center in philadelphia. this is cbs-3 "eyewitness news" this morning. a live look now at storm scan3. another winter storm is making it way into our area this morning. justin is tracking the possibility of significant accumulations. how much, that is straight ahead. anarchs live look right now, in ocean city. where the storm is picking up. areas along the shore could see some of the most snow from this storm system. >> but, here in wilmington, no snow yet. the city streets are still clear, we look downtown on east state street and north market street. today is saturday, january the seventh, 2017. good morning, everyone, i'm jan carabeo. let's get straight over to meteorologist, justin drabick, with eyewitness weather. justin, real a coastal curve ball. because we're not used to seeing this amount of snow. the higher snow totals, down to the shore towns. >> exactly. little bit of sneaky system, stays off shore, close enough to bring the snow and a lot of cold air in place, all snow event. we don't have to worry about

freezing rain, and i think time to get the snow around wilmington, philadelphia, more hours to go yet. already snowing south jersey, intensity will continue to pick up. snow lovers, loving this forecast if you live in central southern delaware, southern new jersey, potential for good plowable snowstorm over 6 inches of snow, from the system, and once the storm passes, just reinforce the cold air, so, full-on winter conditions throughout this entire weekend across the delaware valley. outside to philadelphia, center city, all quiet still. really nothing happening. see flurries, next couple of hours, cold, though, 24 degrees, northeast wind at 15. feeling like 11 with the windchill. there is storm scan3, you can see, the brighter purple there in south jersey, indicating the snow that's reaching the ground. some light snow falling out of the clouds, up around philadelphia, into the north. but a lot of that just is evaporating before it reaches the grounds, air is dry, it will take some time to moisten up the atmosphere. winter weather advisory in effect for the areas in purple. philadelphia and surrounding suburbs, areas in pink, that's the winter storm warning,

south jersey, central southern delaware, areas under the warning will see the most amount of snow. so for today, periods of snow, the steadiest will be late morning, into early afternoon. around the city, at this point, expect around 2 inches, less to the north, more to the south. along the coast, six, seven, up to 8 inches of snow along the immediate shore line. there are the temperatures, cold, stuck in the 20's all day long today. so it will be that fluffy, dry powdery snow. that's good thing for shoveling, cleaning off your cars, blows off pretty easily, upper 20's, that's it, for philadelphia and the shore. the heaviest snow at times will be along the shore points, and the poconos should stay dry, not a bad day for skiing and riding. good conditions to make snow. but it is cold high near 20. i'll let you know when things warm up, i show you the seven day in a few minutes, jan, over to you. >> it is now 6:02. so time to check the roads, over to amanda mueller at the cbs-3 traffic center. morning, amanda. >> morning, jan, sites every snow in the area, pretty quiet

morning, one cloe he closure talk becomes all lanes on 495 northbound in delaware at edgemore. those are blocked. that's due to earlier tractor-trailer fire. your best bet to get around that is 95. otherwise, everything is running smoothly so far this morning. this is live look at the schuylkill expressway. spring garden. absolutely no delays to report there or on any of your majors right now. and shifting over to mass transit, everything is running smoothly at this point. but due to construction, all market frankford line passengers boarding between eighth and 15th streets, you will need to board from the eastbound side. that's in effect until 4:30 monday morning. and, taking a last look at the roosevelt boulevard, this morning, you've got some growing volume out there. people head out before the winter weather heads in. at the cbs-3 traffic center. a.m. and doo mueller, back to you. >> thank you. we are on storm watch this morning tracking snowfall all across the region. "eyewitness news" reporter anita oh, live in ocean city where the snow has already started falling. how is it looking now, anita? >> reporter: good morning, jan. well, really since the last time you came to us, when i told you that there wasn't

