almost didn't make it. >> reporter: it happened out of no where where he was sick, fever, vomiting, not himself, at the hospital, he was crashing. >> i have never felt so sad in my life. >> reporter: connell's havertown parents john and christian were bombarded. first they were told their little boy had sepsis, potentially deadly infection. he was also diagnosed with leukemia, blood cancer was manageable, sepsis infection was more dire. >> we could see that his legs and his fingers were already starting to turn black from the septic shock that destroyed his limbs. >> reporter: connell ended up having both legs amputated and fingers on one hand. >> it is in the what you ever think that your job is going to be a prosthetics for rest of his life but you will take him anyway thaw can. >> reporter: chris who lives in plymouth meeting wasn't as lucky his 15 year-old daughter , emily, died from a sepsis infection. >> her smile lit up a room. everyone that knew emily love

airport. coldest night since january 10th where we dropped to 14 that morning and really the story today will be wind chill values over next few hours. actual air temperatures still holding in the upper teens. eighteen in philadelphia, close to 20 in south jersey. still mid teens in the suburbs , 15 in doyletown, and in pottstown at this hour. wind chills still hanging down in the single digits even though wind speed not that strong, cold air is in place but wind will lighten up heading in the afternoon. these wind chills do get better, but still nonetheless it is a cold day. storm scan three is nice and quiet in, threat of any precipitation, today over next 24 hours. pretty quiet weather we're in but we will expect milder temperatures to return. today, loss of sunshine, need sunglasses, high temperature still running a good 10 degrees below average. less wind, still watch out for wind chills this morning down around zero and single digits at times. we will get close to 40. it is not going to feel like witt that breeze.

up upper 30's near the shore and poconos. get ready for another warming trend for the workweek making run at 60-degree temperatures. we are tracking rain. we will time it out in eyewitness weather in a few minutes, jan, back to you. at least sunnies shining, thanks, justin. nurses and technical workers walk off the job at delaware county memorial hospital. they are accusing the hospital 's parent company of not properly staffing the medical center. and now, "eyewitness news" reporter anita oh is live at delaware county memorial hospital this morning. anita, what is impact on patients there. >> reporter: good morning, jan after 370 nurses and technicians walk off the job here the happies saying that they are opened, and ready for to serve patients thanks to a contingency plan that they have started to prepare two weeks ago when union leaders first threatened to strike. as you can see, it is happening, these nurses walk off the job around 6:40 this morning, and they are demanding, safe staffing.

i'm joined by mary joe, you have been a nurse here for 22 years at the hospital. tell me what you guys are asking for. >> well, part of our role as professional nurses toys advocate for our patients. patients safety is so important to us. ratios help us give our patients the best care possible. prospect has in the been opened to any negotiations about patient ratios and staffing in the hospital. >> reporter: now you guys are consistently saying that staffing levels are an issue. there are not enough nurses, to patients. when you go home at the end of the day is what your concern leaving your patients here. >> with professional nurses we always look back on the day, what could we have done better not having enough staffing doesn't give us a bedtime, the time necessary, at the bedside , to give education and to give support to patients

that are, sick and families of patients that are dying or of cancer or have complex medical problems. >> reporter: do you believe lives are hanging in the balance here. >> as a nurse we always take time to provide the best care but staffing secures patient safety at a higher level. >> reporter: i want to read you a statement from the hospital spokesmen. he tells me we regret that they have been unwilling to agree to a reasonable settlement and called upon its members to abandon patients at the bedside in an attempt to arrest even higher wages and benefits from the hospital. is what your response to this? >> well, i think we never abandoned our patients. we gave a 10 day notice. we were called into an emergency meeting yesterday where prospect made our bargaining committee a nine people waited in the lobby for an hour because they didn't have enough chairs in their center city office. so is that negotiating? it has never been about money.

it is always been about benefits, and staffing is main concern of the majority of the nurses at this hospital. this is our community. these are our patients. we have lived here. we have taken care of them. most of the nurses have been here 20 plus years. it is our hospital and our community and we want to make sure that they get the best care possible. >> reporter: thanks very much, marry joe. these nurses plan to continue to picket here until 7:30 tonight and they will be back here again tomorrow. for now live from delaware county memorial hospital i'm anita oh for cbs-3 "eyewitness news". >> anita, thank you. right now fire officials are trying to figure out what cause aid fire that sent a young girl to the hospital. fire broke out in the 6500 block of north bouveer street around 6:30 last night. that is in philadelphia's west oak lane section. by the time, fire fighters arrived the fire had already spread to both the first and second floors of this home, a man and a woman were rescued.

fire fighters then had to work their way to the second floor with a little girl that was trapped. >> companies made a herc leann effort to get to a young child that at this point has been trans ported but is in critical but stable condition at the hospital. >> we are awaiting an update on the condition of both that little girl and her parents. fire fighters say the fire may have started on the first floor of the home, it is unclear if the home had any working smoke detectors. investigators have now identified the victim of the deadly hit and run crash in pottstown, montgomery county. police are looking for one of two cars that ran over 24 year-old donald parnel this happened at route 100 and shoemaker role just before 8:00 o'clock friday night. investigators say parnel was walking to his job at wendy's when a dark colored pickup truck struck him and kept going. a second vehicle hit parnel and that driver stayed at the scene. manhunt is on, for this group of burglars, authorities
