to undo. and from the stands to center court. a special warriors fan steals the spotlight to the delight of the crowd. good morning from the studio 57 newsroom at cbs news headquarters here in new york. good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. well, at least 29 people were killed by a string of devastating explosions at a fireworks market just outside mexico city. powerful change reaction leveled the market. at least 2,000 people were there as shoppers stoblegcked on fires to celebrate christmas and new year year's. 72 others were injured and some with severe burns.

vendors were to charred mass and rubble. nearby homes were damaged. this was the third explosion and fire to tear through that marketplace since 2005. the manufacturer and sell of fireworks is a key part of the local economy. german authorities are hunting for the person responsible for monday night's attack on a berlin christmas market. officials admit that they are not sure if there was one or several attackers. isis says it's responsible for the attack that left 12 dead and 48 injured. charlie d'agata is in berlin with more. charlie, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, anne-marie. some of the questions germans are asking today who is this killer or killers, where are these killers, and can they catch these killers before they strike again. german police say they received something like on 500 tips from the public but, strangely, no photo foots or ccct footage of

the suspect in considering he just rammed a truck into a christmas market packed with members of the public. you would have thought that somebody had some video footage and that is what police have asked for. this is hand on an added urgency after isis claimed responsibility for the attack, saying that one of its kojs of the kalivet was responsible. they don't intend to cry wolf of these matters. during the search, the police had to let go of the only suspect they have, a pakistani asylum seeker. the reason was he was arrested an hour after the attack. it was a person inside the truck, the hijacked truck, the polish driver who had been shot and stabbed. the suspect they had had no blood on him or dna so after a few questions and looking evidence, they had to let him go, so they are at square one. >> charlie, just a quick question before you go. what is german chancellor angela

merkel saying and how she is handling this situation? >> angela merkel came to visit the christmas area here, the vigil and laid a few flowers. she is very saddened and heartbroken. her political situation is on on the line because she opened up her arms in her country to these asylum seekers and, in her words, she said this would be truly hard to bear if the killer turns out to be an asylum seeker. she knows what she may be dealing with here and knows the rising tensions and anxiety and, of course, the anger if the killer or killers responsible for what happened here at the christmas market turn out to be one of the people that have come into the country, one of the hundreds of thousands of people who have come into germany the past, say, year and a half. >> indeed. she is certainly being criticized by some of her opponents about her immigration

policy. charlie d'agata in berlin, thank you. coming up on "cbs this morning," we will speak with ali soufan about the berlin attack. as they search for clues in the brazened assassination of russian's ambassador to turkey they are trying to determine if the gunman acted alone or had help. holly williams reports. >> reporter: by the way, andrey karlov body sent home to rush and his wife bowed over by grief. karlov was killed by a 22-year-old turkish police officer apparently in revenge for russian's intervention in the deadly conflict. several people have now reportedly been detained as the

turk irk authorities investigate. it follows a string of deadly bombings in turkey, many of them connected with the syrian war. moscow's air strikes have helped the syrian regime win back the city of aleppo, but the cost has been counted in syrian lives. tens of thousands have been forced to flee. rusch and turkey are on opposite sides in the syrian even a warming between turkey and russia won't stop syria's bloodshed from spilling over its borders. a team of russian investigators has now arrived in turkey. they and the turks want to know whether the assassin acted alone or on behalf of a terrorist organization. holly williams, cbs news, near the turkey/syria border. well, russia and turkey and

iran officials say they are the west bet for a peace deal. they met yesterday in moscow. john kerry was informed about the negotiations by phone. president obama banned future oil and gas drilling leases in much of u.s.-owned waters in the arctic ocean and certain areas of the atlantic. in the atlantic, the waters placed offlimits stretch from the new england coast to virginia. the president used the provision in a 1953 law in off band offshore permanently. president trump opposes these actions. today, north legislators meet in a special session to consider repealing the called bathroom law. after the city of charlotte passed a broad anti-discrimination bill.

a manhunt the under way in germany for the person or persons responsible for the truck attack on a crowded berlin christmas market. 24 people were killed and 48 others injured monday. a man taken into custody was released and isis says it's responsible for the attack. at least 29 people were killed by a series of explosions at a fireworks market outside mexico city. the market was filled with holiday shoppers. another 72 were injured and it is unclear what set off the original blast. this is the third fire and large explosion at the market since 2005. in washington, d.c. a new law would provide the most
