seven day in just a few minutes, jan, back to you. >> little something for everyone, thank you, justin. this morning, people in luzerne country getting a look at the aftermath of severe weather, and right now, the red cross is sheltering several families whose homes were damaged. "eyewitness news" reporter alexandria hoff shows us what people are waking up to this morning. >> 110 miles northwest of philadelphia, images like this, follow the storm. >> downed trees litter neighborhoods, block already swamped roadways, and emergency personnel, attempt topped close flooded routes that some drivers pressed on despite dangers. >> people fly into it. don't realize it. that if you don't have good wires your car will die. >> many indeed paralyzed by the flood waters. this driver hit such heavy rain and winds on the road, that her windshield wiper flew off. >> well, here it is. so very crazy wetter.

>> for those who lost far more, it was a devastating blow. while residents in luzerne and lackawanna counties were warned of the dangerous possibility, the national weather service will have to examine the path of this damage, to determine if the tornado touched down. >> following the storm, the red cross was assisting at least six families in luzerne county. reporting from the sat center, alexandria hoff, cbs-3, "eyewitness news." now we also saw that severe weather move through our area. this is video from "eyewitness news" photographer, will ken worthy. he shot it in perkioman montgomery county yesterday afternoonment you can see that the storm brought rain, wind, and lightning with it. that storm moved through philadelphia too. this is time lapse video from our studios in spring garden. you can see the moments the sky turned danker and gray and then the rain began. we did not see the sun too much after that. >> remember, when we're not on the air, you can always track the severe weather any time at the palm of your hand. just download the free cbs

philly weather app. it is available on itunes and google play. >> new orleans police have a suspect in custody today after a car plowed into a crowd while watching a mardi gras parade there. twenty-eight people were hurt while watching the parade in the mid city saturday afternoon, five victims are in guarded condition. police say it looks like the case of driving while intoxicated. >> the ninth annual pink invitational now underway, hundreds every young gymnasts are showing off their skills and in the process they're supporting breast cancer patients. cherri gregg from sister station "kyw news radio" is at pennsylvania convention center this morning. cherry, it sounds like whole lot of excitement is building. how are you doing? >> ♪ >> good morning, jan, yes, that's right, as you can see hine me, the young ladies are now stretching, the competition begins in a few moments, and they are raising money for unite for her, an organization that provides wellness service to women

dealing with breast cancer, here with two of the coaches from center elite. state college, pennsylvania, and caitlin and beth how are you feeling today, and how are your girls doing? >> they're doing great. we're feeling ready to go and excited for the good cause. >> yes, so you guys had to raise money to participate. what did your girls do? >> we raise add lot. we do fundraisers, car washes, to support the cause, wonderful cause. >> any cart wheel-a-tons. >> no, we don't do cart wheel a-tons, really hard to do nowadays. >> just one of the many teams that are participating, weaver about 3300 young gym that is cents participating today to raise $500,000. that money will go to about ten hospitalization in the region. that provide wellness service toss women dealing with breast cancer, and of course, the competition kicks off at 8: 30 today. live at the pennsylvania convention center, cherri gregg, "kyw news radio," for cbs-3, "eyewitness news."

and affordability, of tests nowadays. this morning, natasha brown goes on journey with more than 2,000 student, faculty and staff at west chester university. they all got a closer look at their roots. >> our region is filled with the mosaic every faces, differs looks, and ethnicity, lounges a bound. our different also often pronounce the, but professors at west chester university are trying to start a different conversation. >> or diversity becomes more of a topic every finding similarities. >> my name is -- i identify as a white female. >> my name is bryce and i identify as black and white. >> hi, aim shannon henry african-american. >> here on campus we met up with a group of serious students looking to delve into their ancestory. >> i'm irish. >> they found an outlet in professor anita's diversity

project. >> the project started ten years ago, when there was a grant from the multi culturing faculty commission to look at diversity in a non-traditional way. >> decade later, valet. and affordability of and zesty dna test has expanded her mission. >> the way that we have used it, to get people to talk about race in a positive way. >> and this project is sort of tumbling, you start with yourself, the diversity within. >> some student event already gone through the process. >> so it was very informative for myself and for my family to hey, with confidence, we're from african, we're 20% european. >> knowing that you're little different than you thought. >> and so you will actually hands that back to me. >> we went on john which these students as they began the process. submitting dna samples, looking beyond the narrative they've always been told about themselves. >> my family has very strong family narratives. i've heard throughout my life of indonesian descent.

