ahead, hear from the hero who helped pull the boys to safety. captioning funded by cbs good morning, from the cbs newsroom at the cbs headquarters here in new york. good to be with, i'm anne-marie green. breaking overnight, australian news reported that four americans died in a fiery plane crash, according to one of the sons, the men were heading out on a golf trip. the twin prop had taken off on melbourne's second largest airport on a flight in king island and it crashed into a shopping center. the plane had just gotten airborne when the pilot issued a distress call and was trying to return to the airport. >> the flight was taking off from the runway recording a mayday. we understand there was possibly a catastrophic engine fire but we're unsure. >> the pilot was experienced and well-known. the names of the american

victims have not been released. and overnight, emergency crews in northern california were able to close a levee breach that forced the evacuation of up to 30 homes. flash flood warnings were issued in san joaquin county east of san francisco. the breach on the san joaquin river threatened mostly farms and ranches. crews worked in the darkness to repair the levee. other rivers overflowed their banks. mud and rock slides and fallen trees blocked roads making evacuation efforts difficult. >> police were coming by saying we've got to evacuate. we're trying to get as much valuables out as we can. >> more than 500 people are under evacuation orders. they'll have to put up with more rain. chief meteorologist eric fisher of our boston station wbzz has a look at what's on the way. >> the onslaught the rain continues to come through the

west coast. still scattered showers. a little breather before the next storm arrives. the timing for that will be this weekend, especially on sunday. but flood warnings and watches will continue. a lot of runoff and rivers running very high. and a continued risk of the mudslides in california. the other story we're watching, unbelievable spring warmth keeps coming from the east. especially from the rockies. today's temps 70s in st. louis. another day of record highs in chicago. that will be five straight in chicago. 70s up and down the plains. then we head into wednesday, 80s across much of texas. the record highs will extend all the way to the east coast for the midweek. then we go to winter again. snow again towards the end of the week, in places across the midwest, a blanket of snow is expected thursday into friday, wrapping up on saturday morning. big swings in the weather. i'm meteorologist eric fisher

for cbs news. six kids were rescued after they fell through the ice on a frozen pond in new york's central park. the victims included teenagers and some as young as 10. police said they were on the ice when it gave away. near a sign that said dangerous thin ice. keep off. >> i checked. we were all sinking down and we were holding ton each other. >> police and fire and rescue units responded and two good samaritans also helped pull the kids out. >> i just had to grab them as hard as i could pull. it sure does. >> the teens are expected to be okay. i'm sure they learned a valuable lesson as well. president trump picked an active duty general to serve as his new national security adviser. thousands turned out yesterday to protest the president's policies. and the white house will soon release new guidelines to toughen immigration laws.

craig boswell reports. >> reporter: president trump announced h.r. mcmaster as his national security adviser monday at his mar-a-lago estate. >> man is highly experienced. >> reporter: but the 54-year-old career army officer served in afghanistan and the first gulf war. he's considered one of the most successful battlefield commanders in iraq. >> i'd just like to say what a privilege it is to be able to continue serving our nation. >> reporter: but in cities across the country on this presidents' day there were protests against president trump. >> we have to fight for equality. for everything under the sun that belongs to us. >> reporter: demonstrators tangled with trump supporters in new york city. and police arrested several protesters in portland, oregon, for blocking the street. the president returned to the white house where he's expected to focus on immigration again. cbs news has learned department of homeland security john kelly

will enforce guide linings which includes immediately returning immigrants captured at the mexican border. expedited deporteration for undocumented immigrants in the country less than two years. and hiring 10,000 new enforcement agents and 5,000 border patrol officers. mr. trump is expected to sign a new executive order on immigration to replace the one. ahead on "cbs this morning" we will talk to cbs news national security analyst fran townsend about the president's new national security adviser. >> there's been a knew wave of threats around jewish cemeteries. graves at a cemetery were vandalized monday. and yesterday, there were 11 separate bomb scares called into jewish community centers. it's the latest wave of

kim jong-nam was taxied last week at a kuala lumpur airport. officials say the autopsy found no puncture wounds or signs of heart attack in the estranged son of the north korean family and no one has claimed his body. the tsa is investigating a security breach at new york's kennedy airport. 11 people passed through an unsecured check point. three set off metal detectors. three of the passengers got on a flight to california, and they were searched when they landed. the eight others have yet to be identified. it took the tsa two hours to tell police. >> that's scary. >> it's unclear how long the security checkpoint was unmanned. it's believed the eight unidentified passengers boarded various flights. former attorney general eric

holder will head the investigation into claims of sexual harassment of at uber. the holder-led investigation will look at charges raised by susan fowler. fowler, a former uber employee said she was propositioned by her manager on the uber chat service in reports to human resources. in a letter to uber staff, the ceo called this an opportunity to heal wounds of the past and set a new standard for justice in the workplace. recovery efforts continue in the san antonio effort where a spring of at least three tornados damaged homes. the tornados hit late sunday and monday. about 150 homes were damaged, including three that collapsed. only five minor injuries were reported, though. many residents are counting their blessings. >> this is our master bath, master bedroom. we weren't in it, thankfully, as you can see, we would have been

our top story this morning, four americans and their pilot were killed when their charter flight crashed into an australian shopping mall. melbourne's herald sun reports the four were on a golf excursion when their plane crashed shortly after takeoff today. the shopping mall is right next to the airport. the pilot of the twin engine turboprop issued a distress call and tried to return to the airport. the mall had not opened for the day. and there were no injuries on the ground. well, families threatened with deportation as the trump administration gets ready to step up enforcement of the nation's immigration laws. mireya villarreal shows us how some los angeles people are preparing. >> reporter: at 6:45 in the
