this is cbs-3 "eyewitness news" this morning. developing right now, two men force their way into a local home. but did not expect the homeowner to be ready for them. what happened next that left one suspect dead and the second on a run. destruction in the south. severe weather causes flooding and power outages across several states. that storm left four people dead. >> and the stubborn fire crews spent almost eight hours on the scene after warehouse fire that sparked power outages. we'll tell you about the number of customers affected. today is tuesday, january 3rd, good morning, i'm jim donovan. >> i'm rahel solomon. the airport glitch that caused chaos on one of the busiest travel days of the year. first, we check with your travel forecast with katie fehlinger. >> a lot of clouds and some

fog issues out there. not quite as rainy as it will be later on. here's my vision, take the umbrella with you. two days in a row. today actually looks like we will see the sog yes, sir conditions. generally late morning, early afternoon specially, but storm scan, yes, doesn't look all that bad. do you have a loft cloud cover out there. again, some foggy concerns, across the region this morning, so, you know, especially traveling across the area bridges, when you're higher up and above the water beds there, can lead to poor visibility. mainly into the midday, that we will end up with sog yes, sir conditions here. what can you expect? there will be drizzle around early on, steadiest rain comes late morning, generally at the typical morning rush, winding down, which is good, since so many of us are going back to work, back to school today. then up until about the time the kids are getting back out of school. still going to be wet for the p.m. drive. and it does look like we are going to start to clear out through the overnight. beyond that point it, does get little quieter at least for awhile. but for now, the temperatures are above freezing, for the most part across the board,

mount pocono only spot where you are not, but we don't have much weather to speak or wet weather rather to speak of right now. don't have to worry about any freezing issues like we had yesterday. 429 temperature at palmyra, simply too warm, even if there were wet weather around, in a widespread fashion to lead to any icing, as the day progresses, both at the shore, low to mid 50's, well above the seasonable conditions for what we would expect to say. but rain is on the way. so again, rahel, you know, it will be something that slows us down with time. but at least we will see the worse of it after the typical morning rush. >> okay, some good news, thank you. let's start now with the vine st. expressway. live look this morning, near 76. we can tell you that the road was open over night. but will shut down tonight, between 11 p.m. and 5:00 a.m. for normal construction. we do have an accident we want to tell you about. this is on orvilla road, lansdale, montgomery county this morning. the road is closed at the i am section of weikel road and welsh rd. no word on any injuries, but

you can use 40-foot road as alternate. now, very quick lip, also to tell you about downed tree, at the intersection of del chester road and stackhouse mill road. this is willis town, chester county. one lane blocked in the area. we'll keep you updated and let you know when the tree is removed. in other news, terrifying home invasion over night in philadelphia's frankford section, homeowner badly wounded. >> trang do live at the scene at pratt street where police are still looking for a second suspect. good morning, trang. >> reporter: good morning, jim, rahel. just a lot to sort through here. police have the street still taped off, they continue to gather evidence in this case. but take a look, this house is just right beyond where you see that police suv. and police say a man had just returned home with his wife and four daughters last night, when there was knock at the door. soon there was birrage of bullets inside the home leaving one suspect dead and the homeowner hurt. fortunately the wife and their four little girls who were all inside at the time are okay. now this happened on the 1900

block of pratt street in frankford. just before 11:00 p.m. officers responding to report of a shooting. found the 27 year old home owner with gunshot wounds to the mouth and leg. they returned him to hahnemann hospital. officers also found a second man inside the home by the front door. he had been shot in the head. and was pronounced dead at the scene. now chief inspector scott small say the man killed one of two men who forced their way inside the home, struggled with the homeowner, shot him, and then the homeowner fired back. again, all of this happening while the man's wife and four daughters ages four, three, one and five months, were upstairs getting ready for bed. >> preliminary information is that this was a home invasion robbery, where the perpetrators were met by the 27 year old homeowner, who had a gun on his own. so one of the perpetrators at least one of the perpetrated ers fired a shot, striking homeowner. homeowner returned fire, striking and killing one of the perpetrators. >> and as detective gather

