castro's death triggered celebrations in miami's large cuban american community. cuba has declared nine days of national mourning. good evening, i'm natasha brown. thanks so much for joining us. castro's body has been cremated his funeral will be next sunday after a four day procession throughout cuba. cbs correspondent don champion is in miami's little havana where thousands honked horns and danced in the streets. >> reporter: people celebrating filled the streets in miami's little havana saturday as word of fidel castro's death spread. the neighborhood is a cultural epicenter for cuban americans. >> this is a very meaningful day that the dick date is dead. >> reporter: her father was a political prisoner in cuba for years. her family fled to america when she was 11. >> and i was a small child and i'm here, very thankful to be here. this is my country and i'm hopeful for cube basement throughout the day the crowd

lined me as grown, many here shared similar stories of castro's decades of oppression and hope for the future. >> he's going with the devil because he is the devil. >> reporter:. >> castro ruled cuba for nearly 50 years. failing health forced him to step down in 2006 known as a tyrant. others looked at him as a revolutionary a fact josé recognizes. >> he's loved around the world because he's standing up to the american power but the people that are living there they know the true story. >> reporter: president raúl castro broke the news of his brother's death to the cuban people on state run television friday night. flags are flying at half-staff as the communist nation observes nine days of mourning. don champion for cbs3 "eyewitness news." >> well, for some cuban americans castro cast a dark shadow over their entire lives

including a former ranking philadelphia official. cleve bryan joins us now live from the cbs3 stat center with more on castro's local impact. >> reporter: natasha for five decades castro tried to squash anyone who tried to oppose his rule over cuban as philadelphia former deputy mayor and managing director when he was a boy he was caught in the crossfire. former philadelphia deputy mayor rich negron is cuban american and says to many people on and off the island nation the death of fidel castro is a day of celebration. >> for much of the folks in the cuban communities it's like a lot like the death of osama bin laden. >> reporter: his parents fled cuba in 1961 because of the communist revolution. he grew up hearing stories of the atrocities. >> of people being imprisoned people being murdered and killed and having really kangaroo court and bad trials. >> reporter: negron's father was a leading advocate for normalizing relationships between the u.s. and cuba.

>> he helped negotiate the release of 3,000 political prisoners and because of in he was targeted by a radical cuban terrorist group wasn't killed. >> reporter: at the age of 13 negron witnessed his father's assassination by the anti-castro extremists. the anniversary is sunday. >> so, it's an interesting weekend for me every year thanksgiving weekend to have castro die on this weekend is pretty interesting. >> reporter: he says much of his father's family never left cuba. he hopes his family in cuba will soon experience the freedoms he's enjoyed here in the u.s. >> we hope to see reforms around civil rights. we hope to see free and fair elections, a real freedom of the press, free speech, people who get due process of law. >> reporter: negron says he's never been to cuba to visit the family members and it's something he would like to do. i'm cleve bryan cbs3 "eyewitness news." >> all right, cleaver, thank you so much. new jersey senator bob menendez says the death of fidel castro should bring cubans one step closer to

freedom. >> the passing of fidel castro is a historic time for the united states to recalibrate its policy towards the castro regime. instead of condoning the continuation of a repress sieve regime simply because it's been around long enough, the united states and the international community must stand up and support the cuban people. >> menendez had strongly opposed president obama's decision to reverse 50 years of american policy and restore diplomatic relations with cuba. and now in recognition of fidel castro's death an olde city bar is stepping up offering a complimentary cocktail. cuba libre restaurant and rum bar near second and market street is giving away a free drink. guests can get a free rum and coke during happy hour starting today. all you have to do is mention viva cuba to the bartender 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.

