>> good advice, thanks. lets check with "eyewitness news" reporter joe holden live in montgomery county. >> joe, you were there as rain quickly turned to snow about an hour ago, what are things looking like now this blue bell. >> reporter: when that change over happened we were questioning how could the snow just accumulate on such, you know, wet surfacees, factor in that temperature drop and we have an this much and a half of snow here in blue bell. what is interesting to notice the speed limits on dekalb pike here, pen to the has reduced them with a whole string of other highways but it appears that traffic is moving along at just a regular pace. we have seen lots of suv's out there but car going by right there, easy guess that car has to be going 30 miles an hour. we saw pen to the go by, in plows down just yet they are in salt mode. they were salting route 202 here to give you an idea saint helen's this way and

welcome back to cbs-3 "eyewitness news" and our coverage of the winter storm. >> you want to be careful out there as snow, slippery conditions, culled make travel trick toy day. our pat gallen is live in the far northeast with the situation near philadelphia mills or as path the path would say franklin mills mall. hi there, pat. >> yeah, come on everyone knows it as franklin mills mall it is not philadelphia mills. we are right across the street from there woodhaven and knights road and i'll be honest with you people you see right the here are going at a slow rate which is good but we have seen people threw here, and that is not good because there is a, it is almost like crystal icing here with the sleet thousand finally turning over to snow here this

northeast philadelphia but just walking out here this is untreated surface on the sidewalks is a little treacherous so you can imagine roadways which penndot says they did in the treat because of the rain previously this morning. so that means there will be slick conditions, so, right here where we are standing it is slick as well. so far, not pad, the changeover is happening, and i'm kind of upset. i got shortened of the stick, we have got snow north and west of the city, joe holden is seeing accumulating snow this blue bell we are not seeing that quite yet here. we will move around here in northeast philadelphia check the conditions as they start to change over but not fun. i have my sled ready, i had high shovel ready. i was ready for some football in the snow. i was going to start to find friend. i can't find that. we have a dunkin' donuts thereby but this isn't fun snowstorm i thought i was going to get, trang got it but it will start to happen in northeast philadelphia we will update you on conditions in

chestnut hill where it has turned over in the last 15 minutes to a heavy snow and continue to see that heavy snow falling tar off to the north. heaviest banding right now right over philadelphia. i think it is just minutes at this point, pat before you will start to see this turn over. it is still heavy rain, notice lightening strikes em embedded here. line of thunderstorms at shore points but every where we will see that rain/snow line dropping through with time as we put it into motion. you coon see rotation in the back edge of this, drawing the cold air in, drawing moisture in and we are still expecting a pretty good swab of snow which lauren casey will get to just right after my hit here. so stick around for that. in the meantime, other things to consider here even though road initially where you have not quite seen that really heavy snow accumulate responding well to this, you have got the to keep in mind it is a heavy wet snow that is out there. so it will cling to branches,

power lines and then we will get wind going and that could potentially lead to power outages and piling up of that snow once it gets underway a. we have had 1 inch per hour band reported, possibly still lauren, still up to 2 inches in spots. so yeah it looks like this forecast will verify pretty well, wouldn't you say. >> i would say so because it is officially snowing in center city philadelphia. we have huge flakes. still sleet mixed in right now very wet snow but we have slush accumulation already on the cbs-3 sky deck. as we head throughout the day we will see that accumulation. we will see wind that are going to start to whip add to go that misery, wind advisory for philadelphia county and points south and east extending down the shore. we will have have wind gusts possible of 50 miles an hour, wind advisory from noon this will 6:00 p.m. future wind gusts as early as 8:00 o'clock hour, with gusting to 40 miles an hour long the coast and then those wind whipping to near 50 miles an hour at shore points.

