live from the cbs broadcast center in philadelphia. this is cbs-3 "eyewitness news" this morning. we are waking to up rain throughout the holiday weekend, but we will see the sun at some point today, at least that's what they say. so you don't necessarily have to cancel all of our outdoor plans. today is monday, may 29, good morning, i'm rahel solomon. jim donovan is off this morning. so, matt peterson here filling in, helping out, so meisha. good morning. >> good morning, always good to be with you, especially on a holiday, i will say, matt, that rain, just going to have to deal with it, slap on the happy face and deal with it, it is your friday, hey. >> i know, and unfortunately it, will rain tomorrow. i can't even. >> we wouldn't allow it anyway, matt. >> so we will take it. >> see little sunshine, hopefully this afternoon, hopefully see little bit of

that yellow sunshine breaking through the clouds, unfortunately, not going to be real sun-filled day. outside right now, this is the boardwalk down at rehoboth. huge difference from even the last couple of mornings where maybe little cool. but we haven't had the damp and dreary weather, in the morning, but again, this is what's going on, few people had been braving the element, early this morning, people just kinds of running and doing their thing on the board walk this morning, again, going to see the shower continue for at least the next couple of hours or so. then they will get pretty spotty, especially in the second haft of the morning, through the afternoon, and in the afternoon that's when we are watching for probably a little bit of the sunshine to break on through. temperatures out there right now, relatively mild. so even though it is dreary, it is not cold. sixty in wilmington and millville, even 61 dover. fifty-nine here in center city, 58, reading, allentown, little bit on the cool and rainy side though head further north mount pocono only at 50 degrees, could maybe not the greatest morning, look at the regional forecast for today, all the way to

8 degrees here in philly hopefully little sunshine, 78 down the shore, and 70 with the showers, up in the poconos, meisha, so i know you like the warm weather. i know we won't have the greatest day, but at least get your 80s. >> you nailed t if i could take that slice of pie, man, i'll take it. >> definitely, got to get what you can get. >> whenever we got the sun even just for little, i think everyone celebrates, so good morning, everyone, like matt pointed out, yes, wet roadways this morning. and because of it, not so much the slow downs we're concerned about, holiday, most people probably even sleeping at this point, but it is the hydroplane, if you are out there, so, heads up on this. we are starting to get some pooling on our shoulders, and the bridges, under the bridge decks, all of that sort of thing specially smaller side streets as well you'll have some pooling even in the middle of the roadway. right now 95 near the betsy ross, see where the water is pooling on the shoulder area. just flick on the pavement. you can see that kind of the

sheen from the light on road weed, ben franklin bridge, same thing, not congestion levels, not the story of the day, it is really the rain women g -- coming down, 202, at route 29, what you are looking at there. and just heads up, we do have downed tree, in the smaller area, perkioman ville road, so if this is your neighborhood, just heads up, the road right now partially block. more to come in the next ten minute, rahel, over to you. >> meisha, thank you. two men found stabbed inside an apartment complex in philadelphia's kensington section over night. one died at the scene, the other rushed to the hospital. "eyewitness news" reporter trang do live at temple university hospital where the victim social security treated. good morning, what can you tell us? >> well, good morning, are h police tell us surviving victim, 57 year old man, in critical condition here at temple hospital. fighting for his life. police found him with multiple stab wounds, to his chest, as well as his head. he also found second man with multiple stab wounds, who did not survive. but take a look at video of the scene, last night, around

