but berry played sensational. and you mentioned hicks' culture be doubting down the stretch. he was terrific. >> grant: and i thought williams-goss played big, but the ankle down in the last minute, unable to execute. gonzaga led by one, 63-62 with 2:20 left when north carolina went on a 9-2 run, which they have done alternate against arkansas, and then closing the game against kentucky in the regional final. and now they are champions for north carolina, once again. >> bill: redemption. >> jim: that was the theme. >> bill: this summer, correct? >> jim: really, since the day after houston. since the loss to villanova. >> bill: they hung tough, they committed the work, the industrious, got after it. >> grant: and raft, impressive impressive.

they went through ugly in this tournament, but they did what they had to do showing mental toughness down the stretch in these games. and getting the victory, bringing the championship back to chapel hill. >> jim: how about roy getting meeks out early in the game, and in the end of the game he comes up with a magnificent block? >> bill: the devastation of reality... this kid has got great talented. inhibited all day, couldn't really get going. >> grant: gonzaga a great team, fantastic season. really validation this year that they are a real deal, not a mid-major. >> bill: no, no. >> grant: but a fantastic program. mark few coming so close but not enough. >> jim: well, the north carolina tar heels -- you said it well. they close fast in all of these games. they were coming down to the

>> it's "inside march madness" presented by buick on a night for north carolina won the national championship. 71-65 in dramatic fashion over the bulldogs of guns i could, making their first trip to the championship game. the expectations shattering performance. this from kennedy meeks. the block on nigel williams-goss, the finish by justin jackson. and the dreams of gonzaga shattered by the tar heels of north carolina. for the first time this year, gonzaga got outshot. for the first time this year, north carolina won again without rebounding. and now they get their trophy. here is jim nantz. >> jim: all right, ernie. we are here within national champions national champions for the north carolina tar heels.

coaches in our game. gonzaga played fantastic. both teams played extremely hard but i don't think either team played really well. but i told my team with 3:00 left, the first day of practice telling me we were going to be the situation, i would've taken it and what we had to do is play the last 3:00. isaiah hicks made a big basket for us, and we did play the last 3 minutes. >> and this team has been closing since last year they called it the redemption tour. how did this team tonight the last 2:30 finish the game on a 9-2 run? how did that happen? >> again, you said it yourself. they wanted redemption. but i put it up on the locker room on the board. one of the things we had to be tonight is tough enough, and i think this group was tough enough tonight. >> congratulations on your third national championship. i know we spoke yesterday, your heroes were dean smith. won two. now you have three.

how much on a moment like this do you think, coach -- >> i think coach smith, no question, i don't think i should be in the same sentence as him. but i've got three. i've got these guys with me. that's all i care about right now. my guys. >> congratulations, roy. and, hey guys. joel berry is the most outstanding player of the final four. okay, sal. so who was really the best? from around here? johnny matarazzo. 5 foot 3, centre, averaged 57 a night. ronnie derosa, the big d. he put a dollar on the top of the backboard, brought back change. vinnie dibiasio. scored 125 points in one half. on crutches. i was there. vinnie d was awesome, he was unbelievable. he was a ptper, he was the 3-s man, he was... is that even good? high riser, he did... no clue. heroes make every game better. the subway italian hero. perfect for game day. various: (shouting) heigh! ho! ♪ >> inside march madness continues. it's presented by buick. the championship belongs to north carolina. the tar heels cut down the nets as we welcome you back. ernie johnson, clark ellen, charles barkley, and a guy who a year ago was not wearing this same expression. north carolina tar heels -- >> expression changed slightly. i'm happy for the kids of both teams, honestly. >> power through. look at this from joel berry, most outstanding player of the final four and isaiah hicks. >> i would say it again, joel berry didn't play his best, but a timely position. he kept the pace with north carolina needed, and they were able to get the baskets down the stretch. but that was a a great game for gonzaga as well through the played extremely well until the last minute and ten seconds. >> joel berry right away. >> he made four of those.

that was his first one. made 4 of 8 despite struggling from two-point land. and that is jordan mathews playing the three. he didn't get many clean looks with that one up and down. >> berry again playing on thoe bad wheels, but blocks that one down. but josh perkins was the guy in the first half. he had 13. >> he was terrific on the first half as you indicated, ernie, but didn't score it all in the second half as he got balls down and became a bit of a foulfest. >> north carolina claims comes. >> i thought mark few called a tremendous timeout at the 17:15 mark to get his team off of his heels and get back in the ball game. >> and responsible for an 8-01 of their own. >> they stepped up. they made a great run. i've got something to say. >> i'm sure you do. >> i can't see it now, because i need to vent. >> i have a feeling you want to

[laughter] look at the house on right ther there, and tillie to karnowski. >> that was part of the search after the timeout. they got the the zags off of the heel. it actually seemed like it because they took a haymaker from carolina for the first few minutes. and then isaiah hicks as joel berry was, kenny, he was timely in a big way. this is luck. >> we can all agree on that one. >> he got a call. >> it makes it a one-point game. and the nigel williams-goss. >> he was great. >> he made a couple of nice post ups, that victory there. but right on the heels of that, he reminds me of the old school rocket allen level. >> joel berry -- >> that was right after nigel williams-goss had made history.

team as well. >> as i said earlier, the first time all season that gonzaga has been outshot, and the got them in this 1:30 6% to 34%. and the first time this year when the heels were outrebounded and won the game, the double-double presented by capital one mastercard venture. he didn't have a huge double-double against oregon, but he has 13 double-doubles this season, that is kennedy meeks. warner is the official ladder of ncaa basketball championship. i'm telling you, one of the great marketing initiatives of all time when you cut down the nets on championship monday. >> i've been up on those ladders were not on this level, though! >> north carolina 71, gonzaga 65 for the national championship. for gonzaga, a 37-2 season with that second loss really stings moments ago. tracy wolfson with gonzaga head coach mark few. >> coach, you guys overcame foul trouble, nigel williams-goss had a huge game. it ultimately came down to that final minute, what happened down the stretch their? >> do you know what? we got good shots. we had the ball where we wanted. and he is such a warrior, man. he blew his ankle. and was still being able to get the shot. the kid is a flat out winter. he's crushed in there. we never would've got to this point without him, he's the only guy who could call that was delivering down the stretch there. and, god damned, we needed that offensive rebound there and it ended up in a jump

ball. they scored, they took it to three. and that was a back breaker. >> he had so much joy that whole tournament, just getting this far. we saw it on your face throughout. i know you fell short of your ultimate goal, but to take this program, to take gonzaga this far. what does that mean? >> i think it will settle in here, i'm hoping it will settle in and feel better tomorrow. and the days to come. it doesn't feel that great right now for, you know, a couple of reasons. you're right there on the brink of a national championship. you want to give that to your team and your program. you know, at the same time, another thing that just crushes you, tracy, you don't get to coach these guys ever again. that was going to happen whether we won her loss. that is the one that really hurts. i couldn't be prouder, man. they absolutely ignited a lot of

stale people that were kind of bored with the zags, and saying that we haven't been capable of achieving something like this. i think they got the whole world behind them leaving them an i will tell you this. they did it the right way. these are high character dudes, they are good students, and they are hoopers. that's what college basketball is all about. >> congratulations on a great season. >> the tar heels of north carolina over gonzaga by six for a national championship number six. when we come back, greg gumbel, one shining moment as we put the wraps on march madness 2017.
