inauguration day a roaches next month, the senate is honoring outing vice-president, joe biden. mr. biden presided over the senate floor during a bipartisan trip boot to him on capitol hill. he represented delaware for 36 years in the the senate, and as vice-president, he is present of the senate. on monday mr. biden stoked speculation that he may run for president in 2020. he clarified his remarks on the the late show with stephen colbert on cbs-3 last night. >> i'm a great respecter of fate. i don't plan on running again but to say you know what will happen in four careers, i just think it is, it is not rational. i -- >> that is the sound of the door creaking open is what that is. >> well look, i cannot see the circumstance in which i would run but what i've learn a long, long time ago, steven, it is to never say never. you just don't know what will happen. >> the vice-president also says in four years he will be 77, and in better shan than

president-elect trump. we're learning more about the other driver who died in the head on crash, that killed a new jersey state trooper. sixty-one year-old doctor lloyd rutly of elmer was pronounced dead at the scene of monday night's crash on route 55 in millville. police say his car crossed a grassy median and then crashed into trooper frank i williams as he responded to a eradic driver complaint. today our cleve bryan learned exclusive new details about doctor rudly a practicing psychiatrist. >> he has no living relatives at all. so every holiday we'd have him here. he was like a family member, without being blood family. he never touched liquor in his life or any kind of drugs, except his insulin. >> reporter: our cleve bryan will have more of that exclusive interview and the latest on the crash investigation that is coming up in a live report on "eyewitness news" at 6:00. traffic is back to normal now after a new jersey transit train hit a koran camden's river line, that accident took

place this morning near federal street and river avenue, causing delays, causing the morning rush hour. the train hit the driver's side door and it caused extensive damage to the car, and a toast truck was able to remove car from the track, in one was injured. camden county officials have have launched a new program designed to save critical time in emergency situations, residents can now sign up for the smart 911 system. it is a free service that allows users to create a profile that provides vital information to dispatchers, and first responders, during an emergency. users can link their cell phones to the the profile, which can include addresses and photos, to let's mergecy crews know where to go and who they are looking for. well, yesterday's rain has moved on but now get ready for temperatures, to tumble. meteorologist kate bilo joins us on the skies deck with the closer look at what is ahead, kate. >> reporter: definitely feeling chilly out here this evening, it is not too bad, pretty seasonal but we have got cold air waiting in the wings, coldest air of the

season so far, and it is heading our way by the weekend. here is a look outside taking a look at storm scan three showing a few clouds. we have breaks in the cloud cover this afternoon, system from last night has moved out to sea but you can just see a few snow showers moving through the midwest and that is our next cold front it doesn't have moisture with it, not going to see anything in the way of precipitation but what we will feel is drop in temperature, behind this front. the lets start off with local temperatures right now at 46 in philadelphia. forty-four in trenton. 43 degrees in reading. these numbers are seasonal for this time of the year, early december right where we should be. look at is what not too seasonal, head back to the midwest, it is 24 in chicago right now, 25 degrees in des moines, 20 in minneapolis, and all that cold, it is progressing eastward. may not get quite as cold as in the midwest but we will tap, into some of that arctic air that will start moving in tomorrow and definitely will be felt friday into the weekend. coming up i'll tell you when those cold temperatures

advance closer to us and talk about the chance for rain and snow showers in the forecast and when temperatures head back to normal all coming up when i join you inside. for now back to you. >> a lot to talk about, thanks. today jurors began hearing evidence in the trial accused charleston church shooter dylann roof, the 22-year old white man is charged with killing nine black people at a historic church in charleston, south carolina. cbs news correspondent marlee hall was in the courtroom. >> reporter: family members of the victims of the charleston church shooting arrived at the courthouse wednesday morning where the murder trial of the alleged shooter, got underway. 22-year old dylann roofies accused of killing nine black parishioners during bible study at historic emmanuel ame church in 2015, authorities say that he told them he did it because he wanted to start a race war, during opening statements, a federal prosecutor, said that roof was a man with a cold, hate tool heart. felicia sanders was first to take the stand. she survived the shooting but

