actively suppressing science. >> the march inspired speakers like bill nye and protesters from coast to coast. if you stepped out today it was gloomy and rainy. we're following april showers for you as storm scan3 is lighting up. lots of green. good evening, everyone, i'm natasha brown. thank you so much for joining us. folks rallied all over the country today to support the scientific process and the folks who study hard to make breakthroughs happen. crowds in chicago were thick, 45,000 people turned out to preserve the sciences and in new york city participants came out with their umbrellas to protest reduced funding for research. also protesters even rallied across the pond marching through the streets of london calling for lawmakers to do more to require schools to teach science based courses. now here at home crowds gathered to also protest president trump's recent cuts to the environmental pro section agency. "eyewitness news" reporter cleve bryan is live at our sat center. he's got the latest on our

local march. >> reporter: i can remember when i was a kid. my dad took me to new york city to the statue of liberty for the 20th celebration of earth day and it was a huge event. i remember that vividly. a lot of people will remember earth day 2017 as the march for science. carrying a giant banner science not silence, thousands march through philadelphia saturday to raise their voices in support of science. >> scientists have been too passive. the pro science team is in large part in reaction to president trump who today as questioned climate change eased environmental regulation and called for steep budget cuts to the environmental protection agency. >> i'm very angry at what's happening in the news with the trump administration just basically undoing all of the important institutions. >> reporter: after marching hundreds listened to speeches about science and politics at penn's landing great plaza. >> i think it's important that we all are vocal and that

we're vocal about the facts. >> reporter: bryn mawr college professor says it's a exciting to see so many people take up the causes of the science and the environment as they become more politically active. >> i think there's a lot of pushback coming from -- we want economic growth but economic growth comes with the health of a people. >> reporter: brianne jeffrey had molecules for jewelry and a sign science makes america great again a message she says isn't a jab at trump supporters but an invitation. >> reach out to people who might not feel welcomed by the scientific community. >> reporter: among the proposals for how scientists can be more vocal running for office. i'm cleve bryan in the sat center, "eyewitness news." >> cleve, thank you very much. also philadelphia celebrate the earth day at the national constitution center today. visitors learned about green pioneers like president teddy roosevelt and first lady lady bird johnson and how to be responsible citizens who care for the planet. the center also helped

visitors create coot tea catchers with helpful tips on going green. participants learned ways to conserve water and other environmental issues. cbs news anchor walter cronkite hosted a special broadcast in honor of the very first earth day. cronkite reported on the nationwide protests that took place that day and he said the people that were participating were predominantly young and anti-nixon. he said the message of earth day was clear act or die. and now a well known family in camden county, new jersey, planted trees in honor of this special day. the folk family who own the cherry hill triplex car dealership planted 50 trees at the folk baseball field in cherry hill. it was to celebrate the earth but in celebration of the dealership's 50th anniversary as well t charles folk says it was a great way for his family to give back to the community. >> now, just figure five years from now how beautiful these

trees will look around this field and these kids will be here playing and some kid will put one right over the fence. that will be a nice thrill, wouldn't it? >> the family opened their first dealership in cherry hill back in 1967. it has been a damp and pretty dreary day out today. if you were out and about, then i'm certain you needed a sweatshirt maybe a jacket. meteorologist lauren casey is following the showers across the region tonight. looks like we got a lot of activity out there lauren. >> yeah, absolutely. it is light in intensity but it is widespread in nature but not the best looking beach day in are a hob beth. you see the planks there, they are certainly damp overcast sky conditions and that will be the trend as we head into the evening hours. temperatures are cool to boot. 54 degrees right now in philadelphia. 55 in allentown, down to the 40's in mount pocono at 46 degrees. and caught a little bit of break in center city philadelphia from that light rain over the last hour but you can see this area of

precipitation it is returning moving mainly from west to east so we're going to see this batch of light shower activity continue to work across the area spreading back into south jersey as we head into the next couple of hours. so, dealing with areas of light rain this evening, cool conditions with temperatures in the low 50's. overnight the rain turns off, some partial clearing, chilly, dropping down to 45 degrees. we'll dry out a bit as we head into our sunday but looks like monday and tuesday are going to be on the soggy side as we contend with some tropical moisture and we'll talk more about that in your full forecast coming up in just a couple of minutes. >> all right, thank you so much lauren. we'll see you again soon. authorities in kent county delaware they need your help identifying a suspect in an early morning burglary. dover police say that just after 4:00 a.m. the man seen in these photos broke into the dot discount store in the 1200 block of state street. the suspect stole 32 cartons of cigarettes and lottery tickets. anyone with information is asked to contact police right away. and family and friends of

robert godwin sr. said their final goodbyes at a funeral service in euclid ohio. godwin was shot and killed on easter sunday while walking in cleveland and millions of people witnesses him die. steve stephens the alleged shooter posted a video of the shooting on facebook live. following a manhunt on tuesday stephens killed himself after being surrounded by police in eerie, pennsylvania. now we are just days away from the nfl draft arriving in philadelphia. tens of thousands of fans are expected to attend the free event and as you can expect security will certainly be tight. a secure perimeter will be surrounding the stage area in front of the art museum steps on the ben franklin parkway. fans will have to enter through a secured gate. no large bags are allowed and all bags will be checked. no outside food beverages firearms or aerosol sprays will be allowed past the gate area. stay with us. still ahead on "eyewitness news" tonight it's the first official weekend for the museum of the american revolution and today the place