>> i've known that i'm african-american. so that's all i know. so, basically, i just want it dig deeper. >> people ask me, what are you? i am black and white. >> but as they'll discover, there already more than meet the eye when they get their results. >> there are three parts to this. >> i even decided to join in exploring my own ancestory. >> off to the races. >> do you feel nervous? >> i am. >> why do i feel nervous. >> test results. >> after a few weeks, the ancestory dna results were back. it was time for the big reveal. >> 32% from african backgrounds, then variety of things with 68% european backgrounds, various regions of africa. >> i expected to see mostly european, that's what i know of my family backgrounds, but i would expect would be in fact even more scan dough near yan. >> expected more scandanavian roots, i on the other hands didn't expect to find any. >> at of your backgrounds is african.

>> 2,000 student, faculty and staff at west chester university have actually participated in the dna testing actually more now than ever, the availability and affordability is out there. that's why there is such interest. you can get these tests for anywhere from 808 to $99. at one point they were at least $450 per kit. so, really just a lot of interest in dn a and zesty these days. natasha brown, cbs-3, "eyewitness news." >> very cool. i'm glad natasha took part, always interesting to see what is made up in our backgrounds. turning to weather now, little something for everyone in this forecast. >> definately. so we had the warmth the past three days, hit the seven's, but still, overall, snow lovers got gipped this month. typically this is our most snowy month, february, we average over 8 inches, only got two. >> they hate us. but yeah, sorry. >> no snow for the rest of february, i can guarantee that. maybe little warmth for -- more into march. we'll see there are shots of some cold air. as of now no big storm systems to talk about. another warming trends on the way for middle of this week.

colds though this morning. specially to the north and west, berks county, where they got rocked yesterday. severe storms, and right now, 29 degrees, kutztown area middle school, big difference compared to yesterday when we were until the 60s at this hour. still have some cloud cover, need to thin out little bit. don't expect to see full sunshine today. but skies will be partly sunny. up into berks county, lehigh valley county today. seasonable as far as levels go, highs in the four's, average high 47 degrees. but we will warm it up starting tomorrow back good 10 . maybe pushing zero seven by the middle of the week. couple of rain chances though, that's good thing, get more wet weather into the region but yesterday, some more lake felt may, certainly late spring, temperatures low, mid 70s, these are the highs, across the mid-atlantic, 75, souls bury maryland, almost 80 in richmond, 81 for folk virginia, then the front came through, brought storms, winds shifted out of the northwest. cooler canadian air, stuck in

the mid maybe upper 40's at best. we have westerly breeze, sometimes west wind, as it comes down off the mountains, able to warm up little bit. temperatures coat get to the upper 40's, but this is impressive. all of that he is days here, the numbers are above average numbers here in red. below average, blue, hardly any blue, four days below average for the month so far when you take the high and low temperature together. this is not just little bit above average. look at the numbers, 23 above average, 24 on the 19th. yesterday, two # two, 24, on friday. so, incredible, eight-point a degrees above average on the month so far. so this is will go down as one of the warmest month of february's on record for philadelphia. thirty-five right now at the airport in allentown, 25 mount pocono. look at the cold air though. could be worse. alpena michigan 22, 24 minneapolis. cold air kind of sits over the northern haft of the us for the next 12-24 hours being lake effect snow showers western pennsylvania up-state new york maybe stray flurry in the poconos. it is cold enough to make some snow. great news for ski resorts,

certainly tonight, tomorrow night, temperatures will be dropping well below freezing for the mountains. high pressure protecting us today and tomorrow. so, big storms -- no big storms to talk about, will get cloud cover back in here machine day afternoon, sign of the warmer air. couple of showers may roll in here early on tuesday morning. probably out of here by the afternoon, then better chance for some rain coming in wednesday, with this next system. but it is a strong front. once again tracks to the north and wells. in warm side. making run at 70 for the middle of the week the jet stream to the south. it moves back north for the middle of the week. up and down temperatures typical this time of year then another shot of colder air returns by the end of the week into next weekend. so i think next weekends actually is below average. so cooler start. looks like for the month of march, at least the first half of the month could be colder than average. forty-eight today for the high temperature, tonight it gets colds. suburbs, could be below freezing, then tomorrow, back up to 58 degrees. few showers tuesday. better chance for some rain wednesday, with high of 70. then look at the high next saturday, only near 40 degrees, and maybe even

didn't happen. nicky had creeped her whole life about the magical day. she and mike carefully planned every detail for a year. but, days before the nuptials, nicky ended up in the hospital. >> i was hysterical. i was crying. >> it was very scary. that's what it was, it was just -- no way this is happening. at first i'm thinking my god, she is dying. >> it was after challenging spin class when things started going hey wire for nicky. >> i've never thought that something like that would happen to me. i mean, i played sports my whole life. done intense training. >> suddenly developed condition that strikes athletes, sometimes mistaken for the flu, or just soreness, after a work out. >> we see it in people after usually intense exercise. >> called ran know my lysis, where muscles for unknown reason breaks down, releasing toxins, that can cause kidney failure. >> she worked out her whole life. ought sudden, a week before the wedding hurt because she worked out. >> it starts with sore and