her 26 year-old son tykwanzaa did not. she cried as she cried watching taking him take his last breath as he tried to protect her and others. roof's lawyer told jury he is not disputing that his client committed the crimes. he said he might in the call any witnesses during this part of the trial. if convicted, roof faces the death penalty, and his attorney tried to hint at reasons why his client shouldn't be put to death buzz prosecutors objected saying he should save those comments for the penalty phase face of the trial. roof has said he wants to represent himself during that part of the proceedings. marlee hall for cbs-3 "eyewitness news". fire officials say that there are no more victims to be found in the burned out warehouse in oakland, california. authorities are now shifting their attention to what caused that massive fire. oakland mayor libby shay told the media that the building was being used illegally not intended for residential use

special agent with the bureau of alcohol, tobacco firearms and explosives said people on the second floor did not know about the fire on the first floor, until it was well developed, and flames were blocking the stairways. two juveniles have have been charged with aggravated arson for starting the wild fires that killed 14 people. it began in the chimney top area of the great smokey mountains national park november 23rd. it quickly spread to the gatlinburg area causing damage to more than 1700 buildings and, and injuring many others. and a plane goes down near the capitol of pakistan, but officials say, none of the 48 passengers or crew survived the crash. photographs show a grim scene in the mountains of the a bad bad. pakistani authorities say twin propeller aircraft crashed moment after the pilot reported engine failure. planes's black box recordes was found in the wreckage and investigators will see if it

will shed exactly on what happened. thousands of residents in indonesia are left homeless following a deadly earthquake that struck just before dawn. 6.5 quake killed nearly 100 people and, killed 600 more. search teams are looking for survivors trap in the ruble. at least four people have been pulled out alive thus far. downpours and blackouts have hampered the search efforts. well, students at the friends school in haverford are learning a important lesson on global citizenship. >> they collected school supplies for children in europe which has now led to a blossoming friendship across the atlantic ocean. cherri gregg from our sister station kyw news radio has this story. >> reporter: they are third and fourth graders at friends school in haverford. the eight, nine, ten years olds love reading, art and are filled with curiosity. >> these are kids, ages five to 15. they are some of the 11 million refugees, forced from their home, in syria.

>> they are really establishing a level of connection, and compassion that is frankly quite pretty emotional, to see that. >> reporter: amanda leave on son runs needs list a web site that links american donors to european refugee camps based on need. she put a call out and her son leo's class helped raise hundred pound of school supplies to send overseas. then they established his connection with the kid that they helped in the refugee camp, based in greece. students asked about their skype pals dreams. >> my dream is to go to america. >> reporter: their favorite things to do. >> we like bicycles and they like sports like we do. >> reporter: they looked at their art. >> they were really good at it. >> reporter: to show their syrian friend that someone cares. >> they are human, we're human and every human should have equal rights to go to different countries. >> reporter: transforming an internet connection, into a life long lesson.

well, it the might be a little chilly here but some parts of the country are dealing with a major arctic blast, and it the is very cold there, winter isn't arrived yet ape this is what people are dealing with in north dakota. the snow fell hard and fast, created white out conditions as you can see there but weather clearly caught drivers off guard, not every day you see a tow truck, towing another tow truck that one got stuck in the snow. >> that hurts. >> yes. >> dazzling display is on the way next weekend and we are not talking about christmas lights. to see this display you have to look up, way up. meteorologist justin drabick has that story, from the einstein health care science center. >> reporter: double dose for stargazers is coming not one but two stellar events, get to see super moon and shooting stars at the same time. gift from outer space this

holiday season, next week the meteor shower will arrive along with the december super moon, two bright objects that can be seen with the naked eye. >> the geminid meteors are intensely colored. if you are lucky and see bright streak across the keith that is a meteor. >> reporter: here's how, geminid meteor shower begins sunday night but will be far more active early wednesday morning. same time we will see super moon. meteors will be in all parts of the skies but for the best view trying looking away from the moon, also, find a dark location, and this is an active meteor shower with up to 120 meteors per hour. you may think meteors are the size of the large rock, but, in fact, they are tiny. >> they are only about the size of sand grains like what we see here. just about the size of sand grains. but because the entering of the earth's atmosphere so fast, they create a very, very bright streak, as they heat the air around them as they plunge in the earth's atmosphere.

