6:01 am
inside. >> days like there is let's try to get you out the door as safely as possible, you know what? it bears repeating you have to be careful and cautious in this. >> bridged after warnings, winter storm warnings still posted. >> now he can stands back all the way to chester county and berks and then up to the lehigh valley and poconos. so blizzard conditions are very possible in those areas through the next couple of hours. notice they last until 6:00 p.m. whole 12 hour window, for blizzard like conditions, opportunity here. until this storm begins to pull away. massive storm folks. remember yesterday, two separate pieces now those pieces have come together. they've joined, and merged and joined forces to create this monster after storm system. as we zero in on this area locally precipitation is heavy right now. this is a snapshot of storm
6:02 am
scan, finding along good portion of i-95, either freezing rain or sleet mixing in. that is waist going to help limit the snowfall totals in the city. and you're basically just stuck in a soaking rain to the south of that. darker shades of purple indicate heavier bands every snow just north of that. and that's where we start to hit a sweet spot of snowfall expectation, have the snowfall map just bill later in the show. but be prepared to shovel a heck of a lot of snow away in those areas before it is all said and done. temperatures are kind of different, 20's, 30's, even four's, hence the difference in the precipitation type. but talking about a major storm here today guys. extremely hazardous travel through specially blowing and drifting snow. so i know you mentioned you got string every usual use out there, walk us through them. >> all right. thanks so much, katie. looking outside right now, weaver an accident 95 north near route 420, pulled all the way off to the side. as thee vehicles are moving on by, those headlights go by, you can see how much snow and slush is actually out there.
6:03 am
then we have rain and sleet and ice and it is freezing on the roadways, leaving us with visibility issues, it is slick conditions, we've got cars spinning out. we have jackknife tractor-trailers, seeing this since i basically got in this morning. i was in very early in the 2:00 hour. so, ever since then, we have been seeing like i said, problem after problem. the snow continues to come down. disable tractor-trailer here, schuylkill westbound at the vine, ramp from 30th street, you can see, pulled all the way off. now a lot of times what will happen, too, we have conditions like this, we will have one person get into a problem area, pull off to the side. the other person sees it too late. puts on their brake, slams on their brake consideration not stop and go to the back of them or goes off into another lane or hit the barricade, whatever the case may be, you can see how many issues can get out there when we have driving conditions like this. it can really pose so many problems for us. 422 near collegeville looking here, kind of dark shot, kind of grainy shot. can't really see. but what you can see is how this snow on the sides of the surfaces lingers offer to the roadways, you can barely tell
6:04 am
what's the side of the road and what's actually the road surface. plus we still have the accident in moorestown new jersey 295 northbound past route 73. so jim still very, very busy and dangerous out there. >> watch out, meisha and i both slid through intersections this morning on the drive in. slow down. slow down. with less than week before spring, winter certainly making a come back with what we hope is this final appearance. >> hopefully, final, more like blizzard in allentown where we sent "eyewitness news" reporter train dough, very useful information all morning, but i have to ask you, has starbucks opened yet? >> braking news rahel and jim, starbucks has opened. so i'll be quick with this live shot. you guys, i feel kind of bad for my fellow reporters, i've heard pat and joe talk about how closer to the city getting hit with sleet. this out here winter wonder land. getting very, very lovely snow. this is the kind of snow that's awesome for sledding, awesome for snow boarding,
6:05 am
really light, and powdery, and just really, really pretty. so really lucking out here in the lehigh valley if you are a big snow fan. i'm not even big snow fan. i make that very well known. but it is actually very lovely out here. but take a look, this is kind of one of the main intersection here, in allentown, and pretty much roads are getting snow covered. all morning you've seen the snowplows, allentown has about 50 plows just tackling this city. but even as they come through, they just get covered once again. and as we know, even though this is pretty much snow up here, it can get very slippery if you're driving on that. so because we are stationed here, in our spot downtown, did talk to some drivers. take a look at this guy, he had some real great advice. >> driving conditions are slow. they are out there plowing, major roads, secondary roads are going to be a little slick. so i would say everybody take
