hi there, joe. >> reporter: hi there guys. this is apple crop here at heritages in gloucester county the budd on the trees, were out, in february, and when the weather got warm. so what saves them from trouble? well, they hope not to see any 20's for the rest of the season. over 100 years, maybe fourth generation. >> reporter: john has a factor studying his crops. >> that is green they should be okay f that is brown or black it is done. >> reporter: this south jersey farmer says weather has planted some seed of doubt in the success of this years fruit tree crop. >> it has been a roller coaster here last in. >> reporter: warm february brought out budd on the beach trees. those along with apple trees dot much of the 250 acres ed williams orchard. cbs-3 visited the farm in february, and many of the john 's concerns have come to fruition. >> so he is done there is nothing there, it has killed that one. >> reporter: now race against the clock. >> do you see that one there. >> reporter: okay that still looks okay.

it would be nice to have some warm weather on it. >> reporter: john estimates his peach crop is a week and a half ahead of schedule and with below freezing temperatures still a possibility he is concern. >> once that flower opens when that pistol is spokessed they don't want anything below 27 or 28. once they get to that anything below that we have got damage. >> reporter: john remembers frost late in the winter of the 84 and hail storm a few years back, both wiped out the peaches. >> i don't know. i really don't know, we actually need some more time, when they open up, and when the flowers opened up you can get a better idea. >> reporter: more time. so the apple trees here at heritages are actual any better shape then the peach trees because they have this little insulating layer, however, you cannot stop the progression of the time. some of those peach budd are starting to sprout, if you will, so kate bilo in the eyewitness weather center, kate, they are hopeful out here across south jersey, of

course that we are not going to see 20's anytime soon in that seven day. >> joe, i hate to be bearer of the bad news but we have one night in the seven day forecast that will drop down in the 20's. the question is how long will that period of 20's be and will it be enough to cause damage to the crop. lets break down what we're talking about heading through next couple of days. the concerned time frame is wednesday night, now there are some spots that could drop in the 20's briefly even early wednesday morning but it is wednesday night into thursday morning, our forecast low for city of philadelphia is 22 degrees. some spots may be in the teens that is one day that we're concerned as far as crops. the good news in the forecast is next week, even through the weekend and into next week arctic air will stay to the north. no 20's in the extended future , and it is warmer trend in the long range as well. lets take a look at this temperature outlook put out by climate prediction center for april 2017 and you can see much of the eastern half of the you had is expected to be likely above average,

temperature wise, so all we have to get through is wednesday night and it looks like that is our best shot to see temperatures dropping down in the 20's, and, of course, that could create some danger, for the crops across south jersey and southeastern. we will keep you posted on the trend. we have temperatures heading up toward the 70's by the weekend. so that warm weather, we were talk billing's tell but what day that will be and when rain returns in a few minutes. back to you. berks county authorities are investigating a murder/ suicide in that area chopper three in shoemakers ville earlier this morning. sixty-one year-old garrett more more shot and killed 50 year-old carroll zimmerman. she was found dead behind this home on fourth street. police say moore then took his own life at his home nearby. detectives are calling the burglary of the northeast philadelphia jewelry store a professional job. the thieves broke into kim thanh jewelry on whittaker avenue overnight. they got in through roof of the business next door and then went right for the safe.

heist netted suspect up to a million-dollar worth of jewelry. the owner told "eyewitness news" it is second time that the business has been burglarized this year >> police say it is likely that more than one suspect is involved. mantua township police, want to you take a good look at this surveillance video, authorities say it shows the man illegally entering the residents unlocked koran saturday night, before walking away. police say that there were several reports of car break ins in the township over the weekend and if you recognize this man, give police a call. jury selection began in the trial of the former penn state president graham spanier spanier faces child endangerment and other charges , prosecutors say his response to the jerry sandusky child sex abuse scandal put children at risk. two other former penn state officials have pleaded guilty in the case and they are expected to testify, during spanier's trial, and he maintains his innocence.

an update tonight on the story "eyewitness news" first brought you earlier this month , archaeologists started work on the hundreds of remains found in an olde city construction site. "eyewitness news" reporter david spunt is live tonight with an exclusive behind the scenes look at their work, david. nicole this has been quite an evolving story that work officially began today, behind me is just construction site for an apartment complex but it was a burial ground from 1707, as you mentioned we got an exclusive look from archaeologists over at rutgers camden, bodies, were buried beneath 1707 and 1860. seventy-seven coffins were found in great shape, 150 skeletonness near perfect conditions. hundreds of remains. they have not coulded up the final number. they are fix those up to see exactly what that number is. those bod its and remains were supposed to be removed to the cemetery in southwest philadelphia by 1860 but somebody clearly didn't do their jobs so crews discovered

this. tonight a spoke with the lead archaeologist on the project. she said while this is an exciting project is there still a local of work ahead. >> some bones are more diagnostic then others, you can tell us the age of the individual at death and sometimes if they are male or female but for the most part these unassociated remains will help us get a better understanding how many people we will be dealing with. >> a lot of work ahead. i have to tell you that you wonder who these people are. they were with your i had almost 300 years ago before the you had was even the you had of america. so many questions. these archaeologists and scientists hope to get to the bottom of this to see if they can make identifications through dna to see if there are any living relatives. tonight at 11:00 we will have a full wrap up, showing you more of this behind the scenes work, again, that is exclusive , lot of work for those folks at rutgers camden but it is fulfilling to be able to put these together. reporting live tonight david spunt for cbs-3 "eyewitness news". >> all right david, thank you.

