midwest, killing at least two people and leaving miles of destruction. good morning. i'm from studio 57 from new york, i'm meg oliver. an unusually measured president trump told congress that small thinking is behind us. in a departure from his usual no holds barred approach, the president feels bipartisanship outlined his plan to repeal obama care and his tax reform. >> reporter: good morning, meg. by all accounts president trump needed move past the chaotic start of his administration. last night he gave republicans exactly what they have wanted. a different tone while delivering his vision for the country. >> the time for trivial fights is behind us.

>> reporter: president trump hits the reset button on his young administration tuesday night in his address to congress, he stuck to the script and offered a road map for overhauling obama care. >> we should insure that americans with preexisting conditions have access to coverage. >> reporter: he also made a case for his proposed $54 billion surge in defense spending, partly to help veterans. >> our veterans have delivered for this nation, and now we must deliver for them. >> reporter: mr. trump's hour-long address drew several rounds of applause. >> we are also taking strong measures to protect our nation from radical islamic terrorism. >> reporter: on social media one of the most tweeted about moments happened when he honored the widow of navy seal ryan owens. owens died in the president's first authorized military operation in yemen last month. >> ryan died as a warrior and a

widow of a navy seal. corrine owens was an unannounced guest. as we reported, her husband, william ryan owens, was killed in a raid last month. the president said the mission was highly successful and that owens did not die in vein. >> ryan laid down his life for his friends, for his country, and for our freedom, and we will never forget ryan. >> owens' father has demounounc him. cbs news john dickerson said the president's speech was also aimed at republican lawmakers. >> this was an evolution from certainly an inaugural address. all the same themes are at the heart of it, but a kinder package, less confrontational, but is this a temporary moment, or does he start to govern in

this fashion? also, if you are a member of congress, what did you get out of this speech that you can now use in your town hall oorz in talking to your constituents? that's the benefit of a speech like this. the president hand done what he can with executive orders. now he has to be a leader of republicans, and we have to look for something in his speech that they can use. i'm not sure there's something in there for them to use. good for him, but he needs also it to be go ahead for republicans. >> ahead on cbs this morning norah o'donnell talks to vice president mike pence about the president's address. now to the deadly tornados spawning weather that's moving across the midwest. at least two deaths, one in illinois and one in missouri, are blamed on the storm. is 21 tornadoes were reported yesterday between iowa, missouri, and illinois. some of the worst damage is in north-central illinois. four tornadoes were reported near the town of ottawa where

there is extreme property damage. one survivor says she jumped in her bathtub to save her life. >> trees are down. my car is wrecked. my neighbor's cars are wrecked. it's disaster. it looks like a bomb went off. >> the tornado in missouri about 55 miles south of st. louis blew cars and trucks across an interstate. the threat of dangerous weather is expected to last in some areas through the morning. an arizona man who drove his suv into a river was rescued by firefighters. the man got stuck last night. a rescue crew was able to walk him to safety. it's unclear how he end up there. president trump's new immigration order will reportedly remove iraq from the list of countries whose citizens face a temporary travel ban. the pentagon and state department urged the white house to remove iraq because of its role in fighting isis.

the president's original order in late january sparked nationwide protest. >> hey, hey, ho, ho, donald trump has got to go. >> the president could sign the new order as early as today. the president signed a bill reversing an obama administration regulation banning gun purchases by the mentally ill. president obama issued the executive order following the san bernardino shooting in 2015. congressional republicans said the rule was unfair to people who had mental health issues, but were otherwise competent to own a gun. the fbi is investigating last week's shooting in a kansas bar as a hate crime. before he shot two indian men, the suspect yelled "get out of my country." one man was killed. the other wounded. alabama authorities say there is no indication that drugs or alcohol was involved when a man drove his suv into a high school band at a mardi gras

no further legal action. the boston globe reports on rihanna accepting a humanitarian award from harvard. the grammy winning singer received a standing ovation during the ceremony yesterday. some students had waited for hours to get in. among rihanna's long list of charitable work, she built a state-of-the-art cancer center in her native country. the amazing change of fortune for gary from chicago, the unsuspecting tourist catapulted to fame during the oscars. >> i now pronounce you husband and wife. kiss the bride. >> gary got to rub shoulders with hollywood's biggest stars during host jimmy kimmel's surprise bit from sunday. he was released from prison two days ago. he served 20 years under california's three strikes law. amazon's cloud service outage caused massive internet problems in the east.

broke down in the eastern united states. users had trouble with features ranging from file sharing to loading data. internet servers across the u.s. were impacted. it stores files and data for companies on remote servers. amazon has not commented on the outage. wal-mart's upgraded app let's customers skip store lines. they have express lane service for both prescription drugs and money transfers. customers fill in money transfer orders on a device and go to the appropriate counter. that new service will begin to are out next month. and youtube is launching a web tv he service. youtube tv will offer packages of about 40 broadcasting cable channels for $35 a month. it comes with unlimited storage on the cloud's dvr and lets three people watch on different devices at the same time. it's expected to launch next month in a few different cities. meg. >> one more company getting in

free and starts running again. on too funny. health experts are raising concerns about an alarming trend in young adults. a sharp rise in colo-rectal people in people as young as their 20s and 30s. >> reporter: each pregnancy for hyatt seemed to get harder and more painful, but it took years for doctors to find out what was wrong. >> i've never even really considered colon cancer. i thought old men get that. >> reporter: the mother of three is a growing number of young people diagnosed with colo-rectal cancer according to a new american cancer society study. it shows people born in 1990 have twice the risk of colon cancer and four time the risk of rectal cancer as people born in 1950 faced at the same age. >> why is this happening? >> that's the million dollar question. we don't know.
