rahel. happy new year to you too. i'm here with the pence port string band and i'm in the closet, the suit closet, with all of the bling, all of the feathers, all of the coolness that helped make mummers day parade, the mummers day parade , right. i'm here with rich, i'm here bob, bob and rich, and they are long time members of the pence port string band and for people and rahel we were going back and forth on twitter. so i put it up, to bob, to explain to the world for folks like myself who are transplant don't understand mummers to break it down for us. >> i will dot best i can. it is a little bit mardi gras, it the is a lot of family, it goes back to colonial times. people used to run around, and shooting off guns, and, it was just fun, and back in the 1900 city organize it in the parade basically to keep people from running other peoples houses. >> reporter: so this is what they do, big part of it, of

course is outfit, the gear, that they wear. i'm kind of warm under here. you are the man, assistant man to put together the strut. you have been practicing for months. what makes this year different from years past. >> we have a different music arranger, music is more different then what we're used to playing. it is a little bit more difficult to portray, dancing, movements are more than then we're used to doing. >> reporter: let's look at the shirt, tiki island i'm very intrigued. >> it will be like a polynesian but an island theme , where tiki will be coming to life, and we have a lot of natives and a lot of band movement and just a lot

reporting from penns landing, alexandria hoff for cbs-3 "eyewitness news". well, an estimated 2 million people crowded in new york city is times square to bid farewell to 2016 and welcome in the new year. wendy gilette was also there. >> reporter: confetti rained done on revel hours rang in 2017 in times square. >> you brought the a baby up in here. >> yes, came all the was from south africa. so we could not let them stay at home. >> reporter: country's biggest party came up with stepped up security, 7,000 police officers, uniformed, under cover and bomb sniffing dogs patrolled the area. >> police are every where. security is great. the it just seems like it is alling together well taken care of. i feel great. >> reporter: police also watched from the skies, to make sure that the massive crowd welcomed the new year without incident: as many as 2 million people packed into

times square and some waiting for 12, almost 24 hours, to watch the ball tropical. those waiting for midnight were caroled in pence without access to bathroom facility. >> it took a lot of endurance. it did. it really to. >> reporter: how did you handle not having bathrooms. >> i didn't eat or drink. >> reporter: for many ringing in the new year in times square was a once in a lifetime screens. >> it was on my bucket list. >> reporter: just minutes in the new year a army of new york city sanitation workers descended on times square to clean up tons of confetti and trash that the partyers left behind. wendy gel let for cbs-3 "eyewitness news". in turkey year began with the deadly attack on a nightclub in istanbul. a gunman dressed as santa claus walk in the club during new years celebration and opened fire. at least 39 people are dead, and 70 others are wounded, and they call the shooting a terror attack but in one has claimed responsibility.

police are investigating a fatal shooting in philadelphia authorities responded to richmond and east venango streets. victim was pronounced dead at the scene. there is in word of a suspect. and just about 30 minutes later after 3:00 police responded to a fatal shooting in north philadelphia man was shot in the chest in the 1900 block of west willard street, in word on a suspect. authorities are also investigating a stabbing in philadelphia, police responded to the scene just after 11:30, on the 3900 block of roosevelt boulevard, and one woman was stabbed in the chest and other had minor injuries, police say that the suspect is men, to the victims. and new this morning, it is a deadly start to the new year in philadelphia as we have been saying police are investigating a fatal accident in the fernrock section of the city, police say a 71 year-old man was struck and killed by a white sedan, around 1:40 this morning in the 1200 block of west chew avenue, that is near marvine street. the victim died at the scene. investigators say the driver

of that sedan was found three blocks away where he crashed into a fence, the driver a 25 year-old man was taken to the hospital, in stable condition, and, police say he will be charged with leaving the scene of the fatal accident. also new this morning police say a person was struck and killed by a trenton regional rail train near the holmesberg junction this happened around 1:55 this morning on the tracks near state road and ashburner street. unidentified victim tied at the scene. accident forced septa to cancel a special late night trains for new years eve. and there is much more to come on "eyewitness news", a power company find malwear on a computer, where investigators think it came from and whether they think the the company was a target. and some unusual, advice from president-elect trump for people who are extra security conscious. and 2017, gets off to a mild start, justin drabick is giving us his forecast just minutes