9:15, police responded to apartment complex, on the 3400 block of frankford avenue. now, that's in the city's harrow gate section in kensington, now, this is directly across the feet from john webster elementary school. in an apartment, officers found a man who was around the age of 40, with stab wounds all over his body. paramedics pronounced him dead on the scene. officers also found 57 year old man in that same apartment, with several stab wounds to his head, and his chest, paramedics returned him to temple hospital where doctors are working to save his life. now, at this point, it is unclear how these two men in this apartment are linked, list rye now have not made any arrests, to now live from tell be hospital, trang do, cbs-3, "eyewitness news," rahel, back to you. >> a lot more work for investigators, trang, thank you. >> now, over to delaware, new castle county police trying to figure out what spark gunfire that sent a 14 year old girl, 38 year old man to the hospital. the two shooting victims fawn on the 700 block of north van

buyer he street, both expected to make full recovery. at this time no arrests. >> and 19 year old man recovering this morning, after police say he was shot seven times in west philadelphia. police found him yesterday evening along belmont mansion drive fairmount park. he is in stable condition, no word on any arrests. here. and investigators are trying to pinpoint what sparked a house fire in a killed three people in north philadelphia. nine year old prudence, seven year old dean, and their 54 year old grandmother, monique, died sunday morning, roughly 100 firefighters answered the call when flames swept through this home six street at montgomery avenue. adam teal urging everyone to be vigilant about fire safety. >> our folks are making rescues, protecting property 24/7. it is the same time, we just cannot do this alone. i mean, we got to have help. really, really are imploring everybody to, you know, take charge of your own fire safety. >> the child's parents jump topped safety, the red cross

now helping them. >> and police also trying to figure out what caused a dirt bike and car to crash last night at philadelphia's juniata park neighborhood. this happened at the intersection of whitaker and wyoming after just before 7:00. thirty-three year old man taken to the hospital. it is still however not clear this morning if he was the driver of the dirt bike or the driver of the car. he is however list in the stable condition. >> and tragedy during fleet week. elite navy sky diver killed during demonstration over the hudson river. this happened yesterday afternoon in jersey city near liberty state park. officials say elite team of four parachute jumpers caught the leap frogs, performing a demonstration when the parachute for one of the sky divers failed to open. he landed in the water and was rushed to the hospital. but died short time later. >> and i ask for all of your prayers at the navy seal community, who lost a true patriots today. >> something everyone was enjoying, then changed real quick. >> just to hear somebody died like that and seeing it

>> a warning now about tiny caterpillars. may look harmless, but these are being blamed for a rise in rashes. caused from the tiny hairs on the did a caterpillars that contain histamines. already seen number every cases and they want people to be aware. >> the last two weeks, the caterpillars started to get large ertz, starting to see people get intensive i rashes it, starts with a itch, gets red, swells up, then takes several days to get better. and that typically is the worse reaction. >> doctors say the problem will be around for the next few weeks, as the little inch

six continue to hatch. >> and take a look at this, incredible cell phone video from family trapped in a flashflood in branson, missouri over the weekends. severe storms tore through the area being ripping down trees, knocking out power, even flooding roads, all over missouri and tennessee. the family not hurt, they did eventually all make it out of their car. we send over to matt peterson. we dealt with quite a bit of rain. saturday beautiful, but have been dealing with quite a bit of rain. is it part of the same system? >> a bit it is. actually i just want to say i actually is a friends that i worked with at one of my very first tv station who is is from branson, talking to him on facebook couple of days ago, and he said his family is almost completely un water. so he was hoping that folks out there would send their prayers to those folks in branson, dealing with quite a bit of water. really even though they didn't have necessarily the tornados, wasn't the typical severe weather you expect, branson still dealing with a lot of issues. we are seeing the system that gave all of the bad weather to

the nation's mid section, now tracking eastward. and we are now seeing the remnants of that, at least, in a certain degree. so we do see some showers that are going to be out here through the morning, by about lunchtime or so, at the latest, i think, actually really going to start to see the shower activity taper off. that's good news for us, because the afternoon, if you do have plans, we could see maybe few rays of sunshine actually. looks like for the most part we should be relatively dray say for few light scattered rain showers here or there. so just keep an eye to the sky. if you have afternoon plans. but right now i would not suggest cancelling those afternoon or evening plans. by the time you get to 5:00 maybe even better chance for few rays of sun. through the nighttime hours, dry, multi cloudy to cloudy for the overnight, tuesday though another weak boundary comes on through, as it does it, bridges showers, maybe even isolated rumble every thunder for our tuesday, so going back to work on what could be a little bit of wet day too. best chance of rain is this morning, afternoon some sun, spotty shower, then again tomorrow, another chance for shower or thunderstorm again