>> reporter: if you are really lucky you can get a peak at jupiter that will rise in the east around the same time the geminid's peak wednesday morning and visible until dawn. from the einstein health care science center i'm meteorologist justin drabick. >> how about that. >> new pictures of saturn have been captured by nasa's spacecraft, pictures seen here are of saturn's rings through four different lens filters. each filter is sensitive to different wave lengths of light showing clouds, hazees from varying altitudes. spacecraft is on a mission to study saturn's system and will continue to transmit atmospheric dad the a through september. >> that is amazing but i'm still amazed by sand grains. >> wow. >> fascinating stuff. >> wow, wow. kate joins us now with the forecast this winter blast is coming our way. >> yes, talking about blasting in the atmosphere but we will have a blast of arctic air invading midwest and on its way towards us. it is not coldest air we have ever felt but coldest air we have felt this season. >> it is all relative. >> yes.lt this season. >> it will be the first time where you walk outside and

think i might need to put another layer on, maybe another pair of gloves or scarves, just as warm as you think you are dressed maybe add one more component this weekend because again this is coldest air we have felt since last winter and it is on its way here. lets look outside right now, we will start off with a look in bethlehem where christmas city is decked out a little bit there you can see northampton county we have christmas lights on the trees, lots of traffic, up and down main street, this is looking live from the hotel bethlehem, and we had a little bit of frozen precipitation in the portions of the least high valley last night. nothing tonight. everything is quiet around there whiz is good news and it should stay dry and quiet for next several days as well. good news there. look at the time lapse. we will start off in broadheadsville with snow on the ground they did get snow last night the buzz watch what happens during the day. temperatures rise far enough above freezing that once the sun tries to peak out in the afternoon, we will start to see this snow, very gradually, melt away, and then we're left with green grass by the end of the day a lot of that snow in the lower elevations,

broadheadsville got an inch or so and that already melted and we're back to a clean slate for another chance for snow showers in the poconos this weekend. storm scan three is clear for now, everything is looking okay, our next front doesn't have much moisture at all with it, kind of draped right here back through midwest, producing light snow in southern illinois, and into missouri. that will come through tomorrow morning for us, and like we said, it will come through generally dry. only indication that it is here for most of us will be cloud cover in the morning. so temperatures right now pretty seasonal 46 in the city. forty in millville. 44 degrees in trenton. thirty-five in mount pocono. taking you through tomorrow, you can see we will start off the day with some clouds, and then we will start to clear it out but a big drop is coming, tomorrow, temperatures will go slightly below normal and then friday and saturday, that is when the real cold will be felt, and you'll start to feel that transition tomorrow. so clear skies for the first part of tonight, here's that front coming through, not much with it. just some cloud tomorrow morning. those clouds thin out quickly and then most of the daze will be sunny but wind will pick up

tomorrow afternoon, and wind about ten to 15 miles an hour for your thursday and then ten to 20 miles an hour on friday, friday wind could gust as high as 0 miles an hour and that will make it feel much, much colder then thermometer indicates, in fact, by friday morning, it will be feeling like the teens in many locations, at 7:00 a.m. and friday afternoon feeling sub freezing, all day lock, with the wind, temperatures around 40 degrees but not feeling much better then 30, all day. overnight partly cloudy, chilly, 34 degrees, for yourself thursday clouds giving way to sun, brisk, chilly at 45. friday very cold, 40 degrees, but even though saturday is colder then friday, friday will probably feel colder then saturday and that is because it is more windy and feel, sub freezing all day friday and then cold start to the weekend, i'll tell you when maybe we will head back to normal with the seven day next half an hour. >> that will wake you up. >> that would too. a story in texas has two new employees in lowes.

do you tend to look on the the bright side? do you see that glass half full, instead of empty? answers to those questions could determine just how long you'll live. the news continues now 59:30. good evening i'm jessica keen. i'm ukee washington. new research looked at people with a optimistic outlook on life. cbs-3 health reporter stephanie stahl is here with what that means for your health. >> you said it before, don't worry, be happy, new research says that kind of attitude can actually save your life. this is a large scale study that find having a positive outlook, really can help you, live longer. >> think i'm more of a glass half full person. i tried to look at the bright side of life. >> reporter: that optimistic outlook on life may help you live longer according to the new research. >> when compared most optimistic to least optimistic people reduced risk of dying from cancer, stroke, infection, stroke, heart disease and lung disease as well. >> reporter: derrick kim and researchers from harvard looked at data on 07,000 women

