moving across the country this morning. a look at how low temperatures a look at how low temperatures will go. captioning funded by cbs good morning, good to be with you, i'm anne-marie green. this morning, president-elect trump plans to announce that exxonmobil chief rex tillerson is his selection for secretary of state, questions about the ties to russia come as congressional leaders say they support investigations into the possible russia cyber attacks to influence the election. hena daniels is here in new york. good morning. >> good morning, anne-marie. overnight, russian president vladimir putin said he's ready to meet with the next president of the united states. in fact, he wants to give mr. trump time to form his administration first. >> reporter: president-elect donald trump hinted of his secretary of state announcement in a tweet. praised rex tillerson in an interview with fox news.

>> he's much more than a business executive. i mean, he's a world class player. >> reporter: the development came moments after top contender mitt romney a strided never trump voice during the campaign confirmed in a facebook post that he was out of the running. saying, quote, my discussions with president-elect trump have been both enjoyable and enlightening. tillerson who has no government experience is expected to face an uphill climb. given close ties to russian president vladimir putin. lawmakers on both sides of the aisle say they support calls for the ceo trying to get trump ele elected. >> i think we ought to approach all of these issues on the assumption that the russians do not wish us well. >> reporter: sources tell cbs news that president-elect will also nominate rick perry to serve as director of energy. the very department he said he would abolish.

mr. trump took to social media last night to address plans for his business dealings. writing two of my children, don and eric, plus executives, will manage them. no new deals will be done during my years in office. president-elect is selected to announce mr. romney's niece for the claire. president obama addressed the alleged russia interference in the presidential election. >> this was not a secret running up to the election. the president-elect in some of his political events specifically said to the russians, hack hillary's e-mails. so that we can finally find out what's going on. and confirm our conspiracy theories. >> now, it was at a campaign appearance back in july that

will trump encouraged russia to spy on hillary clinton. >> russia, if you're listening, i hope you're able to find the 30,000 e-mails that are missing. >> mr. trump said he was only joking. he continues to dismiss reports that russia did anything to help him get elected. but the cia is standing by the assessment that russia tries to smear the election by making embarrassing e-mails. jeff pegues has details. >> reporter: the evidence that russia was trying to influence the election goes back to mid-june when e-mails, opposition research and campaign information stolen before the democratic national committee appeared online. u.s. investigators said the russians were to blame. did their actions impact one candidate over another? >> pie would say that the actions definitely were more detrimental to one candidate than the other. >> reporter: adam myers works

for crowdstrike, the cyber security firm that investigated the hack and works closely with u.s. intelligence. what did you see? >> imagine somebody breaks in a bank and they used some kind of special saw to cut through the safe. we found that saw as they were using it. >> reporter: so you caught them in action? >> we did. >> reporter: myers said it was hackers he nicknamed fancy bearings and cozy bears. the information they obtained was passed on to wikileaks and made public. the hackers also gained access to some republican files but that information never became public. even after being exposed, the hacks against democrats continue. this is pretty bold, pretty brazen in a lot of ways. >> it's very russian. >> reporter: what do you mean by that? >> i don't think that the russians are shy or necessarily pull back after something like that happened. they're doing their thing. >> one reason the cia believes

by the end of the week. here's our windchill values as we look towards wednesday evening. 30 below zero in national falls in bismarck. and heading to chicago, by the time we get to thursday morning, that cold is sliding east. by friday, windchills 30 below zero in vermont, maine and even the higher elevations of massachusetts. record territory, about 15 below in bismarck, 16 in st. louis, the core of that cold sliding east as we head into thursday. the coldest temps northeast arriving on friday. a really frigid stretch. also a bit of good news, moving to the west coast. the next storm system moving into california, heavy rainfall and snow midweek and sliding back down the coast as we get to thursday. that rain will get all the way to southern california, could cause rain and much needed

rainfall there. i'm erik fisher for cbs news. a los angeles flight diverted to new york following a bomb threat was given the all clear. the lufthansa flight called into led quarters in germany. the pilot went in as a precaution last night. passengers and crew were evacuated on the airbus. no one was injured. delta said she did not comply with proper boarding and tech procedures. one witness said she blew by the agent without checking in. she refused to leave the airplane when asked. the woman was taken into custody following the incident. dylann roof, the man accused of killing nine people in a black church had a list of other churches in his car. but roof told the fbi he was too worn out after the shooting at the ame church to do any more.

another record high, though. 15 since the election. the dow gained 39 points. the s&p lost 2 points. nasdaq was also down, losing over 32 points. the federal reserve starts a two-day policy meeting today. it's expected that the fed will raise short-term interest rates for just the second time since the financial crisis. the fed has held interest rates at record lows since the great recession hoping to drive economic growth. a group of 20 investors headed by bill gates is start a $1 billion fund to develop clean energy. the fund plans to make its initial investment next year. the money will initially go to reduce greenhouse emotions, argue culture and manufacturing. >> quest diagnostics said it's been hacked. quest said the health information of about 34,000 customers were exposed. the data includes napes and lab

griffin was trapped inside the massive warehouse fire in oakland, california, 36 people died including griffin. saija was not there. in her grief, she remembered a moment the two shared in new york last year. they had just seen the "book of mormon" on broadway. on facebook she wrote, the city was so beautiful, amist all the lights i got to look at the brightest light of all, i cried and we missed. a photographer nearby captured the moment. saija's red lipstick on griffin's cheek. >> they looked like nobody exists. >> reporter: he took the photo, one of 200,000 on the streets of new york for saija, this became everything. after the fire, she tried to track down the photograph to get a copy. maybe some facebook miracle could happen. please share, she wrote. thousands of people did.

dna evidence is freeing incident people from prison, but often after loosing decades their lives. now, 30 states offer compensation, and less than half of these former prisoners are ver paid. omar villafranca is looking the a case in tennessee. >> reporter: these days, florence kenney can't seem to stand still. how long were you in prison. >> 31 years, 18 days and 20 hours. >> reporter: you have it down to that? >> yes. >> reporter: a jury convicted kenney of rain and burglary in 1978. the victim identified him as one of two men who attacked her in

her bedroom. he was sentenced to 115 years. what's going through your mind when you're hearing that now you're going to prison? >> i still could not believe because i thought that it was a dream or something. >> reporter: in 2008, dna testing of evidence scientifically excluded mckinney as a suspect. prosecutors said if this evidence had been available, there would have been no prosecution. >> i don't have no life. all my life was took away. >> reporter: in 2009, he was released and given $75. since then, mckinney has depended on odd jobs at his church just to pay the bills. under tennessee law, he could be eligible for up to $1 million compensation. but the parole board which hears such cases has requested his request twice. >> in exoneration hearings, we have to have a whole lot of

evidence. she heard mckinney's case. why wasn't the case by the district attorney clear and convincing enough for you? >> because they didn't notice they didn't test everything that was ordered by the original judge to be tested. >> reporter: prosecutors say the two tests tested either had no zan orp so degraded that tests couldn't be performed. do you feel there's a guilty man walking. >> i am not convinced he's innocents. >> it's not justice for him to not receive compensation for being wrongfully imprisoned. >> reporter: mckinney's lawyer has appealed the case. >> i trust another one is not made that does not allow him exoneration. >> reporter: the governor could make a decision at any moment. after waiting 31 years for his freedom, mckinney says he can wait a little longer. omar villafranca, cbs news,
