4:01 am
god bless you. may god continue to bless the united states of america. good morning from the studio 57 newsroom at cbs news headquarters here in new york. good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. so last week top u.s. intelligence officials delivered to president-elect donald trump an unsubstantiated report that russia had potentially compromising personal information about him. the allegations were part of a report on russian interference in the u.s. election. soon after the report surfaced last night, mr. trump tweeted, fake news, a total political witch hunt. mr. trump is set to hold his news conference here today. good morning. >> good morning, anne-marie. as you say, we do not know if the allegations in this report are accurate but it plays into criticisms that he's been too friendly toward the long-time u.s. rival.
4:02 am
trump is pushing back hard on these allegations. at president-elect donald trump's first news conference since his election, he's likely to face questions about russia's meddling in u.s. politics, specifically new bombshell reports that russia gathered potentially compromising information on donald trump but chose not to disclose it during the 2016 campaign. president-elect trump and his campaign responded tuesday night. fake news. a total witch hunt. >> we should be concern thad the intelligence officials leak to the press and won't go tell the president-elect or president what it is. >> multiple government and intelligence officials tell cbs news the information yoshlg nalgly came from a credible former intelligence officer.
4:03 am
the details were part of an annex in the classified report president obama ordered into russian hacking and was presented to the president and president-elect last week. >> i felt it was important now that it's over for everybody to understand in order to prevent it from happening again. >> in the run-up, mr. trump has had a strained relationship with the intelligence community and the press. he hasn't held a press conference since july. >> he's going to have a lot more pressure because of the lack of attention to the media that he's had than otherwise would have been. >> in addition to russia, mr. trump is expected to address conflicts of interest as well as his son-in-law jared kushnering. >> it was not included in the classified report given more widely to congress. it was only given to a handful of top officials and it's not clear if mr. trump actually read those sections, anne-marie.
4:04 am
>> brook silva-braga in new york. thank you. "face the nation" moderator john dickerson spoke with elaine quijano how the president-elect's team might react to the allegations. >> we'll see if the press conference still goes forward is the first question, because the central claim here, this is an annex to the intelligence report he was giving and the briefing, is about collusion potentially and these are allegations and this all has to be responded to and reported so that this is -- we have to be very sensitive here, but that there was some activity between the russians trying to influence the election and the campaign. asked about this in the past, i've asked kellyanne conway about it and others whether there was any connection. she has denied it flatly. the campaign has denied it flatly, that there was no campaign and anyone associated with the trump campaign.
4:05 am
that's the big question. the question is not just on president-elect from his supporters, but this also gets into an issue of what fellow republicans do. >> well, ahead on "cbs this morning," we'll talk with former cia deputy director mike morrill about the unconfirmed claims russia has the compromised information. when the confirmation hearing for the attorney general nominee jeff sessions resumes today, a ellow senator cory booker will testify against his colleague. he'll testify on having a concerning record on civil rights. yesterday he says he once made damaging statements. sessions said he'll stand up to the white house and he did not believe muslims as a religious group should be banned from the united states as once proposed

4:07 am
and you made me a better man. >> reporter: mr. obama recounted some of his accomplishments in the white house. >> if i had told you ate years ago that america would reverse the late recession, take out the mastermind of 9/11, win marriage equality, and secure the rights to health insurance, you might have said our sights were set a little too high. >> reporter: he also spoke of disappointment. >> race remain as potent and often divisive force in our society. >> reporter: the president used his speech to encourage supporters to engage in the political process and to keep fighting for these issues they believe in, but he also had a cautionary tale about the current political climate. >> if we don't create opportunity for all people, the disaffection and division that has stalled our progress will only sharpen. >> reporter: the president
