now at 5:00 a dangerous gas leak forced evacuations at road closures in a south jersey community, and we are live with the details about what caused the hazard. good evening everyone i'm ukee washington. i'm jessica dean. gas leak in south jersey forced evacuations and shut down exit of the major highway >> railcar sprung a leak this morning near osprey court in logan township gloucester county. this is a look at the closures exit number 10 of i295 north and southbound to centre square road remains shut down at this hour. centre square road is also closed down between the 25 and pedricktown road. "eyewitness news" reporter joe holden joins us from the scene where he has been tracking this story all day, joe, good evening. >> i just check with

gloucester county emergency management and they have confirmed to cbs-3 that officials have been able to contain that leaking, tanker truck, six and a half hours into all of this. i'm told they put a secondary valve on top to make sure it stays secure, right now, officials are sweeping through the many buildings that make up, this industrial complex, and to make sure that the air is safe. pro powe lean a highly flammable gas used out of a rail tanker. cbs-3 captured the emergency incident before being pushed back. >> it is in liquid form but valve failed and once that hits temperature it is a vapor vapor is explosive. >> reporter: valve ruptured at 9:53 thursday morning touching off evacuations of several hundred people, who work in the pure land industrial park in logan township. if inhaled gas is said to cause irritation. those within a half mile radius like kathy tinder were told to get out.

>> i have a restaurant over here and they evacuated us. it is crazy. >> anything like this ever happened before. >> not around here. >> reporter: dozens of children at a nearby day care were seen walking along a roadside, bus took them to a nearby hotel, in the first few minutes of the evacuation, fire, police went door to door >> advising the businesses, around, that they had to leave , and it was just matter of going from one business to the next and letting them know they need to leave and direction they needed to take. >> reporter: police say two people were injured in the gas release, one was taken to the hospital with minor injuries, other is okay. hours into the emergency power was cut off to local businesses, and emergency officials described it as a precautionary move. >> there is still an active leaking on we have hazmat teams going in there right now trying to assess the valve situation. >> reporter: once again, just learning within the last half an hour that leak has been stopped. right now air quality tests underway so that the evacuation order can then be

"eyewitness news" reporter anita oh is live near the scene tonight, anita? >> reporter: ukee and jessica we are being kept at a distance but we are getting a better sense of the damage here, several cars parked nearby, they are covered in mud, one of them back windshield is even shattered out and now authorities are working to investigate exactly what brought this helicopter down. >> i heard this, bump, bump,

bump and then i looked up in the sky. >> reporter: mary williams saw the helicopter nose dive. >> i heard it explode, and then i saw the black smoke. it was terrible. i'm still shaking. >> reporter: just before noon time thursday medical helicopter crashed on north quigley boulevard near wilmington airport killing the only person on board, the pilot. >> i'm still shaking about it. i'm sad. >> there was a life there that is gone. >> reporter: "eyewitness news" has confirmed that the 37 year-old pilot from new jersey was in the middle of the training flight when it crashed. >> the pilot, employed by metro aviation had flown from the atlantic city airport and was conducting training in the area of the new castle county airport. >> reporter: chopper operate by metro aviation and provides services for pennstar which is used to transport patients in the university of pennsylvania health system, although none were on board. delaware state police say impact of the crash sparked a fire which spread to the empty building nearby but only caused minor damage.

>> nobody on the ground was injured. >> reporter: right now live look at the investigation on the scene, delaware state police and faa are handling the investigation, while members of the national transportation safety board are in route and they are expected to arrive here shortly. at this time they are not identifying, that victim. coming up at 6:30 more witnesses described what they saw, the scary moments, this helicopter came crashing down just yard away from them. live from new castle county, i'm anita oh for cbs-3 "eyewitness news". >> thank you. we are learning more about why a private jet crash near new jersey teterboro airport may 15th. the preliminary report just released the pilot turned that jet too late to land safely. the national transportation safety board reports say that radar data showed the pilot should have started that turn about 4 miles out, and instead he turned just about 1 mile out. eyewitnesses say they saw the plane bank right and then crash into an industrial park,

two crew members were killed. there are new developments in the hit and run crash in lancaster last week involving a school bus, police have arrested 46 year-old james irving the third whom they say drove a car involved in the crash. police say he tried to pass two tractor trailers but hit one of their escort vehicles which was then sideswiped the bus. more than a dozen people were injured, one first grader was ejected from the bus and seriously injured. well, after a wet, dreary day we are getting a break from the rain right now but we are not in the clear just yet. more rain and maybe even some thunderstorms are on the way. meteorologist lauren casey's tracking latest round of wet weather and joins us now to tell us when it will come back , lauren. >> it is in route. we have had a wet start the two day and more thunderstorm activity is on the way and this activity will be stronger then what we saw come through earlier in the day today. we can see that reflected on storm scan 3a barrage itself developing in the the d.c. area and many cells severe and they are track off to the