anything sticking to the ground, that's since changed. take a look at the ground here, you can already see, there is a layer of snow coating the sidewalk here, and it is really sticking, my photographer kyle actually through snowball that almost hit me in the face. really under stands now that you can pass this -- pack this snow together, it is sticking to the grounds now. take a look at the roadways, just saw snow plow come through. just few cars taking it slowly on the roads. they're actually making it through just fine though. because the road aren't bad yet. this is really just the beginning of that storm. but again, since the last time you came to us, it is really steadily and consistently falling. it is getting steadier as just the minute passes, so because of this, theus rear continuing to work. they've been at it since lat nice -- since last night. working through the day today. weep know that 66 crews, and more than 500 trucks will be working state-wide to fight this snow. you're looking at video from

cape may county yesterday. and this is the same story here in ocean city. there will be crews out here all day, laying down rock salt, laying down brine to make sure the roads are safe, possible for you. the national weather service says, though, the i-95 corridor will be specially difficult today. that's where they are expecting a lot of this snow to fall, especially here along the southeastern shore, we are going to see a lot more snow. that is what the national weather service is saying. soap, right now, the conditions are okay on the road. that will of course continue to get worse as the storm gets worse. the snow is steadily falling right now. the winds is also picking up. we're hearing the street signs here creaking as the winds continues to pick up. so, again, right now, so far so good. but we are feeling it getting worse as even the minute pass. we will continue to keep an eye on this, let you know as the morning goes on, for now live in ocean city, anita oh, cbs-3 "eyewitness news". >> tell your photographer kyle

it is much too early to throw snowballs, just relax out there. >> thank you. kyle? >> we'll check back in with you later. >> now is a great time to make sure you have the cbs philly weather app on your phone or tablet, with it, get the latest winter weather updates from the eyewitness weather team. download the app now at the app store or google play. >> new this morning, a collision involving a car and van in montgomery county sends two people to the hospital. it happened around 3:00 this morning on the 400 block every front street in conshohocken. now there is no word on how serious those injuries are. the cause of the crash is under investigation. around 2:00 this morning, authorities responded to a multiple vehicle crash in northeast philadelphia. this crash happened at the intersection of rhawn street and lexington avenue. authorities say no one was seriously injured, and no word on the cause of that crash. meantime, police are looking for the person who killed a man in north philadelphia. officers returned the 1,000 block every west clearfield street just before 1:00 this

morning, they found a man believed to be in his 30's, with several gunshot wounds. he was pronounced dead a short time later. in other news this morning, fort lauderdale hollywood international airport has reopened following yesterday's deadly shooting there. so far though there is no word on a motive for that shooting, but authorities and relatives say the suspect, esteban santiago-ruiz has history every metal problems, and getting psychological treatment. he's a new jersey native and military veteran who lives in alaska. f.b.i. agents have visited his aunt's house in union city. now investigators say santiago ruiz opened fire in a baggage area friday afternoon, five people killed, eight more injured, craig boswell bridges us up to date on this investigation. >> we have a subject -- >> cell phone video captures the moment after a loan gunman started firing in the baggage area of terminal two at fort lauderdale airport friday

afternoon killing five people. hundreds of panic passengers ran out of the airport. others hid inside. >> he was not targeting, he was just randomly shooting, like wacking through woods and picking things off like target practice. >> police say 26 year old esteban santiago-ruiz flew from al last that zero to florida, after arriving in florida, police say santiago loaded handgun in a bathroom and then opened fire. >> we are looking at all avenues. we have not ruled out terrorism. >> police and witnesses say santiago fired all of his three magazines of ammunition, and surround end heard when police enters the building n november, santiago walked into fbi officer in anchorage, he told agents his minds was being controlled by the cia, and claimed he was forced to watch isis video. >> at that time he clearly stated that he did not intends to harm anyone. however, his irradic behavior

concerned f.b.i. agents. >> local police took him for mental health evaluation. santiago served with the alaska national army guard until discharge in august for unsatisfactory performance. >> his aunt told a new jersey newspaper her nephew lost his minds during one year tour in iraq in 2010. santiago is expected in court monday. craig boswell, for cbs-3, "eyewitness news". now, more on the suspect, new jersey connection, as we mentioned, f.b.i. agent went to his aunt's house in union city. she says her nephew lost his minds as you heard in that report in his one year tour in iraq back in 2010. in a tweet, union city police emphasize there was no threat to the area. in the meantime, learning more about the suspect, esteban santiago-ruiz, he got into an argument on one of his flights to florida, also was receiving psychological

