are injured and we are learning more about the the suspect who is in custody. good evening, everyone i'm ukee washington. i'm nicole brewer. jessica dean has the evening off. gunman opened fire in the terminal two baggage claim. >> he is identified as 26 year-old esteban santiago re ease, his brother says he had been received, psychological treatment while living in alaska. and we have also learned that in the past, he was investigated for child porn. santiago ruiz was immediately taken in custody after opening fire. about an hour later passengers were streaming back inside the airport when another panic broke out. people ran after reports of more gunfire which turned out to be tals. everybody started running out, of the terminal one, out out of the railcar place. so some lady was yelling for help down in the garage. i just ran, here i am. >> reporter: fort lauderdale airport remains closed, tonight. "eyewitness news" reporter david spunt is at philadelphia international airport with what is happening here, david?

>> reporter: hi ukee. authorities at philadelphia international airport are on high alert tonight, passengers are on high leather and they are asking very tough questions, big question, how could something like this, happen. >> fire broke out fort lauderdale airport when police responded to shots fired in baggage claim. >> really upsetting, and i was like hyperventilating all through the trip. >> reporter: diana branch was at the airport at the time of the shooting. the her flight to philadelphia was delayed. she tells "eyewitness news" that there were no announcements on the the flight but people quickly began to find out exactly what happened. >> my sister in law called me and said did you hear what happened? i said in. >> reporter: authorities say the gunman 26 year-old esteban santiago ruiz checked a gun and ammunition in in his bag, picked it up after his flight, went into the bathroom, loaded it, and started firing random ly at people waiting for their luggage. >> there was no security in the baggage claim unfortunately.

you never know what will happen. they will really have to change the methods oven baggage claim at this point. >> reporter: airports do have roaming security guards like this one we have spotted in philadelphia, authorities took santiago authorities into custody. passengers, want answers, as to why a man can pack a gun and bullet in his luggage, and then be able to load gun and open fire inside an airport. >> it is horrible. what kind of world are we living in today and what kind of world am i leaving my children. it frightens me a lot. >> reporter: there were supposed to be flights from fort lauderdale here to philadelphia, a little bit later tonight. those have been cancel. fort lauderdale hollywood international airport is closed for the rest of the evening, just to see exactly when it will open, we do not know yet but airlines are asking you to check directly with them, if you need to find out more information, about your flight. reporting live tonight, i'm david spunt for cbs-3 "eyewitness news". >> thank you, david. reminder to stay with cbs-3 for very latest on the deadly airport shooting.

the "cbs evening news" will also be tracking very latest from fort lauderdale tonight at 6:30 right here after our broadcast. also tonight, another storm watch, this time, the shore is bracing for snowfall but they may not be the only spot affected. we have got team three coverage tonight, alexandria hoff is in cape may where they are getting ready, but lets start with meteorologist kate bilo in the weather center, kate. >> guys, this will definitely be a big storm for the shore, usually we have talk about north and western suburbs seeing the most snowfall and winter storm. this one call it an upside down storm as it moves off the coast, heaviest south and east of philadelphia, and further north and west you go the less and less you will see. very tight gradient with the snow from this system. you can see it breaking out across the southeast, heavy rain, dangerous ice, cross portions of georgia,al bam, mississippi with heavy snow over mississippi and north carolina right now, and thinks all moving off the coast, and it will track up the eastern seaboard toward new england tomorrow and then brush us, as it passes by, and it has been trending closer, and closer,

to the the coast, all week long, and here's what it looks like right now as we head into the overnight hours. by midnight this is what we will see. join us at 11:00. we will look at the is what in progress this will be a now cast situation. we have to follow this storm's exact track because a movement of 20 to 30 to 40 miles could mean a huge difference in snowfall amounts. we expect to see a big shield of snow over portions of the the carolinas and virginia, by midnight, by 6:00 a.m. it is actively snowing in south jersey and delaware. heaviest snow over hampton roads area of virginia. then as we head into tomorrow morning the steady snow, mid to late morning in the early afternoon, along the coastline you can see that dark purple there that banding in philadelphia, light snow, to the north and west, not much at all. lehigh valley may get a flurry out of this, if that, and it continues through about noon time and then we will see it start to tape after two or 3:00 p.m. so, winter alerts have already been issued, from philadelphia , i-95, corridor, and north and west, winter advisory for, interior south