north east and will be rolling in the delaware valley in the next several hours and we have some cells breaking out really within the last hour or so, around the delaware valley. we have thunderstorm, over parts of the salem, gloucester counties. these cells will be quick to fire up and quick to strengthen as well. so keep an eye to the sky and stay weather aware over dover. we are dealing with the thunderstorm right now. heading in the next several hours it will be a stormy go, thunderstorms, widespread in nature, some could be on the stronger side. temperatures will warm as a warm front is building through the area and then overnight storms coming to than a end, a few showers late tonight but by midnight or 1:00 a.m. we will see storm activity kind of filter back or taper off but over next couple of hours you want to be prepared for possibility and likelihood of heavy downpours, strong, gusty wind, frequent lightening embedded with these cells, hail threat, tornado threats there but very low and we will talk about the storm threat, track these cells and talk about if we can dry things out , finally, for for our

wildwood officials hope to ban smoking on the boardwalk but not until next year. january 1st 2018 you will not be able to light up on the boardwalk. officials are asking that people voluntarily refrain from smoking this summer, and the mayor says that the boardwalk is susceptible to fires, and there are concerns about the effects of secondhand smoke. speaking of wildwood the cbs-3 is heading there. our summer fest kicks off tomorrow for unofficial start of the summer memorial day weekend. we will take you to a different location every friday to he show off the amazing ways that the delaware valley and tri-state area celebrate summer, tomorrow we will start off with a behind the scenes look at morey's pier during "eyewitness news" this morning and i'll head down the shore with the team to be live on the boardwalk right by the wildwood convention center for five, six, 10, 11:00 p.m. newscast, summer if he here we come, it

is on. >> all right. >> meteorologist lauren casey 's here. everybody wants good weather for long weekend. >> yes, we will improve weather dramatically for summer fest tomorrow, evening will be breezy, bringing a hat but clear conditions, it will be a rough go over next couple hours as we contend with the threat of the stronger storms already developing across parts of the delaware valley, but conditions people trying to get out there on the beach right now but they might be chase add way by cells rapidly , developing. we already had heavy rain moving through this morning, really impacted morning commute, check out these rainfall totals in the neighborhood network on the order of half inch, quarter inch, close to an inch and we have more rain on the way, and storm scan three you can see just over last couple of hours really within the last hour these cells firing up very rapidly. you can turn over to some breaks of sunshine to thunderstorm very quickly over next several hours and we are seeing showers, storms activity right now encompassed over salem, gloucester, camden county and get ready center city fill at rain is coming

down here as well, maryland rate in intensity. you can see this rain will strengthen in intensity very quickly within these cells, we are dealing with the thunderstorm cell right now over parts of the delaware just north of the dover, pleasantton acres and dutch neck crossroad and woodland beach seeing heavy rain and frequent lightening as well. check out these cells off to the south and west, there are multiple cells and number of these do have severe thunderstorm warnings and they will track to the north and east. we need to keep an eye to the sky. future weather will show us heading in the seven or 8:00 o'clock hour these cells moving in across the area check this out a picture of 8:00 this evening as we head in the 9:00 o'clock hour we are seeing scatter, stronger thunderstorm rolling from southwest to northeast across the area as we head in the 10, 11:00 o'clock hour. those storms moving out and then things will start to wind down as we head past midnight. few lingering showers after midnight but we will see that stronger weather threat come to an end before we start to

clear things out for our friday and improved conditions , just in time for summer fest. severe threat we have one across the year today. does include center city philadelphia, south jersey, shore, delaware we are in the marginal risk of severe wet they are evening and early part of tonight as we could see isolated thunderstorms and they could go severe. temperatures right now are on the rise because we have a warm front coming through, that is creating that lift in the atmosphere, also giving that warmer temperature and moisture as well, in order to support some of these cells. temperatures warmed up in the 70's across south jersey, we are at 75 degrees in cape may, but conversely 61 degrees ahead of the boundary at barnegat light house. for your memorial day weekend we will start to quiet things down, saturday looks like a good day. mostly sunny, how about that. 78 degrees to kick off the weekend. sunday increasing cloudy with the showers or thunderstorm as we head in the holiday itself warming up to 83 degrees. we will watch out for chance of showers, storms mainly in the afternoon.

