katie is keeping an eye keepingn things. katie of course the penn state fan. >> you know, it was an awesome game. so well played. >> great effort. >> it was such a cinderella story from the get go. i feel like we couldn't have asked for more. they did such a great job. it was a great game to watch. absolutely. well, i have to bring this party down and tell you about some nasty weather today. it is not terrible at the moment. we don't have the best visibility out there right now. but it is about to get a little bit worse. soap, you know, storm scan may look relatively innocent, just a lot of clouds, you do have some poor visibility here and there like i mentioned. let me zoom it out one time. yes, you got a swat of some pretty soaking rain, working it way right now toward the nation's capitol, eventually reaching us, and bringing with it a swat of soaking rain, that's going to last us for the majority of the midday. so, i would walk out the door with a umbrella. you will be absolutely thanking yourself, specially if you got to be out during the midday, maybe going to lunch meeting, something like, that you will need it. forty-one the current temperature at the airport, 37

allentown. still cold enough to support icing in the poconos. but, you don't have the precipitation up there. so the temperatures will rise well enough, that we don't have to worry about any icing here today. yesterday, different story. today, too mild everywhere for that. but the rain and drizzle is the story. 53 degrees at the shore here. yes, periods of rain are the story region wide. so up in the mountains, too, other than fog, dealing with rain, and it is going to be a soggy afternoon. look, time this out little bit more in detail just a little bit more in the show. >> thank you, see you then. couple of accidents to tell you about. this one on the pa turnpike northeast extension, northbound, between mid-county and lansdale. now, vehicle struck a barrier blocking the right lane, working to go learn if anyone was hurt. downed tree at the intersection every del chester road and stackhouse mill road in willis town chester county. one lane block in that area. also, construction blocking two lanes, of i495 northbound at route 13, dupont highway, wilmington, delaware, we'll let you know when that clears. >> well, developing right now,

local father is shot during a terrifying home invasion, but he also had a gun and fired back. >> all of this happened while his wife and four young daughters were in their frankford home. "eyewitness news" reporter trang do live on pratt street. good morning, trang. >> reporter: well, good morning, rahel, jim. yep, police just cleared the scene, moments ago, and right now they're not exactly sure why this family was target the. they say it appears to have been an attempted robbery. though the homeowner was shot twice, his wife and four little girls are okay. terrifying moment for a family of six in the city's frankford section. a gun battle right in their own living room. leaving the father of four little girls seriously hurt. >> preliminary information is that this was a home invasion robbery, where the perpetrators were met by the 27 year old homeowner, who had a gun on his own. >> police say the family just returned home to the 1900 block of pratt street around 11:00 monday night. there was a knock on the door,

and two men forced their way in. >> there was a struggle between the 27 year old homeowner, and these two males. and one of the perpetrators did shoot the homeowner two times, in his mouth and his leg. >> chief inspect store scott small says the homeowner then returned fire, fatally shooting one of the men in the head. the other ran off. this violence unfolding while the man's wife and four young daughters, ages four, three, one, and five months, were upstairs, getting ready for bed. >> we're still very fortunate that his wife, nor any of his four children, were struck by gunfire, or injured, in anyway. >> and police are still looking for that second suspect. they hope several surveillance cameras on this block will help them id that person. meanwhile, that father is in serious condition, at hahnemann hospital. but for now, liver in frankford, i'm trang do, cbs-3, "eyewitness news", jim, rahel, back to you. >> thank you, trang for that update. well the two week long manhunt for south jersey

murder suspect, jeremiah monel was over. he was arrested yesterday after into a wooded area folsome county, on the run since his estranged wife was found murdered in her home last month. he is being held on $1 million bail. in other news this morning, fatal car accident in montgomery county. the unidentified victim pronounced dead on the scene after being hit on ridge pike near northwestern avenue in springfield township. that was about 7:30 last night. nearby roads were closed while the accident was being investigated. the driver involved in that accident is cooperating with police. meanwhile, bensalem police believe this truck hit a cyclist and then drove off. this crash happened around 9:30, in the morning, on tennis avenue near state road. cyclist suffered serious injuries. police are now looking for a maroon chevy pick up. it is miss ago passenger side mirror. it has damage to the passenger side door. >> dozens of peco customers have power back after long lasting warehouse fire in

