cbs3 "eyewitness news". counting down until santa's arrival. it's festive in philadelphia as franklin square tonight. will it be merry and bright when eveng, i'm greg argos.as natasha brown is off tonight. after a soggy start to the day it's a clear night perfect conditions for santa. meteorologist lauren casey in the cbs3 weather sent with her holiday forecast. hey there, lauren. >> hey, greg, we did start off with a soggy saturday to kick off our christmas holiday weekend and rainfall amounts we did pick up much immediate needed rainfall healthy totals across parts of the area. seven tenths of an inch in kennett square. millville .60 of an up inch. dove half an inch. philadelphia international airport four terms of an inch of rain. no precipitation for san tan the reindeer. looking good. lingering clouds and we are starting to see fog settle into parts of the area. especially down the shore reduced visibles down to about

shirts, pants, what else we get. >> necklaces. all that kind of junk. >> all that kind of junk. >> nearly half of the shoppers this year are still going to brick and mortar stores despite the increasing popularity of online shopping. >> if you finish holiday shopping time to get to midnight mass at pennsylvania' largest catholic church. ♪ >> archbishop charles chaput will lead mass services tonight and tomorrow morning at cathedral basilica of saints peter and paul 18th street in the ben franklin parkway. the leader of the roman catholic church celebrated midnight mass this christmas pope francis urging followers to honor the birth of christ by thinking about children suffering in the world today. the pope also telling the faithful not to get caught up in the commercialization of christmas. there used to catching bad guys but on this christmas eve one

south jersey town had some extra patrols out hoping to capture something else. a glimpse of santa. "eyewitness news" reporter alexandra hoff gives a close sr. look what they ended up catching on camera. >> reporter: dash cam footage is a major asset for law enforcement and citizens. >> they catch crimes in progress, evidence of crime. you know, we use them for everything. >> reporter: but this time last year, evesham township new jersey a police dash cam picked up something almost unbelievab unbelievable. >> it's one of the most unusual things we've caught on a dash camera. >> while patrolling a rural road santa's sleigh was caught passing directly over an officer's crews sr. last year the sleigh was flying fast at extremely low altitude. if you get a glimpse of this year do not approach. >> back off and let him do his job. the quicker he can get in and out the faster everybody gets their presents in due to the

2015 siting they upped their patrols this year in hopes of catching another glimpse. >> eyes are up looking to see what they can see. hoping to catch something spectacular out there. >> reporter: well, we have an update. following our earlier interview it seems that evesham township officer was able to turn on his body worn camera just in time to capture santa passing again. clocking this year at 209 miles per hour. in a statement the department said that officers continued to respond to quote town wide reports of low flying aircrafts and suspicious noises on rooftops. at this hour authorities suggest getting cookies out and kids into bed so that santa can arrive without incident. in evesham township, alexandra hoff cbs3 "eyewitness news". now before santa's sleigh departed he stopped by a local hospital. saint nick cheered up the patients at st. christopher's hospital for children this afternoon. of course he came with plenty of toys and he cannot do it without volunteer helpers.

today comes from people who are inspired by terrorist ideologies but operate end pent of a terrorist organization. >> the fbi says that historically speaking lists like the one releas released by isisr resulted in a successful terror attack. a tragic christmas eve unfolds in south philadelphia. 81-year-old woman was killed in the grocery store she has owned for years. across the street from the house she's lived in her entire life. police say shortly before 9:00 a.m. a man walked in a marie's grocery store on sickth street and wharton and shot marie buck pell times. she died shortly after. police have not yet made any arrests. if you were out last night, you may have smelled it. that stench which swept across parts of philadelphia and even buck county yesterday evening apparently came from across the river. the odor which resembled rotten eggs originated from the pbf energy refinery in paulsboro after a brief loss of power there.

[ laughter ] >> i had enough. >> the store is up for sale and after 106 years sonny hopes the new owners continue the tradition his grandfather started at the beginning of the last century. >> if someone is interested in running a butcher shop, um, i would would be interested in meeting them and qualifying them and teaching them. >> you'll miss your customers. >> terribly. yeah. that's my social interaction. >> those customers many who have visited sonny for years -- >> you can't get meats like this anywhere else. nowhere else. that i know of. >> goes all the way back to my grandmother. started a catering business and she used to come here in and purchase her meats for the business. >> hope the new owners whatever the business keep at least some of the charm sonny created after all of this time. >> you never find like this around.

sky scrapers lit up in red and green. 43 degrees. winds 5 miles an hour. foles like 40 degrees right now and temperatures pretty consistent all across the regi region. little bit cool in the poconos down to 34 degrees. we're at 43 in trenton and 41 degrees right now in millville. when you wake up as we wake up on our christmas morning, seeing santa and reindeer delivered 35 degrees in philadelphia. little bit chillier up towards the lehigh valley at 31 degrees. we'll have some 20s in store in the poconos near 30 degrees in berks county. christmas high temperature forecast in philadelphia heading up to 48 degrees. that's about 5 degrees above our average but of course nowhere near that record of 68 degrees for our warmest christmas set back in 1964 and also in 2015. checking in on temperatures in some christmas themed towns and cities across the united states tomorrow comet north carolina top at 53 degrees. rudolph, ohio 35. warm day in christmas, florida, 81 degrees. that's nice. north pole oklahoma at someone

degrees. much chillier in antler, north dakota way high temperature of 20. and snowflake, arizona coming in at 53 on the christmas holiday. storm scan3 showing us. quieter conditions than we contend with for the first half of the day. few passing clouds right now and areas of fog but some well out west are seeing a bit of snow for this christmas eve across portions of arizona up into utah, colorado, idaho as well and even montana seeing some snow showers passing on through. certainly making for a festive seen this evening. further weather showing us some sunshine in store for christmas sunday as we head into the evening hours if you have to hit the roads, no problems weather wise as we head into monday morning, we could see little bit of freezing rain breaking out very locally up towards the lehigh valley and poconos so do keep that in pipe. this is monday morning. quiet elsewhere but we will see some late day showers starting to develop across the area on monday evening with a best chance of rain coming on monday night over the next several da days. but for tomorrow dry conditions, mostly sunny, clear for

straight to his work and filled i wasly stockings then turned with a jerk and laying his finger aside of his knows and giving a nod up the chimney he rose. he sprang to his sleigh to his team gave a whistle and away they all flu-like the down of a thistle. but i heard him exclaim as he drove out of sight, merry christmas to all, ton all a good night.