the good news, though, for the most part, not looking at any heaven rain. for today 80 degrees for afternoon high temperature, shower will be out there on our memorial day, hopefully, hopefully shall meisha, see couple of the rays of sunshine, makes it better even if we start the day little damp. >> absolutely, that's what we're hoping for, matt, we will hold you to it, looking for that sun. good morning, happy memorial day to you. looking outside, so this is the first accident of the morning, we don't anticipate having too many of them just because we don't have the congestion levels, that typically would warrant such a thing. but this is one that first one of the morning, 95 south, path route 320, not going to slow you down, might tap your brakes, but won't be whole lot of vehicles in front or behind you. just a heads up though, pulled off to the shoulder now, blocking the far left lane with the service person. hopefully it get cleared out of your way, delaware county looking nice and quiet. fifty-nine north, 452, take that all the way up to the airport, this is what we are looking at right now. you can see, both moving in

the southbound, northbound direction looking okay, everyone traveling at posted speeds, by the way if you are traveling by flight today, we haven't heard of any concellations or delays at the airport, but of course if we hear of anything we'll let you know. birdseye view of the vine and 95, of course nice open roadways, take it easy because it is so wet out there. rahel, back to you. >> meisha, thank you. fbi may press charges against the suspect in the fatal stabbing of two men in portland oregon. jeremy christian dealt anti-muslim slurs to a girl and her friends on a train and stabbed a person to help him. now one of the girls sending her thanks to those who came to her defense. >> they lost hear lives -- they lost their lives because of me and my friend because of the way we look. and i just want to say thank you to them and their families, and i appreciate them. because without them, we probably would be dead right now. >> christian is due in court tomorrow.

a boy in california was lucky to walk away with few scratches after a terrifying water parkins dent, park officials say that when the boy hit the landing area, at the bottom after slide, he got on top of the water and slid right over the edge. that slide, as well as another one just like it, now closed as investigators try to figure out what happened. thrill seekers waited on -- in on the decision. >> i was really disappointed we couldn't go on, but they had couple of other slides open. >> little disappoint. >> and that incident happened, the same exact day the $42 million water park had opened for the first time. >> well, back here at barbeque season officially underway, so in this week's angie's list report, take a look at advice for keeping your deck in good shape. >> most wood decks made of pressure treated pine or red cedar. every season check for weak spots, signs every wood rot, instability in posts or framework.

and don't let the surface suffer either. >> you should re seal your deck every two to three years with either clear or semi transparent stain, easiest way to find out whether it is time to tackle your deck drop water on it, if it beads up nicely you can wait little longer. if it soaks in, it is time to re stain. >> this can be a do it yourself project. but you can do more harm than good if you're not careful. power washing is fine, but don't use too much pressure or spray too close to the wood. you want to keep the tip of your power washer at least 6 inches away from the wood at all times. you want to keep it at pretty much constant elevation and always keep in motion. if you stop or dwell on an area likely to leave a mark on the wood that will be very difficult to remove. >> after you power wash let the deck dry out, then apply the stain, sealer, penetrating oil base stain is usually better than water base product that just coat the surface. >> with proper care a deck can

last 20 years or more, but you should inspect quite often. if you find any problems, fix it right away, so you're not putting you or your loved once at risk. >> not your typical vending machine, butcher shop in wisconsin, invented it meat vending machine, yes, right in front of his store. now people can buy their favorite meats, even when the shop isn't open. you can grab bacon, brats, plenty of other cuts from this machine. the owner said simply another way for him to serve his customers when he's not there. >> i look at it, another way for me to serve the customers, when i can't be here for them. >> i think that's pretty cool. i think that's probably going to get some use. >> at least one customer very excited there. the vending machine prices are the same as they are in the store, and for those cold wisconsin winters told the machine even has a heater. >> well, this is definitely not my kind of vending machine, i can tell you right now, not one that i would be

this is cbs-3 "eyewitness news" this morning. >> good morning, i'm rahel solomon. jim has the day off. it is 30:00, here's what you need to know in your morning minute. a man is dead and another in the hospital. that's after a double stabbing in a kensington apartment. >> at this point it is unclear how these two men are linked. and at this time police have not made any arrests or recovered the weapon used. tragedy during fleet week. elite navy sky diver dead after his parachute failed to open, and he landed in the water. >> and i ask for all of your prayers for the navy seal community. >> doesn't lock like we will see widespread shower and thunderstorm chances, but again, they're going to be out there through most of the morning, few spotty showers even this afternoon.