>> the snow as you can see is falling there at pretty good clip right now. you can see, the winds is whipping, too, blowing the snow around. the shore is expecting some of the highest snow accumulations, in our entire area. justin is ahead with the latest in just a moment. >> here in downtown wilmington, though, all is quiet. the snow hasn't arrived there just yet, no problems either. you can see the streets and the sidewalks are clear. >> the winter storm inning toward us, left snow in alabama. forcing the governor thereto declare state of emergency. it was enough to cover the roads, and enough for drivers to keep speeds to 25 miles per hour in birmingham, ice made the roads dangerous. people warned everyone to stay off the roads, it appears they

did for the most part. >> back now, here in our area, looking at our forecast, fortunately, justin, this is snow event as you mentioned, we don't have to deal with ice that other part of the country are experienceing. >> also the forecast, snow and rain line, it is all snow. the key is how close does the storm system get to the coastline? we know extreme coastal new jersey, delaware, will see the most snow from the system. and it is coal, snowing down to the deep south. how deep the cold air mass is, and one thing that does help out, the clean up on the snow. cold temperatures, that dry powdery fluffy snow, easy blows off your car and easy to shovel. another thing it doesn't take much snow to accumulate. dry fluffy snow accumulates much quicker than the heavy wet stuff. right now temperatures low to mid 20's from the weather watchers. check it out. everywhere across the region supports snow. 24 degrees here in philadelphia, at phil's house, dry, cloudy skies, here in the city start to see some snow. down to northern delaware, you guys are under winter weather

advisory few newark delaware still dry conditions at newark. checking in at 24 degrees, and to south jersey where we are seeing the snow, like i said, the most snow from the system william powell in woodbine, 24 degrees at this hour. and he just said just starting to snow, in woodbine, new jersey, snow intensity will start to pick up over the next few hours, brunt of it will be late this morning into the afternoon. staying in south jersey, to ocean city right now, live look at the boardwalk, you can see snow covered boards at this hour, winds will pick up, visible continue to drop this morning, you saw the temperatures. so, everywhere will be able to get the snow on the ground. it will stick to the roadways, even along the immediate coastline. storm scan3, shows that steadier snow to the south and east. cutting across southern new jersey right now. heavy snow falling, extreme southern delaware, down toward ocean city maryland, saulsbury maryland, winter storm warnings in effect, heavy snow does work its way north and eastward, over the next couple of hours. snow flurries showing up on radar here, probably not

reaching the grounds just yet, some of the far north suburbs, eventually see the light snow around the city. that system bringing snow and wintery weather to the deep south. winter storm warnings in effect into the carolinas, blizzard warnings in red here around norfolk, virginia, into northampton county, virginia, that's the southern eastern shore of the delmarva peninsula, into cape cod, blizzard warnings in effect, strong winds sustained over 35 miles per hour along with higher gusts, back here in the delaware valley, 8:00, start to see some of the steadier snow trying to move into the city. we will be seeing sharp edge, cut off to the snow, pretty much lined up around i95 corridor, maybe light snow in the northwest suburbs, heavy snow, again, interior south jersey, along the coast into delaware. and then by four, five, 6:00 the snow tapers west to east, pretty fast moving system. there is going to be burst of heavy snow into south jersey, so allow that quick accumulation. tomorrow, pretty quiet. sunny, just windy. and staying cold. snowfall amounts, north of the

