>> live from the cbs broadcast center in philadelphia, this is cbs3 "eyewitness news". well it is a chilly christmas night but our holiday week is shaping up to be a warm one for late december, but first a few of us could actually see wintry weather when you wake up in the morning. freezing rain advisory has been issued for parts of the area.

good evening everyone i'm natasha brown. we have a little bit of everything for you in our holiday week forecast. let's get right over to meteorologist lauren casey sorting all of this out for us. hey there, lauren. >> hey, natasha. merry christmas to you a pleasant day across the delaware valley to enjoy the holiday. we had all of that sunshine and high temperatures running above average at 50 in philly topped at 50 in the lehigh valley and 49 degrees in atlantic city. but we are starting to chill off under clear skies. 43 degrees your current temperature in philadelphia. we have already fallen back into the 30s in the lehigh valley and 33 degrees right now in millville and storm scan3 showing us we do have clear sky conditions in place for the cloud deck will start to increase overnight tonight as this very dynamic system across parts of the upper midwest moves its way eastbound it will be weakening as it makes an approach but could give some of us some periods of freezing rain and drizzle especially as we head into tomorrow morning. so do keep that in mind. if you do have to hit the roads after the holiday freezing rain advisory in effect for the lehigh valley berks county until

11am for the poconos until 4:00 p.m. tomorrow. so on the roads clear and quiet for tonight but watching out for that chance of freezing rain to the north and west. and for tomorrow evening, we do have a shower chance across the area. we'll talk about that plus that chance at a 60-degree reading this week and your new year's forecast all that's coming up. >> oh, my goodness. thank you so much, lauren. merry christmas everyone happy holidays to you this holiday season is bringing out the best in people. joy of the toys was certainly felt this morning at a home in kensington. "eyewitness news" reporter anita oh explains why these children almost didn't have any gifts to open this year. >> reporter: the smiles on these faces christmas morning were not a guarantee. >> neither were these gifts. >> play dough. smiter man puzzle. >> reporter: taylor family lost everything in a house fire in kensington back in october. >> all our potions. um, clothes, shoes.

>> reporter: since then they've been staying with relative. >> when i got there i was just in total shock. you know, just thanking god no one was hurt and everybody was okay. >> reporter: tailors participated in the salvation army adopt a family program which links people or businesses to families in need to fulfill the holiday wish lists family members. and all four kids also received toys through cbs3's annual toy of sharing toy fest which collected more than 6,000 toys for needy families. >> thank you for everything. everything that you did for me, my family and other families out there. that was the best part about it the kids that was in the house they were okay. everything else i could slowly but surely get it back. >> reporter: when you ask these children what christmas means about to themselves more about what they're given and more about what they already have. >> what did you want for christmas this year. >> my family. >> reporter: that doesn't mean they're not having some fun, too. what's the best thing that you

got this year? >> this tent. >> reporter: in kensington -- >> merry christmas! >> reporter: -- anita oh, cbs3 "eyewitness news". awesome. they had great christmas today. a church in cobbs creek meantime spread a little extra holiday cheer as well during their service today. the church of christian compassion handed out 500 toys to kids of all ages following their life christmas nativity. over 75 gift bags were given tout seniors for christmas. each year the church helps struggling families throughout the holiday season. people attended church services all across to celebrate christmas today. ♪ >> "eyewitness news" attended the 8:00 a.m. mass at the cathedral basilica of saints peter and paul in center city. the service featured traditional christmas carols organist. basilica held services yesterday to celebrate christmas eve.

>> bon natale. estimated 40,000 people gathered to hear pope francis' traditional christmas day message from saint peter's square today. the pope wished piece to those who have loved ones that were lost to terrorism and he also pressed the international community to find a solution to the war in syria. and urged the israelis and palestinians to abandon hate and revenge. >> listen to him carefully and i reallreally admire him. i believe he has something to offer for the world. >> the pope also mentioned the poor saying he wished piece to those who suffer because of greed and society's need of money. and not just christmas celebrations as tonight also marked the second night of hanukkah. "eyewitness news" in suburban square hard more where people gathegathered for menorah it lo. event included donut decorating and zapped art. hanukkah is the jewish festival of lights and runs until january 1st. 7.7 magnitude earthquake

shook southern chile today. the quake struck a sparsely populated area about 800 miles south of capital santiago just before 11:30 local time. 4,000 people have been evacuated from the coast following fears of a tsunami much the quake left only minor damage so far and no deaths have been reported. also, tonight, russian authorities are now investigating the cause of a military plane crash in the black sea. all 84 passengers and eight crew members are feared dead. according to the defense ministry in russia, the plane crashed just two minutes after take off from sochi. the plane was headed to syria carrying members of the world famous russian army choir. the choir was scheduled to perform for russian troops on new year's eve. and tonight, a memorial is growing by the day at the scene of a deadly christmas eve shooting. flowers, candles and teddy bears now sit on the steps at marie's grocery on sixth wharton in south philly.

