. breaking news, a political shake-up in the trump administration. why the president fired the nation's top justice official. >> also tonight, preparing for more snow. salt trucks on the schuykill expressway tonight. we begin with breaking news. president donald trump has fired the nation's acting attorney general. i'm yukee washington. >> and i'm jessica dean. this move comes after sally yates fee fused to defend the immigration ban because she said she is not convinced it is lawful. in a statement trump said she betrayed the department of

justice. >> reporter: from the steps of the u.s. supreme court. >> we will not let this evil order make us less american. >> reporter: people across the country continue to protest president trump's executive order to ban citizens of seven countries with predominantly muslim populations from entering the u.s. for at least 90 days. refugees from all other countries are banned for 120 days and refugees from syria are banned indefinitely while officials reevaluate vetting procedures. the white house says there's no specific terrorist threat at this time and the ban aims to keep it that way. >> we're not going t wait. >> reporter: several gop lawmaker the are critical of mr. trump's order. >> this was overly broad and over i. rushed and implemented in a haphazard manner. >> he's trying to keep us safe.

>> let's not take any more immigrants until we have a vetting process as i understand it. it seems reasonable to me. >> reporter: pennsylvania's governor says the commonwealth is challenging the president's executive action in court along with 14 other states and district of columbia. lawyers from the aclu of pennsylvania and other organizations will file a federal was too broad and poorly explained. this apparently resulted in denied entry into the united states for lawful permanent residents and others who should have been allowed immediate entry. >> by this time tomorrow night we will know who the president has picked to fill an empty seat on the supreme court. one of the leading contenders has ties to pennsylvania. eyewitness news reporter david

spunt joins us from our satellite center with more on the potential picks. >> reporter: justice scalia died last year and the supreme court has been with a vacancy since. tomorrow night president trump says he will fill that spot and rumor has it that a pennsylvania judge is supposed to be at the top of that list. president trump is set to make an announcement that will affect americans for years even after he leaves office. >> a person who is unbelievably highly respected and i think you will be very impressed with this person. so that will be 8:00 tomorrow night at the white house. >> reporter: sources tell cbs news one possibility is federal judge neil gorsuch based in denver. then there's pennsylvania federal appeals court judge.

he sets on the third circuit court of appeals. >> he is outstanding in every way. >> reporter: chip becker is an attorney and he argues cases on the federal level and knows the judge personally. >> reporter: i've argued before the judge several times and i've won cases and lost cases before him and based on that experience i would say that he is an excellent judge judge maryanne trump barry who has advocated on the judge's behalf to her father. >> it would be shocking to me if their relationship were anything other than warm or cordial. >> reporter: hardeman has already been nominated and

confirmed twice once as a district judge and once as a circuit judge. some democrats are vowing to put up a eliminate two regulations for every new regulation they create. the trump administration argues the executive order will help cut the burden of businesses of complying with federal standards. the president was surrounded by small business owners and vice president pence when signing the order. >> we are tracking more snow tonight after a day filled with fast-moving storms. several snow squalls swept through the region. how quickly the snow covered tree limbs and

>> the skwauls from interesting because they popped up quickly. it went from sunshine to whiteout condition. the sun is out and all of a sudden the snow starts to fall. you can't see the buildings briefly and then they're back. the sun returns. now it's 26 degrees and that means we do have the threat for slippery spots. i'll talk about that in just a moment. want to start with storm scan 3 which shows the squalls have fizzled but here's our next system. most of this will miss us to the north. but there are parts of the region that could pick up some accumulating snow tomorrow especially in the morning. as far as the squalls are concerned, they can dump to an inch, and we picked up about an

inch, the kurn here is that any snow skaul this evening, temperatures are below freezing, any wet spots or snowy spots on the roads will refreeze. coming up we'll time out the threat for snow tomorrow. we'll tell you which areas are most likely to see it. >> all right, kate, thank you. a community gathers to remember two sisters killed in a deadly hit and run crash. the driver is behind bars tonight charged with vehicular homicide. o >> reporter: gut-wrenching grief from the mother of two young girls who lost their lives drying to cross roosevelt boulevard saturday night. friends and family members returned to the scene with heavy

hearts. >> it's really painful and hurtful that we've got to do this. my daughters was my life. i live for them. i did everything for them. >> reporter: police say the 10 and 19-year-old girls were in the crosswalk at about 11:40 p.m. a speeding car swerved into the left lane trying to beat the changing light and hit both sisters. the impact so violent they were knocked 150 to the driver never stopped. >> the purpose of my sister because of all the gunfire and come down here thinking it's a good neighborhood and have their life taken from somebody so careless and reckless. >> police later caught up with

the driver where he was arrested. we understand the family had just moved into this neighborhood just a couple of weeks ago. meantime the driver has been charged with homicide by vehicle and two counts of invaltory man slaughter. >> the man here started shooting last night during prayers in quebec city. six people were killed and more than a dozen more injured. canada's prime minister is calling the shooting an act of terrorism. as a result philadelphia police are increasing security surrounding local mosques. >> any time we see something like this happen around the

world or even if it's something that happens here in the united states, we would beef up security and look at those type of locations that could be potential targets. >> police say 39 others inside the mosque were not hurt during the shooting. investigators say the mans with known by those who monitor extremist groups. >> a north jersey pastor is punched an knocked to the ground in front of his congregation. he was celebrating mass on saturday in the mid fl mass a man stepped out of a pew and took a swing at the bush op and knocking him to the ground. >> as a former altar boy a lot of people thought he might be part of the mass. i thought it was odd and when he walked up and hit the man in the face people were

