4:30 am
>> live from the cbs broadcast center in philadelphia. this is cbs-3 "eyewitness news" this morning. well, we are waking to up wintery morning, snow is coating roads, and sidewalks throughout our area. this is a live look at storm scan3. the areas being affected the most right now, we'll let you know when it clears out. well, you're waking to up dramatic drop in temperatures overnight, as women. and as you can see, from storm scan3, pretty soon, katie was breaking it down for us. having technical issues at this point, but look at the lovely ladies here. we have meisha and trang and lauren casey, we just need some direction on where we're supposed to go here. >> let's toss over to katie
4:31 am
then. >> pretty sure it is out of here already. katie? >> guys, you know, that he the thing on storm scan, thankfully really performing as expected it would, this disturbance, brink withing it some snowfall certainly. but now that is beginning to pull away. soap, that's very helpful, and what we are left with out there generally at this point is, you know, with a we will finds as total for this system as a whole. still finding at this point, snow still falling across some of the southern counties, through delaware, through southeastern new jersey, and also even up near some of these northeastern suburbs, like bucks county, and into northern new jersey, as well. little baby tour around storm scan, behind this, we are watching another system begin to develop. back over the central planes, that may, key word may, become a concern for our coastal communities. looking forward, and as we take a look at the winter weather alert posted now through the southeast, they've got full blown winter storm warning, anywhere from the southern delmarva, so awfully
4:32 am
close for comfort, back down into alabama. so, what are we facing back here locally? the possibility that we end up with a couple of inches of snow. and that's not even from this system. that's looking ahead into tomorrow. for now, though, at least what we can guarantee is that this first system is moving out, as scheduled, so i would say, no later than of we are essentially in the clear, but again, that is just a phrase for reference, because the temperatures that we currently find are going to allow the snow to stick, it won't melt away this time, meisha, and obviously, i know you can a test to this, already plenty of problems out there. i see all of the flashing lights behind you. >> started earlier this morning, even before we got on, katie. see it all morning long, i hate to say that, our morning commuters are in for t pack your patience, happy friday, you will be driving very very slow, and that is to your benefit. so, looking at 95 right now, the a south between academy and cottman, all of these vehicles are dead-stop.
4:33 am
all lanes blocked between academy and cottman. you will have to use alternate if you're at home watching this. your alternate, frankford avenue, the boulevard, going to be your best bet. they're stopped because we had jackknife tractor-trailer now moved out of the way. see crews out there, and also cleaning up some of that fuel spill. so because of that, until this all gets cleared up, this back-up is only going to continue and get worse and worse and worse. you can avoid the area, you certainly want to, if you can't, like i said, use that alternate, frandford avenue or the boulevard. also another accident in jersey, two # 95 northbound at route 130 that's been moved off to the shoulder. salting project going on, talking about this all morning long, they're our friend today. a.c. expressway between convention center and route 42, heads up for them. watch out for them. take it very slow this morning, jan, over to you. >> meisha, thank you. our storm center open right now. we do have three school closings, and delays. the childhood development center in delaware will open an hour and a half late. newman university will open
4:34 am
one hour late. and temple bet hillel in wynnewood has canceled morning day care. be sure to check cbsphilly.com and the cbs local app for school closings and delays. so let's get a check on what it is doing right now in south jersey. >> meteorologist, casey -- lauren casey, how is it looking? >> looking snowy, wet, very slick. traffic starting to pick up. maybe that's good news, people giving themselves plenty of time on this morning commute. as we have about an inch on the sidewalk here in collingswood, haddon avenue. but thank you to the owner of the dodge avenger, i used as a snow measuring tool t looks like there is actually about 3 inches of snow accumulation on the top of the roof there on the cars. so there are some fairly sizeable amounts as far as snowfall, inches on top of the cars, make sure you brush that off for your fellow drivers this morning. it is though nice snowman snow, in fact, i made a mini snowman, our most significant
4:35 am
