>> federal judge sentences chaka fattah to ten years behind bars. good afternoon, i'm rahel solomon, jim has the day off. earlier this year, fattah convicted of miss spending government grants and charity money.

today his sentence was handed down. "eyewitness news" reporter greg argos is live in front of the federal courthouse where the former congressman just spoke. greg? >> reporter: rahel, good afternoon there is all happening in just the past hour, in fact, the former representative just left the federal courthouse, but chaka fattah of course after being sentenced to ten years in federal prison, for 18 different count of public corruption, money laundering, and bribery charges. >> i want to thank my team, my lawyers, who have done an extraordinary job, we have received a sentence, we respect the court's decision. we won't have much after comment on that. but dow want to thank all of the witnesses who stepped forward and talked today and i want to thank over 200 people who wrote letters to the court on my behalf, and this is a circumstance in which now has

accords dollars the dear termination there is phase of the process has come to a conclusion, and again i want to thank my legal team and i want to thank the support of my family and staff and friends through this very tough time. >> the judge says what happened in the courtroom will be heard throughout the country, are you being made an example, do you believe? now, chaka fattah leaving court this afternoon with his attorneys, not saying much after that brief statement. the judge spending the morning hearing from different -- seven different character witnesses how the former congressman has helped them in their community, then chaka fattah's time to speak. fattah said he personally regrets the decisions he's made, the former congressman convicted of 18 federal corruption counts, including one count of racketeering, five counts of male afraid and bribery charges. federal guidelines allow the judge to sentence fattah between 17 to 22 years in federal prison, this morning, the judge told the former congressman his actions have

consequences, and then sentenced him to ten years behind bars. >> chaka fattah's also an individual, who has done significant things on behalf of the city of philadelphia for a number of years. but, unfortunately, seven years of that period he lost his way and as a result of losing his way he was sentence today a significant period of time in prison by the judge. and the judge appropriately took into consideration the significance of his criminal conduct, but also took into consideration all the work that he's done behalf of the citizens of philadelphia. >> reporter: now the judge allowing chaka fattah to return home but he must self-surrender by january 25th of next year. we're live here at the federal courthouse, greg argos, cbs-3, "eyewitness news". >> greg, thank you. and, thousands of law enforcement officers are gathering in atlantic city to say good-bye to a new jersey state trooper who died in the line of duty last week. joe holden joins us live from atlantic city outside boardwalk hall, joe? >> reporter: rahel, good afternoon, the weather somber and gray, certainly reflective

of the mood as people pause to remember and of course to mourn the life loss of trooper williams. now, at this time right now the funeral services just getting underway inside boardwalk hall. now, we want to go ahead and show this scene earlier this morning, as hundreds of troopers from across the area, the delaware vale, certainly, included, officers from philadelphia, south jersey, north jersey, many of those officers filing past the troopers casket. now, trooper williams was killed in the line every duty last week. he leaves behind a wife of only two months. williams of atlantic county was a member of the 156 police class, graduating just this past january. he was assigned to the port norris station. now, he was killed in that violent wreck last monday on route 55 in millville. investigators say a car was driving irradically, coming at trooper williams the wrong way. it was trooper williams, according to investigators, who was on that roadway, in

the first place, looking for that irradic driver. now the superintendent of the new jersey state police pause to speak with us. >> frankie williams on the job just 11 months, a model trooper. was a model recruit. he always wanted to be a trooper and to see somebody cut down really in the most productive, wonderful time of their life after being married just two months, is horrible. >> reporter: now, at this noon hour, in boardwalk hall behind me, people are recalling the life of a young boy who, as you just heard, always wanted to be a new jersey state police trooper. we will have more on the remembrances and farewell for trooper williams at 5:00 on cbs-3, reporting live in atlantic city, outside boardwalk hall, joe holden, cbs-3, "eyewitness news". >> joe, see you then, thank you. federal judge rules against the green party case for election recount in pennsylvania. the green party wanted to determine the presidential return for, also wanted hands

but get back to average. now today's highs look at that so far getting close to 50 degrees in wilmington, 45 in philadelphia, still in the 30's allentown and in reading. and there is the milder air ahead of the system near 50 in richmond, 48 in d.c. don't get used to it, though, tomorrow, going to get that change back to where it should be for this time of year. certainly will feel like winter by the end of the week, astronomical winter does not arrive until next wednesday, 291st, 5:44 in the morning, when we get the shortest amounts of daylight, nine hours, 19 minutes, 58 seconds. late week arctic blast in our forecast. cold front will come through later today, bridges in seasonable air mass tomorrow, high temperatures mid 40's, some sunshine. wednesday, slightly cooler, still in the 40's, maybe snow shower. here comes the arctic front. thursday, this one means business, even colder than last weekends. talking about highs only in the 20's. so this is way below average, good 20 degrees below average for this time of year. through the afternoon, getting clear skies, rain moves off shore. quiet night tonight. gets cold.

tomorrow morning this commute much better, than what we had this morning, nice and dry. clouds start to rollback in tuesday afternoon. temperatures today, approaching 50 degrees, this afternoon. low to mid 40's, up into the lehigh valley near 40 in the poconos, cold night tonight though. tomorrow morning, certainly wearing the winter coats with temperatures down to the low 20's. and some of the coldest spots, afternoon highs on tuesday, closer to where they should be in the lower and mid 40's. now, thursday, friday, oh, you're going to really feel the chill. highs only in the 20's, you got winds, ten to 20 miles per hour, that puts the windchill values single digits and teens during the day. colds he is air we've had since last february, and at nighttime we will be down into the teens, maybe even some single digits, some of the colds he is spots. the rest of today, late day clearing, milder up around 50 degrees, tonight quiet, partly cloudy, seasonably cold, 29 for the city. colder out in the suburbs, extended forecast pretty quiet next few days. clouds, some sunshine, 40's for highs, then 20's, 28 degrees, for that high on thursday. then friday morning, that's
