at 11:00 a winter storm is making its way to our area, and new information just into our weather center shows snow totals increasing for much of the region. a deadly assault inside a busy airport, firefighter people killed. several injured after a gunman opened fire in baggage claim. >> >> people taking off. new details are emerging about the suspect including his ties to new jersey. it was a scene of fear and.

i'm ukee washington >> i'm nicole brewer in for jessica dean >> officials identified the suspect as he is santa luis, a nj native and military veteran. the 26-year-old opened fire and killed five people inside a baggage claim area at fort lauderdale hollywood airport this afternoon, eight more people injured. police arrested the suspect after the shooting. just a short time ago, federal and local officials held a news conference, announce santiago will be arraigned monday. >> reporter: investigators are not ruling anything out including terrorism but so far there are no known links. nominates after bullets flew in terminal 2 of the off-duty international airport. cell phone video captured the chaos and confusion for passengers as police and

paramedics responded to the scene. >> in all, 13 people were shot. five of them killed by a lone gunman who officials say flew from alaska to fort lauderdale dale. >> one broward county official says the upsetting identified as 26-year-old esteban santiago a former national guards man from ancorage alaska arrived with a gun checked in his bag, went into the bathroom to load it. then started shooting. eyewitness was just ten feet from the suspect when he opened fire. >> he, like i say, just came to the door, did not yell, scream, just started shooting. we thought it was firecrackers then realized it was gunshots, by that time, people are yelling and screaming and trying to hide under chairs, luggage or anything else to get out of the line of fire. baggage

baggage. >> reporter: some shooting victims hid outside. hundreds of others headed for the tar mark and airport roads, using cars and buildings for cover, eyewitnesses any he ran out of ammunition then laid down on the floor before giving himself up to police. about an hour after the shooting, as passengers made their way back inside the airport, there were additional reports of gunfire and once again, passengers began running for cover. fortunately, those reports were unfounded. more now on the suspect's new jersey connection, fbi agents are conducting an investigation at his aunt's house in union city tonight. she says her nephew lost his mine during his one-year tour in iraq in 2010. union city police said by tweet there was no threat to the area. we're learning nor about esteban santiago's. officials say he was receiving psychiatric treatment. he told fbi agents he was forced to watch isis videos and his

mind was being controlled by the cia. officials tell cbs news, the 26-year-old got into an argument on one of the flights to florida. in august, i was discharged from the alaska army national guard for unsatisfactory performance. a woman from south jersey was if the airport during the shooting. she was flying home to atlantic city. she did not want to be identified but did share the frightening moments with us in a text message. she wrote. had to turn phone off for battery but clearly not under control. we're sitting in terminal four when the said solo gunman was in custody. not long after that, people from the terminal next to us started running and tsa personnel airport per se and hundreds of scared people started stampeeding towards us screaming to run. she added, i saw people outside and started running towards the gate that was letting people on to the tarmac, never ran so fast in my life. people being trampled now we're outside hiding.

the frightening moments set off changes at airports around the nation. security was tightened out an abundance of caution, natasha brown is at philadelphia international airport where events of the day left passengers stunned. >> reporter: well, very much so, ukee and we were able to speak to some passengers who were on the last flights from fort lauderdale to fire department. many tell us they had no idea of the terror taking place display neighboring terminal. >> about 1:05 she texted me. >> reporter: fear and panic consumed her, her sister and nephew were inside the terminal at the fort lauderdale airport where a lone shooter was opening firing on passengers in the baggage area >> my nephew heard the shots and everything and they all -- everybody freaked out and ran out.

he left five people dead and at least eight injured. airports acted swiftly with a major police presence stepping up security inside and outside of baggage claim areas >> we were boarding as normal. about 1:15 -- i got a text ask if i was ok. >> reporter: qvc host were one of the last flights out of fort lauderdale. >> reporter: at last check, gina said her sister is still stuck in fort lauderdale left with images >> everyone is shaken and scared and can't believe it. very, very scared. >> makes us, i believe, all very thankful to be -- to be alive and to know that we were for the in the wrong place at the wrong time. >> reporter: while many folks do believe this latest attack really does highlight some of the weaknesses that are still going on in airports around the country, in places like baggage

claim areas and ticket counters left lightly secured and much more vulnerable. that's the latest, reporting at philadelphia international airport. natasha brown, cbs "eyewitness news." we know the suspect had a gun in his checked bag. airlines routinely let passengers travel with unloaded guns in their checked bags as long as they comply with rules set forth by the tsa. passengers must declare the gun at the ticket counter. must be unloaded and in a locked hard sided case. only the passenger can have the key or combination. ammunition malls go in checked baggage. must be boxed in the hard sided case with the firearm. firearm parts are also allowed in checked baggage. >> stay with "eyewitness news" for continuing coverage. you can find updates any time at cbsphilly.com >> we're again talking about snow. a system is headed or way that could bring a substantial

snowfall, kate bilo is tracking the timing of this saturday storm. it is on its way. it's producing heavy snow across portions of virginia and the carolinas. north carolina especially right around raleigh. the extreme northwestern part of the state seeing heavy snow, dangerous ice around the atlanta area headed off the coast and that will bring it close to our area. let's time the out here as we head through the overnight hour, the precipitation notice how it has expanded bate to north and west. we talked about this earlier. this is something we would have to watch. is this going to expand? looks like it is. that means further inland we could see more snow than we had anticipated from this system. here's 9:00 a.m. the heaviest is at the coast. southern and southeastern delaware extreme south jersey coastal areas will see the most snow from this as you head back to philadelphia. we could see moderate snowfall from at least 9:00 in the 1:00 p.m. in the city, and that could lead to increased totals.