recovery efforts are supposed to begin for a small plane that vanished off of lake erie. twin engine plane carrying six people disappeared shortly after take off thursday night from lake shore airport. on friday coastguard suspended its search for plane after finding nothing. two small planes collided midair near mckenney, texas killing three people this collision happened saturday engineer arrow county airport about 35 miles north of downtown dallas. faa says that both aircraft were flying under visual flight rules and not in contact with air traffic control at the time of the crash. several states are asking cyber security experts to reexamine state and utility

networks, this follows a discovery of malwear allegedly tied to russian hackers on a vermont power company's lap top computer but as rose gomez reports, the power grid wasn't compromised. >> reporter: over 20,000 vermonters received power from the burlington electric department and officials say that none of their customers data was compromised after a malice a software was discover on a employee's lap top. >> something that we take extremely seriously and, our utility, we're largest, in the u.s., takes cyber security very seriously. we will continue to do that. ultimately we want to ensure reliability of our grid and protection of our customer data. >> reporter: he says that a company lap top was found with the type of mal wear that the u.s. department of home land security has associated with russian hackers. they disconnected it from the network and alerted authorities. >> this computer, was in the

connected to the grid control system. the it was not breached or penetrated. we have no indication, of compromise of our electric grid systems or any customer information. >> reporter: governor elect bill scott release aid statement saying that the the utility is working closely with federal officials to trace this malwear and state public safety officials will continue to coordinate with our federal partners. he says that the lap top was used by one employee for business purposes, although it is still under investigation that they believe the malwear came there a web site the employee visited. burlington electric does in the the know what the intent of the malwear was but they do know they weren't the only ones affect. they say authorities tell them there is no indication that burlington electric was specifically targeted. >> cyber security is an issue that effect as lot of industries, it effects health care, obviously it is a tech ing the utilities industry here and also commerce, but my sense of things here this

burlington is that the leaders in the utility community here this burlington have this well under control. >> reporter: burlington electric officials say federal officials found this type of internet traffic, elsewhere in the country, and that they have in indication that the utility industry has been targeted, in anyway. rose gomez, burlington. well, despite all of his tweeting president-elect trump says he rarely uses e-mail or computers. the last night hosting his new years eve party at his palm beaches state the president-elect says if people are really security conscious in certain hatters don't go high tech. >> if you have something really important, write it the out and have it delivered by courier, the old tags way because i'll tell you what, no computer is safe. >> by the way mr. trump has been reluctant to accept allegations by u.s. intelligent agencies that russia tried to influence the presidential election through hacking. lets get a check of weather and traffic. a lot of people waking up late

coming at 4:47, later and later by february 1st, it will be setting at 5:20. march 1st 5:53. and before we get the daylight savings time. we are gaining just over 30 seconds of daylight another week or so we will gain a minute of daylight each day as we head toward spring season. thirty-nine in allentown 356789 in reading. thirty-three mount pocono. nothing cold, chilly, we are heading outside wear the winter coat but the cold air is still well to the north and west, upper great lakes, northern plains, 24 in minneapolis. twenty's in des moines. that cold air just stays out to the west for next several days and does not get in our region until later on wednesday night and then certainly by the end of the week we will talk bit, nice and dry, storm scan three, a little weak cold front coming through. not a lot of moisture. just some cloud rolling through right now, we do have some rain well to the south, tories a couple storm system that will roll northward over the next 48 hours. that puts a couple of round of rain in the forecast, because we could use rain. it has been dry past few months. monday morning, if you are heading back to work, rain will arrive, probably around

