for malaysia airlines flight 370 ends leaving families forever ends leaving families forever searching for answers. captioning funded by cbs good morning from the substituted yo 57 newsroom at cbs news headquarters here in new york. good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. this morning the search for malaysia airlines flight mh-370 was shut down. in a joint statement center by the three countries involved in the search, malaysia, china and australia officials said in part, despite every effort using the best science available, a search has not been able to locate the aircraft. flight 370 vanished on route to kuala lumpur to beijing. there were 239 passengers and crew on board. no remains were found. you and the search area over 46,000 square miles of the

indian ocean. a few random pieces of the aircraft did wash ashore but the plane's disappearance became one of the great aviation mysteries of all time. officials admit they have may have been looking in the wrong area and the vastness of independence yash ocean is a lot to overcome. >> it's not easy. it's very difficult. i've been to that water and going through all of these difficulties. >> officials say the decision to suspend the underwater search has not been taken lightly or without sadness. well, in another indication of the shaky relationship between the u.s. and russia, this morning the russian foreign ministry accused the u.s. of spying. sergey lavrov said u.s. diplomats have engaged in espionage trying to recruit senior russian diplomats. in a wide-ranging news conference lavrov also talked

about working with the trump administration to fight international terrorism. lavrov invited the incoming trump administration to attend the upcoming syrian peace talks in kazakhstan. the german foreign minister said the comments caused ago ton initialment. and secretary of state john kerry said it was inappropriate for mr. trump to interfere in german politics. the president-elect called chancellor merkel's refugee project a mistake. and causing lawmakers to boycott his inauguration. mr. trump met with the son of dr. martin luther king jr. in the midst of a heating feud between mr. trump and civil rights hero john lewis. hena daniels is here in new york. hena, good morning.

reaction to mr. trump's comments on nato and u.s. relations with russia. and cbs news will have all-day coverage of the president-elect trump's inauguration, this friday, beginning with "cbs this morning." the gunman who opened fire at a crowded beachfront resort in mexico remains on the loose. at least five people including one american were killed. the blue parrott nightclub is located at playa del carmen on mexico's yucatan peninsula. >> everybody is running out even the security guards were on the ground. i knew at that point there were shooters. my back had broken and i knew there was nothing i could do. >> a mexico official ruled out terrorism and said the shooting started when a man with a gun was stopped from entering the club. the gunman expected of killing 39 people during an

attack at an istanbul nightclub confessed to the shooting. the suspect is from uzbekistan and trained in afghanistan. he was trained late monday and according to the governor, it's clear he carried out the attack on behalf of isis. during the search for the suspect 50 people were detained. and the widow of the orlando nightclub killer will face a judge in california today. noor salman was arrested yesterday by the fbi on an obstruction of justice charge. she moved to the san francisco area after omar mateen killed 49 people at the pulse nightclub last june. sources say florida authorities suspect her of aiding and abetting the attack. turning to the weather now. a winter weather advisory is posted for parts of the upper midwest this morning. pockets of snow and freezing rain have developed from the central plains to the great lakes. this is part of i storm system that hit parts of iowa, nebraska

and kansas hard with a dangerous thick coating of ice. trees and power lines snapped and roads were too slick to drive on. in texas trying to dry out following a winter downpour that caused widespread flooding. the storm triggered tornadoes from houston to dallas. well, the last man to walk on the moon makes his final voyage. astronaut gene cernan is being remembered for his passion for solar exploration. ♪ i was strolling on the moon one day in the merry, merry month of ♪ ♪ ♪-e december ♪ may . >> cernan and harrison schmidt spent over three days on the moon's surface. it was cernan's third trip to space. 12 men have walked on the lunar surface. cernan died in a houston hospital following a long

police in suburban chicago are being sued for false arrest and excessive force in a confrontation with a black driver that was caught on video. dean reynolds has the dramatic footage. >> reporter: on october 10th, 2015, a caller to the evanston, illinois, police identified as blake murphy thought she saw someone breaking into letter car. >> he was african-american with a black hood. >> reporter: but as a police cruiser rolled into action, murphy began to waiver. >> i don't know if i'm like racial profiling. >> reporter: the man at the wheel was lawrence crosby a 25-year-old candidate for a phd at northwestern university. and the car was his. the dash cam in cosby's car
