those officers quickly jumped in to action. good evening i'm ukee washington. i'm jessica dean. lets get to "eyewitness news" reporter greg argos live at st. christopher's hospital with more on how this incredible story unfolded, greg. >> reporter: jessica and ukee, good evening. this all began with a 911 call yesterday morning, and ended with a one year-old boy being rushed here to st. christopher's hospital for children. his life saved, and his hotter , so very grateful. this story has a happy ending. >> now, he is up. >> he is up, he is pulling iv 's out of his arm, pulling stuff out of his nose. he is up. >> reporter: it we again far from it 9:30 monday morning at yas minute's smith home in north philadelphia, her one year-old son jason suddenly stopped breathing. >> his eyes started to roll in the back of his head and became unresponsive, yelling through the whole house calling 911. >> we were there minutes of getting call. >> he looked bad.

>> i began rescue breathing in an attempt to resuscitate the child. >> reporter: officer jeremy elliott continued for more than 10 minutes as his fellow 39th district brothers, dan williams and gerald woolford, monitored the pulse. >> i was hysterical. my husband consoled me. ambulance came. >> reporter: jason rushed to st. christopher's hospital for children and finally regains consciousness. >> i first grabbed him and hugged him and said thank you so much. >> reporter: whole rescue though not only connecting yas behind with the three cops. >> it kind of stayed with me. >> reporter: but connecting them with her family as well. >> i decided i would go see him today when i came to work. i wanted to take something nice for him. i stopped and got him a teddy bear and my sergeant, sergeant dayton got him a little toy police car. >> reporter: and now, unlikely friendship and a new found respect. >> they are great officers in the world and yesterday we definitely encountered them. >> reporter: for people who, without this near tragedy, may never have crossed paths. >> you kind of build up,

animosity that really shouldn't be there and then something like this happens to you and they go above and beyond for you. you are like oh, no, you cannot go with what you always hear, you have to sees things for yourself. >> reporter: jason's mother tells me her young son has breathing issues likely asthma but because of the fast action of those police officers from the 39th district he is expect to make a full recovery. we're live from north philadelphia, greg argos for cbs-3 "eyewitness news". >> greg, thank you. tonight authorities are trying to figure out the cause of the septa train accident, in upper dash that i injured four people, one of them critically. team coverage of that incident that happened at the 69th street terminal. we will begin with "eyewitness news" reporter joe holden, joe >> reporter: jessica, good evening. question is how did all of this unravel? a train entering the loop here at 69th street, slammed into a parked train. it was it a medical issue? was it operator error? well, those conclusions will

be left to the national transportation safety board. they just arrived here, on the scene, right the now they are conferring with septa as to what went wrong. what went wrong on a loop of tracks behind the 69th street terminal where an el train blued in the back of the back of the park train an inside swiped and third train. collision and derailment are at center of the federal investigation by the national transportation safety board. >> trains along the market frankford line, roll out of west philadelphia, through the 69th street terminal in upper darby before entering a loop, which allows them to turnaround and then reenter in on the system. speeds are limited to 10 miles an hour in the loop, upper darby township shared this drone video with cbs-3 giving us a closer look at the position of the derailed cars. septa confirms that the use of train controlled technology, that should have prevented a collision. >> is there an automatic train control system at signal

system. train move under signal authority and signal system will keep them separated. >> reporter: operator of the striking train was taken to the hospital in critical condition. another operator and two passengers on board were also treated for minor injuries. >> i feel pretty safe on the el. i don't worry about anything happening to he on the train. >> reporter: every passenger we spoke with was aware of the incident at 69th street terminal. each said they weren't ready to question the safety of the system. >> it is first time i actually found something wrong with septa like it never happened before. >> reporter: now a contractor was out here very quickly to get these trains back on the track, apparently, the ntsb said not so has, we want to look for ourselves. they are now leading the investigation a, into what happened here, at the 69th street terminal. live from upper darby township , i'm joe holden for cbs-3 "eyewitness news". >> thank you for that. now lets go over to "eyewitness news" reporter

david spunt in center sit the which more on how septa train riders are dealing with possible service delays, david >> good evening, rush hour for train riders well underway, no major problems, things seemed to be smooth but customers are frustrated. commuters were back to the rush hour grind tuesday afternoon in center city hours after the collision in upper darby. >> it is scary. it is scary. i ride the el every day. >> reporter: nicole aqua joined thousands of commuters touring rush hour with no major issues. others say today's news is frustrating. >> i'm sure they had to go through an appointment and i was really late because of the accident and silt ways. >> reporter: sixty-ninth street opened up in the afternoon but talk of what happened, continued to dominate conversations. as people left the city and headed home. >> you know, i ride septa every day and they have money to fix it, go fix it. >> it has been a difficult
