4:01 am
they are all finding something different. we have rain in the city. mixing starting to take place, which trang and joe have have plenty of snow. the region is split in half right now, with that dividing line of the rain and hint of ice ago long with it. the snow is already coming down, rain as well, i have a good clip, so even though, initially the roads will handle will this well, where it is snowing, you will start to see this accumulate quickly here's how impact time out, heavy wet snow right through rest of the morning so if you have to head out, you need to plan for that ape hit the road as soon as you can here, meanwhile, later tonight p.m. rush you are not without issue either road will likely re freeze, even after the hows have have come through and so that will lead to a different set of problems. again, p.m. rush no picnic here. the wind also, starting to whip as day goes on with gusts as high as 30 miles an hour and that certainly can lead to its own set of discomfort but
4:02 am
major travel slow downs, even right the through tomorrow morning, with lingering ice concerns. we are in the middle of the worst right now, folks, 42 is still current temperature in philadelphia which is why you are fining rain but note that is sharp contrast, you're down near or below freezing hashing already in the far northwestern suburbs. so cold air is catching up to us and give it the a couple hours, everyone will eventually, see some snow. more mix down the shore so not as much of terms in snow fall totals but that snow will come down heavily for next couple of hours. as a result, of course it will accumulate heavily. i will show everybody, later on our updated snowfall map to give you a sense how much you have to shovel way. >> no escaping now. all right, katie, everyone pack your patient this is morning because we are going to need it and leave, your homes, early. because not only is there going to be busy but you have to take it very, very slow. this is a live look at right now katie was just talking
4:03 am
about this. we have a mixed bag depending where you are, 95 south at cottman we are eag it the look very wet coming around s curve schuylkill in the eastbound direction at syringe garden same story here just looking very wet. things are changing. we know that but right now just looking wet, you can see droplets and how wet roadways are. it is 4:00 o'clock this is morning and we are seeing your neighbors already. we will do a split screen and show you two different areas. king of prussia area, we will show you spring house at 309 near norristown, both areas, king of prussia, 202, henderson road and both camera shots looking very, very wet. the as soon as we see heavy snow falling we will show you those camera shots as well. for now what we are seeing the bulk on have the cameras we have been seeing right the now is just a lot of wetness. we have vehicle will fire in bala cynwyd and we will talk about that in 10 minutes. jim, over to you. anticipation of the significant snowfall philadelphia public and archdiocese, schools will be
4:04 am
closed. philadelphia government offices will be opened, during normal business hours, and over this delaware city of newark will operate on a two hour delay, city offices will open up at 10:30. in new jersey camden county offices will be closed to day and allstate offices will be closed for non-essential employees. more than 200 other closings and delays are in effect this morning. check the full list on cbs philly.com or cbs local app where we're scrolling them at bottom of the screen as well. well, snow emergency went in effect at philadelphia at midnight and city and earned ising areas are preparing for snowfall we have seen all season. >> our live team coverage continues in white hall township outside allentown where trang do tells us we can e in your shot natalie snow appears to becoming down. >> reporter: oh, yeah, rahel i was hoping you would come sooner because i'm telling you biggest monster truck just drove through here seconds ago hoping we can have those kinds of tires on our trucks but you
4:05 am
can see it is coming down quickly here and it is, very fine these snowflakes they are not light and fluffy like snowfall we saw last month, and you can really hear them when they hit the surface. very icy. take a look over here on top of our truck here just really fine and same time very icy, very slushy, and as we experienced on our way up here , as we were leaving philadelphia and really rain and as it the came closer to quakertown it became a wintry mix and new here outside allentown definitely snow but it made for some pretty treacherous driving conditions as we mentioned, penndot did not treat roads last night, because of the storm starting out as rain rather. so that would have just completely washed off all of the treatment so they are definitely out. we were on 476 north past a number of snowplows just
4:06 am
waiting in place for this event to happen so even here we have seen a number of also private snowplows out here, so , lots of preparation here in the lehigh valley, in allentown they actually started collecting trash the day, around 10:00 o'clock last night so that they could help clear up these roads here. but yeah, guys i mean you can see it the is very pretty out here, really coming down, i have only been out here a couple minutes now and i'm pretty much covered. that is situation here now back to you guys in the studio >> pretty but not necessarily best to drive-in, trang. city of philadelphia is preparing for today's expected winter storm. >> lets see how things are shaping up, our pat gallen is at penndot salt yard in bride berg and what does it look like where you are, pat. >> reporter: it looks like rain. i wish it looked like what is going on with trang, it looks nice, fun. we have a little bit of accumulation, this is just mud because it has been raining so
4:07 am