day break. should not be anything too heavy but we have to watch far northwestern suburbs lehigh valley and poconos we could have light freezing rain with temperatures right around freezing. rainfall amounts on monday, maybe a tenth or a quarter inch. temperatures climbing in the 40's. another round of rain arrives on tuesday. and so lets time things out, today, lot of sunshine throughout the afternoon, cloud start to move in overnight the tonight, 8:00 o'clock tomorrow morning we will see that rain breaking out from the city on south. notice pink that is that freezing rain berks county, lehigh valley, it is rain coming in earlier that freezing rain could be extended further south, and then warmer air starts to move in. everybody just sees some light rain, off and on through the day on monday. we will get a break monday night and then tuesday morning again we will see our next round of rain returning. temperatures wise, getting close 50, around the city, on south, even on the coast, around 50 degrees, this afternoon. tonight, it is chilly, we have to watch the suburbs, close to freezing tomorrow morning, and that is why there is potential for freezing drizzle and then in the afternoon, back to the mid 40's. cooler then today just because

weather cooperating. we have a beautiful sunrise, in just a few minutes, clear skies, lot of sun will get us near 50 this afternoon. already, yeah, 12 degrees warmer in allentown. 19 degrees warmer in millville compared to this time yesterday. out early yesterday morning you are scraping frost off of your car. that is not happening today. temperatures right around 40 degrees. we have had cloud around, wind is still up, and keeping that cold air from settling in down at the surface, but that wind will relax through the morning , you can see storm scan three nice and quiet, some of the thin cloud, thin ning out. traveling today, looks great, sun and cloud, battling sun glare, goes downhill tomorrow, and tuesday we will talk about some rain but that mummers parade forecast looking good, lower 40's at 9:00 by noon time upper 40's on our way up to 50 for philadelphia don't get used to these 50's. big time cold spell coming later in the week. i will show you that seven day in a few more minutes. rahel, back over to you. >> we will see you soon.

>> all right. for more than 100 years new years take in philadelphia has meant one thing, the mummers parade. cherri gregg from our sister station kyw news radio is live from south philadelphia with one string band getting ready to strut their stuff. at least somebody is strutting their stuff, cherri, good morning, what is going on out there. >> reporter: that is right, good morning, rahel, happy new year, yes, there will be a lot of strutting going on and as you can see here at pence port spring band headquarters in south philadelphia, there is lots of muscles going on here. the excuse me. they are getting ready. they are ready to present their tiki island theme strut today, and right now there is a lot going on and in addition to all of the bling that you will see, right, it takes a lot of work including make up, all right. and then these guys and girls over here are getting all bronze and tanned up because they are going to hit south broad street, but kim davis is the woman behind the facial designs that you will see,

good morning, kim. >> good morning. beautiful morning. >> reporter: you have been working, bringing these folks in, tell me what is the design , what went into this because it took months to put this together. >> our team has traveled, to the more or less tattoos type of design as we come through. so we're work ago lot of inn corporations with stripes, tattooish type looks. we have stations set up. we get air brush, everybody has different details depending on than what their costume and what their look is for the day. we have people set up and making that happen. >> reporter: so, my photographer is showing how intricate it is. they have an air brush machine , they are air brushing on bronze make up, yes, so you guys, drew out schematics and to research. >> we do it in pencil, set it up, we are trying to match the costumes because those bright colors we want to mum it up,

make it more fancy. we have a lieutenant of bright colors to step it up, and so we go back in and hand paint everything in, and what our ideas are. everybody is doing different colors based on what the design is coming there. >> let me just point out, this band, pence port string band doesn't perform until just before 2:00 but they will start to arrive around 5:30 this morning because it takes a lot of work. the as you can see look at these outfits. they have on, he has a palm grass skirt here and there is all sorts of different outfits and they are warm, so they have skin flesh colored uniforms underneath, all of this to make sure that they stay warm strutting their stuff down south broad street. the parade begins just after 9:00 o'clock this morning. and then they will be performing just before 2:00 o'clock all part of the philadelphia tradition and more than 100 years old, and i cannot wait to see it happen,

kids in bed early and another fire works display when the clock struck midnight. from philadelphia to the poconos, this was the scene at jack frost big boulder in carbon county. the that is cool. skiers participated in the torch light parade. they took a break from the slopes to take in some new years eve fire works. and always a big celebration here, of course, millions of people pack new york's times square to ring in 2017, they watched waterford crystal ball drop to signal start of the new year in america. there were no specific credible terror threats against new york city times square, but police say they were prepared, security included lining the street the celebration with sanitation trucks filled with sand to prevent anymore attempts to drive-in to clouds. >> russians celebrated the start with the fire works show over red square, and a warning from russian president