evidence here, on pratt street, the home owner is in serious condition at hahnemann hospital. now, police are still look being for that second suspect who ran off. they have very vague description. but they say there are several surveillance cameras on the block that can help them id that man. for now live in frankford, trang do, cbs-3, "eyewitness news", jim, rahel, back to you. >> hopefully that helps, trang, thank you. in other news, stubborn warehouse fire north philadelphia leaves 50 peco customers in the dark. low hanging wires were sparking on the 4300 block of north third street. the fire broke out around 7:00 last night, and firefighters remained on the scene throughout the night. more than ten homes were evacuated as crews fought the flames. peco has restored power to anyone who lost. good news, no injuries have been reported. >> well, he was the only american injured in the turkey night club attack. now the delaware resident is finally back home in our area. jake raak returned home last night slipping through back exit at philadelphia

international airport. raak says he played dead after he was shot in the leg during a new years celebration in turkey. isis has claimed responsibility fosh the terror attack that killed 39 people. well international manhunt for the gunman is underway. down south now, fierce storms being blamed for causing tree to topple on mobile home in rehoboth alabama. four people inside were killed. there is also flood being and power outages. take a look. this is what it looks like at the alabama golf coast zoo after heavy rains and strong winds battered the property yesterday. trees toppled over, while cages and structures were tossed from habitats. part of the lighthouse was crushed, but that lion okay. powerful storms and possible tornado ripped through mississippi yesterday afternoon. power outages were reported across the state, as strong winds, uprooted trees, and damaged homes in mount olive. that's the town about 50 miles southeast of jackson. heavy rain also caused roads to flood. no injuries or deaths have been reported. back here at home, police and f.b.i. are hoping you can

help them track down two serial bank rob remembers. caught inside td bank east put letter street in port richmond yesterday afternoon. the men are also believed to be responsible forearmed robberies at two other philadelphia banks and even one in upper darby. of course if you recognize these suspect, call police right away. >> take a look at this video, bensalem police say the maroon pick up you see hit cyclist, then drove off. the crash happened around 9:30, sunday morning on tennis avenue near state road. the victim suffered serious injuries. the chevy pick up, police are looking for, is miss ago passenger side mirror. and has damage to the passenger side door. police are also investigating a fatal accident in montgomery county involving a car and a pedestrian. officers say a person was hit on ridge pike near northwestern avenue about 7:30 last night, nearby roads closed while the accident was investigated. the victim was pronounced dead at the scene. the driver involved in the accident is cooperating with police. police have not yet identified

the victim. well the man accused of killing his he estranged wife in her cumberland county home last month is being held on $1 million bail. thirty-two year old jeremiah menel arrested off route 54 in fowl son. police had been looking for him since december 19th. that's when tara owe shea watson was found murdered in commercial township. police say a preliminary investigation determined moanel. >> takes the oath of office as mayor, council president, and jones potter becomes city treasurer. city council members, seven newly elect the, will also be sworn in. ceremony kicks off tonight at council meeting at 8:00 at the grand on market street. >> the rose bowl ended with a heart breaking lost for penn state. >> the nittany lions were tied with usc late in the fourth quarter then quarterback trace mc sorely makes a thrown, tone have trojan defensive back leon intercept it.