snowfall, but this is the only snowman i could produce because of the low snowfall totals. it is a news and snowfall, but still going to impact your commute pretty dramatically, parts of chester county pick up about 2 inches, macungie up toward allentown picking up about an inch of snowfall, less than an inch in allentown itself. parts of delaware become g up about half inch of snowfall. down the shore not many totals coming in just yet, although soil temperatures along the coastline were about 40 degrees yesterday. so above freezing. so a lot of the snow that has fallen throughout the overnight period has likely melted in these areas. but yes, we do have oh, we have some people that are excited this morning, to be out on the roads dealing with the slick conditions. there is on the treated surface as lot of moisture, especially along the gutters on the sides of the roads there. so, as we head into tonight, temperatures drop well below freezing, there is going to be a concern for some icing later tonight. so, commute, the tough ones, it will be persisting into the overnight, as well. >> who is walking around out
4:36 am
there at 44:00 in the morning, lauren? >> crazy people! >> thought we were the only ones awake. >> cute snowman nonetheless, lauren. >> this storm may be out of here, you can bet, we'll see more snow this winter, great time to download the cbs philly weather app. just search for cbs philly in your app store. >> well, some areas obviously are seeing more snow than others. >> "eyewitness news" reporter trang do, live, in mayfair this morning with the latest, trang, you're pulling double duty as a reporter. i hear good samaritan brushing off people's cars this morning? what's going on? >> reporter: oh, yes, i helped dean mayfair, who is headed all the way mayfair to west philly for work. so, she was actually very happy to see me at 4:00 in the morning, which is not usually the case, and you kind of go over to somebody with a camera and giant light in their face. she was very thankful that we could help her clean up her car. take a look, this is what she
4:37 am
was dealing with here, the snow right now extremely lightment you can see what happened here overnight. and, this is very light fluffy snow, fortunately for people. that snow that just kind of brushes off your car, which is excellent news for people like me who hate snow. but take a look over here. kind of interesting. this parking lot here definitely ready for this. you can see all of the windshield wipers are up. and they should have pretty easy time cleaning up this snow. take a look at the roads over here. this is frankford avenue. behind me. things are looking pretty good. we've been all over the city, just trying to check out conditions. and the city did really great job with these major roads. we were on broad street, here on frankford avenue, now, what we are seeing the trouble is, on 95, at meisha has been mentioning all morning long, there was a jackknife tractor trail their has since been cleaned up. but still quite a back up there. as people were behind that accident and crews still work to go clean that up.
4:38 am
and, you know, that's where we've been really seeing the problems this morning, also on the other side, the northbound side, there were number every accidents, we're hearing about six or so accident, and fortunately all pretty minor, guys, so as the snow lightens up, and people start waking up, it means you're still going to want to use caution. for thely, it is really not that bad if you're driving locally. but for now, live in may fay fair, back to you guys in the studio. >> thanks so much, trang. >> delaware department of transportation workers on the graveyard shift this morning clearing the snow. they've sent these trucks throughout the state to salt roads overnight. crews also spent wednesday and thursday pre-treating roads with brine. >> even with snow crews working around the clock to treat those roads, driving into work this morning can still be tricky. some tips to stay safe include removing snow from all of the windows, mirrors, lights, accelerate and de-sell rate slowly to avoid skidding, and don't pass the snow plows and
4:39 am
sanding trucks. they have limited visibility, may not be able to see you. be careful on bridges and overpasses since they freeze first. >> serious stuff. this frigid weather comes the increased risk of serious harm or even death to those without shelter. now, code blue is in effect in philadelphia, montgomery county, camden county, new jersey, city officials urge you to be specially vigilant in checking in on elderly or handicapped relatives, neighbors that live alone. and if you do spot a homeless person, without shelter, please, call (215)232-1984. >> well, our coverage of this morning's snowfall continues. >> plus, the water main break causes a headache for people in northeast philadelphia. take a look at what some people are dealing with. the truck time neighbors saw before the
4:41 am
4:42 am
>> this is a live look outside. snow is covering our area. but expect slick spots this morning, another check on the forecast with katie, and the roads with meisha, in just a few minutes. >> well, overnight crews continued repairs on water main break, sent water gushing through homes in northeast philadelphia. chopper three, was over the scene on the 11,000 block of millbrook road. it was about 2:00 yesterday afternoon, the water department tells us, a 8-inch main gave way, sending water into about a half dozen homes. well, in some cases, it came in the front door, and gushed out the back. >> we did have a guy tell us the water heater probably definitely gone. depends on the furnace how high that gets, and your dryer. i have a freezer down in my house, that's underwater. that's got to be ruined, i guess. >> what a mess for that poor man. resident say they complains about a sinkhole on the street, but it is unknown if that led to the water main break there.