city. coating. maybe up to 2 inches for some of the suburbs. around the city i would say about 2 inches, immediate amounts pick up further south you g along the immediate shore line, six, seven, 8 inches, maybe possibly up to ten in some isolated spots. along the immediate shore lines. south jersey and delaware. there to could be worse, though, remember 96. blizzards of 96. we had 30 inches snore he here for philadelphia. so that's not what we're dealing with for this storm. just memory. it happened this time january 6th through the ninth, 1996. one of the most amount, big he snowstorms we've seen here for philadelphia. winds will kick up tonight. windchill values down around 12, later tonight, and then tomorrow, or later this evening, we will be into the single digit tomorrow morning it, may feel like zero at times, even below zero in a lot of the suburbs. well the cool pattern stick around tomorrow, even into monday, extended period, where we are below freezing, finally tuesday, cold air starts to move northward. we get a push of warmer air for the middle of next week,

make a run at 60s, ahead of the next storm system, then see some rain. so for today, cold, steady snow south and east of the city, upper 20's at best for the high temperature tonight. clear skies, windy a colds, 16, feels like zero with the winds. here is the extended forecast, sunny and windy sunday, upper 20s again near freezing monday, upper 30s tuesday, then 50's, for the end of next week some showers around, wednesday, and again on thursday. jan, back over to you. >> justin, thank you. well, get ready to pay more to drive the pennsylvania turnpike. starting tomorrow, it will cost you 6% more if you pay cash, or e-zpass. turnpike commission approved the hike last july, to help pay for rebuilding and widening the turnpike. it will also support pennsylvania's public transportation needs. >> philadelphia's now the largest city in america to charge attacks on sugary beverages. in a preview of story coming own cbs this morning saturday, jericka duncan tells us despite the money going to education initiatives, not everyone is happy with the new

tax. >> at the shoprite supermarket in philadelphia, people are experiencing sticker shock over the increased cost of sugary drinks. seeing the price of her favorite drink jump more than 100%. >> ridiculous. >> maurice misunderstood the 96 sent tax on his juice. >> i thought that was the sale price of 96 cents off. >> philadelphia became the first big city to impose the tax on all sugary or artificially sweetened drinks. the tax adds 1.5 sent per ounce. grocery store owner jeff brown says it is hurting his customers. >> this 3-liter soda, our price is 1.39. and the additional tax is 1.52. and then there is sales tax. >> more than the actual soda? >> before the tax, # pack every gatorade with 160 ounces cost 5.99. the new price 8.39. this gallon every iced tee which was 2.79 now 4.71.

aside from health benefits, deputy revenue commissioner marissa waxman says the taxes meant to help the community. >> we anticipate that the first year of collections will generate about $91 million, that we can put toward pre k community schools as well as parks, libraries, rec center in but gram says the city has to find a better way. he returned his iced tee. >> i got my money back. >> after realizing he paid almost $2 inbev raj taxes. >> some people i spoke to said they'll shop outside of philadelphia to avoid the tax, or simply start drinking more water. right now, at least four cities in the country have passed similar taxes on sugary drinks. jericka duncan, cbs news, philadelphia. >> and still ahead right here on cbs-3 "eyewitness news", a recent study says fire not ice brought down the titanic. >> and don't you worry. this cat is just fine.

that's what new documentary scheduled to air later this month on the smithsonian channel says. >> new evidence of an overlook incident, affecting the super ship. >> look at this anomaly in the hull. >> wow. >> titanic experts says recently uncovered photos show 30-foot mark on the titanic's hull. >> the first thing that shook us was that this is the exact location, not only where the iceberg strikes, but also where there had been a spontaneous coal fire all through the made encouraging voyage in 1912. >> maloney is says the firemen from the ship spoke about the fire when they reached land. >> everyone of them are saying there was serious fire on board. >> even if we never heard about it from leonardo or kate. more like flying below deck, it is believed the coal fire had burned for days as crew members tried to put it out. >> that level of temperature

that. deputy able to get her free without her being hurt, now the homeowner had the garage door opened for awhile, and thinks bella fell asleep on top of it, when he was leaving the house he put the garage door down, she apparently got stuck. luckily, she is safe and sound now. thanks to that sheriff's deputy right there with the about big smile on his face, no doubt they are new best friends. >> and i just can't imagine that cat would stay on that garage door as it goes down. eight more lives. so she has time. the weekends is here, and once again, we are talking about snow. this is a live look at the ocean city boardwalk, where snow has been falling for more than an hour now. and, here's what the storm system looks like on storm scan3. making its way up from the south. this storm could bring substantial snowfall to parts of the region. justin is back with what you can expect where you live.

