in chester county instead of where the alleged ambush occurred, good afternoon, i'm rahel solomon. >> i'm jim donovan. live at chester county courthouse where the proceedings kicked off this morning, good morning, joe. >> reporter: good afternoon, expected to be very slow and arduous process, there are more than 1,000 chester county resident as part of this possible and the judge is weaving through numerous questions about a hundred potential jurors at a time, those questions go to have you seen anything about this case, do you have problems with this case potentially going to a death penalty phase, and also, is the final selection of these jurors going, again, will be width link down from more than 1,000 to 18, that includes 65 alternates, and they'll essentially be transplanted, to pike county northeastern pennsylvania, where the trial process and possible penalty phase could last some six weeks.

>> show you eric frein the man we are talking about charged with first degree murder in the shooting death of pennsylvania state police corporal brian dixon. dixon and another trooper alex douglas were ambushed outside their barracks in rural page county, according to investigators. trooper douglas survived not before having to undergo number of surgeries save his life. accused of lying in wait. and opening fire, on that barracks, in bloom inning grove township. after the shooting prosecutors say he essentially played a game of cat and mouse with army of troopers. he is accused of terrorist counts as well as detectives say he planted bombs along the way, to avoid capture. remains free with police trailing his movement for nearly 50 days. this is a capitol case as we've been mentioning, the district attorney from pike county is speaking -- seeking the death penalty. now frein of course was seated in the courtroom this morning, he is wearing a suit anti,

he's wearing glasses, as well. now this process was very late in starting about 90 minutes behind schedule before things kick off, on lunch break expected to resume this process of q and a with the judge at 1:00. count on cbs-3 for all of the latest, reporting live in west chester, joe holden, cbs-3, "eyewitness news." >> today is a mild one at least for awhile. we're tracking some snow, meteorologist, lauren casey, live on the sunny cbs-3 skydeck. >> good afternoon, jim, yes, just soaking up the rays out here on the skydeck. it is really nice, turn down the winds a little bit, but otherwise warm temperatures, don't even need the jacket. bright sunshine, at 64 degrees right now in philadelphia, near 60 in the lehigh valley, six an in ac, cooler in the poke necessary in the 40's, those winds whipping, winds sweeps up around 21, 25 miles

per hour, will hang on throughout the afternoon hours, so we will keep around the nice sunshine, what we have on storm scan3, but by tomorrow, storm scan3 will be a lot busier winter weather advisory north of the city, berks county, lehigh valley, poconos, kicks in tonight, runs through tomorrow morning watch to expect, some snow by early morning, mixing in with some rain, some sleep, period every steady snowfall likely from 7:00 to 9:00 a.m., along the i95 corridor and south jury will hamper our commute. snow squawls will redevelop as we head into the afternoon, so tomorrow will be a much different day, we will time out the snowfall little more, and talk about how much snow to expect in your full forecast, coming up. >> following breaking news at this hour, several graves uncovered at construction site in old city philadelphia, the coffins being dug up on arch street near the betsy ross house between second and third street, right to anita oh, on the grounds in old city, what

can you tell us so far? >> while not clear exactly how many graves are here, i'm told it could number in the hundreds, you can see behind me the construction site that has been stopped. you can't see through. but right to video from chopper three, that was over the scene, which clearly shows workers digging up several coffins here, we also saw them sifting through dirt, and putting some items into gallon size zip lock bags, unclear what those items were. and i am told that a 12 to 13-story apartment complex will be built here at this construction site. now, back here on the scene, you can see that these contractors are working to put up this fencing, again, this view is obstructed now and the site manager has declined all comment, although, i have reached out to the historical commission here in the city for more answers, so we bring you that on line and on air today at "eyewitness news" at 5:00. for now live in old city,

anita oh, cbs-3, "eyewitness news." >> all right, and eat, a see you then, thank you. and the philadelphia eagles have released linebacker connor barwin the eagles put out statement this morning saying in part connor is a tremendous teammate player and even better person. thirty year old barwin started every regular season game in his four years with the eagles, also known for his effort to revitalize philadelphia through his make the world better foundation. >> for his part, barwin sent out tweet this morning saying thank you philadelphia from the bottom of my heart. for welcoming me and seeing the amazing city you are. and fellow player malcolm jenkins sent love to barwin on twitter saying he couldn't ask for better teammate. he added barwin has been leader not only in the game, but in his community. >> and the eagles have also just announced they pick up wide receiver tori smith, signed three year deal with philadelphia for $15 million. the wide receiver was picked up as an if he agent. he most recently played for the 49ers, much more on all of the eagle development later

today on "eyewitness news" starting at 5:00. >> in other news, power has been restored to thousands of homes and businesses two days after a large fire at a peco substation in north philadelphia. officials had difficulty last night trying to get their remaining power onto remaining customers. some customers had had power restored even lost it again. all outages finally restored just before 9:00 this morning, flames ravaged the substation on the 2600 block every west westmoreland street, no word on what sparked that blaze. police in new jersey continue to investigate after a car crashed into a home overnight. the driver is still at large. "eyewitness news" reporter trang do in pennsgrove in salem county, where the crash occurred. a couple in their 70s received rude awakening around 1:00 thursday morning, when car plowed into the side of their pennsgrove home. >> parents are fine, little shook up. >> william returned over to his parent house to find two broken fences, a smashed upset and, and a gaping hole in the side of the house. >> they hit in the right spot.