6:06 am
their time. >> definitely great advice. and what we're seeing up here is a lot of people going to work, so not a lot of snow lovers out here just yet. they're still snuggled up in bed, very jealous of them. but guys i'll jump over there to the starbucks, so see you guys the next time. sending back to you in the studio. >> thank you, trang. >> she earned it. >> yes. >> headed now to chester county where residents are getting late season dose of winter wetter. >> "eyewitness news" reporter joe holden in westtown township to check out the snow there. earlier so we saw you getting hit by the sleet pretty hard. how is it looking now? >> i can still hear it. >> it is beautiful sleet out here, really, really nice, makes the face feel, you know, like needle you in the face, the winds is how long, as well. so the plow guy is out here in this wawa parking lot here in westtown township. and to give you some idea of what we're looking at, plowing
6:07 am
the sleet. he made a path before we got here around 4:00 a.m. and you can tell, i mean, just from the build-up, this is all sleet that's come down within the last few hours. makes for some really big boulder, big chinks every ice here. this is what's going to be difficult as you think about shoveling your walkway ways and your sidewalks, because this is the stuff that really pulls on your muscles as you're trying to shovel it. west chester pike hine me, traffic has been relatively calm. it really not a whole ton of people out, as you might expect at this hour, because of the forecast. but really some interesting weather conditions here just because the sleet is coming down as a clip and you can hear it as i talk. so far though i see some of our partners at news radio reporting spin outs, and
6:08 am
various conditions, myfoxphilly.com with people getting around. having seen any of that. , seeing ton of people who are out at this early hour, to started a dressing the road conditions, and the plow guys. so, sends it back to you guys. >> joe, if it makes you feel any better i know a lot of people pay a lot of money for that needle experience, so you're getting it for free this morning. >> for free. >> you'll have a glow. thanks, joe, stay warm. philadelphia parking thought is warning drivers if you park along emergency snow routes, your car may be towed away. crews need snow emergency roads cleared so the plows can do their jobs, for a list of the emergency snow routes you can find it on line. coverage of the winter storm continues. >> pat gallen on the storm watch in philly. hi, pat. >> reporter: hi, yes, we're live in bensalem. and it is still sleeting and it is still coming inside ways right in the face. that's what we are looking forward to this morning throughout the delaware
6:09 am
valley. it is whipping, it is right in the face, every time i turn toward this camera, i get the same thing. it is beautiful out here. guys, you're warm, right? >> and guys, we've got some big problems outside with a little bit of everything depending on where you are, heavy snow, heavy rain, heavy sleet and coastal impact, as well. we will break these down as we track the storm coming up. >> ♪ slow ride ♪ >> so one of those things that i think bears repeating this morning. that one, jim donovan, avoid dancing at all costs, you can't see him right now. >> we will be here for eight hours. >> so things will get real crazy around here. but also, we do want to give you another reminder, if you have to be out there, we know some people have to get to work. so take it slow. this is what happens. take it slow on your way out there. we will be right back.

6:13 am
>> jim you are also having issues this morning? >> i went through two red lights, and driving, i mean, i just went flying through, i know meisha. >> so both jim and meisha, definitely not easing getting around in our area this morning. >> but our crews are heading north, just take it easy on the roads. reporter pat gallen live in bensalem right now, possibly within reach after bear claw, are you near the panera?
6:14 am
>> i mean, weaver 12 hours to go here. >> there it is. >> guys, we found it. >> sleet, freezing rain. ahh, just so close to panera, opens at 6:30. >> oh, it will be a warm bear claw! >> before we get to panera bread, and get a nice, yes, it will be a beautifully warm bear claw, can't wait. before that, cold, sleet, freezing rain, right off my face, as you can see, and as you can probably hear it, we're up here in bensalem, street road hine me, mechanicsville road up yonder. and people are driving at fairly decent rate of speed. i would not suggest it, because while we were on the road, a little bit slick, a little bit slippery. if you have four wheel drive obviously it helps. i never thought i would say this, but i'm actually kind of jealous of trang do up in allentown, because at least she is getting snow. and that's beautiful, fun, this is the ugly stuff. this is the gross stuff that's coming at me.