tomorrow not looking too bad mixture of cloud, sunshine's we will see mostly clear conditions taking over by evening hours, a bit breeze which a high temperature of 77 but weekend, three day weekend not looking terrible, but, you know, saturday is the day to get outside for sure. also, next up we have atlantic hurricane season that starts in just a week and could be a busy one, forecasters at climate prediction center are predicting 11 to 17 named storms this season. of those storms five to nine are expected to be hurricanes while two of those, two to four will be major hurricanes that is category three, four or five. forecasters say at above average prediction is due to several factors including a weak or potentially non- existent el nino, above average sea surface temperatures or water temperatures in the atlantic and average or weaker than average vertical wind sheer. we need vertical wind sheer to tear tops off those thunderstorms that form in the tropical system.

"eyewitness news" reporter cleve bryan is live in camden with more on where things stand right now. cleve? >> reporter: after more than two days of deliberations the jury unable to reach averred here. and because of the holiday weekends, with memorial day, they won't come back until next tuesday. for little bran dan's family, another holiday without closure. >> the crime that brought police to tears. three year old brendan creato found dead near the cooper river in 2015, his father is charged with murder. here are the fact. dj was the only person to have access to his son the morning he was found dead. brendan was in a muddy creek more than half mile from home wearing clean socks, suggesting he was placed and not wandered there. wooded area dj admitted he visited often, and felt a

questions. live in camden, cleve bryan, cbs-3, "eyewitness news." >> thank you, cleve. this is the fiery ends to bizarre chase in texas. police on pursuit of rv when it caught fire on interstate 30 between dallas and fort worth. police say it started when husband and wife got into a fight. they ended up in their rv with their children, the wife texted 911 to say she had been shot. he jumped out of the rv as it was moving, she is now hospitalized. the husband took his own life. officers were able to get the children out of the rv. >> a new report finds the size after vehicle matter when it comes to surviving a car crash. now, this crash shows what happens when a large and small car collide head-on. the insurance institute for highway safety says cars have higher death rate, four door mini cars have the highest death rate, while large luxury suv's have the lowest. >> you are in a small car most of the cars around you are bigger.

all. >> award wine, not much different than california. we understand california has a lot of history into the wine making, and to the industry, but we can produce wine, white, mostly, by even some great reds. >> gino, nature of of italy, decided to take over this location more than a decade ago, in a attempt to put p a on the wine map. succeeded by producing award winner. how does it happen? begins with a strong vine, and plenty of patients. >> takes approximately one year to prepare the soil, order the vines, then when you plant the vines, now this one, three years before it can harvest, take the next approximately five years for the vine to start producing great grapes. so you are talking about nine years. >> that's just for white wine. add an additional two, three years for red wine here in fa. vineyard manager davi says the grapes here require a little more care. >> need little bit more

down, which killed sole person on board. >> i seen the helicopter nosedive, basically a hundred yards from me. >> just before noon thursday, saw medical helicopter crash before him. >> sounded like it was out of gas. sounded like the propellers weren't moving, like he was struggling, and kind of looked up, i seen, like, going straight down. then at the last minute, then it build up of course. >> happened on north quickly boulevard near the airport in new castle county, instantly killed the 37 year old pilot, from franklinville, new jersey. authorities say he was in the middle of a training flight from atlantic city when the chopper crashed. >> i thought that chopper hit this building. that's how bad that noise was. >> "eyewitness news" has confirmed the chopper, operated by metro aviation, is used by pen star, which transports patient if and the university of pennsylvania hit system. >> there were no other injuries as a result of the crash. minor structural damage to a

shed was sustained by flying debris and flames. >> and witnesses believe the fact no one else got hurt is no accident. >> pilot must have made sure he missed all of the buildings, where it landed. unbelievable. >> and the national transportation safety board, the fa a and delaware state police are still investigating the cause of this accident. at this time they're not releasing the name of that victim. reporting live in new castle county, i'm anita oh, "eyewitness news." >> thank you, two philadelphia police officer are injured in a serious crash on roosevelt boulevard in mayfair this afternoon. investigators say, a drunk driver struck their suv and a second vehicle near levick street. this all happened in the southbound lanes just before 3:30 this afternoon. now, authorities say the injuries of the officers and the driver of the second vehicle are not life threatening. the accused drunk driver is under arrest. a flammable gas that leak for hours from a rail tanker is finally contained in a

south jersey community. the dangerous leak prompted evacuations and shutdown several local roads and part of a highway.
