mall to honor an african-american and the fourth to honor a non-president. good afternoon i'm rahel solom solomon. jim has the day off. many people are using their time off from work on school on mlk holiday giving back in the spirit of the civil rights leader. david spunt is is live at girard college in north philadelphia. david, thousands are volunteering on this day of service. good afternoon. >> rahel good afternoon it may not look busy behind me it is packed in the building behind me beautiful day for this day of service. it is the oldest and largest day of service in the country. people were out litter literally at the crack of dawn to help set up for this special day. >> 5,000 people crowded the armory at girard college to remember martin luther king, jr., and give back in his name. >> be humble, be kind, be in service, god love you all, god bless you. >> annual tradition kick off this morning at nine al family, friends even strangers met to build bridges in the name of service.

>> great day for unity. >> kevin coleman is an employee at the girard college. and came out to help his favorite school and favorite city. in honor of dr. king. >> people are actually involved in doing things that they normally don't do on a regular basis they doing now. >> first lady frances wolf, fire commissioner adam teal and commissioner richard ross along to help local kids put together shelves for families in need. >> we're writing letters to military families to their children, we're giving them books and we're making dresses for children in africa. >> reporter: i met a lot of people from all different walks of life in the main theme today everybody tells me they are inspired to do service to do work in their communities. if you want to volunteer folks will be here for the rest of the afternoon also many other events going on in philadelphia we have some of those on our website cbsphilly.com. rahel, send it back to you. >> david, thank you. speaking of other events happening let's go back now live

to the liberty bell where it appears they start to tap the bell any moment now. this is now 32 years in the making it actually began back in 1986 at the request of dr. king's widow coretta scoot king. let's see if we can hear this >> father will bring us the final prayer and we'll have another selection by the choir to which we'll end our program. because we will have to depart right away. >> we understand u.s. senator bob casey is in attendance. we can also see senator casey there but also philadelphia mayor jim kenney just behind him. we'll have more on that coming up later on "eyewitness news" at 5:00. in other news residents of brookhaven delaware county back in their homes this noon. they were evacuated after a gas main break. it happened at dutton mill road and greenwood street in brookhaven just before 9:00 this morning. take look. chopper three over the scene police and fire equipment health emergency groups get a handle on

the situation. officials say a contractor struck the main. there are no injuries and roads in the area are open again now. and finally, some relief for residents in fishtown dealing with nass seive sink hole. "eyewitness news" has learned that gas service was restored late last night. and the philadelphia water department says they hope to have water running by wednesday. the sink hole opened up eight days ago after a water main break on boston street. and in weather sunny skies will give way to cloudy skies this afternoon and those clouds will bring us some rain and also a change in temperature. let's get first look at the forecast with meteorologist katie fell lingerie on the cbs3 sky deck. >> very quite beginning to the afternoon under way right now. barely a noticeable breeze out here, certainly full sunshine. you mentioned it too. there will eventually be clouds a sign of things to come. new update freezing rain advisory will be taking effect as we hit tomorrow. let's take quick look at that freezing rain advisory. specific to the far north and west counties lehigh valley, berks county points north and west of that are includ include.

you can see the beginnings of the clouds we're talkin talkingt moment ago. delaware starting to see the cloud deck move in. we have at least climbed above freezing everywhere. we do expect to hit the mid fours before the day is all said and done. 42 your current temp at palmyra upper 30s through the north lying suburbs. in the meantime again happy martin luther king, jr., it's a quiet afternoon. with that said it will not stay that way. with this next front moving rain is in the forecast. i'll time that out for you a it will later on. rahel. >> katie, see you soon. thank you. congregation at a northeast philadelphia synagogue dealing with even more vandalism just week after another synagogue was targeted. this time the vandalism turned up on the wall at the beth solomon synagogue on rhetoric streets in sudden ton. a total of seven since last november. >> the other day we came and we found some people had scribbled on to the wall the stone that's on the -- special stone,

jerusalem stone it's very beautiful and it's very powerf powerful, and when people do thing like this, it's very worrying, very upsetting. >> synagogue in tacony was targeted by vandals last week. well a memorial service today in abington will honor teen who investigators say was killed by her adoptive mother and her boyfriend 14-year-old grace packer will remembered at the abington loves grace memorial service this afternoon. bucks county prosecutors say the teen girl died at the hands of sarah packer and jacob sullivan after the two plotted the girl's murder as part of some sort of sick twisted fantasy. the meme crab held held 1:30 this afternoon. police are looking for two people who robbed a woman at a south philadelphia garage masked man approached the 24-year-old woman's car around 2:00 sunday on sagrada broad street near the marine club condos. man brandished a shotgun and demanded her belongings. she tried to drive into the garage but the suspect followed broke her car window and hit the victim was a shot gown gun.

a woman took her bag out of the struggle. law enforcement officials are meeting ba it today with house speaker paul ryan. camden county police chief thompson will meet with the speaker. thompson has work on developing a new set of standards for community policing as well as training initiatives that are already in place in camden. we are now just four days away from the inauguration of president-elect donald trump, and the president-elect showing no signs of slowing down on twitter. correspondent jamie, shows who the president-elect is now targeting in his latest war of words. >> reporter: president-elect donald trump told his millions of twitters followers to celebrate martin luther king day by honoring the great man. the tweet comes as mr. trump spars with another civil rights icon. >> i don't see president-elect as legitimate president. >> reporter: after georgia congressman john lewis doubted mr. trauma pops legitimacy because of russian hacking the president-elect shot back. mr. trump sweeted, lewis should spend more time on fixing and

