good morning from the studio 57 newsroom at studio headquarters here in new york. good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. at least six people were killed when gunmen opened fire at a mosque in canada. it left eight others wounded. two suspects are under arrest. the canadian prime minister calls the attack a terrorist act. hena daniels is here in new york with the details. hena, good morning. >> good morning, anne-marie. police say the situation is now under control and the mosque has been completely evacuated. an eyewitness said they saw a gunman firing on about 40 people before heavily armed tactical police stormed the mosque. they blocked the area around the islamic cultural center as they carried away victims. the president of the mosque who

was not in there at the time where several peer were killed when gunmen opened fire on them during evening prayers. they say an estimated 60 to 100 people may have been there at the time. at least two people have been arrested. quebec city has been attacked by terrorism. hard to believe. >> the mayor immediately called the attack on terrorism and he tweeted, my thoughts are with victims and their families. they announced they would take in entries temporarily blocked from the u.s. as part of president trump's travel ban on immigrants. >> we have to keep working together striving toward an open inclusive peaceful society. that's the right response to this terrible event. >> back in the u.s. authorities

are taking action. the nypd has added extra officers to patrol mosques citywide. new york city mayor bill de blasio is urging all new yorkers to remain vigilant. he tweeted his connell dough lenses to the people of canada writing our prayers tonight are with the people of quebec city as they deal with a terrible attack on a mosque. we must stand together. >> and quebec officials have called for solidarity rallies across the city today. anne-marie? >> hena daniels here in new york. thank you so much, hena. well, in this country president trump's immigration cramdown sparked protests throughout the weekend. thousands gathered outside the white house yesterday, eventually marching to the c capit capitol. at the detroit airport they chanted no hate here refugees welcome here and last night they gathered in sitting in and

blocking traffic. a pause for all refugees admissions to the u.s. and the temporary suspension of all visa holders from seven muslim majority countries, but the administration later said citizens of the seven countries that hold green cards allowing a foreign national to live and work in the u.s. would be allowed to re-enter the country. the rules caused confusion at airports wi s where travelers w detained. >> i was nervous wondering what was going on. i was nervous. i'm happy now i'm out. >> a string of rulings in five states temporarily halted the deportation of travelers affected by the president's directive. today house and senate democrats will gather on the steps of the supreme court to demand that the president withdraw his executive order on immigration and some of mr. trump's fellow republicans have been critical as well. in a joint stanlt senators john

overnight iraqi forces backed by the u.s. military are making gains to push out isis in the city of mosul. charlie d'agata is there. >> reporter: it's been more than a hundred days since the battle to retake mosul began. each with the backup of u.s. air strikes, iraqi forces have only recaptured the eastern side. as we drove through the streets, we witnessed a trail of destruction and the fighting that had raged here. the journey made more eerie by the fact that isis military and sympathizers might be watching. iraqi commanders believe a

number of fighters were locals and simply melted back into the community. iraqi special forces took us to mosul university, the scene of a ferocious battle to recapture an isis hq. retaking the university was a strategic and symbolic victory for i wraky forces. it served as an isis headquarters and command and control center which made it a prime target for u.s. and coalition air strikes. this captain told us some isis fighters fought to the death. do you remember how many car bombs? three car bombs. iraqis believe isis used it as a missile factory. here's where the fight has come to a standstill right along the banks of the tigress.