yesterday morning, the owner 81-year-old marie buck was shot inside the store and died shortly after being rush to the hospital. police do not have any leads so far in this case. authorities meantime are investigating the cause of a second floor house fire in delaware county. the fire department responded to a call of this fire on marlboro lane in glenns mills just before 2:00 p.m. today. the fire caused extensive damage to the second floor of the home. >> it was in the crawlspace of the attic and the second floor. so once it gets in the walls, we have to try to fine it before it gets too extensive. >> firefighters were able to put the fire out before it reached the first floor. the cause is still unknown at this point. of course it's christmas day but today is also very important for another historical event. stay with us. an annual tradition along the delaware river actually. watch as george washington and his troops cross the river a tribute to a daring journey on christmas day 1976.

we do have breaking news now. singer george michael has died. the cbs evening news has confirmed the singer's death through his publicist. only saying that he passed away peacefully at his home. george michael rose to fame in the '80s first with the duo wham and then as a solo artist. he was just 53 years old. now on christmas day in 1776 george washington and his troops made daring journey both 2400 soldiers works hundred horses, 18 can cross the delaware river from pennsylvania to new jersey. they fought a christmas day battle which was a turning point in the revolutionary war. every year that journey is reenacted and cbs3 photojournalist ed spay shares the sights and sounds of today's event. ♪ >> ladies and gentlemen, what you're seeing now is the advanced party going across the river. >> we came up today for the first time to watch them cross

war. >> my goness great to see the reenactment there. so good to see they had good weather today. >> yeah, what beautiful day today. >> it was. >> lovely. >> mild temperatures, bright sunshine all throughout the day. chi chi out in their christmas sweaters. >> her dogs are adorable. so well dressed. >> they're very festive. it was a beautiful day to get outside for a little bit on this christmas holiday. now we are under the cover of darkness but still have clear skies as we get live look at center city philadelphia. buildings lit up in green and red. very festive as well. 43 degrees right now. winds are cal and so no wind chill impact. we like that. your head weather headlines we'll make a run at 60 degrees not too bad for the last week of december. we do have one kind of showery night in store and then we'll have that brief warmup as temperatures are going to become much colder as we head into the new year. but item temperatures right now chilly but right around where we should be much 43 degrees in philadelphia. 39 in allentown. we're at 40 degrees right now in dover.

but we do have this warmer air mass just off to our south with temperatures in the 50s, 60s and 70s. that is going to start to build in as we head into the upcoming week so expecting above average temperatures as we head into monday. then we make that run at 60 degrees as we head into tuesday we get briefly chillier as we head into wednesday kind of a little bit of a rebound into thursday before we get a dose of some arctic air returning settling as we head into friday with high temperatures taking a big tumble by the start of next weekend but overnight tonight, down to 32 degrees partly cloudy with little bit of a chilly brees picking out of the northeast for our monday mostly cloudy conditions with passing sprinkle or shower possible. very light in intensity but temperatures running more than 5 degrees above average up to 50 degrees once again. storm scan3 showing us a trend to the day of the day and that is quite conditions across the delaware valley. but we do have this very intense system across portions of the upper midwest check this out. ice storm in minneapolis and now

thunderstorms are approaching for christmas night. this system will continue to work itself eastbound it is going to weaken as it makes an approach but it will provide us some energy where we could see some periods of freezing rain and drizzle starting off tomorrow morning as we look to our north and western counties so do you see pink breaking out there berks county up into the lehigh valley and poconos tomorrow morning so do keep that in mind. we do have a chance at a late day shower again very light in intensity across portions of the i-95 corridor and as we head into monday night, that's going to be our best chance of rain over the next several days seeing some showers moving in but, again, you're not seeing a lot of up tensity there. also, not very widespread. could see spotty shower into tuesday morning. so that could hamper your commute a bit. you can see that from some of our rainfall amount project as we head monday and into the first part of tuesday. that's in philadelphia maybe picking up about a tenth to .20 of an inch of rainfall with some of the shower activity. so as we head into the day tomorrow, down the shore, mostly

cloudy conditions. if you have to hit the road from grandmom's house after the holiday weekend 52 degrees. but do watch out for that chance of freezing rain and drizzle especially for the first half of the day and into midday carbon and monroe counties with that freezing rain advisory neck for the poconos until 4:00 p.m. a high temperature only at 39 degrees. in your seven day forecast, there it is on tuesday. that chance at 60 degrees calling it 58 right now. chillier by wednesday but sunshine, 45 degrees. possibly some rain on thursday we're back up to 48 but then that colder arctic air moves in on friday. it's not really going foal that great on friday windy conditions, highs only in the upper 30s. and then 41 degrees next saturday for the last day of 2016. >> i know. it went so fast. >> i know. >> it flew. >> enjoy the nice weather for a couple days. >> thank you lauren. appreciate it. we're all here. >> yay! >> barely even the eagles are off da-da too. >> not us.

then less than minute on the clock, check out marcus smith. huge three-point shot right there. boston take the lead. and goes on to win this one, 119-114. be lebron james and the cavs hosting the warriors. we'll pick up the game for you in the fourth. game is tied. lebron james flies on in for the jam. lebron finished with 31 points for the day. but then we can forget about steph curry who answers right back with a monster three-point shot right there to give the warriors a three-point lead. later in the game, the clock ticking down. cavs down by one. irving with the fade away jumper cavs take the lead and go on to 1109-108. a good game. >> i read everybody tweeting about it. i guess i should have tuned in.