jersey and northern delaware. we have winter storm warnings for area that will see most snow, coastal area and delaware beaches. coming up we will show you how much these spots can expect, what we will see in philadelphia and cold blast that follows this storm. stay tune. nicole. >> kate, thanks. >> we saw was snow blew in earlier this morning and now more flakes are on the way, in cape may county new jersey. usually quiet community this time of the year is now noise which salt trucks. that is where "eyewitness news" reporter alexandria movies live as the community preps for more snow, alex. >> reporter: as kate mentioned, some of this heavier snowfall is likely to begin in this area, earlier overnight hours, and crews say they are ready. >> as skip lockland knows cape may in the wintertime time is a peaceful place. >> we enjoy quiet time. >> reporter: things have gotten more noise any parts of the salt trucks are on the move, distributing a portion of 39200 tons stockpile of salt, and to county and local

roadways. >> this is a different storm, kind of storm we all know and familiar with and comes up the coast and if it comes in at the right time in the the right way we can get a lot of snow. >> reporter: current estimates in the southern most part of the cape may county point to six plus inches, and region got its dry run last night with the light coating, and still enough to put salt trucks on the road. on the state level, major roadways like the garden state parkway have been pretreated with a brine before ongoing layers of salt are added. cape may destination town year round, locals are also in on the prep work to keep walkways passable. >> we will get visitors that come down and like to chill out, for the winter, no pun intended. >> reporter: literal willly yes. >> yes. >> reporter: with that snowfall will likely bring some gusty coastal wind, that could make for dangerous driving conditions. reporting live from cape may, al sand that hoff for cbs-3 "eyewitness news". >> thank you, alex. when winter weather hits

"eyewitness news" reporter cleve bryan has details of the lawsuit. >> i'm in shock. i had blood all over me. i'm not the sure i'm on the ground. >> reporter: income down, beat down joseph fussco came at the hand of the uber driver who didn't want to drive him from philadelphia to cherry hill. >> hoagie was going out, i depended upon that for a ride back to my house. >> reporter: on december 22nd he went to a holiday part which co-workers at kavanaugh 's in university city is 11:00 p.m. called it autopsy night and arranged for a uber driver to meet him at market street. per standard he put his destination in the ride request with you driver didn't find out until passenger was in the car. he said driver, whose identify we are concealing pending possible charges, told him he

wasn't going to new jersey and when he argued, things got violent. >> i was opened up my door and grabbed me by and ripped me out of the vehicle. next thing i'm unconscious. >> reporter: penn police who took report showed him surveillance video. >> you can see the person stump you and repeat live kick you. and then walk back with no regard. >> reporter: nicole got a text that her husband was on the way to the hospital, and she immediately dropped off their you this born baby, to go see him. >> it is just hard to believe. there is blood every where on his taste. didn't know exactly what all of his injuries were because there was blood. >> reporter: he suffered a broken nose, broken cheekbones and lost his front teeth, and adding insult to your the driver charged him nine bucks. thursday his attorney filed a complaint in federal court saying uber shared the responsibility for the attack, that is negligent in screening drivers and promises a state ride. >> those people are vulnerable if they are intoxicated they are expecting a safe ride home

public needs to know the truth >> i'm lucky i got to go home and see my son and to see my wife. >> reporter: spokesperson for uber says they will in the comment on the lawsuit. but they to say that the driver was removed, the day after the incident. i'm cleve bryan, cbs-3, "eyewitness news". city of philadelphia will pay a former pizza delivery driver 4.4 million-dollar in the largest police involved shooting settlement in the city's history. philipe holland seen here was 20 years old at the time when plainclothes police officers the shot him multiple times while delivering food in west philadelphia in april of 2014. his lawyer, says settlement is one step in the right direction. >> i say to myself, how is this possible that this could happen, in the city of philadelphia. that a young man, who is, innocent, just trying to make a few bucks to go to college end up getting gunned down. >> police department also

agreed to establish new protocols and rules, including plainclothes officer a tire, proper laysment and display of patrol badges as well as other new restrictions. we also learned that the the justice department will not file criminal charges against wilmington police officers who shot and killed a paralyzed man. "eyewitness news" first obtained video of the 2015 shooting. police shot jeremy mcdole after he refused to show his hand and reached in the waste band. the evidence does not indicate officers willfully used excessive force. and still to come tonight on "eyewitness news", dozens of animals, now in safe hand. where 30 pets were seized from deplorable conditions and how officials realized something was wrong. plus we're continuing to follow very latest in the deadly airport shooting in fort lauderdale, we will have the new information coming