6:15 am
and whipping us in the face and in the mouth. and it is causing this, like, this steam, this slick sheen over top of the snow that fell earlier this morning, and then we've got all of this on top of t so we started off with like a nice snowball-type snow when we were on aramingo avenue in port richmond. now it is just turning into this fine powder as it continues to mix. so i'm going to go over there, and i can smell it, they're baking, it is the wind coming at me, so i can smell the panera bread. i can smell the bear claw. so i'm going to go get my hands on one, hot coffee. really just relax. because i'm done, right? am i done? >> far from it. >> see if you look at the temperatures, 31, 32, he's right on that line, been watching the whole thing all morning, so yes, with the snow, it is like on the edge. >> right. absolutely. we do want to point out of course having so much fun, because we have to to stay sane, but of course this could be dangerous weather. so we do want to get over to katie
6:16 am
fehlinger. >> careful on the roads for sure. absolutely, the theme of the morning for us, as we know that many of you do actually have to leave the house today. because you're essential personnel for whatever reason. actually turn our focus quickly here down the shore where the high wind warning is the concern for the next couple of hours here. gusts peaking as high as 06 miles per hour, and sussex county across the bay then newspaper east central new jersey out to the shore point. so high wind warning there. and in addition coastal flood warnings, that actually goes into effect in about 45 minutes or so for the next two high tide cycles, morning and afternoon high tides, moderate coastal flooding. so, that's the concern with heavy rain pounding down at this hour. we did see little snow at the onset with the storm in these areas. but it has since turned over to rain. we think for the most part will stay rain for the rest of the day. looking at the current winds speeds, everywhere, it is pretty impressive. seeing them flirt with 30-mile per hour sustained right now in wilmington, 25-mile per
6:17 am
hour northeast winds, in philadelphia. that is rough stuff. of course we've seen from the field reporters it does not feel good to be out in this weather right now. so again, if you can, stay home. definitely would like you to. again coastal impact, cold rain, heavy in its intensity for the rest of the day here, at least through lunchtime before it begins to gradually pull away from south to north. but the wind gust also get you. specking them to peak again as high as 06 miles per hour with scattered power outages, also, as a concernment and yes, your eyes did not deceive you. that will was our very own chief meteor gist, kate bilo, joining us for team coverage. >> coast getting hammered by the heavy rain, strong gusty wind, gusting over 50 or 06 miles per hour, and the winds not as strong inland, but gusts over 30, 35, will blow the snow around, that's why we have the blizzard warnings in effect for areas north and west of philadelphia. now of course the story this morning has been the sleet. and that rain-snow line. that's something we've been talking about really with this
6:18 am
storm since last friday that the rain snow line would be crucial stor storm scan3 not rey accurately depicting where that; because you have to look at the warm layer aloft. even though it looks right now as though heavy snow is falling if philadelphia, real a sleet bomb out there. head to the north and west where your heaviest know is with heavy rain across south jersey and delaware. zoom in again, see the sleet and snow line so close to philadelphia, it will be fluctuating through the day as we try to draw colder air in, once the storm begins to intensify bit more undergoing rapid intense if i case, will try to pull down some of its own cold air. definitely coal enough for plane snow in allentown, reading, lancaster, philadelphia is at three it, but the warm layer aloft creating threat for sleet and freezing rain here this morning. so you can see how close that line is, heavy snow continuing, especially to the north and west, lehigh valley and the poconos will be our jackpot zone with this storm through the rest of the morning. now we get a check on the roads with meisha. >> good morning, great to see
6:19 am
you, yes, looking outside, snow coming down as kate mentioned. i can tell you it is causing some major problems for us out on the roadways, so looking at the blue route. kind of giving you a idea of what you will be looking out if you head naught your vehicles, one thing i want to say, i have to gave you a big thumbs-up, aren't too many vehicles out there right now, usually on tuesday at this time, it is very, very busy. so some people have to get out there. if you have to, take it very, very slow. actually what we're seeing. blue route near ridge pike, blue route has caused a loft problems this morning, by the way. accident near route had 20, looking okay there. we did have disabled tractor-trailer on the schuylkill, but cleared now. accident 295 north before 195. this is in hamilton township, vehicle went off the road. left lane blocked. it is getting little slow around that area. not to mention the fact still have the accident in moorestown, new jersey, 295 north past route 73. so you can see just string every issues still out there on the roadways this morning, jim, rahel, back to you.