blue route drivers are in for a slow ride over next few weeks. express e-z pass toll lanes are closed for upgrade at mid county interchange near exit number 20 in montgomery county driver can still use the traditional e-z pass lanes, those are lanes that take e-z pass at 5 miles per hour. officials say that the close another is necessary, to upgrade, overhead electronic equipment, those lanes are set to reopened seven a tenth. a new housing project in a popular philadelphia neighborhood has residents concerned about what they stand to lose. apartment complex. battle is brewing over what could happen to the former site of the st. mary of the assumption church in manayunk and its parking spaces. >> the long term residents feel like they are second class citizens compared to what the developers want to develop it and bring tonight. >> reporter: irene talks about a proposed 100 unit multi family apartment complex with 132 parking spaces for tenants >> law says this loss of this parking lot represents 30 percent of the parking in the neighborhood. so it is a big hit. >> reporter: without those spots, the community sent's cross the street could have to shut its doors, the executive director, because some of its only revenue comes from renting out spaces like gymnasium for events. >> we cannot compete in the rental market if we don't have off street parking. it is emotional for me. i have spent my adult working life here. >> reporter: philadelphia city councilman curtis jones junior who oversees this district says he is working with the community to explore options including remoth lot, by van

beach patrollers a dolphin found close to the shore of the north wildwood beach is just back out to sea. >> eyewitness captured this cell even if video and you can see dolphin flapping around in the shallow water on the beach near first street in atlantic avenue. someone spotted the dolphin and called beach patrol who were able to carry it back out to deep waters. city officials toured a northwest recreational center to highlight what facilities like these offer to their communities, and then their dire need for renovation.

to complain about in the pennsylvania couple weeks but today was not one of those days. beautiful day. we're on the cool side. temperatures close to where we need to be. we have had good deal of sun. cloud have rolled in but sunshine, budd on the trees and then also this sign of the spring as rita's handed out free water ice today. here's eyewitness nice at 15th and spruce where people clam toward get their favorite flavor, the 25th year now, quarter century rita has given out free treats and they say more than 1 million people across the country will partake in the give away i can remember a few first days in the spring pennsylvania where it was a little too cold to indulge if that free water ice but today was a perfect day for it, even for our fury friend there great day to get outside, storm scan three shows differences coming our way but right now we have blue skies over center city to finish out the day. cloud have fizzled a little bit. here's a live look from our studios out toward center city philadelphia looking great right now. 6:17. still full daylight and will be for the next hour or so.

sunset in 7:14 tonight. storm scan three does show cloud starting to build in, cloud will be increasing here overnight, you you can see still looking good down the shore but to the west cloud will be found tonight at 48 degrees in, cape may courthouse, light breeze from the northwest. right now across the region 52 . dew .18, very dry air, wind north/northwest at 10 miles an hour. down the shore 55. more sunshine there. very dry air with those dew points in the teens and in the poconos little bit colder, northwest wind at 10 and it is only 37 degrees right now in the mountains. last week was chilly, lets start on wednesday, day after our snow, 31 degrees was the high, thursday stayed in the 30's as well. we have climbed but still average high about 54 well below average friday and saturday. yesterday we got back to 50, and today that warming trend continues back to the mid 50's and we will try to keep bumping it up with one stumbling block to be filth by

wednesday. today likely will end up a degree or two above average. main right on target. tomorrow above average as well we may finally start to add some red here but a very long stretch of below average temperatures, very different to the calendar we saw in february where we had only five days below average. we have flipped the script from march. new that it is spring lets hepp mother nature has warmth in her back pocket for us. tomorrow morning we will start off with cloud. could be a stray sprinkle, mostly dry and that is case through the day as well. not a lot of sun to start the day. in the afternoon cloud thin out more sunshine in time for sunset and then on wednesday it is a full day of sun but it it is cold. we will tap in north lawyer wind bringing down cold air from the north and that will be the coldest day of the week with temperatures feeling no berth than 20's all day long. overnight it is mostly cloudy, 38 degrees, tomorrow morning shower, and then some late day clearing, high of 58, that is a couple degrees above average and notice ups and downs continue, wednesday, 42.