updating the shooting at fort lauderdale airport. the here's what we though, five people are ted, eight are injured, the suspected gunman is, a man who opened fire in the terminal two baggage claim after taking the gun from his checked baggage. thousand he was immediately taken in custody, his brother says that he had been receiving psychological treatment, while living in alaska. let's show you new video into "eyewitness news" from union city, new jersey. that is in hudson county. police there are in connection with the fort lauderdale airport shooting. investigators are reportedly at the home of the relative of the suspect. the scene is on 20th street. "cbs evening news" will have very latest on the investigation coming up after our broadcast at 6:30. flu season is in full swing with over 4500 cases now confirmed, in pennsylvania, and the cdc says that thinks just the beginning. flu activity is expected to increase across the country

over the next several weeks. this years most common strain of the influenza is known for causing more severe illnesses specially in children and people 65 or older. and doctors want people to be to be aware that a lot of different illnesses are going around. >> we're really seeing an up t ic in allmaner of illness, both, infectious diseases, as well as non-infectious diseases. >> doctors say it is not too late to go out and get a flu shot. they say good hand washing also helps fight off seasonal illnesses. and the pennsylvania spca rescued more than 30 animals after executing a search warrant in northampton county. after receiving tips, the spca found 24 dogs, seven cats, and one african gray parrot living in a residence. the animals were in the home of a self identified breeder. all of the animals were found to be living this inn sanitary conditions. >> sanitation was very bad. individual animals had significant medical issues,

other animals do not. so it is really a variety of conditions, based upon the individual animal. >> authorities say that the breeder became overwhelmed by the amount of animals in their care, the investigation is ongoing, and charges in the case are pending. the elmwood park zoo is mourning the loss of one of their two red panda brothers. the zoo reports that shredder passed away from what vets believe may have been heart disease. zoo staff says that the panda showed no signs of illness earlier in the day. red panda related to shredder passed away in december of 2015 from unrelated encephalitis. shredder and his brothers arrived at the elmwood park zoo from the smithsonian conservation biology institute less than two years ago. northeast philadelphia, crews worked to fix 8-inch water main that ruptured yesterday on the 1100 block of millbrooke road. water has been restored, after the break flooded streets, and the basement of six nearby homes. residents say that they have been complaining, for months,

from this next storm working up the coast. rehoboth beach, this area could get over 6 inches of snow, if the current track of our storm, holds. now this is a very tricky track, because it all depend on how much banding sets up and how much far inland the snow gets but it is a good bet rehoboth beach, delaware beaches and into south jersey will see most snow from this next system. here it is, really impacting all of the south east tonight from virginia, right on down through georgia, florida seeing heavier rain, heavy snow breaking out across mississippi, alabama, thinks shifting off the coast overnight and into tomorrow morning. so timing things out, again, winter alerts in effect. winter storm warnings. that is shaded in pink there. all of them up and down south east and up the coast for south jersey, delaware, right up in to southern new england. purple is winter weather advisory. the that is for interior south jersey. here in philadelphia we are not in any sort of advisory or warning just yet, we will see if that changes if things change tomorrow but as of right now we will stay below

those advisory levels. 6:00 o'clock tomorrow morning snow has started down the shore and southern delaware. by 9:00 a.m. we will see light the snow in philadelphia watch out how it doesn't get to the north and western suburbs. light snow, flurries, but noon , snowing heavily along the coast, that continues into the afternoon hours. and then your snow time line between four and 8:00 moves in south east to northwest, steady is 8:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. and then we will see it taper. coat to go 2 inches is what we expect in philadelphia and i-95 corridor. two to four for camden, gloucester, central burlington counties. four to six in the a wide strip along the coast with isolated amounts of of six plus possible in extreme south jersey and delaware. the behind it, bitter wind chills. tomorrow afternoon at 1:00 o'clock it feels like 11. by sunday morning it feels like single digits outside. that is dangerous cold, early sunday morning. the overnight mainly cloudy, very cold, snow begins overnight, and into the early morning hours, really not here in philadelphia 2348 about eight or 9:00ah but by five or