6:20 am
>> thank you, meisha the the storm creating misery at philadelphia international airport. >> air force spokeswoman marry, thank you so much for being with us, now. >> good morning. >> good morning. so, we know the start of it, i think yesterday, how many flights as of now, 6:20, how many flights have been cans smelled. >> i think more the question how many are running, we've had hundreds that have been canceled, delta is the only major airline that was schedule to fly this morning. and even there, supposed to go out at 6:00 have been delayed because of the freezing rain that we're seeing. >> and obviously there is a mix of freezing rain, and then snow, depending where you are in our region. what's the timetable on clearing the runways later today and getting flights up and running? >> our runways are clear and open. we've been using brooms and plows to move the slush really off the runways. and we are putting chemical down of course. the airlines had announced schedules yesterday, canceled flights. american canceled hundreds,
6:21 am
and will not resume until 5:00 . so really the only passengers who should be -- who should not know their schedule are those who delta who think their flights are going, in delta trying to get their flights out. but this freezing rain now is stalling them. >> yes. well, thank you very much, mary. we will check back in with you later in the day. good luck out there at philadelphia international airport. >> and hours before the storm, president trump got a briefing on preparations later he tweeted everyone along the east coast be safe and listen to local officials as a major winter storm approaches. he also gave link on the storm from the national weather service. >> there are hundreds of school closingsment you can find the information at the bottom of your screen. and also, on cbsphilly.com this morning. >> absolutely. also, we have a live team of reporters all across the region. a least ya? >> it's been relently morning here in reading, coming up in just a few minute, i'll have how people are bunkering down and weathering this storm.
6:25 am
>> you need a little patience if you're on the roads. >> specially berks county, currently under blizzard warning, could see more than a foot of snow. let's head over to west reading where we find "eyewitness news" reporter alicia nieves. good morning. >> good morning, more of the same out here, still snowing, still coming down, we still have about a half foot of snow. there is about 30 plows or at least two dozen or so out and about salting, and plowing. but i want to take you inside into this diner, really one of the only diners open in west reading, only visit people who have to be out and b we have rebecca here at this diner. just telling us a little bit about why you guys are open this morning? >> well, we never close at the west reading diner.

trang? >> reporter: it is a beautiful winter wonder land here in allentown, i'm trang do live in the lehigh valley with a look at conditions. meisha? >> and as you know, trang, the snow is coming down, and it is dangerous, problem after problem out on the roadways, and all of those problem spot coming up. first we'll take a quick break, stay right where you are. welcome to your health with joan lunden presented by the centers for disease control and prevention. hi, i'm joan lunden. diabetes is an epidemic that is sweeping our country and sadly it is not just affecting adults. it's also affecting our children. we are pleased to be joined by dr. ann albright director of the cdc's division of diabetes translation who is here to shed some light on this really
6:28 am
alarming subject. how serious is this? >> type 1 diabetes is still the most common form in youth but we are seeing alarming growth in the number of kids with type 2 diabetes. it's certainly related to the rise in obesity. unfortunately, many parents are unaware of this so their children are unaware. >> what are the other factors contributing? >> type 2 diabetes runs in families. so does unhealthy eating habits and other lifestyle habits. >> as a mom of seven, this is just so concerning. what can we do to try to stop this? >> a great place to start is to develop a plan as a whole family. you certainly want to work on increasing water intake. you might have to work on that with your kids. eat more fruits and vegetables. certainly find ways to make favorite foods healthier. then really make physical activity more fun. >> get out there and bicycle with them or play tag with them. get them off the sofa. >> that's it. >> that's so difficult but so
6:29 am
important. are children who have parents with type 2 diabetes more likely to also develop it? >> certainly these things do run in families. but it also is important to know that if you establish these habits together, they're much more likely to be sustained. set a new norm as a family. >> i love that. set a new norm. a lot of us need to work on that. thank you so much. it's really wonderful though that families have this resource to turn to because it is so important to the future of our youth to stop the diabetes epidemic from becoming even more prevalent. it really needs though to be addressed as a family affair. for more information visit cdc.gov/diabetestv. thanks for watching. i'm joan lunden. >> sponsored by naccd with support from the centers

6:33 am
delaware valley t continues to be a heavy or moderate snowfall, across most of southeast pa. we have however seen some mixing taking place here in philadelphia. and that is what essentially will help limit the snowfall total expectations here, but you will hit a jackpot for sure north and which is of, that at least a foot will fall chester, bucks county north of. that will now later in the broadcast, we'll have another update or another view of our eyewitness weather snowfall map. but nor now, blizzard warnings in the red shaded areas, hot pink for the whipper -- winter storm warnings. winter weather advisory still technically posted in atlantic, couldn't county for example. but again it is mainly cold rain with wind and coastal flooding as your primary concern as you head into those southern most counties. the snow time line is such. give it until at least noon guys. still got lot of time left for the heaviest of the snow to fall. it will continue to mix south and east, but the wind continues, and then that snow also begins to taper from noon to about 5:00 as go from south