hard last couple of hours, it is all muddy out here but looking behind me at salt yard in brideberg they are not doing anything as trang mentioned they did not salt overnight because the rain would have washed it away, so this guy just hanging out, waiting, hoping, wishing that he can get something in today. couple trucks came through here little while ago but it appears that they are not salting, and when i woke up to a text from our executive producer steve lindsey. it said 48 degrees. i'm thinking 48 degrees all we will get is rainy like to have fun in the snow i'm a big kiddy look older then that but i'm a big kid when it comes to the snow. so 48 degrees doesn't seem like a recipe for success when it comes to snow but there is no one i trust more than katie fehlinger. she said it will snow here in minutes. temperature is dropping by the minute too as i came in the office around 3:00 a.m. you could feel temperature dropping. really minute by minute. it appears here it will be starting as you can see rain
4:08 am
right now but the snow is on its way so i would like to put out a call for some help, what we should be doing today as snow hits us we will be running around northeast philadelphia today. hit me up on my twitter page at the pennsylvania path gallon at cbs-3, where should we go what should we do when the snow accumulates guys. you know me i like to have a little fun. when it does snowy know it can be dangerous on the roadways so obviously use caution out driving, schools are closed which is good. that being said, when snow starts to fall i want to hang out with the great people of northeast philadelphia. put the call out where should we go what can we do can i get a breakfast sandwich somewhere , some of that stuff. >> call out peeps. >> creative requests, path the path be careful what you wish for. >> that is what i'm looking for. >> thanks, patrick. camden county resident were making sure they are ready for wintry weather with the trip to the supermarket. you have to make that french toast. besides gas market attendants
4:09 am
topping off tanks to be sure, in lindenwald crew where is getting a head start by loading up salt trucks and getting ready for a busy morning. new jersey transit emergency operation center is in operation, as the storm approaches. delaware is also getting ready for snow, delldot says their crews will be plowing primary roads and transit routes and once they clear those they will move to secondary roads. they are reminding drivers to take your time, slow down and give your snowplows plenty of space. penndot is reminding people if they must travel, to be careful on the roads, drivers should avoid using cruise control, tailgating and also increase their following distance, to eight to 10 seconds. drivers need to be cautious around operating snow equipment and never try to pass a plow truck. food, water and first aid supplies are highly recommend ed, estimate six car lengths behind car snowplows is something to keep in mind. >> when in doubt throttle out. >> we are still trying to figure out what that means. >> drive to work in the
4:10 am
snowmobile. our coverage of the this morning's winter weather continues. >> lets take a live look outside it does look like this is chester delaware county it looks like the road are still wet but as we cane. >> it is coming. >> it looks like it is coming. coming up we will check with katie for update on the complete forecast when we come right back.
4:11 am
4:12 am
welcome back. snow is on the way and we are getting ready to welcome most
4:13 am
anticipated winter storm of the season. >> joe holden is live in montgomery county, good morning, joe how are things looking there. >> reporter: jim, rahel, good morning to you. it is raining out here. it is a cold rain. i just checked the thermometer , in the car it is 39 degrees here right now but i have this cbs-3 weather app up on my phone and what is interesting is the shades of blue that are now filling in, that blue dot in the center is where i am right here, on route 202 dekalb pike here, some people call it centre square we are calling it blew bell this morning but it is whitpain township and pat gallen mentioned that this morning our executive producer steve lindsey texting him that it was 48 degrees, perhaps a question mark about how this might all materialized now. it was 41 on my way in from havertown and making my way up here. thermometer again is now showing 39 and what is interesting is within the last hour, boy it was raining heavy
4:14 am
, it is still raining right now but every once in a while with the windshield you hear a small crunch, crack he will, perhaps showing that precipitation is now beginning to change over but from what i see on my phone here it is that at least from this view on the cbs-3 weather app those shades of blue are now filling in, the rain is somewhat almost letting up at this point so perhaps, within the next half an hour or so, we will begin to see a change over here, in blue bell. live in blue bell i'm joe holden for cps3 "eyewitness news". >> coming your way, joe, copping your way. 4:14. it the will be there. katie promises, it is coming. >> time 4:14. >> let's check with katie for an update on the forecast. we heard what joe just said 40 s dropping, apparently the snow is coming. >> you said 5:00 o'clock, i listened to you, i know you
4:15 am
think i'm in la la land. >> you and he come from the same cloth and i know you listen to the fine details. i know my collogues trust he so i appreciate that but take a look you can see we said two to 5:00 a.m. this is panning out right now. rain, snow, sleet to arrive. we have the whole mixed bag he we promised you but it has not turned over yet let alone precipitating in every location yet. it will happen, if you haven't seen anything yet give it time and trust me on this one, okay , the snow is coming down heavily right now even though it may not have turned over at ground level there is very cold air working its way through the entire column of the atmosphere and eventually that cold is going to win the battle every where. now the storm itself there is a back edge so this will be rotating through over our area and with the heavy banning we are expecting out of this, impressive rising air will end up with significant snowfalls
4:16 am