because wait bearing walls on the corner. >> lost control coming around the curve onto east line street here, you can see the exact point where the car jumps the curb, went straight into the yard. >> would you say speed is a factor? >> yes, i would, based on the damage to the house, the damage to the vehicle. >> carney point police sergeant joe johnson said police officer was trying to pull the car over but the car wouldn't stop. after crashing into the house the man ran off leaving four people in the car. medics took the front passenger to salem hospital after she hit her head-on the win shield. the others refused treatment. numerous and said the whole situation was completely avoidable. >> there is no need to run. just pull over. they're lucky they didn't get killed. >> pennsgrove, trang do, cbs-3, "eyewitness news." and employees at delaware county memorial hospital will return to work tomorrow.

all 370 nurses and technical employees at the hospital in drexel hill walked out sunday morning, they cited unfair labor practices, the company that runs the hospital lost out the to unionized employees until tomorrow claiming that the temporary replacement staff was required to work through at least five days. >> aarp and hospital groups have sent letters to congress opposing the new republican plan to repeal and replace the affordable care act. correspondent craig boswell on capitol hill where the legislation also receiving pretty strong resistance from some lawmakers within the gop. >> fight to repeal and replace obamacare, its first hurdle. >> i know everybody's tired. >> the house energy and commerce committee has been debating the issue for more than 24 hours straight, and it is still going. >> the bill unraveled the aca's protecting individuals with pre-existing conditions and in many ways. >> but the warning signs said

the gop replacement plan could be in trouble for coming from republicans. not democrats. congressman dave brad, part of the house freedom caucus, which opposes the gop plan. >> the product we got to get right. we don't have the product right in this thing. >> president trump will host some members of the house freedom caucus at the white house this evening for a night of bowling and persuasion. republican leaders say every gop member has run on a promise to repeal and replace obamacare. and when it is time for a final vote, they'll be there. >> i believe when people sit and read this bill, and understanded that this is phase one in a process, you're going to find much more support as we go through. >> even if the bill makes it through the house, it will be another uphill fight in the senate. >> no one likes this bill. hospitals, doctors, governors, conservatives, liberals. >> republican senator tom cotton tweeted the house healthcare bill can't pace senate without major changes to my friends in house, pause, start over, get it right don't get it fast.

>> is there? >> i had the working barbie. she had on like a business suit, and then could you like switch it out. and then i had her going out outfit. >> and a briefcase. >> very cool. >> talking maybe snow tomorrow? >> looks like we will see snow across the area really poor timing too, right during the morning commute. so reduce visibilities, make roadways slick. plan ahead for the extra time. nice out right now, turn the winds down a little bit it would be even better. live look in center city, philadelphia, bright sunshine, blue skies, as far as the eye can see. 64 degrees, but those west winds, those are hardy at around 21 miles per hour. temperatures right now, though, mild across the area, 60 in the lehigh valley, to mid 60s down the shore, 60 in reading right now, but boy the winds are whipping, wind gusts upward close to 40 miles per hour in reading over the last, gust to go 37 in philly. storm scan3, though, nice and quiet. it is getting little nap before it has to do some extra work as we head in late tonight, through the day tomorrow. but for this evening,

increasing clouds, still mild, breeze will start to wayne specially after sunset tonight. then overnight tonight, we will see some rain, some snow showers developing late, low temperature 37 degrees. it will occur as we head into the morning hours tomorrow. winter weather advisory in effect north and west of the city kicks in in the poconos 8:00 p.m. this evening, kicks in for the lehigh valley and northwestern suburbs, as we head into midnight. what to expect on the roads tomorrow, a bunch of trouble. widespread snow for your morning commute. lunch hour not too bad. passing snow shower, but conversely for your evening commute. likely to see some snowfall redeveloping, scattered in nature, but it could greatly reduce your visibility for your friday evening commute. what to expect? wintery mix in and around the city developing by about 5:00 a.m. then quickly transitioning to all snow for your commute. likely stead any nature, which will allow for some quick accumulation, then we will see some afternoon snow squawls developing, future radar going to show us what's in store, precipitation breaking out first north and west of the city, then that bands kinds of

expanding and spreading its way southbound until 6:00 in the morning, so starting to pick up along the i95 corridor. see that? that's all snow coming down the 8:00 hour. stretching into south jersey, and then through the 9:00 hour down the shore, as well. but even could be a bit heavy at times into the 10:00 hour. primarily down the shore, letting up to the north and west, then by late morning, uniform precipitation will move off shore. but check this out. into the 4:00 hour, there is the chance for the snow squawls moving through, especially in philly, north and west, and then as we head into the second half of the evening, all of this activity finally quieting down and clearing out by midnight tomorrow. the first snowfall accumulations, this is just projection, what to plan for, across south jersey, and our shore points, about coating to inch of snowfall. i think along the i95 corridor, about one to three innings, as you head up toward berks county, lehigh valley closer to two, three, 4 inches, up toward the poconos, potentially pick up five to 6 inches of snowfall, and that is through the day tomorrow. but remember, in the poconos, we could see as little as

3 inches, as much as six, in berks county, lehigh valley, as little as one, potentially up to four, in philly and suburbs could see as little as zero, potentially to up three, talking one to two where we will be at by the end of the event. at the shore see as little as zero but as much as one to 2 inches of snowfall. but again it will be the timing that real will really have the big impact. we dry out as we head into the upcoming weekend bringing forward with some 30's, isn't that nice, mother nature. then we have another storm system to watch. the one on sunday we were looking at will stay to the south. on tuesday, maybe not so much. >> oh, couple of whammie's there. >> you're just bringing us joy all over the place. we will be on the air early, "eyewitness news" this morning will begin at 4:00 a.m. yep, 4:00 a.m., we'll have the latest forecast, and the traffic reports with any impact on your morning commute. join us again, starting at, once again, 4:00 a.m. 4:00 a.m.? >> 4:00 a.m.