the boy scouts will begin accepting transgender boys. the organization had previously held a policy that relied on the gender listed on a child's birth certificate. a spokeswoman for the boy scouts said it made the decision based on states and communities changing how gender is defined. a transgender child in secaucus new jersey was asked last year to leave his troop after parents found out he is transgender. he's been allowed back into the boy scouts. a new toid reveals who young girls see when they think of girls who are brilliant. >> surprisingly they don't see

themselves. >> this is an interesting one. the study looked at the responses of 400 children between the ages of 5 and 7 in a variety of scenarios and found that gender biases can affect children at very young ages. when you think of someone really, really smart, who do you see? if you're a 6-year-old girl, chances are the opposite sex. >> wow, that's insane. >> it's definitely discouraging. >> i remember that from my own upbringing. >> reporter: new research found at age 5 girls see themselves as being just as capable as their male counterparts but by 6 they associate brilliance more often with boys. >> that's sad. >> you didn't think that when you were 6. >> reporter: researchers believe a turning point comes when girls enter school absorbing more social stereotypes from the media, peers, parents and teachers. >> men that we study in textbooks, based on who you see

in power, who you see in businesses. >> has something to do with doll babies and putting the girls in kitchen sets. >> build up that can accumulate. >> reporter: a psychology professor at new york university co-authored the study which also found these perceptions can impact interests, even alter career paths. >> yuck men and women will end up with a fairly different set of expertise and knowledge and interest. >> reporter: researchers contend it's why women are underrepresented. so how can we do better? >> just promote equality. >> just the choices we make, how we discipline. how we go toy shopping. >> we need the spice girls to talk about girl power again. >> whatever works. now we should mention that while 6 to 7-year-old girls are more likely to identify a brilliant character as a man and lose

interest in board games described as being for really smart kids, they continue to associate with girls getting good grades. their perception of brilliance isn't based on academic performance and i find that even more troubling, even though they get good grades, they're still not seeing themselves in that way. >> it's a problem. >> thanks, nicole. >> a female bobcat escaped from the national zoo in washington, d.c. ollie a 25 pound bobcat was last seen around 7:30 this morning. she was no where to be found. the zoo says bobcats are not known to be aggressive towards humans. officials believe she may return to her familiar grounds for food and shelter. we hear about the benefits of swad ling babies, but it turns out adults may like it too. >> it's called adult wrapping and it's offered in tokyo. patients take turns tying each other up in a large cloth from

head to toe while in a cross-legged position. they sway from side to side or lay gently on their backs to losen up the muscles and their bones. the therapy is popular with new moms over there. >> it looks different. >> they're all squeezed in there. >> i would be stuck in that position for weeks. >> it was wild out there. >> this morning it was mainly down the shore and through the afternoon everybody got their chance. we had these bursts of snow that came through and a lot of us have been left with snow on the ground here tonight and that's a problem because temperatures are now below freezing and we're seeing a lot of 20s out there tonight. meaning any snow-covered roads, back roads, things like that from this evening's snow squalls may get icy tonight so watch out as you step out tomorrow morning. let's take a look outside, one spot that can get slippery the ocean city boardwalk. it's completely snow covered. temperatures are below freezing

that is going to be slippery. any untreated surface will be dealing with the threat for a little bit of ice into tomorrow morning. ocean city did pick up snow this morning and then another round with say squall this afternoon. storm scan 3 shows the squalls have dissipated. as we widen out we've got our next system to watch. this is coming in from the west producing some decent snow here from portions of mitch into eastern ohio. for us in philadelphia don't get too excited. it looks like most of this is going to miss us to the north and we're probably not going see much of anything as far as any accumulating snow certainly, and not much in the way of falling snow tomorrow. right now 30 degrees in philadelphia, 27 in millville, 19 in mount pocono. it's chilly out there. definitely cold enough for everything to refreeze but notice tomorrow morning we start to see that snow move in 8:00 a.m. but it's mainly off to the north. if you're in allentown, right up toward the poconos you will see light snow in the morning, that pushes to the north and it moves

out of the lehigh valley by mid morning. most of today will actually be partly to mostly sunny. in the afternoon you can see scattered rain and snow showers mainly from the city on north. mainly in the afternoon tomorrow, the chance for a few scattered rain and snow showers, light in intensity, little or no accumulation and there's a chance the majority of our region doesn't see any precipitation tomorrow. if you're looking for accumulating snow you've got to go to the poconos where 1-3 inches could fall. then as we head into the start of february, we're going to get progressively colder. you're going to see this big batch of arctic air pushing the jet stream south ward. the coldest looks to be on saturday where temperatures will struggle to get above freezing. tonight we drop down to 26 degrees, variable cloudiness. tomorrow clouds and sun and watch for those scattered light rain and snow showers in the afternoon. they're not everywhere, not a big deal but if you're traveling in one tomorrow afternoon it can

drop the visibility quickly. wednesday 46 as february begins and then it starts to get colder from there. not speaking for phil, but it definitely does feel like winter is going to stick around. a chance for a little snow on sunday. as of now it looks like a little snow. >> keep an eye on phil. >> i love the graphic. >> don is up next with sports. >> we are talking hoops tonight.
