congress to fight false propaganda littering social media. good morning from the studio 57 newsroom at cbs news headquarters here in new york. good to be with us. i'm anne-marie green. this morning the weather report for a lot of folks is bone chilling cold and a lot of snow. heavy snow and freezing temperatures stretched from the sierras to the great lakes to the northeast. by the weekend single digit wind chills will hit the deep south. the snow and freezing temperatures making travel difficult and dangerous. hanna daniels is here in new york. >> good morning. two separate snow systems have triggered blinding snowstorms that have led to deadly snow pileups in several states. the whiteout conditions and subzero temperatures are expected to last throughout the weekend. as snow plows got to work in upstate new york crews in ohio worked into the night, towing vehicles involved in a major

pileup along interstate 90. >> pretty aggravated about it. i'm trying to get home. >> the chain reaction crash that injured more than a dozen people was one of many triggered thursday by a lake effect snowstorm that brought whiteout conditions to the midwest. in michigan cars and semis were seen smashed together in a deadly pileup along i-96 involving 40 vehicles. >> there are three confirmed fatalities with this accident. we have not yet identified those victims. 11 other victims were transported from the scene. >> the moving storm system dumped more than a foot of snow an hour north of syracuse, new york, yesterday and caused more crashes. >> we want you to get to school, we want you to get to your job safely. so please take your time in the snowy conditions. >> reporter: another system out west coated mountains in california with snow and roads in oregon with ice. at least one motorist was killed in benton county in a head-on collision. >> there's a lot of people

planning on shopping or getting stuff for the christmas season but right now it's not worth it. >> reporter: winter doesn't officially begin for another 12 days. and this winter weather has already led to the cancellation of hundreds of flights. >> i can only imagine. hannah daniels in new york. thank you. chief meteorologist eric fisher of our boston station wbz says the extreme cold will be around for a while. >> the cold has seeped across the country this morning from windchill valleys 20 below 0 in north dakota and as we head towards saturday morning we will wake up to to start the weekend dingell digit and teen wind chills into the deep south. by saturday morning we will see some 20s across north florida, the city center a little milder, but certainly frost and freeze warnings hoisted there. 20s across north georgia, much of mississippi, alabama and south carolina. also watching the lake-effect snow continues to crank, a couple more feet are possible

and the heaviest bands downwind of the great lakes through saturday. we're watching the next storm system moving in for this weekend. by sunday the snow stretching across the midwest, rain on the south side of it. this storm will move toward new england and the northeast as we look toward monday a sloppy start to the workweek. president-elect donald trump continues his thank you tour in grand rapids, michigan, today. last night he was in iowa where he encountered the first protests as he visits states that helped him get elected. earlier it was announced that mr. trump selected fast food krooe andrew pudzer. mr. trump also announced he's nominating iowa governor terry branstad to be the u.s. ambassador to china. mr. trump says china has to start playing by the rules. >> you have the massive theft of intellectual property putting unfair taxes on our companies, not helping with the menace of north korea like they should and

the at-will and massive devaluation of their currency and product dumping. >> and it was announced that mr. trump will keep his executive producer credit on the tv show celeb brit apprentice. coming up on "cbs this morning" we will talk with paul manafort, donald trump's former campaign manager. hillary clinton is calling on congress to fight what she described as a fake news epidemic. during a capitol tribute to retiring senate minority leader harry reid clinton says the issue is a danger that must be addressed quickly. >> it's now clear that so called fake news can have real world consequences. this isn't about politics or partisanship. lives are at risk. >> clinton's people follows an incident in which a gunman occupied a washington pizza restaurant mentioned in a false report linking a sex trafficking ring to clinton. secretary of defense ash carter made an unannounced stop

in afghanistan this morning. carter is there to consult with senior afghan officials and u.s. military commanders concerning the fight against the taliban. he will also deliver a pre holiday pep talk to the approximately 10,000 u.s. troops stationed there. the president of south korea was impeached this morning. the south korean parliament voted to impeach park geun-hye over an influence peddling scandal. she apologized to the nation for negligence. she is south korea's first democratic clee elected leader to be removed from order. the prime minister will serve as acting president. critical video was played at dylann roof's murder trial in charleston. roof is charged with gunning down nine black church goers in a racially motivated attack. surveillance video shows roof pulling into the church parking lot and entering the church. 45 minutes later he's seen cautiously leaving the church holding a black pistol. it was revealed roof's mother suffered a heart attack in court

as prosecutors described her son's actions in their opening remarks. this morning john glenn is being remembered for his courage, patriot and intellect. he was the first american to orbit the earth. he served this country in war and as a swats senator. he died at the age of 95. nancy cordes look at glenn's extraordinary life. >> reporter: from the cosmos to capitol hill and back again john glenn was an astronaut, a politician and a patriot. >> i had i guess you could say 47 years of federal services. 24 years in the senate, 23 years in the marine corps and space program. we've proud of this country and what it provides for people. i still think we are the example for the rest of the world. >> reporter: on february 20th, 1962, john glenn famously became the first american to orbit the earth. >> oh, that view is tremendous. >> reporter: when he came back glenn became a national hero and

received a ticker tape parade in new york city, the largest since world war ii. >> i got on this project because it would probably be the nearest to heaven i would ever get and i wanted to make the most of it. >> reporter: years before he made history glenn flew fighter planes for the marine corps wracking up 149 missions during world war ii and korea. during his four terms in the senate glenn was a key player in democratic politics, but his hero status didn't translate into national political appeal. >> i believe this nation of ours can be number one in this world. >> and his bid for the presidency in 1984 never really got off the ground. glenn's political career took another hit in the late '80s when he and four other senators were investigated for accepting hefty campaign contributions from savings and loan owner charles keating. senator glenn was eventually cleared of wrongdoing but a senate commission found he used, quote, poor judgment.

after serving nearly a quarter century on capitol hill glenn retired from politics in 1998, that same year nearly 40 years after his first nasa journey glenn returned to the stars. >> lift off of discovery with the crew of six astronaut heroes and one american legend. >> reporter: at the age of 77 the first american to orbit the earth made history once again, becoming the oldest human ever to travel into space. the nation's senior astronaut returned to earth with message for other americans his age. >> i think too often people set their lives by the calendar. old folks have ambitions and dreams, too, like everybody else and why don't they work for them? don't sit on the couch slas. that's my attitude. >> reporter: and glenn followed his own advice staying politically active until the end. publicly opposing the decision to end the space program. president obama awarded him the medal of freedom in 2012. now as a nation bids farewell to

special text messages. it settled with the ftc in 2014, more than 2 million customers will be credited $31 on average. more people are expected to fly this holiday season, airlines for america says it expects that 45 million passengers to fly on u.s. airlines from december 16th through january 5th. that's an increase of 3.5% from last year and in part because of an improving economy and reduced airfares. and starbucks is introducing a pokemon go frappuccino. the frozen raspberry and blackberry flavored drink will be available for a limited time and only available at starbucks stores listed as pokemon stops and it is to lure all of those pokemon go players into starbucks. >> it's a good idea. you're going to have all these pokemon go players with their heads down bumping into your customers, at least you can make money off of them. >> just what we need for the rest of us. >> indeed.
