i'm anne-marie green. the pentagon says a u.s. missile strike against a syrian air force base knocked the airfield out of commission. president trump ordered last night's strike in retaliation for this week's chemical weapons attack against syrian civilians. now, 59 cruise missiles were ordered. the u.s. says it's the same base where the chemicals action was launched. six people were killed, several wounded. russians were notified in advance. the president said there's no doubt the assad regime is responsible for the chemical attack. president trump addressed the nation last night. >> previous attempts at changing assad's behavior have all failed and failed very dramatically. as a result, the refugee crisis

the country's most recent chemical attack and said it happened when he saw images of i i innocent children who were killed. last night u.s. missile strikes took direct aim at syrian leader ba shash al assad. >> tonight i orted a targeted military strike on the airfield in syria from where the chemical attack was launched. >> reporter: two u.s. navy warships in the mediterranean sea fired a total of 59 tomahawk missiles aimed at this air base in central syria. >> it is in this vital national security interest of the united states to prevent and deter the spread and use of chemical weapons. >> reporter: in an impromptu press conference secretary of state rex tillerson told reporters that president trump made the decision to strike thursday. >> it does demonstrate that president trump is willing to

act when governments and actors cross the line. >> reporter: a u.s. official said vice president mike pence worked out of the white house situation room during the strikes. at least two does members of congress were briefed or notified about the assault. >> tonight he acted under his authority as commander in chief. >> reporter: house, house minority leader nancy pelosi and other democrats said the president should have consulted with congress. the pentagon says any additional strikes will depend on whether syria conducts any more chemical attacks. we're live in west palm beach, florida. anne-marie, back to you. >> weijian, thank you very much. well, jonathan vigliotti is in london with the reaction. the british based observatory said the u.s. destroyed over a dozen hangars, a fuel and

ammunition depot and an air defense system. a fire was seen raging there hours after the attack, the six people were killed, several more wounded. according to the pent gone the missiles were launched from ships in mediterranean. they were specifically targetinging a base storing weapons and chemicals. more than 8 0e were killed. the pentagon said today's strike was intended to deter the regime from using their chemical supply. this retaliation marks the first time the u.s. has launched a direct attack on syria and it's likely going to cause conflict between u.s. and russia who president trump hoped to improve relations with. u.s. officials say russians and allies were warned ahead of the strike to prevent any casualties and it appears rush did tip off their ally, the assad regime.

say it was no ordinary dash cam ride. a chase began after an ambulance was stolen. the 18-year-old man behind the wheel faces an array of charges. dozens of people in indiana are forced to evacuation because of a natural gas fire. it erupted last night in a town northeast of indianapolis when a car struck a pipeline. power was knocked out in the area. the four people who were in the car are hospitalized with burns. and he was known as the mer chant of venom, but don rickles' insults always left his victims laughing. rickles died yesterday in los angeles. jim axelrod looks back at his comedic career. >> reporter: don rickles never put a knife in anyone's back. he hit them right between the eyes. an equal opportunity offender, no one was exempt from his ridicule, no race, no religion.