4:43 am
>> well, dunkin donuts, the american red cross, teaming up for national blood donor month. as part of the give blood hope campaign, every blood donor will get coupon for free dunkin donut medium hot coffee and classic donuts. the campaign's purpose, to encourage people to donate blood during the winter months. >> i always think that's a good idea. help your fellow man. >> absolutely. >> and helping our fellow man is katie. >> yes, katie here with another check on the forecast. >> 4:43. >> katie, calling this is the first significant snowfall of the winter. but as far as snowfall totals go, it is a good way to ease us into winter, though. >> i like that. i like the way you put. that will that's good way of putting it. big fat nuisance, january, frank lip. just because. timing it came, with waking up to this. you know, it is not enough to keep the schools from opening. and it is also not enough to keep many of us from going out on the roads. as i say that, one loan car goes down what looks like very slick roadway here. outside whitfield elementary school, tough to tell, but the
4:44 am
street lights i think do help it along here, see the snow has certainly fallen. blanketing the playground, and the mack adam outside whitfield elementary school. live neighborhood network, 26 degrees there. so still cold enough that the snow is going to stick, and thankfully again this is performing as expected. no curve balls with this particular system. but regardless, some that far snow still out there, across cape may county specially down into sussex county then up in toward, say, the pa turnpike, moving out to long i80 and 78, going into new york city. so that's where your travels take you, you are still going to be finding slick flying out that way. very well defined back edge, see the skies starting to clear out, back through western pennsylvania, with time, actually ends up with some sun, as well, right now temperature readings right around 30, up and down i-95, just shy of it, mid 20's, around lancaster, reading, allentown. let's look off to the south. there is a reason for. >> this which we'll discuss. your currently flirting with 50 in charleston, even
4:45 am
birmingham down to near freezing, little rock, nashville, both 22 degrees apiece. and there is a storm system brewing, out to the west of this, that is going to roll through the southeast, bring that area very significant snow, and possibly up. so let's jump you forward here. take a look where this is going. cuts across the southeast, makes turn to the left. moves to the northeast. this is coming awfully close to our coast. i still like the word possible for two to four should be inches not feet, two to 4 inches every snowfall in the immediate coastal communities of new jersey and delaware, sussex, cape may, looks like it could be the bulls eye point to me, but as we look forward again this will need to be tweaked and find tuned as it comes together. storm track is critical, bottom line here, will make or break us, 36 the daytime high in philadelphia. and it will get awfully coal here tonight bottoming out to 20. look forward to the forecast, stretch of days from saturday through monday that do not even hit freezing, so, it is getting awfully cold outside.
4:46 am
and staying that way for quite a while, meisha? >> so, cold and you will have to take it very slow this morning, good morning, happy friday to you. what we're looking at right now there is will be the jackknife tractor-trailer, between academy road and cottman, all lanes are still block, as crews are still out there. getting this cleaned up. getting the roads salted for you, and also, cleaning up fuel spill. see the back up starting, getting little bit more significant now. as we push toward that 5:00 hour. because all every these vehicles that come to up this spot right now, they are having to stop here. your alternate, frank for or the boulevard, also, we've got some salting in play. this is what we need. a.c. expressway between ac convention center and route 42, basically, that entire stretch, not to mention, not only do we have salting going on, but also have speed restrictions in play, which we need that, as well. so new jersey turnpike between delaware memorial and 95, down to 45 miles purr hour. if i can give you single piece every advice, i would say, even take it a little bit slower than that, delaware memorial bridge, same story.
4:47 am
35 miles per hour, speed restrictions in this area, and also have more in delaware, on 495. but going back to this camera, i think we've got our friend charles metzger from penndot on the line. charles, are you there? >> good morning, how are you? >> good morning to you, friends. tell me first and for most, how was your commute into work this morning? >> the commute was fine. we have nearly 300 trucks out, that are salting and plowing. and we have 118,000 tons of salt on hand. so we have plenty of material, plenty of equipment. the storm happened at a very opportune time for us, overnight before got in and out of the traffic. so we were able to get our trucks out in place. and get out in front of the storm. >> funny, charles, because even though we don't have that much snow, we know even little bit of snow can cause major problems, so, what is your standard protocol on morning like this?