carabeo, this is meteorologist, justin drabick, talking about weather, very couple of interesting days you've had yesterday and today, especially this storm. >> gentlemen, we will flip the storm around, highest snowfall amounts south of the city specially along the coast, more of coastal storm, there, you get the snow. we'll see snow here in the city, outside right now nothing happening here across the region, pretty quiet, light snow will start to develop over the next hour or two. not going to see huge system here for philadelphia, and maybe up to 2 inches or so. light powdery fluffy snow will develop. it is cold. right now at the airport northeast wind at 15, feeling like 11, so not much change in the temperatures. see the steady snow indicated by the brighter purple there, in south jersey, delaware, that snow is reaching the ground. snow showing up on radar, around the city on northward, but there is -- the air just too dry, a lot evaporating. that's the story. that's why sharp edge to this system, right around the city. so points north of the city, little if any know fall

expected. visibilities, there, starting to be reduced along the coast, indicate that snow intensity starting to pick up. almost down to mile at the atlantic city airport, 2.5 in wilmington. best in effect for philadelphia and surrounding suburbs shall then the winter storm warnings in effect for the areas in pink for southern new jersey, central southern delaware. those areas under the warning will see the most snow. for today expect periods of snow developing. the steadiest late morning into the afternoon. again around the city, 2 inches or so. further south you go, amounts start to increase, six, seven, maybe 8 inches along the coastline. temperatures right now, holding low to mid 20's, same deal in the suburbs, that's pretty much what we will be dealing with, high today struggling to get to the upper 20's, with the heavy snow at the shore, looks like poconos stay dry, just some clouds, high near 20. talk about warm upcoming up in a little bit. but at least the good thing about this is dry, powdery snow, easy to clean up, not the hardest pack snow. >> and on the weekends so we don't have to worry about the

commute. depending where you live maybe stay off the roads little longer today. 3:00 # one, so let's check the roads this morning with amanda mueller at the cbs-3 traffic center. hi, amanda. >> high there jan. the snow starting to come down at the shore. starting to see some reduced speeds put in place there. right now the garden state parkway cape may has been reduced to 45 miles per hour speed limit. that's between route 109 and route 72, in new jersey. and as we mentioned earlier, all lanes on 495 northbound in delaware edgemore, they're blocked, that's due to earlier tractor-trailer fire. your best bet, get around that, is i-95. so if you are planning on taking amtrak today, you will want to check your schedule. many trains operating on adjusted schedules today due to the weather. that's expected to affect trains from boston on down to north carolina. and taking a last look at the ben franklin bridge this morning, looking good, headed in or out of the city. planning on headed out today, now probably your best time before the winter weather kicks in, at the traffic center, amanda mueller back to you. >> mentioned those reduced

speeds in cape may county well "eyewitness news" reporter anita oh, live in ocean city where snow is already steadily falling there. and eat a, how is it looking now? >> reporter: jan, justin, every time you come to us the conditions are different. so on our way over here few hours ago it was completely clear, just few flurries in the sky. about 30 minutes ago, the snow really started coming down much heavier. you can see this healthy coating of snow on the grounds, what came down just about a half hour ago. since then, right now, it has tapered off. see few flurries in the sky, really not as bad as we were seeing even 15 to 30 minute ago, the winds then was really picking up, as well, with the street signs here increasing. almost thought our light here would fall over because of the heavy winds. here in the roadways, pretty clear. we've seen one snow plow come through. and several cars, we actually even saw one man on a bicycle few minutes ago. so the roads are looking pretty clear right now,