take a quick look again, 11:00 a.m. we're still seeing the snow, 1:00 still snowing. especially heavy down the shore. finally after about 3:00 we see start to wind up and move on out of here. may not clear the coast until 4:00 or 5:00 p.m. philadelphia lower bucks montgomery county, delaware county now included in the winter advisory, winter storm morning with coastal areas these are the spots we'll see the most. snow moves in southeast to northwest between 4:00 and 8:00. steadiest between 8:00 and 2:00 and a gradual tapering from west to east after 2:00 p.m. some spots at the shore will end up with over six inches of snow xhj. the latest update, what you can expect where you live on saturday. nicole back over to you. >> we're on storm watch tonight and shore communities could see the biggest snow totals, alexandria hoff is in cape may to show you how residents there are getting ready for the storm.

police identify the shooting suspect at 26-year-old esteban santiago ruiz. a new jersey native and military veteran who lives in ancorage. flew from alaska to florida. his luggage was the handgun he checked. police say he loaded the weapon in a bathroom and opened fire in a baggage claim area. five people killed, eight wounded. florida writ scott traveled to the airport. he called the deadly shooting a senseless act of evil. >> the state of florida, law

enforcement in this state will not tolerate evil acts. whoever is responsible will be held accountable to the full extent of the law >> he's also been in touch with donald trump and vice president elect pence. in other news, the city of philadelphia will pay a former pizza delivery driver $4.4 million, the largest police involved shooting in the history. he was 20 years old when he was shot multiple times when he delivered food in west philadelphia in april of 2014. the officers were looking for a gunman in that area. but hold land thought they were trying to rob him. he put his car in reverse to get away. police agreed to establish new protocols. president-elect donald trump met with top u.s. intelligence officials today over alleged russian cyber hacking in the 2016 presidential election. mr. trump said he learned a lot from the intelligence briefing

but declining to say if he accept russia's role in the metalling. in a new declassified report says russian president vladimir putin ordered the interference. a string of severe winter storms headed across the country. dozens under weather weather advisories. daniel nottingham has more. >> first of three storms already dumped eight feet of snow in the eastern sierra mountains in california. man mouth is expecting another ten feet when a powerful storm from the pacific ocean hits in the next few days >> the storm pattern meteorologists call an atmospheric river has northern california cities bracing for one of the wettest winters anticipating what is expected to be the worst flooding in two decades. that is stretching across the country. winter storm warnings covered parts of the southern plains and the great lakes, western new york was hit with

two feet of snow. hundreds of students were stranded in classrooms in a buffalo suburb. nearly 20 spent the night at school. >> it's fun but not fun. because it was like we were stuck in a room. >> reporter: snow and ice are in the forecast from the midwest to southeast. in atlanta, storm anxious shoppers cleared store shelves >> we're securing adequate food and fuel in case of an extended storm. >> reporter: at least athlete states declared states of emergency ahead of the storm. daniel nottingham, cbs news. >> we're, this is kind of something we've been watching, but lately. once we got last night's storm out of the way. looks as though it is back a little bit further inland, a major storm for the coast. not as big inland. i believe we'll have impacts

here in philadelphia it keeps getting a little more inland as we go through the night. let's break it down. new information this evening caused me to up the snow totals slightly. the shore right along the immediate coast, that's the area that she don't see the highest totals. some spots looking at over half a foot of snow. the light fluffy snow. good for shuffling not great for snowball. we'll start you off in rehoboth beach, this is one spot in a winter storm warning, rehoboth beach could pick up over six to eight inches. the extreme southeastern corner of delaware into the delmarva delmarva region. these are the area that is will see the heaviest, this camera will look a whole lot different at this time tomorrow. here's our system, stormscan 3 showing what i've been pointing out how this is expanding to the north and west. you can snow getting into west virginia now and as this continues on its north and east projectory, we're going to see

the snow is sneak in to the shore points. you can see it has intensified here north of raleigh, north carolina, heavy banding setting up and banding is another wild card. it has posted a blog on cbsphilly.com. i go into detail about the different wild car cards, one is the cold air causing the light fluffy snow. another one is banding and tough to forecast in advance where the heaviest bands. the winter alerts right now extend across the carolinas and virginia. all the way up to portions of new england, you can see a winter storm warnings for coastal new jersey and delaware. i just mentioned that light fluffy snow. notice how cold it will be throughout the duration. temperatures are in the 20's. that means you get snow ratios of 15 to one. that means in a normal storm with temperatures near freezing, you get a ten to one ratio. this means snow could exceed

that by 50%. you're looking at higher snow total thanks to that nature of the snow. the moisture content in the snow itself. notice the spreads in from south to one way or the other at 8:00 a.m. we start to see in philadelphia, it's 22. it is snowing heavily at this point. 9:00 a.m. this track to expand it right into portions of the lehigh valley, light snow or flurries in the morning, there's a very sharp cut-off. if that edge this 20's or 30 miles to the east. you get lower snow totals if it edges back to the west. the jackpot zone right up and down the eastern sea boards. high to the storm in the city and nearby suburbs 8:00 to 2:00 p.m. longer duration 5:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. so that long duration will lead to higher snow total, two four

inch line back into the city of philadelphia, i think we can get two, three inches here, lower amounts to the north and west. but again, the big winter is here. depending how you feel about snow, four to six inches with the narrow band of six to eight plus along the immediate line. on sunday you'll wake up windchills in the single digits and some spots below zero. overnight. we're down to 20's. clouds light snow to the north and west. heavy snow to the south and east again we could expect to see over six inches in some spots. roads will be a mess especially tomorrow. sunday frigid. monday is too and back to 50's by monday, huge swing and all the snow will begin to melt. >> the big melt-down. and pat is here with sports. >> the flyers done pretty well.
