i'm concerned about a few slick spots tonight. let's zoom in on the region. , seat pink is an indication of freezing rain and drizzle off to our south over portions of new castle county into south jersey and back into lancaster and chester county. when the snow light tense up you start to see a little bit of drizzle and that driven can freeze on contact with temperatures at the surface below freezing especially untreated surfaces and bridges and overpasses. zooming in you can see a snow hole over philadelphia. we're not seeing much at all. steadier light snow over chester county into montgomery county but as you head down into new castle county delaware here along 95 that's where we are seeing some of that pink. southern chester county into the wilmington area and that's an indication that there could be some freezing rain occurring. we don't expect much. a few hundredths of an inch but that can be enough. it doesn't take much when you're talking about ice to cause slick conditions. earlier over an inch of snow in bush kill.
6:02 pm
trace in new castle delaware. snow amount not impressive with this system but the freezing rain freezing drizzle noun that that temperatures are dropping below freezing any wet spots on the roads will refreeze tonight. this winter weather advisory went into effect at 7:00 a.m. it's just chester county and lancaster county but what to expect for the next few hours light snow or a wintry mix freezing drizzle is possible. watch for some icy spots but we're talking about little or no additional snow accumulation. the biggest threat now just slick spots with the threat for icing. we have a major warm up on the way into next week and rain returns. more on that in a few minutes. natasha. >> kate thank you. many are getting their errands in tonight before the brunt of this weather hits. "eyewitness news" reporter alexandria hoff is live in west chester with the latest on preparations there. alex. >> reporter: well, natasha, on our drive we did see these crews contributing to their preparations that have been taking place throughout the day. a few salt trucks, even a few plows really on stand by at
6:03 pm
this point. we still really are in the front end of this winter weather advisory that will stretch throughout the evening hours here in chester county with temperatures hovering around the freezing mark. this will likely as kate was mentioning be a mix of light snow or freezing rain so it might be a good idea to head out now in these evening plans early because the roads could get messy. of course that means ice forming on walkways and bridges becoming especially hazardous during those times but honestly what sounds the best right now is to head out get your chips, maybe some dip and settle in for a great evening of football. reporting live in west chester, i'm alexandria hoff, cbs3 "eyewitness news." >> all right, that sounds like a plan to me alex. thanks. icy roads are causing serious crashes in the midwest. one was caught on camera in oklahoma. interstate 40 had to be closed in two places in western portions that of state because of crashes. the national weather service

says kansas and missouri could see a third band of sleet and freezing drizzle early sunday making roads very treacherous. dogs are certainly known as man's best friend and that's especially true for a police k-9 and his handler. a fou four legged member of the westville new jersey police department is hanging up his collar. "eyewitness news" reporter cleve bryan has more. >> reporter: he's got a nose for crime. >> he's responsible for seizure of eight handguns over 15 pounds of marijuana and numerous other narcotics. >> reporter: and a bark that makes bad guys freeze in their tracks. >> he has almost 50 surrenders of people giving up because of his presence. >> reporter: for eight years remi a westville police k-9 has been at patrolman brian's side. >> every call you go to motor vehicle stop or any other call you almost have someone with you. he's a push button away. on my belt i can push my button if someone runs and he comes right out and do

special anniversary. >> reporter: hundreds of boxes celebrating 100 years. >> celebrating 100 years of selling cookies and actually girl scouts were the ones who founded what a s'mores was. it's new and improved. >> reporter: s'mores is the brand new girl scout cookie flavor. yes, you heard that right. what's your favorite. >> the new one s'mores. >> reporter: on saturday morning dozens of cars lined the park lot of cardinal o'hara high school in springfield for a mega drop as volunteers picked up cases of girl scout cookies to fill orders across our region. >> thin mints. >> reporter: perhaps sweeter than the cookies are the lessons instilled in these young girls. >> everyone is equal and a girl can do thanksgiving a boy can. >> to be friends with everybody. >> they learn about teamwork, they really set goals together about goal setting as a team. they learn about handling and