welcome back, clean slate on capitol hill, the 115th congress will be sworn in today. yesterday house republicans voted behind closed doors to gut the office of congressional ethics. now, that's the independent bod that i is investigating alleged misconduct by lawmakers. the gop continues to dominate both the house and senate. they'll tackle obamacare and i am graduation, the senate will hold hearings on president-elect trump's cabinet picks. well, us customs is investigating a systems outage that created outrage for people trying to get back into the country. multiple us airports started experiencing outages at about 5:00 last night, just as thousands of people were returning home following the

holidays. some passengers claim they weren't even told what was causing the long wait. one traveler in miami called the situation despicable. >> it was insane. our global entry pass is denied, had a big x on it. they proceeded. it was like a line after thousand people or more. and it was absolutely despicable. coming from mexico, back in the united state, we just wanted to get home. they wouldn't let us. >> now, back up and running by about 9:00 last night. customs has not roy least add cause for the outage. but it doesn't expect any malicious activity. >> 2016 was the warmest year on record in the state of alaska, they say the warming trends likely to continue in 2017. anchorage, temperatures were average of 4 degrees warmer than usual last year. in other areas, the difference was as much as 7 degrees. how some families say they seem tone joy, but the increase temperatures, they have an impact on things like the arctic ice pack,

you can see snow across the canadian border outside of minnisota that's part of cold front that's going to be sweeping through here, ushering in the arctic air reinforcement. so by the time we hit late week, we start to see the temperature dropping off pretty substantially. so we have a lot of ups and downs in this forecast, with that said, here's future weather i promised you, again, nothing more than few speckles on the radar until we hit 9:00, 10:00 a.m. look at this, bright colors of the yellow, orange, red that show up here. there will be good soaking that rolls its way through here. we will be on the air at "eyewitness news" at noon i think with just completely lit up radar to show you here. soap, again, come noontime, even early or late morning, rather, there will be some soaking rain, working its way through, and into the second half of the days, as well, then all lift out of here, should start to clear out on the overnight, left over pocket of rain here and there, but leading into wednesday just left over mix every clouds with some sunshine. still pretty pleasant before the arctic air reaches us. the high hit 50 degrees,

what's the mood on wall street? >> well, the markets open after the holiday. they ended the year with actually their first down week in about two months, overall, 2016 was very good for stocks. the dow gained about 13%. and there is a feeling of optimism that donald trump's presidency will mean lower corporate taxes, and less regulation. jim, rahel? >> so, jill, i understands that britain's largest supermarket chain is stopping so-called sexist pricing. what can you tell us about that? >> well there is comes after widespread criticism. the british retailer testco will now charge the same price foremen's and women's raisers. the female version costs twice as much. the store says it was because of the men's raisers were sold at greater volume. now, both will be about a dollar 25 for a pack of five. last year, newspaper investigation found that women were charged on average 37% more for clothing and other goods in the uk.

here. pleasant, fun music to pep you up here, so many of us are headed back to work and school this morning from a nice long extended holiday break. but we are expecting the beginning of just getting back into reality here, to be a little bit after tricky situation for you out there today. as we've got some steady rain, that's on the way for our area, through the course of the morning. and specially the afternoon, storm scan at the moment is relatively quiet. definitely damp out there. you will see fine drizzle, certainly some fog. the current visibilities, not horrible, they're not ideal. kind of depending where you are, specially up near places like the lehigh valley where we just showed you the camera shot, or the mount pocono area, you're under anywhere from two to down to mile visibility here. so, again, it is not horrible. but it is not what you hope for. would you rather have 10-mile visibility region wide. soap, this is going to be one of those mornings that specially if you travel near the river beds, into the valley regions, may end up with fog issues, again may need to flick the windshield wiper once, twice, but

>> live from the cbs broadcast center in philadelphia. this is cbs-3 "eyewitness news" this morning. well, we continue to follow a developing story this morning, a struggle breaks out during a overnight home invasion, right now the home owner is in the hospital and one suspect is dead. we'll tell you who else was inside when the bullets went flying. >> we are also following a developing story down south, where at least four people have been killed and severe storms. an update and show you the frantic efforts to rescue zoo animals. and penn state coach james franklin consults his family on the field after the team's heart breaking lost in the rose bowl. our don bell is the only local reporter in pasadena. >> well, today is tuesday, january 3rd, good morning, i'm jim donovan. >> i'm rahel solomon.