gusting to possibly 40 to 45 miles an hour along i-95 corridor. for your commute home, yeah, hopefully you can just stay at home and don't have to be outside on the roads because wind will be whipping in the 5:00 o'clock hour and still gusting wind along shore points, into the late evening. it will be brutal. heavier snow. snow covered roadways, windy conditions, ice, snow covered road for your p.m. commute and then travel troubles all across the northeast not just for us so if you have had travel lance, we will have tough sots especially up toward new york city and boston. the blizzard warning in effect for parts of the long island where they are expecting over a foot of snow. >> yikes, lauren. this is one of the mornings where we immediately say just don't go out there and go outside. anything we look at will be a mess. i will pull your attention to camera shots, where we have 309 taillights moving in the northbound treks, accident pulled off to the shoulder.

we have a second accident blocking right lane before the pennsylvania turnpike. what is odd and even somewhat erie about this when we were looking at this 20 minutes ago it was bumper to bumper. it almost seems like it is lessened congestion levels a little bit. it is because they are getting word. we say go home, take a day off , stay home if at all possible. you will want to. you will sit in your car for a long time. 309, two accidents out there but we are looking okay in terms of the congestion levels we have another accident here involving injuries eagleville, germantown pike westbound near g therange avenue head up. we have another accident, this one is the tire is vehicle will fire e ms on the scene, this is in souderton schoolhouse road at forman road. use an alternate. allentown road is your best bet. you will absolutely slow down in that area. also, speed restriction this is lay 45 miles an hour in hose highways and bridges down to 25 miles an hour here, absolutely give yourself more

go anywhere cbs-3 "eyewitness news" will welcome to your health with joan lunden presented by the centers for disease control and prevention. hi. i'm joan lunden. diabetes is a major health issue in the united states. i am joined by stephanie creel, associate director of communications for cdc's division of diabetes translation to talk about the national pre-diabetes communication campaign. it's good to have you here. >> thank you. >> i think people will be really surprised when you talk about these numbers. how pervasive is pre-diabetes and diabetes in our country? >> the numbers are very surprising. 86 million american adults have prediabetes and 90% of them don't even know they have it.

that's on top of the 29 million americans who already have diabetes and one in four of those people don't know they have it. >> those numbers are kind of startling but i think what is more startling is the fact that so many people don't know they're at risk. what's the cdc doing to try to combat this? >> we are trying to help get the information to the people who need it most. in january 2016 we launched the first ever pre-diabetes awareness campaign with partners at the american medical association, american diabetes association, ad council to get the information in people's hands about how they can find out their risk. >> has it been working? how effective. >> we have had impressive engagement. we use humor, have he relate able. people are going on line to take the risk test to find out if they have prediabetes. >> that's a simple test. everybody has the time to do it. >> that's right. >> if the numbers are high on the test, then you get a blood

sugar test. what they find out those are high. how do you help? >> cdc has the national diabetes prevention program where people can enroll in the program and find real life solutions to help them in their own world. >> it's a terrific program and it's been proven that it really works. right now we've got to get the word out. that means you need to talk to your family and friends about it and you need to find out if you are at risk. go to cdc.gov/diabetestv. thanks for watching. i'm joan

>> yes, inn keyed. >> you will be on the the treadmill later for 12 miles, how about that. >> yes. >> i'm not training for a marathon i can sit back here and run on adrenaline with the snowstorm. lets look at snowfall totals we have seen so tar, i actually got a new report, we didn't have time to refresh the graphic but in east nant heel, and over an hour they have had one and a half inches fall. so snowfall rates are, intense when we see these dark shade of purple showing up yeah, that is pounding down. central new jersey especially northern ocean county, monmouth counties you are getting slammed here with really heavy snow tall. some thunderstorms. looking at snapshot of the radar looking across eastern edge of ocean county where we have best uplift, we will see heaviest rain and snow coming down. lightening strikes looking closely out there just moving off shore. lets go hour by hour, future radar and temperature we are