6:08 pm
managing money. >> reporter: and those are all values jennifer dimeo learned firsthand when she was a girl scout. >> it was a great bonding experience, get to meet new friends and it was fun activity that we got to do so it was just a great experience. >> reporter: now she volunteers for her daughter's troop. the girls love cock keys people love cookies so it's a lot of fun. she likes to go to our neighbors and to friends and they make some money for the troops and they get them to do activity with and in they earned. >> reporter: so if you see a girl scout buy cookies. a box might cost you four dollars but the take away is invaluable. in springfield anita oh cbs3 "eyewitness news." >> a big test today for the race into space. still ahead, space-x sends a rocket into orbit. we'll tell you why this mission is so important lesley. >> well, some true flyers legends taking the ice tonight for a very good cause. some of the older flyers that are playing say this is it, the grand finale so this is
6:09 pm
going to be a special one. we'll hear from them coming up. kate. >> lesley you've got ice behind you there. some spots will have icy conditions on the roads this evening as temperatures drop below freezing. still looking at a little bit of rain and snow out there. i'll have the latest look in storm scan3. i'll tell when you this moves out an warmup returns to the area. we'll be right back.
6:10 pm
6:11 pm

>> well, a space-x success. the falcon nine rocket blasted off from vandenberg air force base in california today. space-x's first launch since a fiery september accident. return to space is an important step for space-x which has planned about 70 launches worth more than $70 billion. saw a little precipitation on the car earlier just a tad. >> just a little. >> just a little bit of a dud across the area. >> that's what we've been talking about all week. this doesn't have a lot of moisture to work with at all. it's starting to ramp up a little bit now. the problem is now temperatures are dropping so we have to watch for icy spots. as we take you will out to our roof cam you could really see the precipitation falling right now but it is lightly in the city of philadelphia. some mixed rain and snow. the problem is when the snow tapers off when it gets really
6:13 pm
light sometimes you see it change over to drizzle and with temperatures hovering near the freezing mark we'll see the threat for freezing drizzle likely not in the city but the further north and west especially you head where temperatures are hovering around freezing right now untreated surfaces could get a little slick. you can see how cloudy it is as we look live from across the river palmyra cove looking towards the city of philadelphia. can't really see the skyline. low clouds, little bit of fog. it's just not a very nice night to be outside. temperatures are holding in the mid 30's and again like we said yesterday this is off to our south and west yesterday but it's the neapolitan ice cream cone of winter weather. a little snow to the north you got that wedge of ice in the middle. nobody wants to be in the pink. that's not where you want to be. that's the threat for ice and freezing rain. then you have plane rain down across portions of delaware. could see some sleet in that pink as well. so, just a wintry mix depending on where you are and it's intensifying more now across the area than we've seen most of the day. so, especially if you're in new castle county delaware, along 95 watch for slippery sports i'm concerned about areas to the north and
6:14 pm
westchester county up into upper montgomery county where we're seeing a little bit of light snow possibly mixing with some rain and temperatures as i'll show in you a moment right now are below freezing. so, it's 31 in lancaster, it's 30 in reading, we're right at freezing in wilmington. 29 in allentown. so, any wet spots on the roads puddles anything like that especially untreated surfaces they could get slick tonight. please be safe out there and we're very close to freezing elsewhere. plenty rain that is falling could lead a couple hundredth's of an inch of ice. so, just be a defensive driver tonight if you're heading out. make sure stuff your foot on the brakes at all times. future radar, you can see light snow possibly hanging around until about 9 p.m. in our northern suburbs. mainly rain to the south. we get that light band of freezing rain possibly even near philadelphia. by 11 o'clock we see most of this move out. temperatures do drop below freezing so any puddles any wet conditions on the roads could refreeze overnight. a few icy spots cannot be
