now at 11:00, breaking news. legendary actress debbie reynolds has died. her death comes just one day after the death of her daughter carrie fisher. good evening everyone, i'm jessica dean. >> and i'm nicole brewer in for yukee washington tonight.

debbie reynolds reportedly suffered a stroke. her son said the family is heart broken. debbie reynolds was just 19 years old when she landed a leading role in the iconic 1952 film "singing in the rain" opposite gene kelly. she became america's sweetheart shooting into stardom on the big screen and small. she appeared in a number of movie musicals. she earned an academy award nomination for her title role in "the insinkable molly brown." she was born in texas april 1, 1932. her family moved to southern california where a miss burbank crown led to a movie studio contract and a new stage name, debbie reynolds. at 23 years old.

reynolds found romance with singer eddie fisher. the couple had two children together including actress carrie fisher. but their star-studded marriage ended in scandal when fisher left reynolds for her best friend, actress elizabeth taylor. reynolds late rear veeld they made up. >> she was just as dumb as i was. >> reporter: reynolds continued to search for love. >> my personal life is always like that chain that says i think i can, i think i can. i seem to marry very poorly, i have no taste in men. >> reporter: as her film career waned in the '07s, she turned to broadway and the nightclub circuit. she later became a fixture in las vegas opening her hotel and casino. she was also a notable collector of film memorabilia. >> it was always too much.

but then life should be that. >> reporter: during her career reynolds was nominated for more than a dozen awards including golden globes, emmies and that os correspond. debbie reynolds was 84 years old. and as we mentioned it was just yesterday her daughter carrie fisher hassed away at the page of 60. she reportedly suffered a heart attack on a flight from london to los angeles. the stress of his sister's death was too much for his mother. now she's with carrie. >> a wintry mix is headed our way and could make for a sloppy morning commute. meteorologist kate bilo is tracking the timing of the system. and who could see accumulating snow. >> it's all about location both in real estate and also in winter weather sometimes. and here's the system that's going to deliver this quick-hitting punch of rain, snow and possibly the mix of the two. it's really getting its act

together now in parts of ohio down into kentucky and over west virginia, that's where some heavy rain is now falling. we've got mountain snow into west virginia and some pretty steady snow over ohio. the areas seeing this storm overnight, by the time it gets into our area tomorrow morning, there's a good chance for most of us it will be a rain maker. temperatures right now definitely cold enough to support some snow. it's in the 20s in reading, 23 in allentown. still sitting above freezing in philadelphia. temperatures expected to gradually rise as this system approaches pulling in moisture from the south and that will help that changeover occur pretty quickly tomorrow morning. but in the poconos this could stay snow for an extended period of time and we've got a within the weather advisory in effect from 5:00 a.m. until 4:00 tomorrow. i'll tell you how much snow they can expect in this area and we'll time out the progression of tomorrow's messy weather which commutes could be impacted and a look at your new year's

forecast. mick oel? >> thank you, kate. and when you wake up to this wintry weather, but sure to tune into eyewitness news this morning. our team is on starting at 4:30 until 7:00. we'll get you prepared with the latest weather and also traffic conditions before you head out the door. >> the search is over for a missing south jersey woman and her great granddaughter. both were found tonight on virginia. they disappeared on christmas eve after leaving mays landing heading to north carolina to see family. they were found today in virginia. david spunt is more in our sat center with more on this. >> reporter: i've learned that 71-year-old barbara briley is in serious condition. she regained consciousness later. authorities say the five-year-old, her great granddaughter is doing okay tonight. it's been a brutal four nights for the briley family. 71-year-old barbara and