shop here's had money left over for black friday hit up mom and pop shops today for small business saturday. hundreds of folks in haddonfield new jersey flocking that area to shop locally. more than 30 shops and restaurants participating in small business saturday. american express created the promotion in 2010 as an answer to black friday. many small business owners say seeing a bevy and shoppers today is a good gauge for the rest of the holiday shopping season. >> if people are making a point to come and support your business that means you're doing something right. so, it's kind of a sign that things are going well and it kind of boosts your energy for the rest of the season. >> well, all business owners here say small business saturday is not only profitable but it also introduces new visitors to their town as well. mayor jim kenney supported local businesses today by shopping in manayunk. the mayor picked up some new music at main street music. the mayor says shopping

locally helps to build the economy. >> jobs are created by small business and that's why we love districts like this and improving the ones that need to be improved and supporting our immigrant communities because they tend to start businesses. the myth that immigrants are somehow taking resources out of the system is wrong. they're putting resources in the system starting businesses and employing people. >> the mayor went on to buy some lucky boy or girl a gift from spectrum scientific. a saint season at city hall -- a sign of the season at city hall today. >> one, two, three. "eyewitness news" there was it's a flip was switched on philadelphia's 40-foot tall colorado fir. it lit up the tree for the holiday season this year. the tree sits on a new base showcasing iconic philadelphia landmarks. beautiful. now this may be a great weekend actual to put up those holiday decorations. we'll be enjoying some sunday

sunshine. let's check in with meteorologist lauren casey in the cbs3 weather center with her sunny sunday forecast. may need the jacket though, lauren? what do you think? >> yeah, i think we'll need the jacket, a little bit of a breeze cooler temperatures but we'll have some sunshine. we saw is some breaks of sunshine across parts of the area throughout the day today so some improvement but full sunshine returns as we head into the day tomorrow. it was a slightly cooler day. we topped at 53 degrees. yesterday in philadelphia, today 50 but that's right around average for us. a cool day in the lehigh valley topping in the upper 40's. same case in berks county with a high today of 47 in reading and we have a chillier evening in progress. 24 hour temperature change on the order of about five to 10 degrees cooler, temperatures right now across much of the delaware valley down into the 40's. cape may 46 degrees, philadelphia 46, dover 46 degrees and we also have a little bit of a breeze to contend with out of the northwest up around 10 to 15 miles per hour adding to that wind chill element. storm scan3 showing us a little bit of activity right now up towards the poconos, maybe a drip or a flake passing on by poconos down into the lehigh valley.

otherwise, quiet conditions and the cloud deck is starting to decrease right now. and that's what we'll expect in the city as we head into the next several hours. overnight tonight quiet but feeling pretty chilly especially with there northwest breeze keeping up. feeling more like 29 to 33 degrees so definitely need the winter coat if you're heading out and about tonight. as we wake up on a sunday morning sunny and chilly. we will have that sunshine. we'll talk about where temperatures will top as we head into tomorrow afternoon. your all important eagles forecast for monday evening and then some much needed rainfall with a midweek soaker in store. i'll have all the details in your full forecast in a few natasha. >> lauren thanks so much. see you soon. police say a man who barricaded himself inside a home in roxborough died from a self inflicted gunshot wound. the intense moments unfolded about 5 o'clock this morning along river road. officers responded to the scene for shots fired. police and s.w.a.t. then surrounded his home as the man barricaded himself inside. firing off several shots. neighbors say living next door

to the man has been a nightmare. >> periods of yelling and screaming and obscenities. it never went this far to where he was shooting his gun. we knew he had them. we were all very nervous about someone that unstable having them. >> well, there were no other injuries reported during that standoff. meantime cherry hill police say a driver going the wrong way hit a police cruiser head on early this morning. police say it happened just before 2 o'clock on route 70 near kingston drive. investigators tell us the woman was traveling eastbound in the westbound lanes. both the officer and the driver were treated at the hospital for their injuries. the woman was charged with driving while intoxicated and she also faces additional charges as well. president-elect donald trump and hillary clinton are at it again apparently. still ahead clinton joins the growing push now to force election recounts in three states including pennsylvania. how trump is reacting.