north philadelphia. "eyewitness news" captured low hanging wires, you see here, packing, this is on the 4300 block of north third street. fire started around 7:00 last night, and firefighters remained on the scene past midnight. peco has temporarily shut off service to 50 customers due to the fire. fortunately, no one was hurt. >> authorities in burlington county new jersey continue to search foreman seen driving around naked. he has been spotted twice in medford where he gets out of his black jeep patriots, gets back inside. police say he ran toward some teenage girls last month on westerly drive in evesham. he is described as a heavyset white male. well, severe weather batters the south with heavy rain, flashfloods, and power outages, in texas, mississippi, georgia, and florida. >> off initials alabama say four people died after storms caused a tree to fall on their home in rehoboth. cbs news correspondent hena daniels with the latest from new york. >> a string every violent storms are sweeping through the south. bringing heavy rain and

flashflooding. making roads treacherous. and bringing down trees and power lines. in southeast alabama, four people were killed monday night, when a tree fell on their mobile home. the national weather service says more than dozen tornado sitings have been reported. in georgia, alabama, and mississippi. >> like a tin can, just ripped it off. >> jill cannon inside her soon to open flower shop in alabama, when the massive storm moved through. >> we were kind of watching, and then all the sudden it was just on top of us, just that fast, the whole building shook. >> animals had to be rescued from the alabama golf coast zoo. >> the cages were blown, into the ponds, and they were in the water until we could get to them. >> the severe weather threat remains through parts of alabama, georgia, and florida through the morning. hena daniels, for cbs-3, "eyewitness news". well, it is not a happy day in happy valley. >> no it is not. penn state came up short in the rose bowl. good effort though.

third quarter, through for 7 yards touchdown. penn state ahead, 49 to 35. but the trojans came back to tie it in the fourth quarter. time expired. matt broke the tie with the 46-yard field goal. and penn state season ends with a lost to usc, 52 to 49. >> the rose bowl was also nail biter for penn state alumni. members of the delaware county alumni chapter held rose bowl watch party at meg i owe kneel's in drexel hill there. were cheers every time the nittany lions scored, the ending obviously was not what they had expected. >> it is in, you know, you start there as a freshman, you just kind of get the spirit going. it doesn't stop. it is alum, you stay active, just keep enjoying it. >> regardless of the final score, penn state alum say it was still a great season for the nittany lions. well, if you thought it was tough to watch from your neighborhood bar, just imagine being at the game. >> sports director don bell saw it all first-hand in

pasadena california. >> obviously difficult g lost for the penn state thinks any lions. behind me you can see the sc trojans celebrating their rose bowl championship just after this game came to an end, i had a chance to talk to the lions star running back, barkley. how proud are you of the guys, what you guys did here today? >> so proud. they showed so much heart. just tough to lose, obviously, especially in a game like. >> this but got a lot of work to do. we're a young team. looking forwards to the off season to get better. we have heart. we're fighters. we don't quit. no matter what, how many points we're down by, we're able to continue to fight and trust each other and believe each other. like i said, we still got a lot to go. >> as a leader on this team what will you tell your guys when you get back there to the lockerroom. >> tell them i love them. played their hearts out, heck of a game, just motivation in the off season where we got to continue and build on it. >> the agony of defeat was

>> back on "eyewitness news", four children are dead, six people in a hospital, after hazmat incident in a mobile home in amarillo, texas, the children who died range in age from seven to 17. investigators say someone sprayed water on previously applied pesticide to the home. combination produced toxic gas. father and mother are now in inch ten i have cara long with four other children. >> convicted killer dillan roof can rep himself tomorrow when a jury decides if he can

get the death penalty or life in press o judge decides he is mentally competent, but cannot approach witnesses, the jury or the families members of his victim. roof of course convicted of murdering nine people inside african-american church in charleston, south caroline in june 2015. >> mass i have forest fire destroyed coming ends every home, in chile. thick gray smoke filled the streets in the village of laguna, where the blaze struck yesterday, electrical service providers say they had to cut power to nearly 48,000 customers as a precaution. the fire also prompted to evacuate hundreds of people. more snow is exactly what residents in north dakota don't need. this is the fourth major storm to hit the state this winter. right now, fargo is under a no travel advisory, after 9 inches of snow fell. another 4 inches are expected this morning, windchills there in the negative teens. i've been to fargo. >> have you? >> it is in the wintertime oh,

somebody stole the skyscrapers. those clouds have really dropped low here. and as a result, you have got some fog, and if you perhaps go into the office early, you will probably not see much out of the higher levels. meanwhile, we take a look at storm scan3, as this latest disturbance pushes our way. moving right now with the leading edge through the virginia aps, making its arrival here. i would say, by around 9:00, or so, so as the typical morning rush is winding down, which is helpful, but we are also going to eventually see another blast of arctic cold. just talking about that snow in north dakota little pocket of the snow has since migrated to the northeast here, but it is indicative of the next cold front that's going to wait in the wings and bring us our next blast of cold later this week. so, with that next approaching cold front, you know, not talking about anything super drastic, five to 10 degrees below the seasonable average, tail end of the week, that's tolerable, but in perception, or perception sake, coming off of days in the 50's, at best be in the 30's by the end of