weak muscles, then there is swelling. >> my thighs, both of them, only from my knees to little farther under my ways, ten times their size. >> at riddle hospital, nicky got the standard treatment, iv fluids to remove the toxins, but her levels weren't going down fast enough. >> i got to the point where i might not be going to the wedding. and then that's when i like couldn't handle it any more. >> so the staff decided to surprise nicky with a rehearsal dinner at the hospital, she was overcome with emotion. >> riddle hospital did amazing job. >> and on the day of the wedding, the hospital did something else. >> they let nicky leave for a few hours. >> how unusual is it that you release somebody temporarily? >> you know, it was the right thing to do. >> she didn't feel good. but nicky, a beautiful bride, got married as plans. >> i couldn't really walk, stand for long period of time. the once in a lifetime thing. like you dream about it your whole life. then you can't even like

dance. i started crying. >> after the wedding on new years eve, nicky went back to the hospital for more iv therapy. >> and now that she is recovered, and happily reminiscing about the wedding, nicky says, she is worried about working out again. >> i didn't feel any pain. i didn't feel anything when it was happening. until afterward. so like how do i know it won't happen again? >> doctors say the syndrome is rare, and that working out is beneficial. there is real now way to prevent this except to stay well hydrated and that's why awareness and quick treatment are so important. >> people do cross fit and, you know, cycling classes, more intensive forms of exercise, i think we have to certainly be more aware of it and how people understand it is a consequence that far. >> lessons learned for the delaware count you knewly weds together through sickness and health. >> i'm stephanie stahl, cbs-3, eyewitness news. >> and still ahead in our next half hour, right here on cbs-3

>> winter weather lovers lose out, justin, thank you. president trump says he will not be attending the white horse correspondence dinner this year, announced decision on tweet saturday, wish everyone great evening on april 29th. the black tie event is an annual tradition for presidents, reporters and washington insiders. trump's decision follows increasingly tense relations between the white house and the media. several news outlets have also pulled out of the event to protest trump's treatment of the press. >> this morning the democratic party has new leader, tom perez elected chairman fer owes was labor second under president obama. after the victory, perez delivered a message every unity. >> to appoint keith ellison deputy chair of the democratic national committee. >> i know we can win the battle ahead. i know we will win the battles ahead. when we put our values.

morning, where the pink invitational is now underway. hi, cherry. >> good morning, the competition just beginning, now, currently singing the national anthem. parents are all lined up, to see their young gymnasts performment as you can see, the act of patriotism that's going on, this event raises about $500,000, an organization that provides wellness is her vest toss wombat link breast cancer. about 3300 young gymnasts will be participating, they're all wearing the special pink leo tarred, that signifies tumbling, for their sisters, and all sorts of people, and as you can see, they're standing here, they have on pink leotards, have special pink camies on hats, capes

to the shore. people out on the board walk this morning. dramatic drop in the temperature, 8:00 yesterday, close to 06 degrees for philadelphia. this morning, at 8:37, typical for late february, so this is where we should be, and we talked about the snow lovers, really getting gipped this month. this is typically our snowiest month, on average, the average almost 9 inches every snow for philadelphia. so far this month, only 2 inches, not going to get any more snow for the month. our most snowy february 2010. remember that winter rough one. 51.5 inches, just in the month. so far, on the season, totals, 8 inches, not done yet. winter still has some time. maybe see little snow. not going to say we will get it but possible. signs of spring, just two weeks away from daylight saving time. so we turn the clocks ahead, saturday night, on the 11th into the 12th, sunday, march 12th, will be setting the sun at clock zero four in the evening for philadelphia. so those days getting longer by about two and a half minutes as we approach the spring summer season. lake effect snow showers confined central western

pennsylvania, maybe snow shower gets into the poconos this morning into the afternoon. limited sunshine, up there, maybe some more sundown toward the shore. rain chances pretty much zero today, tomorrow, and then tuesday, we bring back 50% chance for few showers around, nothing widespread. most of the day probably going to stay on the dry side. wednesday, especially late in the day, that's our best chance to see some wet weather, we bump things up to 70% chance, could be some heavier showers, wednesday afternoon, wednesday night, another strong cold front moves on through, maybe even thunderstorm, not out of the question. temps today, struggling to mid had's, maybe upper 40's for the warm he is spot, cold tonight, so tomorrow morning, back to work and school. yes, need the winter coat once again, near freezing in a lot of the suburbs, mid 30's around the city. so decent rebound. even though we have some clouds around monday, we still get into the 50's. i think maybe even upper 50's, here's a reason for the short-term cool down. the drop in the jet stream allows the canadian air to settle in. but the jet back on the move by the middle of the week. get the ridge push northward, here comes milder air, highs
