live from the cbs broadcast center in philadelphia. this is cbs-3 "eyewitness news." memorial day 2017. the nation is remembering fallen members of the military with ceremonies throughout the country. people pay their respects this morning at the korean war veterans memorial in washington dc1 of so many somber tributes today. >> ♪ >> and towns throughout our

region are striking up the band, the tributes go on this noon, with parades, and salutes to our troops as we head into the unofficial start of summer. >> and a rough surf at the beach in ocean city, that unofficial start of summer down the shore sending on rainy note. but apparently hasn't kept people from enjoying the board walk. good afternoon, i'm rahel solomon. jim donovan has the day off w so many events on this memorial day, we are hoping for break from the rain, that would be nice, matt peterson live on the skydeck, matt, a lot of people have afternoon barbeques, what do you think, might get break from the rain? >> i think we will get a break from the rain, been damp, dreary morning pretty much across the entirety of the delaware valley whether here in philly or even go up north to the poconos, down the shore, been dreary start to the day, as well, little light mist, still falling out there, storm scan3, not showing a ton of precipitation, still light showers through gloucester, camden, burlington counties,

jersey at this point, first here in center city back off to the north it, looks like for the most part the heaviest rain has since moved off. few spotty showers though can't be ruled out through the rest of the afternoon, going to hope to maybe get a few breaks of sunshine becomes but overall does not look like it will be sun filled afternoon. but again, afternoon plans, right now, i don't think you need to cancel them. just keep eye to the sky. temperatures for the most part currently in the 60s, we do still have 52 degrees in mount pocono, but 61 in center city, 60 up in trenton looking at zero six in atlantic city with the northeast breeze coming off of the ocean. looking at the planner, still going to hopefully try to get up to the low 70s, breaks of sunshine through the cloud corn, later on, with maybe few spotty showers, overall looks like dries outgoing through the rest of our short work week with temperatures that are going to be back newspaper maybe the 80s by about wednesday or so. so we have light at the end of the tunnel rahel, we'll hopefully be seeing that again sooner rather than later. >> here's hoping, matt, thank

you. throughout the region people remembering the men and women who served our country in the armed forces like so many communities, media has an annual memorial day parade for crowds gathered to honor or country brave service members, joe holden live in media at the parade, good afternoon, joe. >> reporter: good afternoon. very somber day here in media. fitting for the occasion as couple of hundred turned out to watch the parade go by, of course many remembering the sacrifices of those in our armed services, the parade stepped off at about 10:00 this morning. check it out. >> ♪ >> ♪ >> ♪ >> symbol crash to start thing off here, the snare drums along state street, couple of hundred participating in this annual delaware county tradition. featuring the pen crest high school marching band and color guard, numerous fire companies, veterans, from all military branches, area little league teams all joining in the festivities. parents watch along the parade

route. they tell me this is an important civic lesson for their children. >> i just think we have kids now, i think it is important to bring them out and see the community and people that have fought hard for our freedom and the great fun day. >> what it symbolizes, obviously, supporting our veterans, and, you know, just thanking them, you know, for coming out. >> now, check this out. this is world war two retired private first class joe grossano of aldan, give answer lift by police, he was part of the ceremonies, he told us his children would be worrying seeing him the 93 year old in a police car. that will was incredible story. cbs-3 cameras caught as media police give joe a lift to his car. he's 93, we'll have more on his story, who he is, and his service coming up starting on "eyewitness news" at 5:00. live in veterans square, in media, delaware county, joe

holden, cbs-3 "eyewitness news." >> joe, thank you. >> ♪ >> ♪ >> ♪ >> and the sounds of bagpipes helped kick off the philadelphia memorial day parade in port richmond this morning, several low groups from viet nam veterans to boyscouts are walking in today's celebration. it got started at richmond and allegheny, all of the parade floats, funded by donations from local neighbors. group of high school student started their memorial day by honoring fallen viet nam veterans, placed flags at the viet nam memorial spruce streets and columbus boulevard. each flag represents a veteran. student are from girard music high school and lasalle college hi, this is the second straight year both schools have taken part in the ceremony. >> president trump commemorated the memorial day holiday by laying wreath at the tomb of th tomb of the unknn

police have one suspect in custody after two men stabbed overnight in philadelphia's kensington section. officers called to apartments on the 3400 block of frankford avenue, at around 9:15 last night. inside they found a 40 year old man with stab wounds all over his body. he died at the scene, 57 year old victim who was stabbed in the chest and head is currently in the hospital in critical condition. un official start of summer but warm temperatures from this past winter has health officials concerned about zika. don champion has the latest on the zika threat. >> the temperatures are rising, and so are worries about the zika cyrus. in dallas, health officials are warning everyone to be vigilant. >> we don't want resident to be relaxed about the mosquito season. >> texas, florida, two of the highest risk states where officials say we could see outbreaks of the mosquito born virus this summer, the golf states, tuscon arizona, areas of southern california, are also on the list. been one of the warmest

winters on record so what it means is the number of mosquitos that transmit seek a, out in high numbers. >> the biggest concern is for pregnant women, experts are urging them to take precautions, like using insect repellent, limiting time outdoors, to avoid mosquito by the. a recent study shows local transmission of zika began in florida, month before it was pick up, doctor peter says health departments will need to detect cases sooner. >> actively looking for zika virus, among people with fever and a rash who go to community health centers on emergency rooms, clinics, actively testing them for zika. >> the city of dallas already looking into stepping up efforts to detect zika in resident. >> we are talking about expanding our surveillance with doctors offices having

