retaliate against russia for meddling in the u.s. presidential election and that is what president obama says and he says he has spoken directly to russian president vladimir putin about the hacking. and the white house suggested that president-elect donald trump knew about the russian interference. brook silva-braga is here in new york. >> reporter: president-elect trump and president obama were complimentary after their meeting last month but the future of the administration is showing signs of strain over the subject of russia. president-elect donald trump took a victory lap in pennsylvania last night, a state no republican had carried since 1988. >> we won in a landslide. this was a landslide victory. >> reporter: at the event, mr. trump also took aim at white house press secretary josh earnest, who said, thursday, trump not only knew about russian meddling in the election, but encouraged it.

>> this foolish guy, josh earnest. i don't know if he is talking to president obama. the president is very positive but he is not positive, and, i mean, maybe he is getting his orders from somebody else? does that make sense? >> reporter: yesterday, president obama, himself, called out russian hacking in an interview with npr. >> we need to take action and well, at a time and place of our own choosing. some of it may be explicit and publicized. some of it may not be. >> reporter: u.s. intelligence officials believe russian president vladimir putin was directly involved in the hacking of democratic national committee as a way to hurt hillary clinton but the president-elect continues to question those claims, tweeting earlier, if russia or some other entity was hacking, why did the white house wait so long to act and why did they only complain after hillary lost? with 34 days until the inauguration he continuous to

fill out his team. friedman reports hard line israeli positions including settlements in the west bank and moving the u.s. embassy to from tell tel aviv to jerusalem. >> thank you, brook. coming up on "cbs this morning," we will talk to cbs news political director john dickerson about the russian cyberattack. today the blast of arctic air that is producing bone rattling temperatures from the upper midwest to new england is triggering another round of snow he and lots of it. lake-effect snow in upstate new york produced whiteout conditions. wind gusts along the shore approached 70 miles per hour. out west, flood producing rain, as well as strong winds, hit southern california. chief meteorologist eric fisher of our boston station wbz says

this is the first round of some very cold weather. >> the story continues to be the cold this december in stark contrast to last year. mild coast-to-coast but this is what we are waking up to out the door. windchill values well below zero. our high temps this afternoon, not particularly high. very chilly. even some record coldest high temps in parts of new england, staying in the 40s all the way down into north georgia in and around atlanta. we are also tracking this next winter storm. a big swath of winter storm warnings stretching out from the rockies into the great lakes. this is the same system has brought all of the heavy rain across california and now moves coast-to-coast. a swath of snow across the dakotas and into the northeast by saturday morning. you can see the snow totals. a pretty thick blanket here laid right on down the great lakes and into new england by the time we wake up on saturday morning. behind that storm? another blast of arctic air. by sunday morning, approaching 30 below zero in the dakotas, that is record territory and

that 2 is a morning temperature in chicago. during the day, going subzero and make for the coldest bears pplayed.home that they have ever of course, against the packers on sunday. i'm cbs news meteorologist eric fisher. stay warm, everyone. overseas now. this morning, the truce in aleppo, syria, is holding and that is some good news. the evacuation of rebel fighters and civilians continued through the night. dozens of buses are being used to move thousands of people. syrian press bashar al assad hailed the liberation of aleppo from rebel fighters. the u.s. accused the syrian government of carrying out nothing short of a massacre. thousands have been killed in the fighting. and a force of volunteer syrian rescue workers, heroes really known as the white helmets have been rescuing civilians in aleppo who have been trapped by debris from the unrelenting bombings. 154 white helmets have been killed in the line of duty. on "60 minutes" sunday, scott

pelley has more on the white helmets and he takes us on their dangerous rescues. things are tense just north of seattle, washington. an officer has been shot in the head and now the suspect is holding police at bay. he is holed up in a house and he is still shooting. the wounded officer was respondeding to a call that someone had been shot when the suspect opened fire. it's believed the gunman is holding at least one hostage. he is known to police but it's not known dui he started shooting. the wounded officer is in critical condition. next months, the same jury that found dylann roof guilty of federal hate crimes for the murder of nine people at a charleston church will decide if gets the death penalty. the jury convicted roof yesterday and as mark strassmann reports, it didn't take long for the panel to come to that decision. >> reporter: dylann roof's jury took two hours to find him guilty of gunning down nine bible studiers in a church because they were black. >> oh, my goodness.

i could go on and on. >> reporter: sanders survived the attack and her son was killed in front of her. during her testimony, she called out roof for refusing to look at her. >> that goes to show you how cold and callus he is. you slaughtered nine people and you sit there and don't even look? >> reporter: federal prosecutor nathan williams called roof a man of immense hatred who commended an act of tremendous coward science. prosecutors showed roof buying the murder weapon and firing it in his backyard. going to the mother emanual church and leaving after the killings carrying a glock 45. >> di it. >> reporter: defense lawyer conceded to jurors that roof was guilty but suggested mental illness. the massacre had a mad energy

and there is something wrong with roof's perception with how he is taking in reality. sharon risher watched every day of the trial. she lost her mother, ethyl lance, and two of her cousins in roof's rampage. >> some people would say dylann roof is the poster child upon the death penalty? >> white. that's true. if this case didn't warrant the death penalty, then i don't know what case would have. >> reporter: roof faces the death penalty in the next faces of trial which begins january 3rd. and he wants to act as his own lawyer. the judge told him, that's fine, you can do that, but you can't change your mind once the penalty phase begins. mark strassmann, cbs news, charleston, south carolina. >> that was mark strassmann reporting. now an update on pizza gate. the man who chased a fictitious internet conspiracy to a washington pizza restaurant and opened fire is due in federal court today. edgar welch has been indicted on

parton is giving out thousand dollar checks to people affected by the tennessee wildfires. nearly $9 million has been raised since the smoky mountain fires began just two weeks ago. parton had a telethon this week. the singer is from the area where the fire killed 14 people and caused 5000,000 in damage. facebook has announced new efforts to eliminate fake news and a cop is charged in a deadly shooting. those are some of the headlines on the morning newsstand. milwaukee's journal sentinel reports the filing of reckless homicide charges against a former city police officer. the killing of a suspect last august by dominique hagan brown sparked two days of rioting. the officer was fired two months ago over an unrelated sexual assault case. the star tribune of minneapolis reports a protest by the university of minnesota football team. they say they won't play or practice until ten players are back on the team.

the players were suspended by the school due to sexual assault allegations. the team has a bowl game scheduled later this month. the hill says a court has ordered donald trump to give a deposition in his case against a celebrity chef. the president-elect is suing jose andre s for $10 million because he refused to open a restaurant in trump's new washington hotel. the chef started trump's sharp anti-criticism for his statements. mr. trump must testify during the first week of january. "the new york times" outlines the steps facebook is taking to label fake news story. the company says its new tools will be easy for users to flag information. facebook will also work with the associated press and other fact checking organizations to authenticate stories. "the boston globe" says a for-profit college and its parent company will pay $100 million to settle a deceptive
