>> ♪ >> breaking now at noon. propane leaks from a rail car and now evacuations are under way in gloucester county. at least two people have been hurt. we're told several thousands gallons of propane has leaked from the rail car. good afternoon i'm rahel solomon. >> i'm jim donovan. hazmat crews are on scene. joe holden joins us live with the breaking details. good afternoon joe. >> reporter: jim, rahel the scene is significant. things came to an abbunt halt 10 o'clock this morning, road closures all over the place. this was closed until just about 10 minutes ago.

several hundred people have been evacuated after officials say a leak was discovered in the head of a rail tanker here in logan township gloucester county. i want to take you right up and close here as our photographer got relatively close on the scene. he was a short distance away and able to capture this video. now, this complex is a mix of a variety of commercial and light industrial buildings. as you have reported, two people were taken to the hospital for treatment of nonlife-threatening injuries. now, the call for the initial 911 reports went out of three os spree court logan, new jersey. the scope of evacuation takes in a half mile radius including numerous businesses in the area and a day care. we watched as dozens of children and adults walked down the street here away from that leaking rail tanker. now, we're told a valve malfunctioned. that is the cause for the propane leak. there are significant road closures still right now

including exit 10 of interstate 295. we did speak to a business owner about all of this. have a listen. >> one of the rail lines they say has propane leak or something like that. >> reporter: where did you guys work. >> i have a restaurant over here cafe seven. they evacuated us. it's crazy. >> anything like this happen before? >> not around here. >> no. >> reporter: so, the evacuations still continue at this point people not being allowed into their businesses for the children and for the adults most were able to be load onto school buses and taken away from here. at least again, out of that half mile perimeter that has been evacuated. we are expecting an update from gloucester county emergency management officials. i spoke to their public information officer within the last half hour. they were en route to the scene. as soon as they arrive here we expect to learn much more. for now that is the latest on this breaking news live in logan township gloucester county, joe holden cbs3 "eyewitness news." >> all right, joe, thank you.

>> well its a miserable thursday if you were out this morning you know it poured at times and traffic was a mess. >> let's see how it is right now. meteorologist katie -- kate fehlinger with the latest. >> we're seeing the worst of the really widespread rain lifts north at this point rahel but yeah, it's been a very dreary day so far and i can't honestly remember just off the top of my head anyway when the last time was that we could wake up to a beautiful sunrise. feels like it's been forever, right? but we are going to catch some breaks along the way into even the midday. take a look at storm scan. the bulk of the really heavy rain and even the light rain, heck, that's all lifted to the north. we are not out of the woods though. don't let this deceive you. we're still going to see eventual additional showers if not even a few thunderstorms. we'll talk much more about this through the second half of the show here in my full forecast but we sit in a severe weather threat today. grant its lowest on the totem pole of severe weather

two crew members were killed. >> new arrests in the uk as the country continues to mourn the victims of monday's terror attack in manchester. [bell tolls] crowds gathered across great britain to observe a moment of silence in honor of the lives lost. queen elizabeth was among many offering her support. the queen made a surprise visit to manchester's children's hospital. she met with victims families and medical staff. meantime manchester police are working around the clock to find more possible terror accomplices. so far eight suspects are in custody. police say more raids are imminent. >> i want to reassure people that the arrests that we have made are significant. and initial searches of premises have revealed items that we believe are very important to the investigation. these searches will that take several days to complete. >> now, manchester police say they will stop sharing information about the bombing

investigation with u.s. authorities over concerns regarding intelligence leaks to the media. >> one set of voters head to the polls today to vote in a special election where the republican candidate has been charged with misdemeanor assault. billionaire businessman greg gianforte is accused of body slamming a reporter and as our correspondent tells us audio was caught on tape. >> reporter: greg gianforte tried to dodge a reporter's question about healthcare when the confrontation became more than just verbal. >> talk to you about that later. >> there's not going to be time. >> speak to shane, please. >> sick and tired of you guys. the last time you came in here you did the same thing. get the hell out of here. get the hell out of here. >> reporter: political reporter ben jacobs says gianforte assaulted him. he took this photo from inside an ambulance wednesday. >> he's on top of me first second my glasses are broken.

strangest -- the strangest moment in my entire life reporting. >> reporter: fox news correspondent alicia acuna was in the room and backed up jacobs' account writing gianforte grabbed jacob by the neck with both hands and slammed him into the ground. gianforte's campaign issued a statement saying jacobs aggressively shoved a recorder in greg's face and said jacobs grabbed greg's wrists and spun away from greg pushing them both to the ground. gianforte's challenger democrat rob quist declined to comment. >> i think that's a matter for law enforcement. >> reporter: we met gianforte last month in bozeman. >> people have lost faith in washington. we've got federal agencies that are way outside their sand bok. we need to reign them back in. >> reporter: gianforte faces a misdemeanor assault charge and has to appear in court in june. meg oliver cbs news new york. >> well, a document that reached the top levels of the fbi including former director james comey appears to have

been based on faulty intelligence possibly planted by the russians. the document reportedly showed that then attorney general loretta lynch colluded with the clinton campaign to squash the e-mail server investigation. the fbi later deemed the document "unreliable" but not before comey used it as a justification to publically discuss the investigation. sources say comey feared that if lynch announced no charges and then the document leaked, the legitimacy of the case would be questioned. >> meanwhile president trump addressed world leaders today at the nato summit in brussells and as correspondent weijia jiang shows us differences remain. >> reporter:. >> all over the world they're talking about it and we have a lot to discuss including terrorism. >> reporter: nato has agreed to join the obama era coalition to fight isis but

