thousands skip work for a day without a woman, while the current first lady and the first ladies before her celebrated international women's day. good morning from the studio 57 newsroom at cbs news headquarters here in new york. good to be with you. i'm anne marie green. dangerous winds that caused extensive damage in the midwest and northeast are expected to calm down today, but more than a half a million people in the central midwest lost power and transportation was disrupted. >> reporter: some of the worst damage was in michigan, where giant trees crushed homes and other buildings like they were cardboard. >> i do feel a little lucky i wasn't hurt or anything. it's just one of those things. you don't want it to happen, but i'm hoping i'm going to get a new garage out of this. >> reporter: crews worked through the night to restore power after wind gusts topped 60 miles per hour, knocking down power lines from illinois to

northern new york. some customers will be without electricity for days. the high winds fanned the flames of a deadly apartment fire in detroit. five people were killed and four others injured. in ohio, high winds pushed a tractor trailer on its side, just one of several trucks toppled by the wind. and a close call for members of the university of michigan basketball team. their plane slid off the runway at an airport near campus when the pilot had to abort takeoff because of the high winds. the plane sustained extensive damage, but no one was seriously injured. >> well, the winds were so strong, commuter trains were stopped in east chicago, indiana. most of the advisories and warnings are canceled this morning. evacuees in the southern plains are returning home this morning after a string of wildfires burned for days. fires throughout kansas, texas, oklahoma, and colorado scorched more than a million acres. six deaths are blamed on the

fires. and in southwest florida, folks are returning home after a dangerous brush fire. >> i've never seen a fire move as fast as it did. it just blew through the trees like butter. >> the 7500-acre fire destroyed at least one home and three out buildings. breaking overnight, hawaii has become the first state to sue to stop president trump's revised travel ban. hawaii had previously sued over the president's initial travel ban. the new ban bars visas for people from six predominantly muslim countries. hawaii says it will harm the state's muslim population, tourism, and foreign students. 20% of hawaii's work force is foreign born. in washington, the president is working hard to counter the growing opposition to the health care bill proposed by house republicans. late yesterday, the president met with members of conservative groups that oppose the plan, but

the white house is doing a tap dance regarding the president's allegations of wiretapping. >> good morning. president trump faces an uphill battle trying to persuade democrats and some members of his own party to support the republican replacement for obamacare. house lawmakers are holding a marathon debate to finalize the legislation despite not knowing how much it will cost and how it will be paid for. >> we are here to legislate. when are we going to get down to business? >> reporter: the battle over the republican plan to repeal and replace obamacare spilled into the early hours. >> we don't know how much it's going to cost. >> reporter: as house democrats offered dozens of amendments to slow down the process. >> trumpcare will hurt our oldest, poorest, and sickest citizens. >> this is disgraceful. if you've got better ideas, put them forward. >> reporter: despite pushback from conservative republicans as well as major hospital and

senior groups, gop leaders are putting the legislation on the fast track. >> i have no doubt we'll pass this because we're going to keep our promises. >> reporter: the house debate comes as the white house continues to field tough questions from the press over president trump's wiretap claims. >> is the president the target of a counterintelligence investigation? >> there is no reason to believe that there's any type of investigation with respect to the department of justice. >> reporter: republican senator lindsey graham and democratic senator sheldon whitehouse sent a letter to the fbi yesterday asking for any information that would have warranted that activity. >> if there's no warrant, that's something we need to know. if there was a warrant, i need to understand why one was issued. >> reporter: the white house has asked congress to investigate the president's charge. and president trump has tapped former republican utah governor john huntsman to serve as his ambassador to russia. the job, which requires senate confirmation, would put huntsman in moscow amid ongoing

investigations. >> hena daniels here in new york, thank you so much. ahead on "cbs this morning," we'll talk to house majority leader kevin mccarthy about the backlash against the gop health care reform bill. it's reported that cia contractors are likely the source of the wikileaks release of alleged cia hacking technology. reuters reports intelligence agencies have been aware of the breach since the end of last year. the cia says americans should be deeply troubled. google and apple are reassuring users that they have or will repair flaws that would allow the cia to hack their phones or tvs. white house press secretary sean spicer says you can't compare wikileaks' disclosure of cia files and publishing personal e-mails from hillary clinton's staff. >> there is a big difference between disclosing john podesta's g-mail accounts about a back and forth and his undermining of hillary clinton and his thoughts on her on a

