live from the cbs broadcast center in philadelphia this is cbs3 "eyewitness news". spinning out and digging out. the snow and ice is dangerous and tricky combination people tried to get to work and to school on this day after the storm. the cold temperatures are making it that much harder to dig out. good afternoon everyone i'm jim donovan. >> i'm rahel solomon. "eyewitness news" report joe holden is live in philadelphia's fairmount neighborhood with how people are doing after the storm. joe, good afternoon. >> reporter: rahel, jim, good afternoon it is actually

flurrying out here right now and it is cold. i can tell that you for a fact. and the conditions are rough as you can see here we are at brown and uber streets in the fairmount section, and what has already been packed down by travel of course is a very tough slushy icy mess. i spoke to the philadelphia streets commissioner. he tells me just within the last half hour they continue to address the main arteries, the side streets like the one i'm standing in but he says that that sleet that came down such a clip yesterday really gave them a curve ball, of course, the story today, people have been digging out in force let's go ahead and take ugh to the city's lawn crest section and northeast philadelphia where we caught up in the big dig. some waited a day to get to wo work. that possibly proved to be quite the challenge. double trouble if you will. most cars and sidewalks not touched yesterday were caked in frozen solid mass. we've seen all types used to dig

out all tools and kinds and shapes. even saw a guy using a pick ax on my drive in this morning. of course a tough job many neighbors length a hand and some muscle to those who weren't up to the challenge. >> a lot of work. that's why we have neighbors to help out. >> i kind of wanted to call out of work. it's an older lady i have to take care of her and i don't mind. >> reporter: meanwhile parents of philadelphia school children expressed frustration at schoo s on time. no delays classes were not canceled buses were forced to navigate around massive piles of snow, and it was a tight squeeze in some locations with non existent lanes of travel. now we do know from previous stories the school district of course in consultation with all of their stake holders the safety consideration is always paramount. but parents though still tell cbs3 they were a little bit

stunned. >> my gosh, look at this. the ice. i'm going to try to make it. >> reporter: we did speak to the archdiocese of physical. spokesman tells they're two hour delay in the city of course was inn corping the fact some of travel would be difficult. but he did add that, of course, safety is paramount in their concerns a lot of decisions are made as to whether to cancel, go to a two how delay or open on normal time. so a lot in this equation. we are working on more of this you'll see that part of the story starting on "eyewitness news" at 5:00. reporting live in a very chilly and flurries are out here fairmount section of philadelphia, i'm joe holden, cbs3 "eyewitness news". >> apparently still very messy day after the storm. joe, all right, thank you see you then. dig out continues all across the city. chopper three over manayunk this morning workers were spotted shoveling leftover snow from the inside of a few buildings under

construction on burn side street. check out this vitter yo from gas station in south philly. it appears the weight of the heavy snow forced the roof to give in and washed quite a bit of damage. this is on columbus boulevard and tasker street. no word on any injuries due to the collapse. we do know one person has died as a result of a crash in delaware county and a roadway is shut down. this is chopper three over the scene at the intersection of baltimore pike and creek road in chadds ford. one of drivers lost control as they drove over ice heading northbound on route 1. before crashing into another vehicle heading southbound. the driver of the second vehicle died. authorities closed the road for the investigation. well residents of allentown have cleaning up to do today. what was once snow is now ice. snow fell for almost 20 straight hours yesterday in lehigh coun county. schools and offices in the area remain closed today. "eyewitness news" spoke with some people who say the extra snow day in that area was for the best. >> you can fall, trip, nick can

happen. you want your kids safe and at home. >> there's no point taking any risks. let them have a good time. give everybody a little break. and it isn't safe. >> officials say the black ice and freezing temperatures have caused the roads to be slick there drivers are warned to be careful when venturing out. and students in berks county school districts are enjoying the second snow day some areas got more than a foot of snow. after the snow stopped falling yesterday many residents began to clear out. the storm forced several businesses to close. normally bustling penn street in west reading saw people shoveling through several inches of snow. >> pretty. no it's windy and now the snow is getting hard to shovel. it's getting solid. >> and icy roads are now a big concern in that area as well. thousands remain without power in delaware thanks to the storm and now peco is lending a hand. employees of the power company to assist electric companies in delaware restore power. delaware was hit with combination of snow, sleet, wind and rain yesterday.

trees toppled on to homes were mill ming ton and ice coated power lines collapsed last check more than 11,000 people in new castle county are still without power. judging from central to southern new jersey the coast took a real beating from this storm. this is what the storm left behind in ocean city cape may county. drivers there carefully navigating the flooded streets. atlantic city driver was rescued after getting stuck in high waters near the inlet part of the town. much of that has now receded. and the icy conditions across the area are going to stick around a bit. that's thanks to his blast of cold air. meteorologist katie fehlinger is in the cbs3 weather sent to tell us how long these freezing temperatures are going to last. katie, i hope you say not too long. >> well, you know -- [ laughter ] >> it looks like it's going to be little bit of time here. i do think we'll start to see at least rebound with every passing day but normal highs about 52, 53 degrees or so. we're not coming close to that for the next couple of days. now, with time at least start to see snow melt away for now though we'll start off with a