5-year-old lamira were on their way to north carolina christmas eve to visit family. they never made it. the family panicked and police searched for clues. according to authorities they were found south of richmond virginia in a dark, see included area about 7 miles from i-85. they were sitting inside barbara's car on private property. the property owner called police. barbara was flown to vcu medical center for treatment. authorities tell our affiliate in richmond, lamira is fine but was taken to a hospital for an evaluation. during the search authorities discovered a ping from briley's cell in rural virginia but her bank card was used in mays landing. a surveillance video showed barbara in a virginia gas station. eyewitness news spoke to her grandson wednesday afternoon. >> there's so many things that don't make sense, how was she

local here, cell phones signal went off in virginia. it's little pieces and we're not really sure what's going on. >> reporter: those details will be sorted out later as authorities continue their investigation. but the family's focus, this 71-year-old and five-year-old, who are both safe tonight. and authorities are not releasing details about mrs. briley's medical condition. her family in new jersey went down to virginia just a few hours ago. reporting live tonight, i'm david spunt cbs3 eyewitness news. >> david, thank you. a beth le him pennsylvania man is facing murder charges tonight. this is the suspect who was arraigned in new york city. police say he strangled his ex lover and drowned their four-year-old son. court documents claim he was tired of paying child support and he didn't approve of the way she was raising the child. the woman was fired four years ago if from her job as a new

york city public schoolteacher after it was revealed she conducted a sexual relationship with the man who was a student of herself. caught on surveillance video a burglar smashes his way into a kohls. he used a sledge hammer to break the glass on the locked front doors. once inside the suspect went straight forth jewelry counter. the burglar got away with about 60,000 and $1 hundred,000 worth of jewelry and watches. >> he was caring an old style tool bag made of canvas, he was also wearing black gloves, jeans and some distinct sneakers. >> authorities are examining surveillance cameras outside the building to see if the burglar had an accomplice. some local police

departments are paying closer attention. one of those happened tuesday night at philadelphia mills in northeast philadelphia. four people there were arrested. police departments like cherry hill were making their presence known in their local shopping areas. uniformed and undercover officers are on patrol inside and out. >> it's obviously easier for us to stop it before they get into the mall than try to clear it out once we have 100, 200, 300 kids in the mall. >> police are also asking for the parents' help. they say do not simply drop your child off at the mall unattended and pick them up hours later. chopper 3 was over a big sinkhole in bethlehem today that led to evacuations. about 20 homes had to be evacuated this morning. it took several hours for crews to get a handle on a natural gas leak. the entire block was evacuated over structural concerns but

residents were back tonight. president-elect donald trump continued his transition to the white house meeting with a variety of people. he also made a brief appearance this afternoon to make an announcement about jobs. >> reporter: president-elect donald trump told reporters at his palm beach estate that more jobs are coming to the united states. >> i was just called by the head people at sprint and they're going to be bringing 5,000 jobs back to the united states. they're taking them from other countries. >> reporter: he also said the start-up one web will hire people. they announced they will build saturday lights. both companies are controlled by a japanese billionaire, a founder and chief executive of japan's soft bank technology company. in early december he told reporters he plans to capitalize on the president-elect's promise to deregulate business.

>> we are going to invest 50 billion into u.s. and create 50,000 new jobs. >> reporter: president obama is still on vacation in hawaii. he called mr. trump wednesday morning to discuss the transition of power. the white house says the call was positive. >> he had a very general conversation, very, very nice. i appreciated that he called. >> reporter: earlier trump tweeted that president obama was throwing up roadblocks in the transition process. he reemerged later in the evening with boxing promoter don king at his side. mr. trump said he discussed reforming veterans. friends said in a statement that the jobs will support a variety of functions and it will begin discussions immediately with its business partners, states and cities to determine the right locations in the u.s. to create these jobs. in one last policy speech, secretary of state john kerry

pressed israel to change its policy on settlements. in that speech kerry defended the obama administration's decision to allow the passage of the universitied nations resolution condemning the settlements in the west bank and eastern jerusalem. he said israel needs to pursue. >> if the choice is one state israel can either be jewish or democratic. it cannot be both. and it won't ever really be at peace. >> israel's prime minister had harsh words for kerry. he says israel does not need to be lectured by foreign governments. netanyahu says he looks forward to working with president-elect trump. >> straight ahead at lech:00, why investigators want amazon to hand over audio from alexa.

