>> carol erickson with the pennsylvania spca is in the house. good morning. >> good morning to you. i've got joey here, i'm feeding him, also warning the direction that his tail is wagging. it is pretty, i think it is pretty standard. but you know what? that's not always the case with dogs. and i want to talk today about something real interesting. this is a study that they've done with a lot of research with dogs wearing vests and monitor their heart rate and that sort of thing. showing the direction that a dog was its tail. indicate how that dog is feeling, and more than that, it also indicates to the watching dogs, how that dog is feeling. so let me show you some video. this is pennsylvania spca.
7:53 am
again the wag to the left or right is the dog who is doing the wagging left or right. i notice a left bias on this wag. goes a little more to the left. that means that the dog is stressed, that they're in a unfamiliar environment. a dog watching this or person watching this would pick it up and they would see the wagging and see the direction. again it is the direction of the wag from the dog that is doing the wagging. and these dogs who were outfitted with the best to look at silhouette of wagging dogs tails, became more anxious themselves when they saw a dog whose tail was wagging to the wagging dog's left. to the right, that is associated if you walk up to your dog and you see them, you'll probably see them wagging the tail to the right. that means that somebody familiar, i'm cool, i'm calm, i'm collected. yes, so it is a good way that you can take a look at a dog, and even un familiar dog, with
7:54 am
your dog, because your dog is picking up cues all the time. >> researchers figure that out? >> absolutely. also not something that the dogs can fool. they can't say ya i'll just wave to my left. no, this is done sub consciously. >> this was done controlled by the different hemispheres of the brain that would sort of go along with the anxiety or the feeling of calm. so again. >> important to know. >> if you see right is right, all is good, right with the world. so you can kind of think of it that way. >> but again from the dog who is wagging right. so looking at it you will see it coming from the other direction. but think about it for little while, and -- >> in perspective. >> so it is something there. always trying to communicate. you know, they say that some dogs with no tails at all, that may be harder for those kinds of dogs to communicate to other dogs, because they can't really see the direction of the wag of the tail. >> so they are talking to each other? >> all the time. misconception, i think, that all wagging tails are happy
7:55 am
tails. >> that's what i thought. >> yes, but they are not. sometimes it can be a fear, they're really agitated. really what wagging shows is arousal of emotion. so depending on which way. now there is tail is going to this dog's left there is dog would say i'm in unfamiliar area. the tail goes the other direction, hey, i love you. you're my owner. you're great. just everything is fine. >> i'm trying to read joey right now. >> joey's had so many cookies he's like i am after cookies, i don't care about anything. i want to show you, some dogs jumping around, because, you know, another study that is out there, a book that's phenominal, it is called how dogs love us. it is by doctor gregory burns, who is a neuro scientist. and he actually trained dogs, you can watch the tail wag too if you want on there is but actually trained dogs to get into mri machines without any sedation or anything else, did brain scans on the dogs, and it turns out, he also did, very interesting, he found out
7:56 am
that dogs really do emphasize with us, and that they want to be with us, that they remember us, they miss us during the day, able to however they were doing the dogs with accidents and various things, able to pick this up. his biggest take away the biggest misconception, the thing that probably harmed more dogs than any other piece of advice is the wrong vice. you have to be the dominant pack leader. he said that's wrong advice. dogs are socially and emotionally so intelligent and they try so hard to understanded us, that you need to be a great leader and be respectful of them. >> truely man's best friend. >> again the book how dogs love us by doctor gregory burns. let me show you real fast there is dog is adopted thank goodness. >> yeah. >> this is luna, adopted yesterday. four year old german shepherd mix. she is house broken, and i love it when these house broken dogs can get out so they can remember, yes, this is why you're house broken.