personal nature and the leaking of classified information. there's a massive, massive difference between those two things. >> the white house says the president is extremely concerned about the leak. overseas now, at least 20 people were killed when twin suicide bombers attacked a wedding in iraq. the bombers attacked the wedding last night at a village north of baghdad. up to 13 others were wounded. there's been no claim of responsibility, but isis has staged similar attacks in the past. air strikes believed to be carried out by the u.s.-led coalition killed 14 civilians this morning near the isis-held city of raqqah in syria. meanwhile, a couple of hundred u.s. marines are on the ground in the area preparing to assist syrian troops fighting to oust isis. the marines will man artillery in the battle for raqqah. the deployment is temporary. several hundred special operations troops have been advising local forces there for months. and it was a day without a

woman. across the u.s., women skipped work and joined rallies to demonstrate their economic clout and rally for women's rights. >> when women's rights are under attack, what do we do? >> fight back, fight back. >> from miami to oakland, women protested. some businesses gave female employees the day off. women make about 75 cents on every dollar made by a man. on capitol hill, democratic lawmakers highlighted the inequities by stepping out themselves. and the day without a woman protest was part of international women's day. melania trump posted a luncheon at the white house. the first lady welcomed about 50 women to commemorate the push for women's rights. reporters were led out of the room before mrs. trump began to speak. in her second event in as many nights, hillary clinto once again delivered a message of female empowerment. >> never lose your optimism,

your persistence, and your resistance. >> clinton urged women to organize and unite and to push for equality in the u.s. and throughout the world. the remarks came at an event for vital voices, a women's organization which clinton founded. and former first lady michelle obama has made her return to the spotlight. mrs. obama surprised a group of washington students speaking to the girls about the importance of education. well, no one was injured when a fire broke out on a passenger jet at o'hare airport in chicago. the klm 747 was sitting at the gate with no one on board. the faa says the fire apparently broke out in the baggage loader. coming up on the morning news, parade controversy. boston's st. patrick's day parade bans gay veterans.

"the columbus dispatch" reports the arraignment of a hollywood actor. police released video show the

on the cbs money watch, the upcoming jobs report and uber's self-driving cars return to the road in california. jill wagner is at the new york stock exchange with that and more. >> good morning. a blockbuster report for february. adp says companies added about 298,000 jobs. that is way more than expected. it's actually the biggest monthly increase since 2013. these strong numbers make it more likely that the fed will raise interest rates at its meeting next week. we'll get a bigger picture of the overall job market on friday. that's when the government releases its monthly report. stocks on wall street were mostly lower, though, after the price of oil slumped 5%, pulling down energy companies. the dow fell 69 points yesterday. the s&p lost five. the nasdaq, though, gained three. uber's self-driving cars are returning to california, but they won't be picking up passengers.

uber received a permit to test two self-driving suvs on public roads with back-up drivers. back in december, uber started a pilot program in san francisco without a permit. it was shut down. uber's self-driving cars do pick up passengers in phoenix and pittsburgh. the home rental company air bnb is reportedly considering getting into the long-term rental market. users could use the service to find a place to stay for months or even a permanent home. when it started, air bnb focused on short-term rentals but now offers excursions and luxury trip rentals as well. and the high-end watch maker movado is partnering with google to launch a smart watch connection. it includes five watch designs specifically for android 2.0. prices start at about $495. >> all right, jill wagner at the new york stock exchange. thank you so much, jill. still ahead, information trail. before you throw away that old

with the u.s. platoon using drones to fight the insurgents. >> reporter: it looks like a toy plane. >> it's just a really big slingshot. >> reporter: and sounds like a lawn mower. but the rq7bv2 is a $1 million drone. the u.s. military calls it the shadow. in the skies above mosul, it allows the american coalition to do this. call in air strikes targeting isis positions. this sergeant is a drone pilot with the 82nd airborne division in northern iraq, surveilling the battlefield in incredible detail from the back of a humvee. >> by the vehicles they're driving and what they're wearing, it's easy to tell. >> you can see what people are wearing? >> enough to make out whether they're american or not. i can't read somebody's name tags or anything, but i can tell what they're wearing. >> reporter: the average age of the drone pilots in shadow
