because of possible, allergy risk, the usda says that jars of bistro a jj us

on thanksgiving organizations aren't the country, provide meals for those who cannot afford them. but there are also groups who give thanksgiving dinner for those with serious illness. weijia jiang has that story. >> reporter: for eight years and counting, this is how brenda hamlen has spent thanksgiving. the 69 year-old is one of nearly a thousand volunteers, who prepared, packed, and delivered holiday meals to people who have a serious illness, like aids or cancer. >> we have put a lot of care, love into our meals that we prepare. >> reporter: the non-profit group called food and friend provided nutritious meals to