6:15 pm
ruled out but then we're back to the 40's with lots of sunshine tomorrow. so on the roads through this evening should have been a yellow light there. we'll give you the yellow light. green light on sunday. few icy patches overnight as well so just watch out for that. not a huge deal. this system more of a nuisance than anything else. but do you have to be careful. inn you're out and about tonight. then it turns warmer. watch out the jet stream lifts to the north and we get into a prolonged warm spell. you see this big ridge in the jet stream on thursday over the central part of the country. that heads our way friday into saturday. and wait until you see just how warm it's going to be. for your sunday, sunny, quiet, seasonable, temperatures in the mid 40's to near 50 in some spots. we're looking at 45 on sunday. monday 44 degrees with a mix of sun and clouds for martin luther king jr. day of service. tuesday rain, milder, we're back to the 50 and then wednesday near 60 again with rain likely. the end of next week into next weekend looks dry and warm
6:16 pm
with highs in the mid-50's. pretty great for january. >> we're all over the place aren't we. >> it's been a crazy month. >> thanks so much kate. so good to have both you don bell here tonight. >> good to be with you. >> why, thank you. >> that's how we roll on sunday during the football season. >> that's right. we go way back. >> but we're talking about pucks. different from football like we normally talk on the weekend here. twice would be nice. flyers haven't won back to back games since more than a month ago. they look to change that in boston. defenseman mike in the lineup. flyers down three-none and power tripping. brayden schenn with the redirect t his 15th of the season. flyers within one. later on fly guys short-handed, patrice bergeron off andrew mcdonald sting past michal neuvirth in goal. flyers trail four to two. still in the second boston pouring it on.
6:17 pm
the one timer. i feel like he's played forever. the flyers get blasted in bean town six-three your final score. the flyers are celebrating their 50th anniversary this year. they're also celebrating the players that have made the franchise special. tonight, the flyers greats of the past will play the penguins alumni. lesley van arsdale joining us ice side with more. lesley. >> reporter: that's right, don, so many special players here today as the flyers alumni take on the pittsburgh alumni and you know what a big rivalry that is. this is going to be a great, great game out here tonight but let's show you the video we shot a little bit earlier of some of the players arriving. of course there's number 88 eric lindros but lots of other familiar faces as well. i just saw bobby clarke in the hallway and while some people think hockey's kind of like riding a bike talk to the older players 'cause they're going to tell you no, it's not. things hurt. >> stick skills are gone, my hands are gone, my feet are
6:18 pm
gone and my endurance is gone. i know i can skate and i've lost so much power in my legs but at 61, those things are expected. >> when you don't do it for so long it's really hard and then you're laughing the whole time, you don't really catch your breath so a lot of fun. hopefully we can find lightning in a bottle on saturday and have a great day. >> reporter: now, all of the money raised here tonight will be going toward a fund to build a new ice skating rink in the name of the late owner ed snider. so, a great game and a great cause. dornbach to you. >> lesley thank you. we'll check in with you tonight at 11:00. villanova visiting saint john's. wildcats dipping into their bench for some help. jay wright and the cats playing in front of 17,000 at the garden. it was packed house. we pick it up in the second half. dante dee vi divincenzo.

the nfl playoffs are under way. the birds haven't played in the post season in three years. their longest route since the late 90's. this week i spoke to philly legend dick vermeil who gave head coach doug pederson some advice before the season. >> just be yourself doug. you've had a great background as a player. you've had a great background with andy reid. you're ahead of the game starting out. you know what pro football saul about. you have assembled a good staff. now let them coach and go to work and always be honest with the kids and make sure they know that you care about them. >> had a great conversation with dick vermeil. he told me the one thing that carson wentz really needs to improve on, must improve on. hear the rest of our conversation after the texans and patriots game. coverage starts at 8:00 right here on cbs3. good times with dick vermeil. >> can't wait to hear. thanks don appreciate that. still ahead, one of philadelphia's most treasured