6:34 am
to north. soap, meisha, the lehigh valley poconos will be last to see the snowflakes, at least the heaviest snowflakes. then they'll end up doing the best with snow totals too. >> katie, thank you so much. yes, looking at the roadways, we've been talking about this all morning long, it is just getting worse. it is not getting any better certainly. so if you are thinking of maybe hanging out, going out there little later, i'll let you know still seeing some problems. west goshen area, near west cher test, 202 past paoli pike, looks like hard to see, but, no, still out there. yep, we saw this accident out there again 202 north pace paoli pike. it is getting very slow moving around this area. just because you can see on the roadways, how tough that looks. you can't see it up close how much snow or ice you have on the roadways, but snailing crawling lining that you know how slow moving it is going and why, and it is dangerous out there. because that far seeing a lot of problems. the good news is a the loft problems we're seeing on the roadways have been moving out of the way fairly quickly, good thing, 295 north past
6:35 am
route 73, one example of that. 295 south past 130, ramp still partially blocked. also starting to see some speed sensors go down little bit because we are getting more vehicles out there number one. for those of that you have to get out there, two, we have speed restrictions? play, 295 north between 195, another accident, left lane block there. and also, we have a ton to discuss in the worlds of mass transit. we will be talking about that coming up in the next 15 minute or so. jim, rahel, back to you. >> thank you shall meisha. chester county taking a beating from the storm this morning. and so was "eyewitness news" reporter joe holden. >> joe is live in westtown township. you are getting hit hard by the sleet earlier. i want to ask who are you with? is it adam fox? >> it is adam fox. >> how are you -- >> just said that it is nasty out here. to quote adam. and i have to agree. the sleet is stinking, pat gat end is here at the diner, alicia sounds like she is at a diner.
6:36 am
we're at wawa west chester pike. we were talking to sean brady. he is the one task with plowing the parking lot here at the wawa, just on the west side of route 352. he's made couple of passes, and he explains why this sleet is so tough to deal with. have a listen. >> we prefer the snow than the sleet. this ice cakes up, gets hard, gets packed in. the snow is fluffy early on, but this is my second time on this lot tonight. and the ice is just accumulating on top of what we heard earlier. >> we saw it right after we plowed it the first time, and this ice just laid right on top of it. >> so here's the strategy. when trying to shovel all of this mess, this will be heavier, i remember storms where trying to shovel sleet shall it is like quicksand.
6:37 am
here comes sean brady right now, and just take a look at that. as this is rolling off the front of his plow. again, just all the more difficult on the equipment, and he's doing a heck of a good job. good job, brothers, sean brady everybody. so keeping an eye on things on the road, it is quiet. i'll see you back here in about a half hour with the latest. reporting live in westtown township, joe holden, cbs-3 "eyewitness news." >> thanks, joe. >> nasty out there. >> says adam fox. >> look at the temperature, 31, 30. now where the snow really coming down up in the lehigh val. >> i and allentown the plow trucks are having trouble, just even keeping up with the snow. that of course that's where we find "eyewitness news" reporter trang do. good morning, trang. >> hi, good morning. welcome, you guys, to trang's cafe. i did get my starbucks coffee, and i'm just chilling underneath this ledge here. but you guys can definitely take a look out on the street here in dunn town allentown. take a look, the snow continuing to fall as it has
6:38 am
been for several hours now. we are talking to people who have been working out here all night. they say it really started around 2:00 to ramp up the first snowflakes fell around 8:30, 9:00 last night. but you can see, even though it is very fine, and misty, it is definitely coating the roads. we've seen so many snow flus out here pretty much the grain of them going through the street. as soon as they come through, the streets are just covered once again. so seeing pretty slippery road conditions, even people with four wheel drive, just be slow and definitely take your time. as i mentioned, lot of people surprisingly out here in downtown allentown working, people at the star bus, also people getting a head start on the snow. take a listen. >> i don't mind the snow. but in this time of the year, it is like ready for spring, trying get rid of. >> this but can't really argue with mother nature, right?
6:39 am
>> exactly. now, you know, we are starting to see some of that sleet that s other report remembers talking about, mainly getting really light, loverly fluffy snow. we are get being that, which is why i'm underneath this ledge here, and enjoying my coffee. so, hats off to up guys in the studio. i'll catch up with you later. >> trang has figured it all out. she has beat the system. i like it, trang. >> thanks, trang. you can check the forecast any time it is at your fingertips, as well as free cbs weather app on itunes and google play. >> still ahead, kate bilo times out the snow, when the snow will stop falling in certain areas. >> this is the scene all up and down the east coast, people got ready for this monster storm. live in new york with a look at conditions there, right now, when we come back.
6:43 am