4:48 am
>> well, we pre-treat the roads, we spent the last couple every days doing the ramps on the expressways, and then putting the salt brine down on the major roadways, working our way back into the secondary roads. so we had enough warning time to get out in front of this storm and make sure that snow wasn't sticking to the roadway. >> i was saying this morning that some of the best piece of advice we can say for our commuters this morning is just take it very, very slow, even when salt is in place. so to you our penndot warrier, charles, thank you so much for taking this interview this morning, i'm going to tell them what a great job you do as we all know. we will be taking it very slow and we will be giving a friendly nod to all of our salting trucks out there. >> thank you. >> you bet. have a good one. so you heard it. this is what it is all about. this is when the snow comes down in the winter. this is when we start preaching the gospel saying take it slow, take it slow, take it slow. so jim, jan, i can tell you,
4:49 am
it is going to be a very slow commute on this friday morning. >> that's right, meisha. charlie metzger knows his stuff. he has been covering this for years for us. >> trust that man. >> we will have a check on business headlines this morning. in your money watch report. >> that's coming up in just moments. we'll be

procrastinators rule the holiday season apparently? >> that's right. the group looks across the board sales, both in stores, on line. they found that sales in the week before christmas were actually up 16%, compared to 2015. and they were higher than the week of thanksgiving, and that's the week that typically sees the most sales. so, i guess, people are following my lead and waiting to the last second to shop. jim, jan? >> i may have been guilty of same, jill. >> thanks, jim, we check in with you in the next hour. meanwhile as we continue to watch out for slick roads this morning. >> the check on traffic with meisha and the forecast with katie, in moments, we will be right

you need little refresher course on how to get out and about in this kind of weather. i would say again, these lighter precipitation amount, tends to be the ones we get overly confident in. i always feel like we're seeing more accidents when not dealing with a foot of snow. keep that in mine, even though the storm system or system is exiting, still left this morning with what could still be some somewhat treacherous travels. so of course you have to get rid of the snow from the windshield. don't just try to sweep it off. make sure ' adequately clearing. you want your visibility on your side. be careful, because the bridges, overpasses, could be little slicker, and allow extra time of course, hopefully tuning in right now, because you did set that alarm little extra early. the salt trucks and crews will be out and about doing their thing. give them the room they need. they're doing their part to help us get out and about safely. very cold this weekend, meisha. and possibly at the shore. additional snow.
4:56 am
>> all right, katie, because look at what this is already causing us this morning, on this friday morning. good morning, everyone, just waking up with us, what we are looking at, did have jackknife tractor-trailer, 95 south between academy and cottman, all lanes still blocked, because the crews are out there, we will be talking about this coming up a little bit more. you can see the back up on 95, pushed in the southbound direction pretty significant already. jim, over to you. >> coming up in the next hour of cbs-3 "eyewitness news", the latest on our snowy morning. >> plus this: >> who is going to pay for the wall? >> it was one every president-elect donald trump's platforms. building a wall along the border with mexico. now we're learning who is supposed to pay for it, and it is not mexico. >> also this morning, comment on the vicious beating after man with special needs.

>> live from the cbs broadcast center in philadelphia. this is cbs-3 "eyewitness news" this morning. >> well, snowy start this friday morning, storm scan3, shows, the system moving through new jersey, and out to sea. good riddance. >> if you're gist waking up, you can expect to see the same thing, donna in in mayfair was doing this morning, leave yourself some extra time to clean off your car. >> than is a live look at center city from our cbs-3 studios. still, few flurries strag egg around. the next thing we're dealing with is some arctic cold. today is friday, january 6, good morning, i'm jim donovan. >> i'm jan carabeo. katie and meisha keeping an eye on things this morning, very busy day, we have the storm move through, keeping an eye on the roads. >> traffic, but could have been a lot worse. >> could have been worse. this is no way, we want to start a friday. >> we had jackknife tractor-trailer, everything at a complete stands still, and our photographer now trapped

in it. >> oh, no. >> went to cover it now stuck in all of that muck. so if you can avoid. ninety-five right now you want to, more on that coming up. >> you know, at least it is moving out. but the aftermath is never fun. yes, you know, timing never ideal. but this was far less than ideal. >> the morning commute. >> exactly. waking up to this. you got to get the day started. always at a slow start as it is trying to get out the door, even when sunny and 60. but with winter weather advisory still posted for one more hour here across central and southern new jersey, we still have the flakes flying, as the anchors had mentioned out there. take a look at this point, i would say, that for the most part, what you have got on the grounds is what you will have for the rest of the day. it won't have a chance to melt away however since the temperature is cold enough to support it sticking and hanging around. we do still have some light snow really encompassing cape may county eastern edge of delaware over the bay areas, but it continues to roll out to sea. so this is performing pretty much as