or so, at least the chances for them will continue for the next couple of hours. going into the afternoon, peaks of sunshine for us, that's good news, then get drier as we go through the overnight tonight i really think any afternoon plans that you have, keep an eye to the sky, because spotty shower not ruled out. but it should be drying up that you should not have to cancel any outdoor plans. temperatures across the area starting out little on the cooler side out toward the poconos, ooh degrees, 59 here in center city. down toward the shore points coming in at 60 atlantic sit, again it is a little bit on the damp, dreary side, storm scan3, showing the scattered showers, better chance for the rain here so far during the day has been in the northern parts of the viewing area, up toward the pocono few showers of atlantic city, and couple of spotty ones sprinkled inbetween. temperatures through the rest day, 66 degrees by 10:00 this morning, we go up to high of zero eight this afternoon, so it is a warm day, all it be little bit on the dreary side, rahel, and then looking at some temperatures that could even get up more in the 80s, 70s, the rest of the week,

couple of maybe spotty showers, but overall, looks like it will be nice short work week for a lot of foams. >> all right, matt, that sounds good to me. >> memorial day, what we've been talking about if you are just waking up, wet roadways, base any anywhere, actually first accident, of the morning, 320, but again, not so much going to be talking about the incident on the roadways or the congestion levels, mainly going to be the story, the wet roadways, how you have the potential of hydroplane, a loft you coming back into town from being down the shore, for example, or where ever you may be little later on. schuylkill, past conshohocken curve toward the blue route, looking here, beautiful shot. wet roadways, you can see, some of the pooling pulled out to the shoulder, birdseye view, looking good, quiet for those every you that just happened to get out and travel this morning, you will be enjoying the nice open roadways, take it easy, because when we are right outside when we can sometimes get the primary congestion.

though? >> it will clear out. >> yes? >> it will be nice. >> yes, looks like it will be a little later on. how has it been so far for opening weekend? >> we have weather -- overall it has been great. then right around 5:00 when we start dinner, a little sprinkle. which hurt a little. but i'm not complaining. it has been a great weekend. >> good, good, good. so obviously the weather could be little better. people still are coming out. how long have you guys been here for? >> it all started when my father, over there, renting bicycles as a kid, he got kicked out of there, bought this lot here to rent his bikes, the city made him go to building, and then in 1908 they brought the boardwalk from 300 yards out, right into us, and that's when it all began. >> so you've been here since 68, working on about 50 years now, got to be kind of cool to be a part of the community. >> yes indeed. everyone knows us.

we're all friends. and the best part is the people come down every year, know our names, say hello, say good-bye, stop in, always say we got to get at least one stop in at oves whether it be dinner, breakfast, lunch, whatever. and it is great to see them every year. >> i feel like when you open this thing up people know, they smell the donut getting ready and coming out. >> absolutely. you can smell the donuts, and you can't get away from that smell. and then at night you can smell the seafood cooking. and it is like a magnet. it is great. >> i love it. tom, thank you, my friend. so we do have donuts this morning, and that means i got to get involved. what's up, man. >> what's going on, early morning. >> so how many of these are you pumping out a day? >> a lot. >> yes? >> too many. >> too many? >> too many to count, yes. >> got to be cool. you just have your regulars come through here, everyone popping by, trying to get fresh donuts? >> oh, yes, every morning we see the same faces. >> is that right? >> yes, yes. >> how has it been so far this weekend? >> been pretty good. the mornings have been pretty clear except for today.