helping his district adding he's all talk talk talk no act. lewis is an icon at the civil rights area rah. he was beaten during the voting rights march from thelma to montgomery, alabama. with four days to go before the gnarring the president-elect also lashed out at the outgoing head of the cia. mr. trump tweeted that the agency couldn't do much worse an act of cia director john breen nan was the leaker of fake luce after ben can said the lead pregnant doesn't fully understand the russian threat. >> when he speaks and reacts, make sure he uppeds that the implications and impact united states could be profound. >> the president-elect also says he's almost ready to unveil this proposal to replace obama care. telling the washington post, the plan will provide insurance for everybody. he's leaking at the pharmaceutical companies. eat looking at other ways to drive costs down and frankly give accessibility and options to people they don't have now. >> trump team will release details of the plan after the

killed when the turkish airlines cargo plane went down in the village early this morning. now the plane had seating for 10 people but it's not clear how many people were actually on board and how many were killed in the village. investigators blame low visibility for the crash. prosecutors have issued arrest warrant for samsung's over allegations of babe perjury and embezzlement. lee jay i don't know set to appear wednesday before a judge they will decide if the man expected to head south korean largest com bloomer rate will be thrown in jail. it's a scandal that prompted lawmakers to vote to impeach south korea's president. former philadelphia maffia bosnick key scarfo died in federal prison is the age of 87. an attorney family confirmed to cbs3 he passed away at a federal prison medical facility in north carolina. known as little nicky he took over the philadelphia crime family back in 1981. former philadelphia eyre err george anastasia told us how the mob changed under scarfo. >> terribly volatile, short temper, very violent.

>> whoa! >> reporter: two touchdown south of dallas heavy near ones damaged a hangar at the grand prairie airport. further north ice more than an inch thick in some places crippled parts of the great plains in midwest. crushing trees, cracking power lines and disabling cars. >> covered up my pick up. covered up her car. covered up the neighbor's van. just been digging every since. >> reporter: the region has been under assault since friday. battered by freezing rain and snow leaving thousands of people without power. on the roads, crews worked overtime clearing ice and snow. >> there goes another one right there. >> reporter: ice storm devastated highways. >> he rolled over. >> reporter: leaving drivers spinning out of control. dak cam videos shows a kansas city trooper making narrow escape after a semi tractor trailer loses control on an icy road. at least two injuries were reported in the 20 car pileup

near downtown wichita. in nebraska two semi trucks crashed on interstate 80 causing one to erupt in fiery blaze. deiceing crews were call out at st. louis lambert airport where over 100 flights were delayed or canceled due to the storm. there is more rain in the forecast for some of the affected areas but the good news is, it should remain above freezing for a good portion of the day which will hopefully help melt all of the ice. incredible images. >> i always say there's nothing scarier to me than losing control and ice like that. >> absolutely. >> you have no control of the situation. oh, my gosh. >> yeah. >> i was telling you one of my friends is a reporter in kansas city and i know prior to the storm she was sort of getting all the groceries she can to try to hunker down ultimately you have to get to work and get to school. >> sure. >> what do you do? >> exactly. >> do the best that you possible confidential. thankfully we are not expecting too much ice but there is at

least a minimal threat. we showed that you freezing rain advisory earlier in the show. so, you know, we are still in the midst of the storm really bringing a quite a nasty swath of icing across the central planes as we speak. here locally freezing rain advisory gets posted as of 4am tomorrow. specific to the far north and west most suburbs much let get you outside and show that you broad swath of what it's still an ice corm warning across western kansas, eastern nebraska and a good chunk of iowa right now. then you've got winter weather advisories in lighter shade of lavender indicating the freezing rain advisories which again we are now in the midst of here locally. so this really continues to be a very menacing storm for the central plains. when you look at it, it's still looks that way, too. we do still have some rain. we do have the potential for stormy weather down towards the lower mississippi valley. snow still churning away across the central plains all that pink is the icing but thankfully the temperatures now at midday are climbing at least in some of these spots. this warm front what will be lifting into as we had mention

mentioned. so come early tomorrow morning your temperatures very likely still to be close to freezing he will we'll get to more of that in a second. i want to show you the pattern. light rain tomorrow then the cold front leaving behind a leftover shower on wednesday morning. especially. we're still in the 50's. cold front is lack luster when it comes to the cold air ushers in. we'll see the temperatures get knocked back. but we're still in the 50's through thursday and even beyond that point. let's back it up one more time. talk about tomorrow morning. even as early as tonight. look at this. a couple of speckles might begin to show up if our temperatures are just right it could lead to some icing on contact here. so when you're closed to the freezing mark and if you've got to travel beyond the this is going on tomorrow morning at 5:00 a.m. please keep an eye on the car thermometer and stick with us both on air and online we'll get you through it. especially north and west most suburbs could see freezing rain initially as temperatures climb of course through the course of the day it's going to be a better chance for to us see it all turn over to rain. but mount pocono trying to stay at 32. through the majority of the day.

these temperatures are climbing it's going to be very noticeable to us beyond that point. how much milder it's turning. he's your general bullet list here. bullet point list i should say. freezing rain far north and west. talking rain amounts of up to quarter of an inch. not much. light winds thankfully but the rain is going to be running theme of tomorrow. outside we go to nice bright beach pa police headquarters here. light waves lapping up on the shore line i wouldn't call this a great beach day. calm day region wide as clouds are building it's just tranquil. high hits about 44 degrees. later on night drop down to 36 as we mentioned that possibility of a shower through the overnight. but as we look forward in the seven take a look. wednesday, yeah, that's a nice mild day behind that light round of rain that's going to come in tomorrow. have your umbrella tomorrow you'll be able to break it or put it ba, in the closet on wednesday and we actually keep the 50s through the majority of the forecast. just keeping in hyped for reference normal high is 40 degrees. >> it's normally the coldest time of the year so this is