view here on skycam3 look very closely we had joe's. >> reporter:ing flurries you got to look closely and it will help to look at the darker buildings there. but there are some flakes flying through the shot. tough to see because they're very tiny. a little flakes out there with this much colder air in place. but as we throw the current conditions over top of this westerly wind flow at 23 miles an hour makes that 24-degree temperature which is cold enough feel more like nine we've got a winter weather advisory posted now until 8:00 p.m. for all of those counties shaded in the purple, and that could mean that with a little burst avenue quick snow squall like we're finding currently on storm scan you may even end up with a brief coating to an inch or so around those specific counties. now, anyone will see these snow squalls. they have begun to overtake the delaware valley they will be scattered in nature the rest of the day. but that in itself could lead to poor visible. a general synopsis what you can expect the rest of the day. talking about the icy roads with frozen slush and snow the temperatures will not break eye

above the 20s today. but as we mentioned, it will eventually get better from here. so coming up later on, how warm will we eventually going get and also we are tracking a threat of new snow down the road. i'll let you know when just a little later on, jim. >> don't want to hear about that. thanks katie investigators working to determine the cause of early morning apartment building fire that sent a family of four to the hospital. the fire broke out around 1:15 on the 7500 block of thorn avenue. that's in east mt. airy. the fire started in the second floor corner apartment that house add family of four. the family was already out of the building when firefighters arrived. at least one man was hurt and was taken to einstein medical center with unknown injuries. neighbor described the scary seen overnight. i did see him run from the building with his wife in his arms. he put her in the car right here. and then the children come running out right behind there. big urn fern know. big blazing popping inferno. the whole block was covered with smoke. >> when all the building has eight apartments red cross is

helping those displaced residents. president trump takes to twitter to denounce the leaking of his 2005 tax returns. the news comes as the president prepares for a day trip to michigan and tepp ten. craig boswell is at the white house with more on the president's busy day. president trump left the white house on his way to michigan for a meetings with auto makers. prior to his rival general motors announced this morning it plans to add or retain another 900 jobs across three michigan facilities over the next year. before leaving d.c., president trump sent out tweet calling his leaked tax returns fake news. >> came in the mail over the transom, and there's absolutely nothing improper about journalists if you haven't solicited something getting it over the transom by the way let me point out it's entirely possible donald sent this to me. >> david cay johnston unveil the first two pages of mr. trauma pops return on a show. the show president trump paid $38 million in taxes on income of more than 150 millions

back now "eyewitness news" with video people are still talking about. suv crash noose the roof of a home. this camera captured the moment that it took place in the city in china on fry day. watch as the car loses control and skids head first into a roof at the same level as the road. both the homeowner and driver are set to be uninjury i think we were talking boise earlier jim, apparently the driver said he hit the gas instead of the brake. which is quite an accident to me. >> yes. >> my goodness. >> people are hitting the gas, the brake everything else to get out of these snow -- >> get out of these roads. >> no kidding. >> everything is frozen in place. >> exactly. that's so tough. outside our building yesterday i saw gentleman get stuck in the snow drifts people were trying drive that was that unget huge mounds of snow with tire tax through them. you can get through them. it's still treacherous out there. is it as harsh as yesterday when it comes to the hazardous travel, no, but it is still an issue. for a couple of different

reasons. you can't necessarily get away with a big storm like this being one-day event. always going to be aftermath that ensues we'll take you back in time here first. just take look how much we end up up with very short list i'm sure you can imagine some of the area snow totals boy does it run the gamut from ocean county 4-inches in brick township. to the philadelphia office of emergency management at 6.8-inches. officially at philly international that will go down as the storm oat he toll 6-inches even. and then up at brakes lee jack frost big boulder 21-incheinchef fresh snow fell at th ski resor. the storm continues to pull away you can see with the detail of the clouds, the trailing front with this. but at this point it's all about the aftermath. the wrap around moisture still bringing in snow showers. we showed you philadelphia camera a moment ago. another place if you look along the rely there are very light snowflakes falling here this is in burnville in berks county we'll continue to see in scattered fashion anywhere even

though the winter wet advisory is specific to the northwest half of our area anyone of us could see a snow shower or squall. the difference where you've got the winter wet advisory it might actually lead to accumulation very minimal one but that's where the advisory is coming in. meanwhile current wind speeds, they're pretty impressive and noticeable. it's going to make it feel so much colder to you any time that win blows and it's persistent. it has been all morning. it will continue to be so the rest of the day. into the 20s the wind speeds sustained wind but gusts could peek in this shaded area as high as 45 or 50 miles an hour. so that's the southeast half the region now including philadelphia on through all of delaware, and the majority at least central and southern new jersey. until 8:00 p.m. it remains in effect. we factor in the wind this is what it feels like. brutal stuff it folic the singer digits early this morning. it continues to feel like the single digits even into the early afternoon. southern new jersey more like the teens which again not much better but it is little less

harsh for through. how does the rest of the day pan out? watch for icing on the roadways folks. windy frigid conditions will he not hit the freezing mark a couple of snow showers and our squalls to briefly reduce your visible. keep that in mine. later tonight it does stay nice and clear but still breezy for us out there as we drop down to 18 degrees. meanwhile we've got holiday down the road here's st. patrick's day our leprechaun expecting to see sunshine out there on frid friday. through the daylight hours but that evening and we mentioned this just before the break new clipper system that will move in. right now looks like it will be bringing us a mix of rain and snow showers across the region as a whole. meanwhile, spring is around the corner. i promise you. the vernal i quick with knocks takes place on monday. 12 hours, nine minutes 15 seconds of daylight to be exact as we usher in officially the new season. in the meantime we promise you'll warm up i wouldn't call it warm he'sing up back to more typical temperatures next tuesday. >> i'll take it. >> thank you katie. the cereal company cherrios