prepare for all of this, the crews getting ready. looking at video from cape may county. >> this was yesterday as crews were preparing to lay down rock salt and brine on the road, this is of course across new jersey we will see this. new jersey department of transportation says they have 66 crews state-wide that will be working to fight the snow more than 500 trucks on hands to take care of any mess this storm might be dropping. of course, here in ocean city, and across the southeastern counties, we will be seeing a lot more snow. several inches expected the national weather service of course keeping an eye on that, as well. so, right now, not too bad. it is really tapered off quite a bit. but throughout the morning we have seen a lot steadier snowfall coming down. it is sticking. i told you about a half hour ago my cameraman through a know ball at me. so it is sticking to the

ground. also seeing few icy spots, as women. so headed out this morning you will want to take caution, drive a little bit more slowly, there are some trucks coming through, as well. and they'll be of course taking care that far throughout the morning. we will keep an eye on. that will let you know the latest, live in ocean city, cbs-3 "eyewitness news". >> i think a loft kids will be having some fun down there at the shore today. thank you so far. >> absolutely. >> now, whenever winter weather hits of course you can always count on us for coverage and we want you to help us tell the stories. sends us your snow photos and videos by using the #cbs3 on facebook and on twitter. >> in other news this morning, fort lauderdale hollywood international airport is open again after that deadly shooting there yesterday. now while investigators won't comment on possible motive, they say, the suspect, esteban santiago-ruiz said the government controlled his mind. his family says the new jersey native who now lives in alaska had history of mental health

problems, and receiving psychological treatment. authorities say esteban santiago-ruiz opened fire in the baggage area, killing five, wounding eight others. woman from south jersey was in the airport during the shooting. she was flying home to atlantic city, she did not want to be identified, but says, she shared these frightening moments with us, in a text message, take a look at this, the woman wrote: got to turn the phone off for battery. but clearly not under control. we were sitting in terminal four when they said solo gunman was in custody. not long after that, people from the terminal next to us started running and tsa personnel, airport personnel, and hundreds of scarred people started stampeding toward us screaming to run. she added: i saw people outside and started running toward the gate. was letting people into the tarmac. never ran so fast in my life. people were being trampled, now outside hiding. >> the shooting in for the later dale forced tighter

security all across america. natasha brown was at philadelphia international airport where the event in florida stunned passengers. >> about 1:05, she texted me and said there is an active shooter. >> from that moment on, fear and panic con seemed jean a her sister and nephew were inside the terminal at the for the later dale airport where loan shooter was opening fire on passengers in the baggage claim area. gina was boarding her flight in another terminal she got her sister's message. >> my never ooh heard the shots and everything. then they all, everybody, freaked out, they ran out. >> chaos and carnage followed as police say the 26 year old gunman left five people dead and at least eight injured. airports like philadelphia international airport act acted swiftly with major police presence, stepping up security inside and outside of baggage claim areas. >> we were reporting as normal, about 1:15, 1:20. i didn't know anything was going on until i got a text from someone in philadelphia who asked was i still in florida and was i okay.

the snow into delaware, slowly works its way northward. let's take you outside. neighborhood network, looking from the palmyra cove nature park, new jersey camera. 22 degrees, looking across the delaware, you can just see overcast skies. those visibility still up around the city. not seeing the snow yet falling at the grounds. coming out of the clouds little bit, atmosphere little too dry from the city on northward, a lot of this, evaporating before it reaches the ground, may see few stray flurries over the next few hours, steadier snow confined across southern new jersey, atlantic, cape may county, sussex county delaware. dover seeing light snow. also millville, reporting some light snow. that continues to push off to the north over the next few hours, and should get into the sit probably around 8:00, 9:00 or so. it will be light. again the most heaviest snow will be confined down into southern new jersey, and delaware, later this morning, into the afternoon. so we time things out. now through 8:00 the snow arrives from south to north, between 8:00 and 2:00 the stead jest know fall, after 2:00 this afternoon, snow will tart to taper off from west to
