good morning from studio 57 newsroom here in new york. good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. north carolina and its fans have their redemption. the tar heels beat gonzaga 71-65 to win the ncaa men's basketball championship a year after a crushing last second lost to villanova. >> it's going to fall to north carolina! they are not going to be denied this time. >> for most of the night it was a back and forth battle. gonzaga and carolina trading baskets and fouls. but with 1:40 left jackson delivered the go ahead three-point play and the tar heels pulled away. >> a five-point lead. >> this was williams third national championship. ñ >> one of the things we had to oughing tonight.

the gop's failed health care bill but the freedom caucus hard-liners say they first need to see the details in writing and the supreme court nomination of neal gorsuch is in the hands of the u.s. senate as a bitter partisan battle looms. hena daniels is here in new york with the latest. >> reporter: the white house could soon unveil details avenue plan to repeal and replace obamacare as early as today, according to a member of the house freedom caucus who met with vice president mike pence last night. the development comes as republicans prepare to go nuclear to confirm neal gorsuch as the next supreme court justice. vice president mike pence met privately with members of the house freedom caucus monday night trying to get the group on board with a new plan to overhaul obamacare. >> there's no deal in principle, there's a solid idea. >> reporter: president trump partly blamed the conservative lawmakers for the failure of the original bill last month.

yesterday vice president pence made them a new offer that would allow states to opt-out of some of the obamacare insurance mandates like essential health benefits but preserve some of the more popular features of the affordable care act. >> we're hopeful we'll get the legislative text within the next 24 hours. >> reporter: the president's push for revised health care came as supreme court nominee neal gorsuch learned a critical step in the senate judiciary committee. lawmakers voted along party lines to send his nomination to the full senate for a full vote. >> i cannot support this nomination. >> reporter: the victory was short-lived as senate democrats secured the votes needed to block his confirmation by filibuster. setting up a showdown with republicans. >> i find it ironic and sad that we're going to change the rules over somebody who has lived such a good life. >> reporter: republicans are now threatening to change the rules to require only 51 votes to

confirm gorsuch instead of 60. and a full senate is expected to vote on judge gorsuch later this week. hena daniels here in new york. the justice department is pressing pause on plans to overhaul baltimore's police department. it's asked a federal judge for more time to assess the possible agreement just three days before a hearing on the matter. the reason attorney general jeff sessions is skeptical of federal oversight of local law enforcement. and we are learning more about jared kushner's trip to iraq. president trump's son-in-law and senior adviser was in bag dodd on monday. kushner met with the prime minister of iraq and discussed the fight against isis. and also whether the united states would need troops in iraq afterwards. you do see this in foreign countries. you see it in monarchies authoritarian countries where the brother or son or the uncle of a leader has influence

because of a relationship. kushner was also expected to meet with officials from the united states led military coalition and iraq's minister of defense. ahead on "cbs this morning," gayle king speaks with ivanka trump in her first interview since the named assistant to the president. president trump called russian president vladimir putin to offer condolences to the victims of a bomb blast in st. petersburg. that attack carried out yesterday on a subway trained killed 11 people and injured 40 others. officials said the bombing suspect is a russian citizen. >> reporter: the blast was strong enough to blow-out the subway doors. some passengers pulled others off the train. but some died on-the-spot. amateur video shows the chaos and shock underground as dazed commuters tried to figure out what happened. the explosion took place between stations but the train carried

on through the tunnel to the next stop where the wounded poured out on to the streets. investigators say they found a second bomb at another station which they diffused. it was hidden under a fire extinguisher and say had it gone down the blast would have been even more powerful than the first. president vladimir putin speaking in his home town of st. petersburg today said investigators would pursue all leads. islamic extremist from the north caucuses have attacked before. their most recent subway attack was in 2010 when two suicide bombers killed people in the metro. but since then russia has involved in the messy syrian war and put it in the cross-hairs of isis. a highly regarded texas law man was shot to death at a courthouse moments after arriving for work.

it happened yesterday in bay town near houston. police say the killing of clint greenwood did not appear to be random but a motive was not clear. a massive manhunt is under way for the suspect. severe weather is battering the southern u.s., a storm system that's resulted in at least five deaths is now moving east packing high winds, heavy rains and hail. the damage is extensive with washed out roads and downed power lines. the national weather service says there were 15 reported tornadoes across the south yesterday. and the misery is not over. another round of harsh weather is expected tomorrow. in colombia the death toll is rising after the devastating mudslides. 273 people are dead and hundreds more are missing in mocoa. residents started burying their loved ones yesterday. coming up on the morning news fighting the zika virus.