over the course of each hour. there may be one to 2 inches that fall. you can understand is there a winter storm warning posted in all of these counties in pink, winter weather advisory through cumberland, atlantic and cape may county as well as kent and sussex where we will have more mix take place but we have not made any adjustments to or expectations when it comes to snowfall. perhaps, perhaps, the northern branch here where we have eight to 12 you may end up on the lower end of that but you will still get a piling snowfall in these northern counties here. i still expect four to eight around greater philadelphia area up and down i-95. it will be a mess. two to 4 inches further south more like a coating to two down through those locations that we mentioned, will have more mixing take lays. but with that said there are other impacts that will impact us here today and that comes in the form of wind. we will send things out to meteorologist lauren casey on the the skies deck hunkering
4:17 am
down, it looks like. >> i'm saying it is pretty miserable already and unfortunately it is only going to get more miserable, right now, dealing with the light rain tall, kind of a chunky rain. there is a few sleet pellets mixed in right now. certainly temperatures are dropping. it does not feel so great. the as we head in the second half of the day wind will start to whip especially in points south of philadelphia, we have a wind advisory in philadelphia counties, counties south and east stretching into south jersey and shore, delaware beaches, gusts to 50 miles an hour, we will see some highest wind gust as long our shore point so future wind gusts showing us south of the sit a cross portions of delaware those wind starting to whip as soon as the 9:00 o'clock hour as we head into lunchtime. pack that sandwich you will not want to be out and b wind gusts picking up to 30 to 40 miles an hour long i-95 corridor. shade of purple that is indicating 50 miles an hour wind gusts for portions of
4:18 am
southern new jersey, the shore and delaware beaches as we head into your commute hours and even early tomorrow morning wind are going to let up around 95 but down the shore still dealing with whipping wind to kick things off on a friday morning. so storm impact we have all of them today high burst of snowfall, wind highest specially after snow starts to subside and as we head in the midday after afternoon. icing potentially localized moderate impacts on the commute. tough one. we will see wind increasing and, temperatures, dropping as we head in the second half of the day. is there arctic air mass and feels like temperatures will be brutal all throughout the day-to-day. generally in the teens for most areas as we head into your commute, dropping sub zero in the poconos, single digits in the lehigh valley and check that out as we head into tomorrow morning feeling like 10 degrees in philadelphia, so dealing with the snow, and wind today and then tomorrow a cold arctic day, friday your high temperature meisha only near
4:19 am
30 degrees. so it will be a tough go over next 48 hours. >> you know lauren, sometimes snow can be so much fun but not during a morning commute, it does not what we want not during morning, evening, at all, so you have the day off lucky you. a lot of us don't what does that mean? we will have to leave our homes early because we will be driving very, very slow. a lot of the areas we are looking at right now is primarily rain but it is starting to switch. this is syringe garden and broad right outside and you can see how wet and slick it is looking. nice thing it is also looking like there is not very many vehicles out there. to you cannot head out thousand you will be in great company because we know it will be very busy. then this is one of our northern most cameras in doylestown 611 at limekiln pike, we saw snow but in doylestown it is still also looking very, very wet here. it is looking like there is not many vehicles here. where we are starting to pick up, and just looking very wet right the now is new jersey 42 tree way north bound at creek
4:20 am
road. we are looking good. just thinking of heading out on 42, do so now before the snow comes, and while we only have traffic levels that look like this we have a disable vehicle, before passyunk, it is blocking right lane and that will slow you down ever so slightly but still in good company but i will say schuylkill is starting to slow down ever so slightly. we have a vehicle fire involving injuries in bala cynwyd rock hill road at conshohocken state road head up, one of the problems that will start to really kind of slow us down when this snow starts to fall, rahel, back to you. >> well, fortunately there are no injuries and service delays after an overnight fire at 59th street terminal in upper darby. septa officials say there was debris near the third rails. train entering the station hade contact with the rail and that spark the fire, fire did not went to the train and crew s had situation under control a short time later. police say a naked man was under the influence when he stole a cab and drove in the crowded rittenhouse square
4:21 am
sidewalk monday afternoon. take a look viewer video shows the frightening scene and hear that screeching as well as they tore around the square and crashed. eyewitnesses say 51 year-old jonathan gay until police arrived. it started when gay pulled a woman out of the cab near 20th and locust. driver and eyewitness intervened, men then jumped in and took off. cabdriver and that woman are now okay. well our coverage of the morning's winter weather continues. >> lets take a live look outside from bethlehem you can see, what is white stuff coming down. >> we will be right back.

4:25 am
hasn't already as cold air works its way in very rapidly through delaware and new jersey you are mainly looking at southern most counties at rain/sleet mix but there will be snow on the back side as very cold air works its way back in. we are calling for heavy wet snow here in the order of the city of four to 8 inches, higher amounts to the north and it will be heavy wet variety that cling toss branches and power lines. because now we will expect to see these wind pick up quickly late this morning at earliest you could end up with maybe a couple power outages. the that is something to watch in the heavier band where we have best banding there could be one to 2-inch rates per hour and there may as a result of that some thunder snow. you heard couple claps of thunder don't be shocked. this is a sit asian where it is possible. the chill really settles in later tonight down to 15 degrees so there could a major refreezing issue into tomorrow morning's drive. even though storm, meisha, may have left by later today the problems will continue well into tommied's say.