>> i don't know, i saw one person, shooting. >> reporter: club overlooks the river, and turkish media reported many party goers, left the water to escape. the city's governor called it a terror attack just three weeks ago, 44 were killed in twin blasts outside istanbul soccer match. early sunday morning police cordond off a large section of the city of 14 million, even before the attack, authorities deployed at least 17,000 police officers, amid security concerns. brooks silva-braga for cbs-3 "eyewitness news". and a manhunt for a suspect in the fatal shooting of a pennsylvania state trooper end with his death. state police say jason robinson was shot and killed during an encounter at a mobile home in central pennsylvania. robinson was wanted in friday 's fatal shooting of state trooper london weaver. he was gunned down as he responded to a domestic incident in huntingdon county. >> they encountered the murder suspect in a nearby location,

and when confronted by troopers the armed suspect failed to obey command and made a threat toward the troopers. faced with the deadly situation troopers were forced to discharge their weapons resulting in the suspect being fatally wounded. >> trooper weaver joined the pennsylvania state police in 2015, he is the 97th member to be killed in the line of duty. meantime, community members mourned loss of the fallen new jersey state trooper bill theron. the this is "eyewitness news" of the video in north arlington, new jersey. he was diagnosis with the brain tumor attributed to working at ground zero during aftermath of 9/11. trooper theron served 22 years with the new jersey state police. philadelphia police are investigating the attack on a deliver would i man in east germantown. investigators say woman told them she was driving on washington lane near chew avenue yesterday evening when a man wearing a black hooded sweat shirt and jeans jumped in. woman says he forced her to drive to another location where she told police he raped her.

new year means higher gas prices for pennsylvania drivers. today gas tax in the keystone state is jumping eight cents to about 78 cents per gallon. tax revenue paid for road construction and maintenance. the latest figures from triple a shows drivers are pagan average of 2.51 cents for a gallon of regular in the philadelphia area. philadelphia's new soda tax will also start today, first of the kind in the major american city. that means you'll pay 1.5 cents per ounce for sugary drinks. mayor jim kenney says tax will fund prek. last month philadelphia common pleas court judge upheld tax, however, beverage industry does say that they plan to appeal the ruling. right now justin joins us now checking with the weather watchers.

they can turn a new page this year. >> it is time. >> and our dog today is my talk marvin who you may remember i adopted from the show a couple of months ago. he now has fallen in love like everybody else with rahel. i will to have fight back. >> it is a love affair. >> he is so sweet. >> he is one of the many dogs at any shelter that is overlooked because people walk by because you look at him and get okay, just another black dog, you know, they may in the the show well in the cage. they hey bounce against the cage or lean this is back or they don't come forward but when you can isolate them out, that is when their personality comes out. and that is what has happened with this dog. marvin was turn back a million times. look at how sweet he is. he sees himself new. >> yes. >> he is as smart as a whip. people just walk past, so, let me show you we have a whole bunch, i want you had to really, i know aren't they sweet. this is trouble with this

buster does in the like other dogs too much. rescued from cruelty. pepper also in the too much of the fan of other dog but sweet , loves to cuddle with you, and eye are wrist very quirky but in a good way. been there since 2014. lieutenant of friend at the shelter. this is patches. he has been very successfully in homes and need to get back to one and buster is, just super friendly, likes to play, take naps, been there since september. the just a wonderful, wonderful dog. so they have all been looking for their holiday homes. they have all been looking for just a lifetime home. again, i cannot under score, every single day i say i cannot believe that somebody, so many people, he was there for a month. he was, at other shelters for months. he has been turned back and forth. my dog marvin right here phenomenal. when i have past his cage, very possibly because you have to stop and think, you know what i will give this