the week here. back it up, talk it about what the rest of today has up its sleeve. see good soak, some will flirt upward of eight, .10-inch. good soaking for the day, comes between nine, maybe as late as toward 5:00. looks like it might be little bit of more expanded window than we originally anticipated. so into the early p.m. commute could still be kind of dicey out there. but nor now, areas of fog, drizzle, are the theme. then it is just wet into the p.m. drive with ponding and roads, spray and steady rain to contend with, umbrellas are required here today, folks. forty-six the current temperature in ac. do you have it a pretty decent breeze out there, that will continue throughout the day. but the make gist is that it will be mainly wet through the middle part of the day. not as bad right now, not as bad later tonight as skies begin to gradually clear. we will drop down to 43 degrees. now, behind this next arctic cold front, take a look. thursday, friday, saturday, sunday, and even monday, we can't break out of the 30's,

and friday, rahel, we may even end up with a light dusting, of snow. >> katie, thank you. >> let's move along now, look at some of the newspaper headlines from across our region. >> from the delaware county daily times a man found shot and killed in chester is the first homicide victim of 2017 in delaware county. the unidentified 24 year old was found unresponsive yesterday morning in the drivers seat of a car near the intersection of 22nd and howard. >> and the press of atlantic city egg harbor township mayor james sunny mccullough sworn into new term yesterday. during the township's annual reorganization meeting. that's mccullough's 21st consecutive year, has served as mayor of 27 for his 31 years in public office. >> nor the news journal, delaware superior court judge has upheld a ban on caring firearms in state parks and

>> someone has some explaining to do after baggage hands letter was locked with luggage on flight from charlotte to washington, dc area. united airlines confirms the baggage loader at charlotte douglas airport turned up in the cargo hold of united express flight that landed in dullos airport in northern virginia. now, amaze inning lip, he's okay, considering the one hour flight reached 27,000 feet.

and the cargo hold on those planes are normally heated, so quite cold up there. >> well, pilot getting ready to fly a boeing 737 from calgary never made it to take off. police say the sun wing airlines gate crew noticed he was drunk, and co-pilot found him actually passed out in the cockpit. authorities say the pilot as blood alcohol level was three times the legal limit. he's charged with having control of an aircraft while being impaired. the flight took off with a different pilot. >> and speaking of flying, thousands of travelers trying don't err the country are stopped short after us customs experiences computer outage monday afternoon. popular flight hub from boston to fort lauderdale suffered hour long delays. >> i would say hour and a half to get through. >> almost four hours, yes. >> international travelers in for the later dale and boston among thousands of waiting through a sea of fellow passengers a mid massive lines at airports nationwide. >> we probably waited in line an hour, but we were in a quick line.

we got to customs, we were told that the computers were down. >> computer systems were down, across the country, customs and border protection, blaming computer outage that it says affected processing systems, leaving various airports clocked with disgruntled holiday travelers on one of the busiest travel days of the year. while scrambling to fix the problem, the agency says customs officers maintained security standards, while processing travelers through, quote, alternative procedures. officials said, quote, there is no indication that the service disruption was malicious in nature. after four hours, all affected airports were reportedly back on line. but some travelers say they were kept in the dark about the reason for the delay. >> nationwide outage of all of the computer systems for customs, just came through. >> okay, good to know. all right, well, it would have appreciated if they had told us that. we would have at least been prepared. >> cbs-3 "eyewitness news". >> that's the worse thing, you get home after a long, long flight from where ever, and you just want to go home, and

let's get taught katie. our penn state in-house fan. katie, you doing okay this morning? >> yes, because it was a great game to watch, even though i did admit inningly make it only to half time before i conked out for the night, regardless, those guys had great season. so proud of the work they d so win or lose, they're still stars to us, right? meanwhile, we've got a lot of weather to tell you about. not only is today going to be another very soggy day, but we're also going to be eventually dealing with some arctic air that works its way in, as the days progress. let me start things offer by showing you what's going on here on storm scan. actually not much locally. but, you can see, right on the tail end of the loop, that little nudge in of a line of green, that moves its way toward dc. and that's what is headed our way. one little zoom shows you over the virginians, pretty good swat of rain moving across the states, headed our way with time. so tail end of what is our typical morning commute, see some steady rain work its way in here.
