national intelligence, the agency created in the wake of 9/11 to strengthen intelligence gathering. the potential revamp comes as mr. trump continues to cast doubts on u.s. intelligence findings that russia hacked e-mails. just yesterday he focused on attacks on the dnc writing on twitter whierks did they not have hacking defense like the rnc had and why have they not responded. >> thisst not about one political party or one candidate. it's a modus operandi they've been using for years and it's an assault on democracy. >> less than days before trump takes office they have mounted their path to dismaptle obamacare despite lacking a plan to replace it. >> the american people have sent new leadership because obamacare

discussions in brazil, argentina, and india. mr. trump has pledged to do no new deals while president and leave management of his company to his sons. and mr. trump appointed former "apprentice" consultant to his staff. she took an active role and will have a public engagement role in the trump administration. ahead on "cbs this morning," we'll talk with tom heilmann about mr. trump's battles with the intelligence community. and now looking to the weather where a series of storms pounding the west coast are reportedly blamed for at least one death in oregon. the weather system is bringing heavy snow measured in feet at higher elevations and flooding to parts of california, oregon, and washington. much of the rest of the country is dealing with bitterly cold temperatures. in california near the foothills near sacramento, the wet weather

pushed a tree into a house slicing it in half. >> i hear him screaming get out of the house, get out of the house and i walked in the living room and i saw a huge hole and a tree. it was very surprising, shocking. >> no one was injured but power to the neighborhood was knocked out. snow made travel in colorado difficult. i-70 in the mountains west of denver was closed several times yesterday. up to 14 inches of snow is expected by later today. and just north of segment where temperatures were below freezing, two teenagers fell through the ice on a lake just minutes after officials alerted the public to frozen lake dangers. >> the victim was exhausted by the time i got to him. he was having a hard time staying at the surface. >> rescue crews say the victims suffered from hypothermia, but they will recover. four people are in custody after a disturbing assault in chicago and it was streamed live on facebook. in the video the duct taped

victim's clothes and hair were cut. the attackers also used anti-trump profanities. police say the incident took place tuesday. the victim was an 18-year-old mentally disabled man who had been missing and police found him wandering the streets. >> have you seen the video? it's sickening. it's sickening. it makes you wonder what would make individuals treat somebody like that. >> so far no charges have been filed against the suspect. transportation officials say they don't know how fast a long island commuter train was going when it crashed at a brooklyn terminal. mostly people suffered minor injuries when the long island train slammed into a restraining block yesterday morning. the first two cars of the train derailed. there were about 600 commuters on that train. investigators plan to interview the engineer who was responsible for stopping the train.

and dozens were injured when two trolleys hit one another. they were heading in the same direction an one hit the other yesterday afternoon. dylann roof says he is not mentally ill and shows no remorse. the penalty phase of his trial resumes today. roof is representing himself and says he will not call any witnesses. prosecutors plan to call 38 people related to the victim. marlie hall reports. >> reporter: dylann roof told jurors he wasn't going to lie to them and said, quote, there's nothing wrong with me psychologically. the 22-year-old said he's representing himself to stop his lawyers from presenting the results of his mental health evaluation. earlier the prosecutors told the jury roof's horrific acts justify the death penalty saying he killed the nine black members at a church because of their

skin. he wrote, i would like to make it crystal clear i do not regret what i did. i am not sorry. i do not shed a tear for the innocent people i kill. roof did not ask to be spared the death penalty during his brief opening statement. he previously said he does not plan to call any witnesses or present any evidence. journalist jennifer berry haws has followed the case from the beginning and is writing a book about it. >> if he receives the death penalty, i don't think it's going to be a huge surprise to anybody. it's sort of just throwing in the towel. >> a way dough also took the stand to testify about the nine victims. marlie hall, cbs news, charleston, south carolina. coming up on the "morning news," building a wall on the border with mexico? a sheriff in massachusetts offers his inmates for the construction job. and farewell ceremony. the armed forces say good-bye to

jill wagner is at the new york stock exchange with that and more. good morning, jill. >> good morning, anne-marie. they did stress the uncertainty it could bring. mr. trump's promises of deregulation, cutting taxes and spending on infrastructure could stoke inflation, and that could mean the fed could raise interest rateses mor s more aggressively. the dow rose. the nasdaq finished about 14 points higher. macy's is closing 68 stores and could cut more than 10,000 jobs. it follows a weak holiday shopping season. the 68 stores are part of 100 that are closing. macy's announced that back in august. all will shut their doors by the middle of this year. macy's sales fell by about 2% in november and december compared to the year before.

elois dickerson saw the price of her favorite drink jump more than 40%. maurice broadwater misunderstood the 96 cent tax on his juice. philadelphia became the first big city to impose a tax on all sugary or artificially sweetened drinks. grocery store owner jeff brown says it's hurting his customers. >> this three-liter soda, our price is $1.39 and additional packs is $1.52. >> that's more than the actual soda. >> reporter: before the tax an eight-pack of gatorade for 36 ounces was 5 clnts 39. now 8:39. and this was $2.79, now $4.71. the commissioner says the tax is
