"eyewitness news" reporter joe holden joins us from ninth street in south philadelphia with more on the impact and message behind the strike, joe , good evening. >> reporter: good evening. there is certainly impact dozens of businesses, restaurants, establishments across philadelphia are closed to take, just have a look down south ninth street here and you can see all of the shutters are down and there are signs on a lot of the doors, explaining why, of course, this stretch of sidewalk and this street will normally be bustling with activity. not the today. we found people advised by the move caught off guard when they tried to do a little shopping. we also spoke with business owners, putting all of that together for "eyewitness news" at 6:00. we also stopped by a water small gathering on thomas payn e plaza in center city where two students from maste ry charter school from south philadelphia's campus said they stayed home from school today. their parents are immigrant from cambodia.

had cases and eight have not been approved. many student say they followed rules all their lives but this may be taking things just too far. >> i approve catholic school but this is not right. >> reporter: night to remember is turning into a nightmare according to students and parents at archbishop ryan high school. due to the dress code policy for junior/senior promised which reportedly requires students and their dates to get the a tire approved by the administration before they can buy a ticket. >> it is not acceptable for my daughter why do i need somebody else telling me yes or to it is not. >> reporter: several student sent us these example office dresses denied by administration. school officials told one student this dress would be accepted when she sewed up the neck line. that is why senior nick paulin i wrote a letter raising student's concerns. so far, at least 650 students have also signed a petition objecting to the fee hail dress code, calling it degrading, arbitrary and unfair. >> i do think natalie rahm dress code should be, maybe

changed but i don't think a petition was the best way to go about it. >> reporter: others like, this woman said they are concerned natalie photos must be sent to a specified e-mail account for approval. >> what happens to it after the fact? who has access to this. >> reporter: in response the spokesmen for archdiocese told "eyewitness news" the photos are reviewed by two female administrators and one male and deleted after prom to make sure natalie students show up in the a profit dress. the statement says as their high schools are catholic they seek to have holistic christian formation of the young men and women spiritual ly academically and socially. intention of the policies is to ensure modcy and dress at this social function which is school sponsored. now school officials say that they reminded students and parents of the dress code policy, back in october, well, head of the prom trust shopping season. still many upset students have contacted me, and today all of them backed out of interviews out of fear of expulsion or fear of other repercussions.

flames in yeadon earlier today "eyewitness news" at will hundred block of cyril avenue where authorities say that a kitchen fire broke out shortly before is 11:30 this morning. as fire fighters battled the flames they shut down the run dale avenue for safety precautions no one was hurt. fast moving fire in the grace fell i section send five people to the hospital, including three children. the fire broke out just after 5:00 o'clock this morning on the 1500 block of south eding street. the people who lived in the house were able to escape but at least one man suffered burns, three children who live in the neighborhood were then to children's hospital due to smoke that will lacing. the cause of the fire is not yet known. driver in cape may new jersey loses control and plows into a house, injuring a little boy inside. this is viewer video of the aftermath. the crash happened around 8:30 this morning on the 2600 block of bay shore road. the eyewitness on the scene says an 11 year-old boy was struck by the car who came flying through the wall. birth we're told lost a tooth

there across the area this afternoon. that is what that cold air moving from the north and west you can see across most of the region everything is quiet, just a few scattered flurries, and snow showers as that cold air is coming in. but there is a big change, lurking just off to the the south and west, and that is nice evening for a walk on the beach. beach patrol headquarters in margate looks like a nice sunset. it the is on the other side but still looking good as we get the reflection here looking out over the horizon, tonight, and then temperatures right now 37 degrees, in philadelphia, it is 37 in wilmington. thirty-three in reading. twenty-two in mount pocono. it feels like 10 to 12 degrees colder then these numbers but look at what happens when we widen out. we have a line, dividing the winter, from the spring, so to speak, it is 71 in st. louis. fifty-nine in nashville. fifty-nine in atlantic. thirty-eight in columbus a weise head to the weekend all of that warmth will erode cold and we are talking about temperatures like this right here in philadelphia when you wake up tomorrow morning though none of that warmth will be in evidence. it will be 26 degrees in the

customs and border patrol agents have seized an illegal substance from kanye. last wednesday authorities discovered nearly 97-pound of cot near the philadelphia air port. the drugs were on their way to georgia, concealed inside a bag of hair product. it had an estimated street value of $25,000. crews are working to lower the water in lake oroville where a damaged dam caused the evacuation of the 200,000 people. with rain in the forecast, the california spillway is pushing water and debris, into an adjacent river. a eroded concrete span flooded a nearby hill side earlier this week raising concerns natalie most people have returned to their homes, but officials say that this is still an emergency and urged residents to stay vigilant. in recognition of the black history month we are honoring game changers who are making a positive impact on communities of color in our area reporter cherri gregg of our sister station kyw news radio explains how one local non-profit is using the stage to impact youth.

afternoon. you can see light break go through clouds there, and so our weather watchers always sending us these great shots. i want to show you one more, we had a photo of a true starting to budd, and here it is right now this one from john, up in bucks county, he said my tree is starting to budd, spring, not so fast, coming up in a moment, we will talk about the problems with these tired i buds but first lets take a quick peak is what happening outside on storm scan three. not a whole lot going on right now. there are a few the scattered flurries across the north east , storm system bringing snow to the canadian maritime province but that is winding down. as that storm moves away we will start to see that pressure gradient slack even and you can see spin of cloud and see where those wind are coming down directly from the north and west. as storm moves away pressure gradient weakens and our wind does as well. in broad headville we have cloud cover right now, it is chilly, 30 degrees in broad headsville. chilly afternoon. the wind across the area. peak wind gusts in the 35 to 40 miles an hour range for most of us.

so wind not as severe as it it was on monday but still, very blustery, and it made it feel colder, then the thermometer indicated but here's your weekend warm up, tomorrow we will transition, seasonal day, wind dies down, saturday warmth moves in and continues to build, sunday, monday, even into tuesday and wednesday, and this looks like a extended warm stretch. i have to give a shout out to one of our "eyewitness news" viewers, who sent me a e-mail saying is there down side to the winter warmth. he works in farming and one thing to look out for these plant and shrubs if they budd too early and then go back to cold and killing frost? we can kill crops. that is not great news for farmers. the it means insects, mosquitoes, and nat could proliferate earlier leading to a longer season and bigger threat over summertime and animals and amphibians at risk if you get out, think of spring and then cold comes back that can put them at risk there are down sides to the winter warmth and how extended it will be heading through next week and even into the week after that.