several cars. authorities say the 400-acre blaze in lehigh acres started friday afternoon. another fire in collier county destroyed two trailers and another in polk county forced the evacuation of 800 homes. also tonight on monday expedition 51 commander peggy whitson will set the u.s. record for most cumulative days in space. whitson has accumulated 377 days in space. the most for any u.s. woman. the astronaut has also performed six space walks totaling 39 hours, 46 minutes to be exact. and have you had a chance to get to the museum of the american revolution just yet? it's the first weekend the newest museum in olde city philadelphia has been opened to the public. today anita oh learned a lot more about the philadelphia link to the to the war that made america free. >> ♪ >> reporter: in olde city, a new addition, the museum of the american revolution. >> history in general interests me because it's nice to know about everything that

happened before and even empires and things like that, it's just fascinating to me. >> reporter: for the museum's first weekend of business, a line of people had already formed before the doors opened at 9:30 saturday morning. >> both my wife and i are history buffs and we heard that the museum had some very interesting exhibits. >> reporter: some made the trip from out of state just to explore the 118,000 square foot museum. >> i teach fifth grade and i teach about the american revolution and the constitution to all my students so i, too,. like really interested in seeing this. >> reporter: though the museum is full of history it's incorporating the technology of today. visitors can use the #how revolutionary for the chance to see their social media posts appear on this hashtag mosaic. we found a soldier in full costume. antoine watts who participates in war reenactment. >> there's things in school you do not learn about history. american history. you hear about george washington you hear about john

adams thomas jefferson but you don't hear about richard allen, absalom jones, paul cuffy. >> reporter: the hope is that through this museum even 242 years later, the history of this nation will be celebrated and remembered. >> we love our country. we want to understand much more. >> reporter: in olde city t-anita oh, cbs3 "eyewitness news." >> well, there's also a party on that nor the legacy of superstar prince. it was in full swing in minnesota one year after his death. fans are pouring into the music icon's hometown from near and far to pay tribute. they say they will never -- there will never be another prince. >> played every instrument like known to concept. >> he could play to a crowd any generation, energy, that's what i think is his biggest attribute was energy. >> well, thousands of fans will also gather outside of one of his favorite venues for

an overnight block party. there is an ongoing criminal investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death of the 57-year-old singer. and lauren's joining us now along with this gloomy weather. we're not excited about that but you've got some exciting news, right. >> yeah, what is it? we'll show you what this vehicle can do and now let's get to that soggy forecast. that is the good news. >> make that happen. >> girl, we're going to go cruising around town after this show here. so, we're going need the windshield wipers in that mobile weather watcher because the rain is coming down, light in innocence at -- int because of that northerly wind flow high temperatures today did struggle with that light rain and the overcast skies. 58 degrees was our high to kick off the week. normally we should be at 66 degrees and temperatures right now are cool. 52 degrees in wilmington. need that jacket if you're heading out in allentown at 55 degrees and we're at 46 in mount pocono. cool temperatures really across the region. generally in the 50's so running altogether below average because of that northerly wind flow and you can see those winds pulling out of the north ushering in that cooler air.

wind speeds up around circumstance seven, 10, 12 miles per hour so a little bit of a light damp breeze. as we head into the overnight period though the rain showers will that come to an end. we'll still see some light rain over the next several hours and really by midnight wrapping this up. chilly down to 45 degrees. for our day tomorrow, the better day of the weekend. a mix of sun and clouds, milder conditions with temperatures running closer to average up to 65 degrees. but storm scan3 packed in with the wet weather we did get a little bit of a break from that light rain across portions of south jersey along the i-95 corridor briefly. now you see this other area of precipitation moving in from west to east. very light in intensity just seeing some dark greens in there so no heavy rain to contend with but we'll still have you reaching for the umbrella. now chester county, delaware county really encompassed with all this light rain coming down across much of the area up into pottstown radnor seeing light rain coming down and south jersey some of our shore points. after getting that break the rain is returning encompassing cape cape may county and that will

head into sea isle city. we have an area of low pressure off to our south. the stronger thunderstorm activity is closer to that center of the low down as we look towards the virginias. again we'll just see light showers working through over the next several hours but more inclement weather is in store as we head into monday and tuesday but for overnight tonight, shower activity wrapping up as we head into our sunday. we will get some times of sunshine in store especially across northern parts of the area but then a cloud deck does quickly return as we head into that sunday evening and then as we head into monday, we'll see some shower activity returning from south to north. other models painting in this area of precipitation moving more northbound earlier in the day on monday and then on monday night we will see widespread shower activity and through the day on tuesday. periods of rain and some could be heavy at times along with some embedded thunderstorms so monday and tuesday not looking so great. high temperatures only in the 50's. rain and thunder on tuesday, again some of that rain could be heavy at times and then a big rebound going from 50's to

away. eagles with the 14th pick in the first round. they have many needs and one of them is a running back. several mock drafts have the birds taking stanford running back christian mccaffery. only missing one game for the cardinals. eagles tight end zach ertz says he reminds him of another eagles running back. >> wherever he's going get drafted in the nfl i think he's going to be successful just because he's so versatile and his overall game whether it be in the return game and on offense you can move him all over the place. we kind of joke around back in san diego that he's kind of darren sproles 2.0, just a little taller but he's so explosive he's a great player an person as well. >> union hosting montreal. thirty-ninth minute rowland. auberg with the penalty kick. eighty-seventh minute andre blake makes the save but anthony jackson hammel knocks

mentality. but thanks to his childhood friend he's going to be going to the prom soon. tanae dixon met unique before the accident. they were fast friends and that bond has only gotten stronger. >> for him going to prom with me it's like a gift. i'm so excited. i can't wait. i think he's thinking like that's my girl . >> [laughter] that's my girl. i love her. >> well, she says unique is her motivation to keep going when things seem to get really hard. she says that she plans to keep up their friendship as she heads off to college. very nice. >>