stopped short of raging direct war against the extremist group following his face-to-face meeting with the president the head of the european council said disagreement lingers over russia. >> i am not 100 percent sure that we can say today we mr. president and myself that we have a common position and opinion about russia. >> reporter: the president who once called nato obsolete also wants additional forces to join the roughly 8400 u.s. troops in afghanistan. president trump and uk prime minister theresa may had a cordial visit here at the white house earlier this year but their next meeting could be contentious. british officials are upset with the u.s. over the publication of leaked evidence, photographs from the scene of the manchester terror attack. >> i will make clear to president trump that intelligence that he shares between our law enforcement agencies must remain secure. >> reporter: protesters

demonstrated against president trump's visit outside the u.s. embassy in brussels. later today, the president travels to italy where he'll attend the g-7 summit in sicily. weijia jiang for cbs3 "eyewitness news." >> in other news this noon jury deliberations continue in the murder trial of a camden county father accused of killing his three-year-old son back in 2015. this morning jurors finished listening to taped evidence that was presented earlier in the trial. it revolved around a conversation that david creato jr. had with the mother of his son brendan. the conversation was secretly recorded by police. we'll continue to monitor today's deliberations and have the latest on "eyewitness news" starting at 5:00. >> police identified the suspect accused of barricading himself inside a delaware county cvs during a robbery last night. police say they took 46-year-old quasi hudson into custody after a nearly two hour standoff. hudson allegedly forced workers into a bathroom at a

>> new report finds the size of your car can play a major role. cbs news correspondent danielle nottingham explains itch this crash test shows what happened when a large and small car collide head on. the mercedes continues to move forward while the smart car is thrown backwards. similar results can be seen on the road. last year in south carolina an suv hit a compact car head on. the suv driver survived. the driver of the smaller car was killed. >> it's expected that you will have more deaths in the smaller cars. >> reporter: chuck farmer is vice president of research at the insurance institute of highway safety. the group's new report finds overall there are 30 drivers killed each year for every million vehicles on the road. but the numbers vary depending on the size of the vehicle. cars see a higher rate than trucks, suv's and minivans. when look at specific categories, four door mini cars have the highest death rate while large luxury suv's have the lowest.

>> welcome back. four decades ago when theaters not so far away fans got their first taste of the force. >> ♪ >> the iconic "star wars" movie opened in just a few dozen u.s. theaters back on this day in 1977. director george lucas' original sci-fi space tale now known as a new hope first told the story of luke leia and of course darth vader. the newest edition to the "star wars" saga the last jedi will open in that theaters on december 15th. it looks so tame compared to the stuff you see nowadays. >> no kidding. >> talk about it.

>> so excited about that. >> it was very innovative at the time. >> this weekend would be good kind of for movies. >> saturday is your best option to get outside if you're looking to picnic or go to the beach or anything like that because right now it looks like the driest. it does start to go a little bit downhill. i don't think we're talking washout status necessarily but i want to jump off of that for a second because i want show you a fun picture to start things off and, you know, if you've been a loyal watcher of the show that we have a mobile weather watcher. quickly i'm going to show you our shore shot as we take you out to ocean city. what a dreary beginning to afternoon. i want to brighten this up. ocean city in cape may county very dark indeed. there is still some rain around most of the heavier rain since has pulled away but let's go to that picture i just promised. here it is. the second grade class and despite the fact there's no sunshine they had their cbs3 shades on just so sweet and off in the distance not only our meteorologist matt

peterson but mobile weather watcher he took it out to go give the kids a tour of the mobile weather watcher and looks like they had an absolute blast. meanwhile we of course have been tracking this system and the heaviest of the rain most widespread of the coverage has begun to lift far off to the north but notice what's ago. you see how the sky is trying to clear out a little bit. that could spell a problem later on today. why? because if you get some more sunshine you could end up with more instability is the word i'm going for here so we eventually end up potentially with heavier thunderstorms toward evening and this storm system is a large one and it needs more time to clear out. switching gears and talking about hurricane season. can you believe that's right around the corner? noaa issued their official outlook. i'll step out of the way so you can see it for the atlantic basin for the year 2017 calling for 11 to 17 separate named storms. we actually already have one in the books arlene, remember that rare april system, five to nine which will likely become hurricanes and two to four major hurricanes in other words a category three or

higher. now, back to the rainfall that we're talk about. let's take a look at how things pan out for the next couple hours. there will be very, very spotty showers or a thunderstorm firing up in the next few hours. so the phillies will and probably play so it's not the prettiest day to be down at the ballpark. later on this evening look at this, these could be really heavy duty thunderstorms with downpours frequent lightning and possibly some other severe weather elements. i don't think a tornado or hail is necessarily going to happen but it's not out of the question its a low risk. looking forward, though, things do start to clear out into tomorrow and while i can't rule out a residual sprinkle generally speaking it's looks like a nicer day. kutztown middle school dreary beginning the day at 55 degrees. our seven-day forecast does have some bright spots to it like we promised. tomorrow is looking like a nice transition day with other than a have ink kellyanne breeze it's much nicer with sunshine. saturday is a gem. sunday the showers return in passing fashion through the second half of the day and then at least it's warmer for monday but it's pretty good shot were see showers or a
