a suspect who killed a georgia police officer and wounded another is on the run this morning. law enforcement officials are looking for this man, lembrick. a 30,000 reward is being offered to lead to his arrest and shortly after the shooting a message on his facebook page read another life gone and not going to jail. >> reporter: gunfire broke out in the town of americaas 30 miles south of georgia. a police officer responded to a domestic dispute. >> gunshots were exchanged and the two officers were wound. >> reporter: police say 145-year-old nicholas smar was killed and jody smith was critical wounded. investigators identified 32-year-old lembrick as the

gunman and offering a reward for his arrest. >> he is considered armed and dangerous. >> reporter: the georgia bureau of investigation and the fbi and at least 20 law enforcement agencies are working together to find lembrick. on his facebook page the suspect said he was not going to jail. >> this is a dangerous individually and we need to have him off the streets. >> reporter: police say he has outstanding warrants for kidnapping and other charges related to a previous domestic incident but the two officers did not know his background when they responded to the 911 call. georgia southwestern university went into lockdown as a precaution, though the shooting happened off campus. >> campus is safe and at no time were any students involved or in danger. >> reporter: at least five other georgia law enforcement officers have been killed by gunmen so far this year. don champion, cbs news. a knife wielding nevada high school student is in critical condition after being shot by a police officer. the 14-year-old suspect was threatening other students with what appeared to be two knives

yesterday morning at huck high school in reno. students rushed to get out of the way and officers shot the suspect after he refused to surrender. >> there was an altercation between two students on campus. at some point following that altercation, one student, a 14-year-old male had armed himself with a knife. once armed with a knife the student began threatening others on campus. >> reporter: no one was injured and unclear what provoked the incident. this morning, much of the country is engulfed by an arctic deep freeze. temperatures up to 35 degrees below normal stretch from the northern plains south and there is snow, too. so much in north dakota that even tow trucks are getting stuck. there are whiteout conditions and the weather system is spp expected to last for days. eric fisher has details. >> reporter: we continue for watch some of the coldest air qik sometime now the freezer door is open to the arctic and seep down to the northern states

by the end of the week and deep into the southeast by the time we get to saturday morning and looking at at this pattern that will hold on the next seven to ten days. not a short thing but a longer term pattern for this fron. friday morning looking at lows 20 below zero in north dakota and by the time we get to saturday morning, sub freezing air as far south as north florida so freeze are expected there. we will be measuring it in feet down wind of all the great lakes. windy, very cold, mid winter conditions. there is another system we are watching out on the west coast. this one not just bringing mountain snow through the rest of this week but low land snow in and around seattle. very snow levels so wintry conditions really stretching out across the country. i'm meteorologist eric fisher for cbs news. president-elect donald trump continues his thank you tour in iowa today. his latest cabinet appointments

include a climate change denier to head the epa but this morning's headlines is about a growing feud between mr. trump and a union leader who criticized mr. trump's claim to have saved 1,100 jobs in indiana. roxana saberi is here in new york. >> reporter: good morning. the union leader called mr. trump's deal to save jobs at the carrier plant in indiana a promise halfway delivered. soon after that, the president-elect lashed out on twitter. the latest dustup came after indiana's united steelworkers union president chuck jones appeared on cnn and blasting president-elect donald trump for overstating the number of jobs that would be saved as part of the carrier deal. >> we have a lot of our members when the word was coming out of 1,100, they thought that they would have a job. then they find out the next day after friday, that most likely they weren't. 550 were still going to lose their jobs.

>> reporter: moments later, mr. trump fired back on twitter writing, in part, chuck jones has done a terrible job representing workers. no wonder companies flee the country. just last week, the president-elect visited the indiana-based plant to tout the deal to keep 800 jobs in the u.s. >> companies are not going to leave the united states any more without consequences. not going to happen. >> reporter: the comments came as mr. trump made another controversial nomination to his cabinet. tapping oklahoma attorney general scott pruitt to head the environmental protection agency. pruitt has repeatedly sued the epa over fossil fuel regulations. >> it is the most damming thing that i see with respect to our ability to grow as a country. >> reporter: in a statement this year a club said having pruitt in charge of the epa is like putting an arsonist in charge of fighting fires. mr. trump picked lind mcmahon to head the small business administration and john kelly to run the department of homeland

security. mr. trump also travels to the ohio state university in columbus, ohio, today, to meet with first responders and victims of a car and knife attack there last month. the incident left 13 people injured. a campus police officer shot and killed the attacker. >> roxana saberi here in new york, thanks a lot. coming up on "cbs this morning," we will talk to susan page, "usa today" washington bureau chief how the trump administration is shaping up. two juveniles are being held in tennessee charged with starting the wildfires that killed 14 people. the fires damaged or destroyed more than 2,400 homes and other buildings in east tennessee in and near the great smoky mountains national park. the juveniles frare from tennese but not that area. the oakland warehouse fire broke out last friday night. there was a dance party taking

place on the second floor. there were no sprinklers or fire laer alarms. the fast moving smoke and flames trapped the victims. the trial of dylann roof charged of murdering nine people in a black south carolina church resumes today. the attorney called his act cold and calculated and he fired more than 70 times. one witness looked toward roof and described him as evil. roof's attorney suggested he should be spared the death penalty. overseas now. russia said this morning, it is close to reaching an understanding on the besieged syrian city of aleppo. syria rebels are calling for a cease-fire to evacuated wounded virgin islands. the cripple lkremlin said it's agenda. coming up on the "morning news." state lawmakers are trying to

a national job placement company is being sued for allegedly favoring hispanics over african-americans. dean reynolds reports from chicago. >> reporter: mvp staffing is a job placement agency that operates 60 offices in 38 states. its vehicles carry thousands of mostly temporary workers to client companies every day. and it now stands accused of rigging the business against african-americans. built on the testimony of alleged mvp whistle blowers the company charged the company systematically placed hispanics over blacks and for one reason. hispanics were undocumented and less inclined to complain about hours and conditions.
