has cancer. good evening everyone, i'm natasha brown. thanks so much for joining us. the boscov family name, it has graced the side of department stores throughout the eastern united states for generations. "eyewitness news" reporter alexandria hoff paid a visit to reading pennsylvania today where the first boscov's store opened up in the early 19 hundreds. >> reporter: albert boscov liked his circular ads big and sometimes whimsical. it's one of the first ways he got his family store on the map and grew it employing over 7,000. lease sap was one of those employees. >> he knew everyone. he walked around and that is the type of man he is. >> reporter: albert known as albie passed away days after announcing his battle with pancreatic cancer. he was 87. that news brought o her to teams. the story of the nation's longest running family owned department store begins with solomon boscov a russian jewish immigrant who arrived to the u.s. in 1911 attempting

unsuccessfully to sell lemons. >> a peddler with just one dolls dollar fledge his pocket. he opened a small dry goods store in reading. this would become the site of the first boscov's. albert joined his father's business in the mid 1950's. he's credited with spearheading its rapid expansion resurrecting it from two major fires and revive respect the company from near bankruptcy in 2008. >> everybody in the community has judd him because he's loveds given back. >> reporter: his daughter wrote my dad's spirit life love and laughter will always be working to help make this world a better place n a tearful speech in 2013 the long time boscov's chair recalled a request by his father a man who dealt in lemons and inn a country that fostered lemonade. and by his statue in downtown reading, the community says thank you. >> he is reading. >> reporter: alexandria hoff

cbs "eyewitness news." >> well, also tonight police arrived just in the nick of time to save a south jersey man much officers pulled him to safety just seconds before his vehicle exploded and all of it was captured on camera. "eyewitness news" reporter cleve bryan is live in the sat center tonight. he's got more on this daring and very heroic rescue. cleve. >> reporter: natasha, the new jersey man got himself out of the suv but collapsed a few feet away and officers dragged him away from the vehicle as it exploded. >> 1012. we got to get this guy pulled out. >> reporter: with no hesitation and no time to lose. >> you're good, you're good, you're okay. first responders in titusville florida pulled a new jersey man from a burning vehicle just before what might have been a deadly explosion. >> let's go. >> reporter: police say thursday night 44-year-old philip fissel veered his rav4 off u.s. one into a concrete barrier causing it to flip several times. >> guy is in the woods. >> reporter: dashcam video shows firefighters pulling him

to safety with his leg on fire. he was airlifted to the hospital. authorities describe his injuries as serious. witnesses say it's a miracle thistle lived. >> it's unbelievable considering the car hit that, went over the barricade and was laying on its side. >> we're just extremely proud of our officers responding so quickly and saving this man's life. we've reached out to thistle and his family. so far no word if he's returned to new jersey. live in the sat center, i'm cleve bryan cbs3 "eyewitness news." >> all right, it is amazing he survived. thank you so much chief. we appreciate that. and a philadelphia police officer meantime is lucky to be alive following a frightening encounter with an suv in west philly. after police watched a ford explorer strike a parked car near 62nd and market street, officers approached the car to check for injuries and according to police, officer hollis was standing on the suv's running board trying to avoid traffic when the driver suddenly took off driving four blocks with the officer still hanging onto the car. eventually the officer was

able to jump to safety but is now suffering from injuries to his hands and legs. the suv has been impounded. no arrests have been made just yet. an update now for you on a story that we have been following since last night. cumberland county authorities have identified the man shot and killed by bridgeton police. 23-year-old darryl ftqua the officer shot the man after a foot chase. police found a gun near the victim but they have not said why they were chasing him or if he fired a shot at them. and dam family and friends attended the funeral for a delaware correctional officer killed during a prison standoff. lieutenant steven floyd was remembered at delaware state university.'s memorial hall in dover today. he died during the inmate uprising at the james t. vaughn correctional center in smyrna last week. on tuesday, governor john carney will announce his selection to lead an independent investigation into

that 20 hour standoff. authorities have ruled the october death of a 17-year-old boy at wordsworth academy as a homicide. the now shuttered private school in that wynnefield heights had educated children with special needs. investigators say david hess was restrained, punched by school staffers and could not breathe. they say the student was suspected of stealing an ipod and became very aggressive. the district attorney's office will determine whether charges will be filed in this case. president trump is playing the game of golf diplomacy with japan's prime minister this weekend. the president and shinzo abe played golf at the trump club in jupiter florida today. the two leaders are discussing trade china and other foreign policy issues as well. meanwhile first lady melania trump and the abe's wife toured a japanese garden and museum in del ray beach. this is mrs. trump's first solo public appearance as first lady.