right around freezing hashing in the next hour in philadelphia. so i have heard from you on twitter, thank you for reports , it helps on days like this eyewitness weather watchers in the the next 15we will talk to you too. send in your reports. we will see that change overtake place in philadelphia it already has in much of the city. we will continue to see that happen, there northwest to south east with every asking hour. by the time we hit eight or 9:00 most of the region will be in the middle of snow but see back edge already moving out, nine or 10:00 a.m. by lunchtime we are done with this in fail or time flakes will be falling. so we have a chance then for temperature to drop off more so and then also anything that gets plowed away to refreeze. in the meantime let me throw this at you too we have a wind advisory for northwest wind as high as 30 miles an hour sustained at higher gusts to 50, including philadelphia county and points south east of that, starts at noon time for down branches and wires and possibility of scattered power outages. meisha, the impacts are just

widespread, in that regard with a lot the to get to today >> there sure is, thank very much. and a lot of snow, coming down here, visibility issues and because of that we have seen quite a bit of accidents here this morning. one area where we had one, an accident involving tractor trailer and two vehicles. schuylkill westbound at south street was blocked and now block, it the is still wet, not only wet but the snow is starting to come down and in most areas and camera frames we are seeing and it will add so much extra time in your commute. moving in the west and eastbound direction of the schuylkill you can see how slow and we had backup shot for you, it is the backup shot not looking that bad. we will go to mass transit. this is what you need to though. subways are your best options, patco is running a special schedule between 5:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. new jersey transit system wide cross honoring right now rail services delayed, 15 minutes,

also, airport has been tweet ing out all morning long, a lot of cancellations this morning so just make sure to check your schedules on line. not to hemmings, we have speed restriction this is play so 45 whiles an hour, what you will be dealing with on most major highways and interstates. 25 miles an hour on the betsy ross and walt whitman bridge. when you add those speed restrictions on the roads that are already slow, to begin with because of congestion the snow coming town and now you add restrictions i would say, moving toward the 7:00 o'clock hour would i give yourself at least, at minimum an extra hour as you walk outside the door. we are looking at market frankford line, so again, normal operations, yes, shuttle bus services are cancelled. no a/b service. we are running normal schedule but still expect delays because of the train shortages , jim and rahel back to you. thanks, meisha. heavy snow accumulating quickly in lehigh county. >> "eyewitness news" reporter trang do is live, and you win the prize if you want to call

it a rice so far for most snow , good morning. >> reporter: good morning, rahel and jim. this snow is not the letting up here in the least high valley, here. take a look it is very fine icy snow but it is accumulating as you mentioned. we will grab this yard -- well , not yardstick but measuring stick. what we are seeing here just about 3 inches out here in just outside allen town but as we have been out here for hours temperatures dropping, significantly, i have a ton of layers here but this gentlemen i met earlier this morning did not. this man will from allentown, he had shorts on. i had to talk to him about that. he is talking about hearty stock here in pennsylvania. take a listen to him. >> it is not bothersome if you are around the area quite a

give you some visual says if you will. take a look at the gas pump at wawa in blue bell. there is a 10-foot over hang that sits under. so the snow is being whipped up and pushed under that awning there and you can see gas pump is entirely covered by snow. this stop sign is rocking in the wind. first sign of daylight here. it has been snowing for two hours. been a very steady clip. we have talk about visibility being very poor, and i spoke to a gentlemen who is out in his jeep and tells me natalie road conditions are quote horrible. we will give you an idea what people are tasting, essential employees, who have to be on the road, he is driving to take. we saw a september bus go by. everybody is on a, modified schedule because there are hundreds of school districts cancelled and we are seeing

but first meisha first for a look at traffic, meisha. >> yes, good morning you guys. i have to tell you, it is looking very busy and the snow , all the rain we saw earlier is turning into snow and causing visibility issues. before we get into accidents and what that is causing i want to show you 95 south at girard. we are looking at i-95, one of the area that will get busy. that being said, i want to say that i think a lot of people have heated warnings and stayed at home because congestion levels, as bad as they are they could be worse. we are actually looking he kay on i-95 pushing in the southbound direction. i want to show you that. we have just a string of accidents out there. but first talking about mass transit, septa subways are going to be your best option, patco, special scheduled between 5:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. new jersey transit system wide cross honoring, rail service delayed 15 minutes. major cancellations at airport , head up on that, and then see if i can go here, speed restrictions first.