>> matt peterson, little left of the holiday weekend. any chance we might try out? >> you know, we're already starting to, it was a little bit dreary this morning, we had all of the cloud cover out there, but, the good news, it looks like for the most part just light mist, right now. >> okay. >> so most of the heaviest rain has been east, that's good news for us, now, light spotty shower not completely ruled out for the afternoon hours, but again, those chances relatively low, especially, compared to what we had this morning, and we could hopefully maybe even see peak or two of sunshine as we get through the later afternoon maybe toward the evening hours, so we hold out hope for again maybe few rays of sun, and then it will be dry, especially as we go through the overnight hours tonight, temperatures will be pretty mild. but, the cloud cover does stick around. we probably won't see sunshine until the middle of this coming work week. taking a look outside, a much different scene on the beach in rehoboth here on the memorial day compared to what we had over the weekends, beach was packed by about lunchtime or so, again the last kim of days, but the

cloud cover and the dreary wet wet area lot of people kinds of hitting the road early after we had the long weekend, trying to get jump getting back to maybe the steady, again, still few folks out there holding out for the last couple of days, so much different scene here this afternoon, compared to recently, storm scan3 showing you most of the precipitation now moving out, just some cloud cover for us, across the center city area and specially down to the south and east. clouds are trying to thin out as you head back toward the poconos. but in general, it does still look like dealing with generally overcast skies, maybe few lingering showers, and also back toward burlington county and just into southern gloucester county too, maybe few light showers moving through overall. though, again, that's what we will be seeing precipitation wise through the rest of our memorial qual day, doesn't look like you will need to cancel your afternoon plans, if you do have them, keep your eye to the sky. and if we do see that spotty shower or maybe move things inside for about a half hour or so, then that's all it will

last. probably move those plans back outside if you do see spotty showers. future weather shows again few of the light spotty showers, but couple of maybe breaks in the cloud cover for us, go through the afternoon cloud cover thickens back up, watching on tuesday, for some showers, maybe isolated rumble every thunder, another weak boundery comes on through, then finally by the time we get into wednesday things will clear out, should be pretty nice, rain for tomorrow, philly area, still some showers, light arms, shore point, again, maybe shower, isolated rumble every thunder maybe little moran the same goes for of the poconos, rumble every thunder maybe little bit more rain, then this city. we do have coastal flood advisory for all of the low-lying areas along the coastline, so do be prepared for that, goes into effect 10:00 tonight lasting until tomorrow morning, never try to drive through flooded roads. tonight, 72, isolated shower, hopefully little sunshine for us, going down to 60 degrees for the overnight low tonight. we're dry, and mild, getting a look at the eyewitness forecast here, 79, on tuesday,

again, spotty shower, maybe isolated rumble every thunder in the afternoon, as the front comes through. eighty-one on wednesday. we will be going back to the 70s on thursday, but some sunshine for us, 80s again friday, with again, still staying relatively nice out there. then rahel we are watching for our next chance for shower to be next saturday, but if we can get maybe three days in a row with some dry weather, i think we'll take it. >> again, the next, next chance of storms, again? >> again. >> again. next saturday. >> we haven't had enough? >> no. >> okay, matt, thank you. well today we are meeting a man who row fuse today let go of his dreams. meisha here with love it. meisha? >> memorial day, oh, yes, incredibly special and powerful holiday filled with stories from the old, the present and the ones that haven't even been told yet. day to honor you are indeed yesterday bridge brave selfless and strong men and women in uniform from the us armed forces. i would be remiss not to choose and write a love it story on one of our heroes.

let's meet a man proving it is never too late to accomplish the hard. it is true, no matter how big or small a goal might be never too late. milton mock errman wanted to serve our country so badly in 1944 he changed his birth certificate, enlisted in the u.s. navy fighting in worlds war two, in doing so, how much, he sacrificed much among the things he missed the celebration that was important to him. his high school graduation. upon returning home from war, the soldier's commotion about missing graduation prompted the school to hold a special ceremony. but, before it could happen the school burned down to the grounds taking all of the school records with it. time moved forward, as it always does, and milton moved away taking a job working for the railroad and started a family. but, as all strong seeds planted deep within the heart more than zero seven years later, something was still missing. and milton new what it was. he wanted that graduation. the principal spoke with had actually lost both grand parents in worlds war two, and was excited to make it happen.

and so they did. milton received the diploma he so badly wanted and so much deserved. his entire family made the john fry all different states to watch him graduate. after taking diploma in his hands he said i don't know how to put it into words but after all this time it means everything to me. and i can see why. it is crazy, that is just one example of thousands upon thousands, and this one kind of stands youth, because it is something that some would maybe say well, this may and graduation, but for some, it is huge, carry it around for 07 degrees. >> absolutely. >> you guys have any family or friends? >> absolutely. and what a great accomplishment. >> certainly. it doesn't matter, if it is ten, 20, 30, or 70 years later. it is never too late to accomplish your dreams. happy memorial day,