>> and rallies are being held all around the country today against planned parenthood. anti-a be portion activists are calling for the federal government to cut off payments to planned parenthood. but in some cities counter protests have dwarved demonstrations. federal dollars do not pay for abortions but the organization is reimbursed by medicaid for other services like birth control and cancer screenings. and comedian and new jersey native joe piscopo say he's seriously thinking about a run for new jersey governor. piscopo tells cnn he's in the early stages of a possible campaign. >> put your seat belt on but i'm doing my due diligence because the people in new jersey are ticked off and it's my home state that i have immense love form you know how much i love the state man and we're all a great community. >> piscopo is an independent. new jersey governor chris christie's final term ends early next year. the first half of our weekend isn't too bad but lauren, we may need our umbrellas.

the recall includes off the block shredded fine cut cheddar jack and colby jack cheeses, sliced colby jack cheese and sliced pepper jack cheese as well. delaware's punkin' chunkin' competition will be returning this fall following an accident at the annual punkin' chunkin' event last year. a woman was critically injured by a piece of metal when an air cannon trap door ripped off the machine while firing. organizers say the punkin' chunkin' will be held the weekend of november 3rd. take a look here. wild winds out in why why. watcwyoming.the rig landed on ta police car. no officers were in the car thank goodness. winds were gusting to about 70 miles an hour at that particular time. that's unbelievable. >> power of mother nature. >> that's scary. >> yeah. >> crazy winds out there in wyoming but i was happy to see a glimmer of sun today. >> yeah, it was a nice day today. >> just a littlely.

>> a nice winter we had and highs in the middle 50's today. >> yeah, it was nice. >> it was nice but things aren't going to be so nice especially across northwestern parts of the area tomorrow. >> oh, okay. >> but today was all right. seize the moment. topped off in the middle 50's today in philadelphia, 56 in wilmington, we had some highs in the 40's in the lehigh valley and got close to that 60-degree mark in ac. center city philadelphia 47 degrees, winds out of the east feeling more like 44 degrees and we've fallen back into the 30's in the poconos, some low 40's in allentown. still up at 51 degrees right now in wilmington on 51 in dover. storm scan3 showing us some patchy clouds around but otherwise some clear sky conditions across portions of berks coi county but the cloud deck will be increasing for the entire area as we head throughout the overnight period and overcast conditions expected for our sunday so hopefully you took in some of that sunshine today. periods of rain especially steady in the morning some heavy at times and areas of dense fog reducing

visibilities and we have this winter weather advisory in effect for berks county upper bucks lehigh valley and poconos. it it kicks in for the poconos tonight and the rest of the area as we head throughout sunday and areas shaded in purple expecting an icy sunday into these areas, poconos f-lehigh county, berks county upper bucks expectly freezing rain possibly mixing with snow and sleet. we could see local ice accumulations of potentially a quarter of an inch or more. this could be a problem if we see some of these higher ice amounts especially as we head into tomorrow night because the winds will pick up. the combination of ice accumulation and winds could yield possible power outages so plan for that just in case if you are in these areas as we head into sunday night so get your preparations ready tomorrow. future weather showing us clouds as we head into the overnight period. some areas of light rain starting to develop and then more uniform in nature as we head into tomorrow morning, so even kind of a soggy start along the i-95 corridor. this is 6:00 a.m. on sunday. notice this widespread area of

pink shading from berks county into lehigh county and up into the poconos and then it continues, time rolling on 9 o'clock in the morning, this model is a little bit more aggressive with those ice accumulations. you can see extending that freezing rain time frame all the way into midday and the into the afternoon hours in portions of the poconos. we'll see the steadiest rain in philadelphia, south jersey and down the shore in the morning tomorrow, then starting to taper a little bit as we head into the afternoon. and in these areas to the far northwest we could see this events ending as some snow fall but again the main concern is going to be that icing and as we head into monday morning conditions clearing out but yes some of these models giving us significant icing projections. this might be on the lower end as we look up towards the carbon and monroe county tomorrow. check out some of these numbers. we could see upwards of a quarter inch maybe more than that locally in some areas and then we could see some snow accumulation on the end of this, this is through the day

on sunday especially in those higher elevations. but big temperature gradient that's going to cause the icy problem tomorrow, highs only climb into the 30's and to near freezing in these areas of concern along the i-95 corridor. we'll likely climb up into the 40's in philadelphia. we may not make it if some of this warmer air doesn't make its way as for northbound as one model is projecting. across parts of delaware will have highs in the 50's in central delaware and 60's southern delaware tomorrow. but overnight tonight cloudy conditions, adversary rain developing with a low of 40 degrees and then for the day tomorrow highs in the middle 40's, steady rain damp with fog and then watching out nor freezing rain threat through the day tomorrow in the poconos, just straight up rain down the shore with temperatures not too bad near 50 degrees and then on monday strong gusty winds all across the area. we could even see wind gusts to near 50 miles per hour in the city and then things quiet down tremendously for you and your sweetheart on tuesday.

the 50 greatest players in nba history. we're about a month away from march madness. today the ncaa men's selection committee did something for the first time they gave us a sneak peek at the bank. if the tournament started today the villanova wildcats would be the number one over all seed. this afternoon they took on xavier. jay wright going for his 500th career win as head coach. second half cats in control, brunson drivers down in the paint and scores. cats by 13 and brunson scoring 17 points. next possession josh hart drives out to dante divincenzo who knocks down the jumper. later on hart drives and scores. not much defense there. hart with 11 points seven boards five assists. jay wright gets win number 500, 73-57 the final. saint joe's hosting u mass. hawks really needed to win this game. charlie brown from downtown. >> welcome back. runners layer up and lace up their sneakers for a great cause. more than 200 people ran in the ninth annual cupid chase 5k run at the philadelphia zoo. every year across the nation this run raises money to help provide housing and employment support for people with disabilities. last year runners raised more than $700,000 from this event.