an amazon echo is at the center of a murder investigation in arkansas. investigators have gotten a search warrant. they suspect alexa may have recorded something pertinent before victor collins was found drowned last year. bates is the main suspect. now his father says he supports his son and says that any information gleaned from the echo won't tell the whole story. >> just very difficult and if

it's used erroneously can be used just exactly what i see it doing in this case, which is proving or looking like it's proving something that isn't there. that creates a false illusion and a false perception which i think it's really sad. >> amazon is hand over bates' account details but so far amazon has declined to give police the voice recording. emergency responders rescue a base jumper after something went terribly wrong during a high-flying stunt in phoenix. video captured the man hitting the wall. he was rushed to a local hospital with serious injuries. officials say while base jumping is not illegal, they do not recommend people do it. in buffalo, new york, a high school class photo from 1944 was missing one graduate until now. walter graduated 72 years ago but he had to leave school to fight in world war ii.

so he's missing in the class photo. at a ceremony today, the school unveiled a new framed photo and it now includes him. >> it's terrific. three generations of our family who have had graduates here and it's great to be able to have this place an alumni history here. >> the high school president did joke a little bit that he checked his transcripts to make sure he had all his credits. new tonight a random act of kindness. a good samaritan saw a car with a parking ticket on the windshield on the 2100 block of hamilton street. somebody put that ticket in an envelope with a $50 bill. it read parking tickets suck, merry christmas. they were stunned at the kindness of the gesture. >> who walks around with a bunch of 50s on an impulse. >> and hands an envelope. >> has an envelope with them and

a pen. >> both men say they plan on spending the money on someone else to keep the good energy going in the universe. >> that's good karma right there. >> pay it forward. >> parking ticket fairies. >> we're all going to wake up to a messy morning whether you're dealing with rain, snow or a mix of the two. it's not a great way to start off your thursday. it's going to be slow go for the morning commute so you will need to pack your patience and give yourself extra time as you head out the door in the morning. that said this is not a major snow maker. if you're not in our suburbs this is mainly going to be rain. it's a close call though. let's take a look outside right now. take you out to our roof cam which is quiet for a moment. clouds are moving in very quickly and as the clouds start to move in, we'll start to see those temperatures rising a bit as we head towards day break.

let's take a peek at what this storm is doing now. you can see the clouds creeping into central pennsylvania right now but the storm is off to the west. there you see it gathering strength, it's pruzing snow around the cleveland area into central ohio and this is all progressing eastward just in time for tomorrow morning. and only one commute that will be impacted and that's tomorrow morning's commute by the afternoon the system will be out of here. at the dover air force base right now it's 35 degrees, in lumberton, new jersey, 26. chilly in medforward with temperatures in the mid 20s but temps will rise enough that it looks like just rain. it could start as a brief wintry mix even perhaps here in philadelphia certainly in our far north and west suburbs. light accumulations expected to the north, mainly the lehigh valley and up into the poconos but it will be a slow-go during the morning rush. the very, very early part of the morning rush, if you're an early

riser you hit the road between 5:00 and 7:00 a.m., there could be slick spots. you know what to do especially if snow is falling. if you're not looking for snow tomorrow morning, 5:00 a.m. it's looking as though the precip is off to the west. the latest this waits the more the temperatures will rise. we'll see temperatures in the upper 30s and 40s by 7:00 a.m. that means the rain/snow line starts off pretty far to the north. watch how quickly the rain invades even the lehigh valley by 8:00 a.m. 40s in philadelphia points south, 38 in allentown so it's already all rain. stay snow in the poconos until midday and this winds down pretty quickly after 1:00 we'll clear it out and you may be dealing with some sun for the first part of your afternoon commute. here's what to expect. 2-4 inches in the pocono region, 1-2 inches in the lehigh valley, a wintry mix, mainly rain to the

south. my gut says we're on the lower end of this. so overnight we'll see that snow and rain arriving by day break. it should come in around 7:00 a.m. or so, maybe a little bit sooner than that. we'll fast forward to the mummers parade. we've been talking about this and it looks like great weather for the new year's day. the holiday weather is rejed into two not so great early patterns. the weekend is sunny, seasonable and pretty dry so that's good news. >> we can't be picky. >> we'll take it. >> don joins us next with sports. >> a whole lot of things going on tonight. carson claus, villanova showing heart and the flyers tied after