japanese attack pearl harbor. surprise attack killed 2400 americans, injured more than 1200 and forced the u.s. into world war two. nearly half were killed on the u.s.s. arizona. in less than two hours the japanese took majority of the u.s. pacific fleet, out of action. today, thousands came to pearl harbor to pays their respects during a special ceremony at pearl harbor memorial in hawaii. ninety-four year-old donald stratton was there to mark the anniversary. he is one of the five known remaining survivors of the u.s.s. arizona. japanese also attack the u.s.s. utah, were 400 survivors. nine three-year old gilbert myers is one of only six, still living today. >> did you make it off the ship. >> i swam, as you can see, i was sleeping down in the star burt and torpedo hit the port. >> you were asleep. >> yes, i had big watch, i stayed up all night. >> japan's prime minister will visit pearl harbor with president obama later this

month. it will be the first visit by a japanese leader. local veterans are gathering on the battleship new jersey, to mark pearl harbor's anniversary. the battleship's role in u.s. history. "eyewitness news" reporter anita oh is live in camden tonight and anita you talk to those who served on the u.s.s. new jersey. >> reporter: that is right, jessica, you are looking at 45,000 tons of metal and a big, beautiful as u.s.s. new jersey is, it is also most decorated battleship in the history of the you had navy. so pretty cool that it is right here on the camden waterfront. it was launched officially a year after that attack on pearl harbor and they say many who served on this ship and later gathered to remember that date 75 years ago that forever change our country. >> ♪ >> reporter: as american flag waves over the water, it reminds those who soluted their common cause, the pursuit of liberty, justice and of a nation inn divisive.

>> freedom is never free. somebody has to die to defend that freedom. that is the message hopefully america is learning and will never forget. >> reporter: seventy-five years after hundreds of japanese fighter planes attack the u.s. naval base at pearl harbor these men have not forgotten. >> those poor people out there the a pearl harbor, they didn't have a chance and i'm sorry. >> you think about the tragedy, and the fact that we were so unprepared, for war at the time, didn't see it coming. >> reporter: the attack led america in to world war two and tragedy became a lesson. >> pearl harbor united america like nothing has ever done before and for the first time ever we became one nation. >> reporter: but just like these soldiers devotion to their country another unwavering part of the later wars was u.s.s. new jersey. >> when i saw my name on the bulletin board for u.s.s. new jersey, i thought oh, boy, that is one of the biggest ships in the world. >> reporter: ninety-one

with the clear sky and just a few photos from our eyewitness weather watchers, peter sent this in beautiful sunset shot. you can see colors returning to the skies once the sun began to set after that sun finally emerged and lynn also sending the shot of this sun, setting, beautiful, she said sun appeared late today, but better late then never and great shot from lynn. thanks as always to our weather watchers. looking at storm scan three does show a few clouds, they are thin, which ispy not a big deal for now but clouds will move back in tomorrow morning as we await the arrival of the next cold front. now this front will come through generally dry, you can barely even see it here on storm scan three. it is draped back across the midwest and into portions of the northern plains and the cold air is lock up behind it for now. sochi, minneapolis, temperatures right now in those spots only in the 20's, and that cold air is heading our way. i don't think we will get quite that cold but we will sees overnight lows in the 20's this weekend but we will be tapping in this big arctic air, air mass that is centered over portions of central and

western canada but all starting to draw southward and progressively made inn roads through the next several days. so for tomorrow you can see we will start to see that cold air. this is freezing line, you can see it starts to invade by friday reaching portions of the carolinas, florida, georgia. saturday we will see that pink, very cold air move down in the philadelphia area and then sunday morning, looks like the coldest yet, temperatures only in the mid 20's and many spots in the teens, especially as you head up toward poconos. in the weekend we are talking about temperatures 10 degrees below average. that is significant because average highs in the mid to upper 40's this time of the year. we are talking about highs in the 30's in some spots. wind 15 to 20 miles an hour. morning wind chills in the teens. afternoon wind chills in the 20's. this will continue, your temperature outlook from the climate prediction center keeps the outlook below average, right through december 19th, and in the northeast and mid-atlantic region. overnight 34. partly cloudy and chilly. for your thursday cloud in the morning and then afternoon
